Metallica to Perform With Jason Newsted at Rock Hall Induction, Thanks to Blondie

Metallica will reunite with former bassist Jason Newsted when the heavy metal gods are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Cleveland on April 4th, the Pulse of the Radio reports (via Blabbermouth.) Considering the group didn’t even include Newsted’s likeness in their Guitar Hero: Metallica video game (more on that here), bringing back the bassist comes as a surprise. But according to Kirk Hammett, the decision to invite Newsted to join Metallica during the induction and performance can be credited to another Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee: Blondie.

“We went as a band when Black Sabbath was being inducted, and at that time Blondie was also being inducted that night,” Hammett said of the 2006 ceremony, when former Blondie members Frank Infante and Nigel Harrison practically begged Deborah Harry on television to let them perform with the rest of the band, to no avail. “And there was so many politics and so much drama that, you know, we collectively said to each other, ‘We don’t want any of that,’ because it kind of, it puts a really bad, sour note on the whole celebration itself.”

Therefore, “Jason Newsted will be there, and he will be playing with us at one point,” Hammett said, ensuring that Flea, who will induct the band, won’t have to deal with any unexpected awkwardness onstage like Shirley Manson did when she presented Blondie. Plus, with Newsted, Flea and current Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo all involved, we finally have sufficient bass to support Run-DMC’s performance. The Rock Hall ceremony will air on Fuse on April 4th. Until then, check out Rolling Stone’s full coverage of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He was only with them for 14 years… it’s the least they could do.

harverster that borrows | 3/25/2009, 3:45 pm EST

well newsted should be honored…he put more time in then the rest of the bass players did….give credit where its due…as long as they dont play sandman, sad but true, one….but they will….its all bad for ya

Ruban | 3/25/2009, 3:48 pm EST

I bet Dave Mustaine has his fingers crossed now

Naldo | 3/25/2009, 3:51 pm EST

Very cool. Don’t let it turn into another Blondie/Van Halen fiasco with former members not showing up or creating a shitstorm.

The first and only time I saw Metallica was Newsted’s last tour back in 2000. He rules! Way better than Pigtails Trujillo (though Trujillo does seem like a cool guy).

Naldo | 3/25/2009, 3:52 pm EST

Mustaine won’t be there. Even though he’s got a few writing credits on Kill ‘Em All and Ride The Lightning, I do believe Hetfield said at some point that he wanted only the people who actually recorded with the band.

Poor Mustaine.

Bring Jason brought back | 3/25/2009, 3:55 pm EST

Just bring him back already please…..I don’t understand how he is not in the game…

tom in vegas | 3/25/2009, 3:59 pm EST

For sure, this is a joke. I am not a huge Metallica fan, butr I think they blong in the Hall, but to Not even invite Mustaine??? He would probobly turn them down, but the offer should be made, and publicly

BK | 3/25/2009, 4:18 pm EST

Newstead is better than Trujlio.

Ryan | 3/25/2009, 4:23 pm EST

Mustaine was invited, he declined because of his touring obligations in Europe. Just look it up, he also congratulated Lars and James saying he was proud of them.

surforia | 3/25/2009, 4:26 pm EST

Cool… nice that Metallica and JN swallowed their collective pride… let’s hope Axl and Slash do the same in 2012…

Sandy | 3/25/2009, 4:31 pm EST

Tom in Vegas: They did invite Mustaine. He declined, saying that he would wrapping up the European tour.

infectaphibian | 3/25/2009, 4:58 pm EST

anyone who thinks that Jason Newsted is a better bass player than Trujillo just needs to listen to some later Suicidal Tend. and some Infectious Grooves. There is no doubt Trujillo kicks major ass at anything he does.

infectaphibian | 3/25/2009, 5:02 pm EST

also, listen to Newsted on Gov’t Mule’s Deepest End performance, not bad but not outstanding

dude | 3/25/2009, 5:30 pm EST

i think a cool idea would be to have jason and robert play anesthesia (pulling teeth) for a tribute to cliff burton. maby have jason play the first half then rob play the other, or vice versa. they have to do something in respect for cliff. if it wasnt for his loss they wouldve never been in metallica.

Anonymous | 3/25/2009, 6:32 pm EST

I`m not a huge fan but I have to say these guys are cool. I saw the Blondie ackwardness and was apalled by the pettiness. Good for you guys. I think that they are still grounded….nice.

grasssss | 3/25/2009, 9:09 pm EST

wooo! finally they got in. im a HUGE metallica fan and it’s awesome they are having jason come back for it!!! wooo!!

Jason at 15 | 3/25/2009, 9:18 pm EST

my friend Tim Hamlin, rest his soul, discovered Jason Newsted when JN was only 15. He brought him out to Phoenix and the rest as we say, IS HISTORY!
Jason you LUCKY BASTARD.. now go back to COOL SKOOL and find your lost NADS!

t | 3/25/2009, 9:38 pm EST

Good job Metallica… that will NEVER happen when GNR get inducted.
Family is family in the end.

Pete | 3/25/2009, 10:10 pm EST

Good for him, he deserves it. Good for the other guys for including him.
Life’s too short for the ‘ol drama crapolla.

Bob Rock | 3/25/2009, 10:11 pm EST

We all know who the best bass player for Metallica was now dont we

toby | 3/25/2009, 10:35 pm EST

It’s always good to take the high road!

get over it | 3/26/2009, 12:22 am EST

Trujillo is a MUCH better bass player although Newsted did some singing. As far as bass playing goes, Trujillo wins hands down

The D | 3/26/2009, 10:34 am EST

Trujillo was good with Suicidal and Infectious Grooves, but he just doesn’t “fit” with Matallica. Newstead was/is a much better player. And I hope and pray GnR NEVER gets in, Axl doesn’t deserve the honor, pompous ass that he is.

Anonymous | 3/26/2009, 11:00 am EST

the only interesting thing about this story is the prospect of three bassists playing behind RUN DMC.

Garrett | 3/26/2009, 11:16 am EST

Newstead is a cool cat, but anyone that claims he is a better bass player than Trujillo is completely ignorant. Listen to Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves or his work with Ozzy (Trujillo excels). His bass solos on the St. Anger tour (”Junglessence”) blew the bass solos Newstead performed out of the water. The fact that he plays bass the proper way (with his fingers), while Newstead plucks away with oversized picks is further evidence.

MB | 3/26/2009, 12:02 pm EST

Metallica is great and deserve to be in the HOF! Other bands wish they can have the brotherhood that Metallica possess not naming any bands specifically GnR oops

Atlanticcanuck | 3/26/2009, 12:26 pm EST

Give Metallica props for taking the high road. I wish Van Halen would have done the same thing. Sammy and Mike were the othly ones that showed and neither is in the band now. As for Guitar Hero: Metallica, they just can’t stick the characters in there. they have to be suited up and scanned. For that reason I would suspect there will be no Cliff either. But it would be cool to have all the characters and even Dave Mustange as well.

basic | 3/26/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Cliff was a great bass player, but I tend to lean towards Rob as “technically” a better man on the instrument. I also agree that Rob doesn’t really “fit” with Metalica, and what Jason did on vocals can not be called “singing”, more like a barking dog.

Mykl | 3/26/2009, 4:28 pm EST

I wouldn’t be surprised if this winds up with Jason back in the fold eventually or this blows up in all their faces and they wind up all fighting backstage.

Sid | 3/26/2009, 4:33 pm EST

gee I wonder what song he’ll be playing *cough* Creeping Death *cough*

flank | 3/26/2009, 5:55 pm EST

Hetfield ought to hand Newsted one of those million dollar checks he gave Trujillo.
It was Newsted not Trujillo who played on the Black album.

weegie | 3/27/2009, 12:42 am EST

There’s no reason to have any silly metal bands in the Hall. Metal is rock and rolls ugly stepsister, the one with the little moustache. Hetfield is arguably the worst singer in the history of rock and roll, there’s been worse voices but he’s the most out of tune, flat, and least commanding singer ever. Lyrically the band is laughable. All we have left is silly metal power chords and fast drumming. The only metal band worth any kind of consideration for The Hall is Motorhead. Black Sabath worse one of the worst bands of all time. Metal is for the Rock and Roll IQ challenged ;)

Huh? | 3/27/2009, 10:06 am EST

“Lyrically the band is laughable”

Well by those standards you’d have to kick Zeppelin out of the hall too, right?

SATAN | 3/27/2009, 10:24 am EST

How can you compare Metallica to Zeppelin. That’s like comparing feces to brownies. Metallica sucks, talk about a 3 chord band. They have simple songs with bad lyrics and a solo thrown in. The only reason they have fans is because non country music red necks and mechanics need music too.

cltmetal | 3/27/2009, 10:35 am EST

weegie – before even arguing that metal bands don’t belong in the RnR Hall, you need to dismiss artists (and I used that loosely) like Madonna from the hall. In no way shape or form is Madonna rock n roll… Metallica is a pioneer and deserves every bit of their induction. How many rock bands today site them as an influence? I’d say just about everyone of them.

Jesus | 3/27/2009, 10:47 am EST

3 chord band??!?! Go listen Master of Puppets or And Justice…and then try to say that with a straight face…you uninformed piece of shit.

sirloin | 3/27/2009, 11:34 am EST

Led Zeppelin is not metal. Metal is when you have 2 or 3 players banging on the same note at the same time. Like Metallica. That is ‘classic’ metal. They should have their own little Metal Hall of Fame where they can honor themselves without embarassing rock n roll.

SATAN | 3/27/2009, 12:13 pm EST

wow Jesus, nice language. By the way, sorry to hurt your feelings, but Metallica’s music is horrible, the only good albums they have are the ones metallica fans don’t like. Master of puppets is just a bunch of fast played powerchords with solo’s thrown in. Any body can play metallica songs, just D tune your guitar and start messing around

Dave Mustaine | 3/27/2009, 1:09 pm EST

This is the worst band that ever got overhyped that I have ever seen. Guess they let everyone in the RRHOF these days. Pathetic. Others who deserved this honor and are already in should give up their spot in the hall and realize it is now an overhyped commercial joke! Megadeth rules!

SATAN is correct | 3/27/2009, 1:14 pm EST

in the assessment of the band. The truth hurts. Their music is filled with power chords with a few solos thrown in and elementary lyrics.

kenzie | 3/27/2009, 1:50 pm EST

And not before time, metallica is one of my all time favourite bands.Newstead should be there of course for all of those years service. To all of the people saying on this comments page that metallica are laughable and generally bad i would say get a life, there is obviously a reason why they are massive and have not gone away. quick shout out, JESUS knows what he is saying but SATAN “they only play 3 chords” blah blah, dont talk shit man. Stick to led zeppelin and shut it!!

kenzie | 3/27/2009, 1:52 pm EST

christ how did i fuck up newsted’s name, hahahahaha. excuse my dyslexic madness

sandy becker | 3/27/2009, 2:13 pm EST

that’s like saying moe’s better than larry; who cares? they’re both arm-in-cast bassplayers, & NEITHER come to mind when thinking of great bassists. and 3 chords, 5 chords, 10 chords, they’re all the same if they’re root-5th-root 3-note power chords (octaves don’t count!), & never get more intricate than the occasional major of minor chord in their simplest configurations. & hetfield always sounds like he’s tryin’ to squeeze out a big one…

Frodeguns | 3/27/2009, 2:45 pm EST

I read a post here that said GNR should not be inducted to RORHOF, wtf!?!?
Is there any band in the world that should be inducted its GNR!

btw Metallica deserve the induction too, and i think its great that newsted is invited, I wish that will happend with GNR…

Francisco | 3/27/2009, 3:05 pm EST

Oh yes. You are right. Metallica is just basic power chords, right? is easy as hell to write a song like “Orion”. Or “Creeping death”. Those are by the number songs. I know that you guys can outdo them any day of the week. I´m sitting right here waiting to hear your music.
Idiots.

Dude Man | 3/27/2009, 3:06 pm EST

Okay, lets get this straight. First, Metallica are one of the greatest hard rock and heavy metal bands ever. Second, I find it offensive to put down us fans of this music. Everyone has different tastes in music. Third, Metallica have had such a huge influence on today’s rock bands that they belong in. Fourth, Cliff was most likely the best bassist in the band because of his ability to experiment( listen to (Anesthesia)Pulling Teeth.) Fourth, for anyone who is too single minded about rock music( much like the hall itself who would rather induct bubblegum pop and rap artists than real rock subgenres) shame on you for not realizing the mark these bands have had on rock n roll. Finally, I know this might seem controversial, but I believe Led Zepplin were a heavy metal. A metal band that could also play blues and acoustic music. I thank any of you who actually read this whole past and feel free to comment on it.

anthony | 3/27/2009, 9:29 pm EST

whoever thinks metallica is just the same chords and such. why not learn music and look at the guitar part for creeping death. and how hard it is to play….and then sing at the same time.and james does it night in and night out

June | 3/27/2009, 11:46 pm EST

Newsted deserves it…He’s one of the all-time underrated members of a big band.
I love jason , I still miss him.

sirallanv | 3/28/2009, 1:52 am EST

Dude Man: I agree with you. Thank you for sparing me writing all that myself. And I did read the whole thing! :)

sirallanv | 3/28/2009, 1:55 am EST

Also: SATAN: I can think of about two metallica songs that are D-tuned. Please grow a brain before you speak again.

Dude Man | 3/28/2009, 8:30 pm EST

Thanks sirallanv!

varun | 6/3/2009, 5:12 am EST
