
Twenty years ago a University of Southern California student hit pay-dirt with a G-rated hit that would help hip-hop crossover to pop radio, win a Grammy, endure for two decades, and get former Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer out of his seat at karaoke. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Young MC’s “Bust A Move,” modern dance-floor wreckers like Diplo, Aaron LaCrate and members of Le Tigre have completed bonus remixes for the rerelease of the rapper’s Stone Cold Rhymin’. Rolling Stone chatted with the still-active MC about keeping it clean in the era of Public Enemy and N.W.A., his post-”Move” career and how his hit still helps guys get laid. “My record wasn’t necessarily rebellious, but it was clever enough to grab in a decent segment of people that didn’t listen to rap music,” he says. “I get plays on pop stations. But there are no oldies rap stations. So you get these records that outsold ‘Bust A Move’ that can’t get any play.”
