Chickenfoot Supergroup of Van Halen, Chili Peppers Members, Satriani Ready Debut

3/25/09, 2:49 pm EST

As the Smoking Section previously reported, former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and guitar virtuoso/filer of Coldplay lawsuits Joe Satriani have banded together to form the supergroup Chickenfoot. According to Blabbermouth, the band’s self-titled debut album will be released via Best Buy on Sunday, June 7th (a press release confirms a June release, but doesn’t name a specific date or mention any Best Buy deal). The quartet made its live debut at a private performance in Anaheim on March 18th.

Hagar recently told Rolling Stone each member’s rock roots play a role in the band’s music. “Kind of like who we are. Like kind of Zeppelin, Van Halen you know hard rock-y, Rush-y, kind of progressive a little bit. Hard rock. Hard sophisticated rock,” Hagar said, adding that “Joe Satriani, he’s the doctor man. He is the professor, this guy he’s awesome.”

The album will reportedly include 11 tracks and some heat-sensitive artwork, meaning if you put your hand over the band’s square peace sign logo, the black space will fade and reveal pictures of the band. No one’s buying CDs anymore, you need to be inventive these days. Hagar told RS that the band got its name because before Satriani was hired on, “There was three of us, three toes. And we’re funky.” The trio often jammed in Hagar’s adopted home base of Cabo San Lucas, where the former Van Halen members would perform with Smith at Hagar’s Cabo Wabo venue.

When Hagar realized he didn’t like singing and playing guitar at the same time, he thought, “‘We need a great guitar player. Who’s the best guitar player out there?’ Joe Satriani. And Joe’s a buddy right here in San Francisco, so I called him and boom.” A pair of Chickenfoot tracks have made their way onto the Internet, so check out the band’s “Down the Drain” above.

Jeff | 3/25/2009, 5:33 pm EST

Best band name EVER!!!11!!!1

Jeff | 3/25/2009, 5:36 pm EST

Chickenfoot = dumb name for a band.

So they are already off to a poor start.

ticketbastard | 3/25/2009, 6:51 pm EST

Apparently, Satriani has lost all integrity.

Imp | 3/25/2009, 8:49 pm EST

Not if he still gets paid.

Leonardo | 3/25/2009, 9:20 pm EST

Insane…can’t hardly wait to check them out…

Joe | 3/25/2009, 9:28 pm EST

Who needs Eddie ,Satriani rocks and he would never fire a band member too replace him with a pimple face son.Eddie is a douche bag.

Alex VH | 3/25/2009, 10:07 pm EST

Wow who knew Will Ferrell could play the drums????

CR1ZZ | 3/25/2009, 10:52 pm EST

Sounds fucking awesome! Sammy Hager rules! But please change the name, please. I cannot say, with a straight face, that I’m going to see the legendary chickenfoot.
But great guitarist, great drummer, great bassist, GREAT singer = truely epic rock band.
But that fucking name . . .

ChickenDick | 3/25/2009, 11:21 pm EST

Sounds like a cruddy Sammy solo project. What a bunch of crap!

Toshiro | 3/26/2009, 1:39 am EST

It sounds like they have chemistry and their rhythm section is quite good for a rock band. With Satch at the guitar who knows how their live shows will be. Chad Smith and Michael Anthony can definitely hold down the rhythm live, probably will give Satch some room to bust out his crazy shredding. What surprises me is the restrain he seems to have when hes playing with the band which is quite nice. He complements the sound quite well, rather than overpowering it. Probably will have to check this out.

Marc d | 3/26/2009, 1:47 am EST

Who cares what the name is? Did you really think Pearl Jam was a cool name first time you heard it?
You’ve got 4 very talented guys there — the music stands on its own. Looking forward to hearing more.

CR1ZZ | 3/26/2009, 2:27 am EST

Pearl Jam was catchy in a way. Chickenfoot sounds like a combo.

JB | 3/26/2009, 5:01 am EST

I like the name, sounds like a 60’s classic rock band. Like Humble Pie etc.

lp auger | 3/26/2009, 7:35 am EST

come on gys!
If one “superstar” band can get it going it’s them.
FOrget Audioslave or VR, Chickenfoot will kick it!

Chuck | 3/26/2009, 8:19 am EST

This is going to be a great classic rock album, and I can’t WAIT to see them live. Love the original and silly name, and I’m telling you, these guys have been around a LONG time – they are going to deliver a GREAT concert and a FUN album! That’s what rock and roll is all about!!!!

runnin with mike | 3/26/2009, 9:16 am EST

why is it that everything michael anthony plays sounds like runnin with the devil, oh I know…because he sucks as a bass player–just shut up and sing some backups like a bitch.

TC | 3/26/2009, 10:10 am EST

That’s pretty harsh about Mike Anthony. He seems like the sanist, most down to earth guy compared to the other guys in Van Halen. Hope this project does well.

tony montana | 3/26/2009, 11:00 am EST

this song goes nowhere.
it just plods along with no memorable melodic hook then tries to pick up steam towards the end.
the only redeeming factor is satriani’s soloing.
stupid name and LAME SONG!

Jon | 3/26/2009, 11:11 am EST

yawn….

Michael Anthony should be playing with VH…

kliff | 3/26/2009, 11:35 am EST

I’ll buy this and NOT The Axl Project, Mentallica or The White Stipes.

What | 3/26/2009, 11:51 am EST

It’s not April Fools yet.

tony montana | 3/26/2009, 12:07 pm EST

SUPERGROUP?
More like superpoop!

Papa | 3/26/2009, 12:25 pm EST

VH(No VH3) has not released a new album in over 15 years. Kinda sad. VH has become a cover band with Diamond Dave.

getthedoggie | 3/26/2009, 12:52 pm EST

Really good musicians still can’t elevate average sounding songs. I hope they do well though , we are up to our eyeballs with ‘urban’ tracks. Sammy has been in the sun too long though – that name opens them up to obvious cheapshots like “Chicken-s**t “

Angela | 3/26/2009, 1:09 pm EST

Listened to it with an open mind and it rocks. The Foot of Chicken will kick haters in the ass!

JP | 3/26/2009, 2:18 pm EST

I like it. With this band, Tinted Windows, and Jack White’s new side project; I think this year will be a great year for rock collaborations.

Moe | 3/26/2009, 3:59 pm EST

Dude, that was boring. Maybe it would be better if the sound wasn’t so bad, but still pretty boring.

Uncle Molson | 3/27/2009, 6:12 am EST

Red Rocker | 3/27/2009, 1:38 pm EST

This is fairly bad.

Dino Martino | 3/27/2009, 1:48 pm EST

I agree with tony montana…except for Satriana being a redeeming factor…they should have kept this one in the garage.

sandy becker | 3/27/2009, 1:53 pm EST

integrity? satch’s writing at best reaches the level of usable saturday morning cartoon music; at it’s worst, half-baked, 3rd-rate fusion. and he’s been repeating the same limited catalog of soloing ideas since the early 90’s. & the rest of these guys are a joke. mind you, evh when he 1st hit was nothing more than a guitarist who’d figgered out how to play the same ol’ rock riffs faster; boring.

Ilehay | 3/27/2009, 2:01 pm EST

The rock!!!
Can’t wait for the album, don’t understand why so many people are posting bad reviews here…

ticketbastard | 3/27/2009, 2:47 pm EST

I will look forward to this about as much as I look forward to the next album by Def Karaoke Jam… NOT AT ALL!

this gives me a funny feeling inside!!!

Gettin' Old Sucks! | 3/27/2009, 4:14 pm EST

The problem with Satriani’s music is it ain’t got no soul. It’s just shred this, rip that, and never transcends the riff. But at least it keeps these guys out of the senior center.

PAPA KEN RIV. CA. | 3/27/2009, 4:49 pm EST

WHY DO I WASTE MY TIME? YA THINK I’D KNOW BETTER!

Jason | 3/27/2009, 6:07 pm EST

Pretty cool stuff. Can’t wait to hear a better recording. I love when Hagar gets his screams in. Cool logo… like a square peace sign, but it’s a chicken foot. Funny as hell.

who cares about a name? | 3/27/2009, 8:21 pm EST

The song is great and I can’t wait for the album.

radzax | 3/27/2009, 8:59 pm EST

It is sad that the bad reviews come from talentless people who are not even good musicians. In this world there are people with no talent and they are called critics, because that is the only thing they do well. Rock on, Chickenfoot.

ScottC | 3/27/2009, 10:31 pm EST

Wow. Some of you are harsh critics. It wasn’t that bad. Sure, the song was too long, kind of stumbled in the middle and Sammy’s singing sounded almost off key at the beginning. But, overall, it still sounded better than 80% of the crap hitting the airwaves today.

I’ll wait for the CD before I turn into rock-expert-negative-critic guy, thank you.

The WOLVERINE | 3/27/2009, 11:55 pm EST

I bet all these asshats that are trashing this project are American Idol fans pull your heads outta Simons “A” hole and Know Sammy Rocks what the Hell did VH do when he was Uh fired or was that a favor they did him Sammy was around waaay before VH was even a houshold name, Satriani is the man and the others Michael Anthony made VH sound like music bass and back up vocals, Hey Will Ferrel’s Twin bro aint so bad on the drums either, I was a Chili Pepper’s Fan Too So maybe stop visiting Grampas cough medicine and Simon’s Colon and “listen” it’s called Music it’s original and It’s not top 40 regurgitated crap, don’t take it too serious and have a good time. “CHICKENFOOT” will probably sell more music than VH is now fo sure sorry Alex and Eddie, coulda Shoulda woulda, hey Valerie is looking P.H.A.T. these days…oh sorry Eddie.

urs-werner | 3/28/2009, 6:19 am EST

Great see them come back – visit Switzerland too, Sammy, wouldn’t it be the first time ?

The Shivering Dog | 3/28/2009, 11:06 am EST

This was exactly what I expected.I like Sammy.Sure he’s an egotistic yahoo but so what. It comes with being a Rock Star. I liked Mike in VH,his background vocals gave a lot of halfass VH tunes a little life. His bass playing is simple stuff but hey ,sometimes thats all you need. Chad’s steady as a rock. And Joe is Joe. As a guitar player myself I can wish I could do half of what he does but if you ain’t got a good tune it don’t mean shit how good you are. There is potential here, but we’ll see.Sounds like a few more practices might be in order.
Everybody a critic…now you a critic too!

Julien | 3/28/2009, 6:21 pm EST

You can say whatever you want to say but Chickenfoot will play in Europe this summer !
Faith No More too…
RATM last year, everybody, but not Van Halen…!!!

Spydermage | 3/28/2009, 8:40 pm EST

Good to hear “real” music in an industry where everything sounds like it rolled of an assembly line. Nothing really seems original anymore and most musicians are forced to bow down to the record execs if they want to make it anymore. If they’re not marketable, they’re gone. Sammy, Mike, Chad and Joe have been around long enough to be able to do what they want. Some people may not like it, others, me included, do. Most of us would love the opportunity to do this for a living. I’ll pick this up in June for sure.

Right now, I would probably kill somebody…just to hear some fresh Music that really Rocks! Save that pussy-ass top 40 shit for all the cocksmokers!

Matt in CA | 3/30/2009, 1:11 am EST

Dave replaced Eddie with Steve Vai. Sammy replaces Eddie with Joe Satriani. When you’re the frontman of Van Halen and get the boot, to get even, go and put together a better band with a guitar god who’s better than Eddie. Fucking in your face, mean-ass Van Halen bros. I’ve heard Chickenfoot’s two cuts and can see already that these guys are gonna make everyone say, “Van Halen who?” It’s a sweet, sweet moment of Zen and a damn happy day for Rock n’ Roll. Tear it up, Chickenfoot!

Jungleland2 | 3/30/2009, 11:53 am EST

I want this to do well. These guys are legends and can play their asses off. It will come down to SONGS, if the songs are good this will be HUGE, if the songs suck it will be HSAS or ASIA

Pat | 3/30/2009, 1:57 pm EST

I hope this does well. I agree with the person who said Satriani’s music has no real soul. Great guitarist but to much flash. Whatever people think of Hagar, at least he puts new music out. VH over a decade without new tunes.

LarryW | 3/30/2009, 10:05 pm EST

Chickenfoot….the WORST band name since Hoobastank (or even Archers Of Loaf)

Kenny C from Tucson | 4/4/2009, 4:23 am EST

Seems to be that one shouldn’t criticize something that isn’t even released yet. All those criticizing, where is your millions from the CD’s you’ve sold. This is based on a group of guys jamming out and having fun. What is rock n’ roll supposed to be? Sammy is the awesome party rocker. Sam and Mikey have been hanging for a while. Pair them up with an equally awesome guitarist and a fun-loving skins pounder and you have the making of a great CD and fun rock tour. Critics need to chill and let some new music happen…get a grip! It is new music something we call all use in these screwed up times. hey people lighten up a little and enjoy the show…CHICKENFOOT!!!

thehammer | 4/6/2009, 12:19 pm EST

Van Halen deserves their place in rock history whether they ever make a decent album again or not. VH-I? F.U.C.K.? Classics! But in recent years it seems Eddie is more concerned with bullshit and grand standing than music. He treats band members like replaceable parts. How well did that work out for KISS, ED? Eddie booted Dave, and we got “Eat ‘Em and Smile”. Now he boots Sammy and Mike and we get Chickenfoot. Hey, the rockers are gonna rock VH or no VH. For the haters, go sit and spin. If you’ve got ears, you can hear Chickenfoot owns it. If you don’t like it cause it ain’t the melody-less hardcore thrash crap that passes for hard rock and metal now, go listen to your Pantera and leave the music to the rest of us. People trash talking Satriani? Who loves hard rock guitar and can’t admit he’s amazing, even if you don’t like his style. That is just ignorant……

NOIR | 4/16/2009, 7:04 am EST

It’s SUPERGODS!!!!!

mftmaine | 4/20/2009, 9:33 pm EST

Okay, what sucks about this… Sammy could have pulled a guitarist with some feeling and soul, who can play just about every style there is out there… Johnny Hiland worked with Sammy a few years ago and smoked it in Lake Tahoe. So why go with Joe? Because Johnny is like 300# and legally blind! That to me would have sold me on the project. Especially when he puts pick to strings. Oh well, I’ll still dig this, but it could have had so much more and instead Sammy went shallow and picked the easy route.

chris | 4/23/2009, 1:52 am EST

boring? nearly every hard rock/metal band today featues a vocalist with absolutely no vocal range, gutterally screaming his way through 5+ minutes of one long base dominated groove. absolutley no semblance of a lead guitar player. no discernable difference between notes much less songs. somebody comes along playing good old fashioned whoop-ass rock n roll, and because it’s not experimental, gutteral, hip-hop laced, establishment produced, or just plain shitty, some of you call it boring. got news for you: the old guys rock! they can actually play the instruments we here. it’s not played for them, sung for them, written for them, arranged for them, or programmed by a fucking computer geek who thinks he’s a musician, bitches! if you don’t like real music don’t f-it up for the rest of us who do! by the way, pantera, slipknot, zombie, pearl jam, manson, and every other 1-note band of base distortion and little else – go fuck yourselves. just because you are limited musically doesn’t mean you should polute the airwaves with your substandard noise then let your idiot fans badmouth gys like hagar, satriani, smith, and anthony. sounds like chickenfoot will rock them even if they don’t know it – and they probably won’t.

Norm | 4/29/2009, 5:16 pm EST

These guys rock, I’ve been a Hagar fan since the 70’s, Satriani from early years and caught most of the G-3 tours. Seen Sammy a few times with Van Halen there all great. Played the 3-tracks from the album sounds great. Got my tickets for the show in SF and I’m ready to rock!!

Bpklly | 5/11/2009, 5:16 pm EST

I’m sorry but “all down the drain” rocks about as much as Lionel Ritchie. If this is what we can expect from the red rocker, then my suspicions have been confirmed: Sammy hagar really
is the one who ruined Van Halen!

NomadWarriorSoul | 5/15/2009, 6:48 pm EST

Pfft, the people saying Satriani is soulless are obviously not musicians or part of the group of people who think techno has soul. On his restraint, part of why he’s a guitarists guitarist is because for all the crazy stuff he is able to do he chooses to use melody. That’s part of what sets him apart from just plain old shredders.

Mark H Bryant | 5/17/2009, 10:25 am EST

I saw Satriani when he played with Deep Purple after Blackmore left. He is an awesome guitar player whether solo or with a band! I am going to rush to Best Buy and get the Chickenfoot debut album!

Hey Sammy ~ Any chance you could ‘dumb-down’ the lyrics so maybe someone in pre-school could understand them?

Mikke | 5/18/2009, 11:55 am EST

“Ooh, Satriani has lost all his integrity because he’s made some music that might appeal to people who don’t worship his arpeggios and complex guitar dork crap! Don’t leave me Satch, please! I need to use your music to insult people who don’t like unlistenable music! Don’t rock! I beg of you!”

RoRo | 5/22/2009, 3:30 am EST

Van Halen is and always will be the Best….Eddie is one of the most brilliant guitarist / piano players / songwriters, of all time, no question about it…Sammy is awesome as well, loved his stuff before he joined VH…I heard one tune from sammys new group, it sounded hopefull…Will buy it and reserve judgement until I hear it all…

Levi | 6/1/2009, 2:24 pm EST

Honestly, the truth is that hard rock guitar and metal are such a losers genre that the audience often can’t admit what a beautiful and talented player Joe Satriani is.

My personal opinion of Joe Satriani is that his ballads and melodies are better than his abilities as a guitar player. For instance the ‘Super Colossal’ disc features two tunes called A Cool New Way and the Meaning of Love which are outstanding. The rest is fairly energetic, but quite forgettable guitar dross.

I don’t appreciate the fact that Sammy Hagar and the guys from Van Halen get so much attention from guitar-type publications when they are trying to sell guitar products. You’re supposed to buy into their rock star pose without ever really liking the overproduced commercial music they make.

guitargonaut | 6/6/2009, 8:25 am EST

Anyone that would start a third party comment with “Honestly, the truth is…” and then go on to ascribe a particular genre as one of losers stikes me as someone with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. What I enjoy most is their conflicting logic. Perhaps that long nose they’re looking down is affecting their ability to hear. It’s certainly affecting their view.

SatrianiMustPlay | 6/6/2009, 1:30 pm EST

I’m a huge Satriani fan and am glad to see my boy make to Conan’s Friday show. Perhaps this will be the beginning of Joe’s goal of world peace! I LOVE JOE SATRIANI.

DeafasHell | 6/6/2009, 9:12 pm EST

Chikenfoot. F**ked-up name but, look at and listen to the talent. Satriani can outplay Eddie “The Alky” Van Halen any day of the week. I’d put “Surfin’ With The Alien” guitar work up against ANYTHING E.V.H. ever put out.

bullet | 6/7/2009, 12:57 am EST

I’ve never seen any of them live except satiani.would go see them just to see him play again.

chaosh | 6/8/2009, 1:57 pm EST

I find soul in Satch’s music….its all relative..I honestly wondered if he would be able to hold back and fit with a band with a singer…but its turned out not bad at all!

THE COACH | 6/9/2009, 8:54 am EST

HOW CAN U JUDGE THE CD IN 2 DAYS GO F YOURSELF

Jim | 6/11/2009, 8:11 pm EST

Some supergroup.even with all the hype live concerts(soldout tour haha) tv apperances and big names involved they could only sold 49k . That`s so weak. No one cares about Sammy or Mike any more those guys are done. But i`m sure Sammy and Mike will continue talking about Van Halen in interviews to generate some interest in Chickenfoot. No Dave or Ed equals no interest.

Rob | 6/13/2009, 12:54 am EST

Great cd. Can’t wait to see them live in chicago. Try not to listen to the negative comments and give the album a listen. People need to get off the I hate Sammy bandwagon he’s no roth. This is a really good rock album and Sammy puts on an incredible live show and I think this will be the same.

Scott | 6/15/2009, 12:26 pm EST

Saw them live at the Fillmore and bought the download – enjoyed both the live performance and the turns immensely. Straight ahead, non-synthesized, non-over-engineered rock music. No its not the 80s anymore, but this is a style that has been missing from the scene for too long. And all four, especially Chad, have great stage presence.

Carl | 6/19/2009, 11:02 am EST

I just got the album and I would say that if you like Hager and like Satch, you’re probably not going to like this album. It sounds very average and doesn’t represent what these guys are capable of. While I wasn’t expecting (nore wanted) it to be Hager screaming over Satch burning through guitar picks, I heard nothing of what makes these guys special. It’s almost as if they were so concerned about being a cohesive band that they filtered out what makes them good inthe first place. Even Michael Anthony’s backround vocals sounds unspectacular. Although I’m no huge fan of the dirty blues sound that dominates the albums, it can still be inspiring and interesting. However, most of these songs are rather boring. Even when they do take it out of first gear, it’s only done where speeding is allowed in the highway. Please try again boys.

tazman 60 | 8/9/2009, 2:47 pm EST

what is up w/ all you crapola EVH fans puttin Chickenfoot down. At least Satch shaves his head cause he wants to unlike Douchebag Dave who is really bald. unlike eddie who pisses everyone off that he plays with because of his ego, Don’t worry, Satch doesn’t say shit-he just let’s the music do the talkin! who knows-Valerie has lost wait in case you idiots don’t knowmaybe she has eyes for Satch or Sammy anyway-Chickenfoot rules>

Dave | 10/30/2009, 3:39 pm EST

Why can’t you just appreciate the music for what it is…4 excellent musicians gettin’ together to play…although the backing vocals do leave a little to be desired
