Jimmy Chamberlin Explains Smashing Pumpkins Split, Says He Can’t “Cash The Check”

Days after Rock Daily reported that Jimmy Chamberlin was exiting the Smashing Pumpkins, the drummer took to his official blog to explain his side of the story. “By now you have heard the news of my departure from the Smashing Pumpkins. I will say, without going into any unnecessary details that this represents a positive move forward for me,” Chamberlin writes. “I can no longer commit all of my energy into something that I don’t fully possess. I won’t pretend I’m into something I’m not. I won’t do it to myself, you the fan, or my former partner. I can’t just, ‘Cash the check’ so to speak.”

The “cash the check” line is especially striking, considering the Smashing Pumpkins have really “sold out” as the kids say in recent years, popping up in plenty of commercials. There’s the Morgan Freeman-narrated Visa commercial featuring “Today,” the Hyundai ad featuring new track “F.O.L.” that aired during the Super Bowl, “That’s the Way (My Love Is)” in a Ford commercial, the Guitar Hero: World Tour exclusive track “G.L.O.W.” Add it all up and the Pumpkins have pretty much become the Yellow Pages. Plus, perhaps Chamberlin further soured on sticking with the band after Corgan testified in Washington, D.C. in favor of the fan-maligned Live Nation Ticketmaster merger.

As for Corgan going all Axl Rose and continuing on as the Smashing Pumpkins, Chamberlin — the Pumpkin who stuck with Billy the longest, even playing in Zwan — says, “My best goes out to Billy and I’m glad he has chosen to continue under the name. It is his right.” Chamberlin adds, “Music is my life. It is sacred. It deserves the highest commitment at every level and the Pumpkins are certainly no different. I’m sorry but it really IS that simple. There is no drama, bad blood, or anything else but a full commitment to music.” Chamberlin writes that he’ll continue to make music with his Jimmy Chamberlin Complex and other musical interests.

Wow…

That’s a blow to Billy’s credibility.

I just feel bad for him. Keep plugging away Billy.

Bill | 3/24/2009, 1:59 pm EST

I don’t feel bad for Billy Corgan at all. He’s dug his own grave. I’ve been a Pumpkins fan since the Gish days and it’s pretty much been a long, slow fall since then. I gave Corgan the benefit of the doubt with all this drama until I saw his whiny self-loathing attitude on the Pumpkins recent documentary and then heard about his verbal attacks on FANS at recent concerts. Have fun by yourself Billy.

Captain Molotov | 3/24/2009, 2:21 pm EST

Good for Jimmy, then. He seems like he’s doing it for honest reasons with pure intention.

Corgan’s really gotten out of touch. What a narcissistic, greedy corporate stooge that guy has become.

I just gained a monumental level of respect for Jimmy Chamberlin. Good luck to that dude. Billy? Fuck, whatever.

lol | 3/24/2009, 2:35 pm EST

“Wow…

That’s a blow to Billy’s credibility.”

Billy Corgan has credibility?

JP | 3/24/2009, 2:50 pm EST

Maybe it’s just me, but I would love to see Smashing Pumpkins and Guns N Roses go on tour together. Having 2 narcissictic lead singers who think they are “The Band” being cheered on by equally deluded fans who think they are as good or better than they were in their haydays.

new clear day | 3/24/2009, 3:16 pm EST

billy rocks with or with out jimmy!!

BK | 3/24/2009, 3:50 pm EST

Smashing Pumpkins needs to call it a day, wait for about 10 years and then reform with the original line up. They should have done this about 10 years ago.

Tom | 3/24/2009, 4:08 pm EST

I’m sure he’ll still cash those risidual checks from the commercials that use songs he was involved with.

Walker Fan... | 3/24/2009, 4:32 pm EST

Matt Walker blows Jimmy away on the kit any day of the week! Let’s see Matt back on the skins with the Pumpkins and watch it grow?!

SP Fan | 3/24/2009, 5:09 pm EST

Good luck JC!

Honestly, BC is The Smashing Pumpkins. A drummer is a drummer, I don’t care how good JC is.

Look forward to more music… give us another amazing album BC!

Kims Deeler | 3/24/2009, 7:22 pm EST

This is the final nail in the coffin for my disenchantment with Smashing Pumpkins.

Alex | 3/24/2009, 9:26 pm EST

I dont see why anyone thinks that this will make the smashing pumpkins any different. They are still Billy’s band and will remain that, I think they will be fine without Chamberlain, personally Adore was my favorite album and Chamberlain wasn’t part of that.

Southside Irish | 3/24/2009, 10:17 pm EST

Yeah, actually it is a blow to his credibility. Jimmy was the last remaining hope that billy has not completely lost his marbles.

Although he has had some rough years, essentially since Iha left… but dont forget- the guy did write, GISH-SIAMESE DREAM-MELLON COllIE- ADORE – All great albums.

I guess my point is, im not going to shit on the guy. There are far more worthy of being hated

toby | 3/24/2009, 10:36 pm EST

it all seems desperate and trying to hard, this smashing pumpkin tale…..

check your facts rolling stone | 3/25/2009, 12:21 am EST

Billy did not testify in Congress to support the Ticketmaster/Live nation merger. It was in support of artist’s rights to receive compensation from radio stations when their songs are played. He only wrote a letter to Congress regarding the merger.

night train wreck | 3/25/2009, 8:14 am EST

This is bad news, Jimmy has such a unique style it will be missed from future SP music.

This whole “selling out” thing because the music is in commercials is absolute crap.
Listen people, once someone sells thier music for profit; they have sold out!
Its ok to hear the music anywhere but on TV..whoa..he’s “sold out”. Pfft! Idiots.

Sully Erna | 3/25/2009, 8:19 am EST

Now Go Away….

14fringe | 3/25/2009, 10:24 am EST

that comment about Walker being superior to JC is absolute rubbish…I like Walker but he is certainly no Jimmy. Are you his brother or something? I think this whole thing about selling out is a bit out of bounds though. Yes, they have done some things these days that old school SP probably would’ve grimaced at. But the music industry is in a completely different place. I-pods and MP3’s really have changed the way people buy music. SP is used to selling whole albums, not just singles. Whole albums just don’t sell like they used to. They needed to fund the gap. Plus, they are self publishing now which takes capital. Why not make that off a few commercials, if it funds your production/touring going forward? At least you don’t have a record label telling you what you can and can’t do. Seems better ultimately. Best of luck to Billy, Jimmy will be dearly missed by Pumpkin fans the world over.

Petcorp | 3/25/2009, 11:12 am EST

From the very beginning… Corgan was/is “The Smashing Pumpkins” the part of D’arcy or James was absolutely empty in any creative concept, but Jimmy… he gaves a 30-40% of the real song, he prints energy and style, it’s really sad that he leaves, everybody who gave bad comments about the new style of the band is just because they can’t grow up, Corgan is not a kid anymore. They Say “thanks” to the band who give them all just giving no support with st*pid comments. Good Luck Billy.

Sam | 3/25/2009, 11:48 am EST

I wish them the best, in whatever path they choose. A lot of band went through line up changes, and still made it, The Foo Fighters, Chili Peppers, and so on. So, if the Pumpkins go on in different sound so be it.

Esquizorock | 3/25/2009, 12:16 pm EST

Billy is SP. Like Axl is GNR, like Trent Reznor is NIN. Is the same thing. It’s a sh1t that JC leaves the band, because he was its engine for many years; but the answer is the same, Billy is SP.
Kids, grow up, that pretty era was 20 years ago, and it’s true that billy says, you only take care to buy 2 or 3 songs from iTunes, not to feel a complete album.

With or without Jimmy SP will sound the same thing. Like NIN sound without Josh Freeze.

Kims Deeler | 3/25/2009, 3:37 pm EST

Listen, it’s not that billy isnt the entire smashing pumpkins. he is. no doubt about it. James, D’arcy, and Jimmy were just his balls, moral concience, and filter for his ideas.

Provocateur | 3/25/2009, 3:50 pm EST

He finally couldn’t stand Billy Corgan’s egotistical douche bag ways’, this nailed the coffin for Smashing Pumpkins, instead of continuing being part of a big f**k’in orchestra that Billy now has’

Former SP fan | 3/25/2009, 8:22 pm EST

The last hope of The Pumpkins is now gone. If not for Jimmy’s drumming, I wouldn’t have given a second look. With such a blatantly two faced individual fronting the band who could blame him. I couldn’t stand two seconds making music with Billy Corgan. Jimmy deserves a medal for being able to handle such a drama case. No more paying for Corgan’s cashing in on a F’d up childhood for me. There’s a thing called moving FORWARD? Good job Jimmy for taking initiative! It IS all about the music, and not about car ads. Bravo. RIP Smashing Pumpkins.

Former SP fan 2 | 3/25/2009, 8:35 pm EST

Esquizorock you think The Pumpkins will sound the same without Jimmy? That’s SO WRONG!! The difference is as clear as night and day. PLUS true Pumpkin fans DO appreciate the full ALBUM….PLUS B-SIDES, and Billy is wrong for giving in to the “single”. I get SICK of “singles” after a week!
He continually alienates his fans, and now that Jimmy’s gone BC can have fun masterwhacking alone because he’s so impossible and 2 faced.
This is the same guy who got pissed at people (fans!) wanting all their hits at their ANNIVERSARY show! Hello? What was he expecting? It doesn’t mean the band is done (now it is though lol). It should have been a celebration for the fans for actually sticking with his sorry a**. But NO he tries to play some INTEGRITY CARD! He should’ve played that card by not releasing their music to stupid car ads, and other mainstream commercials. I am SO sick of Corgan’s A hole ways getting in the way of his God given talents! I’m OUT!

Former SP fan 3 | 3/25/2009, 8:47 pm EST

Sorry I’m on a rant….Some people’s comments are right on, but other’s are well…..Let me paint a picture about the Pumpkins losing JC. Can you imagine Zeppelin carrying on w/o Bonham? How about Rush without Neil Peart? How about Tool w/o Danny Carey? To the untrained ear probably no big deal…Pumpkin fans have SEEN life w/o JC and it SUCKED! Matt Walker is awesome, but he doesn’t hold a candle to JC.

Siamese Dreamin | 3/25/2009, 11:16 pm EST

While other members may have had minimal imput to the band BC added so much. Unfortunetly SP’s music while prolific over the years has really of late lacked the quality of the early albums. Its a pitty cause I’m a massive fan, and yet I just can’t get into their new stuff, and that doco DVD they put out recently was so hard to watch, its like billy tries to test his fans sometimes.

pulp79 | 3/26/2009, 12:27 pm EST

Walker Fan, you may be a fan of Matt Walker, but to say he’s a better drummer than Chamberlin is laughable. Jimmy’s the best rock drummer of the last 20 years, no question. But I don’t think his departure will interfere with Billy’s writing and recording. There’s plenty of good drummers out there to do studio work. The live shows are what’s going to suffer. That’s where Jimmy becomes maniacal behind the kit. Good luck to both of ‘em. I’ll always be a fan of both.

Nick | 3/30/2009, 5:30 am EST

I’ll always be interested in what Billy is up to, but this definitely signals the end of the Pumpkins to me. Anyone who think the Pumpkins is only Billy is seriously mistaken and doesn’t understand the talent that is Jimmy. My hope is that Billy sets off on his own again.

blumpkins parrish | 3/30/2009, 11:02 pm EST

billy is the architect.

deeznutz | 3/31/2009, 1:10 am EST

Dig “Gish” out of your stacks. Now that was the Smashing Pumpkins, my friends!

Tmoney | 3/31/2009, 8:56 am EST

Danny Carey is the best rock drummer in 20 years, but Jimmy will always be number 2. Love ya Jims. Don’t sell out for no one.

Douglass | 3/31/2009, 11:49 am EST

It is evident when SP released Adore that Jimmy was an essential part of the band. I have never considered them to be whole without D’arcy and James but the band will definitely be lacking without Jimmy. I still love Billy’s music despite what an egomaniac he is.

viktor | 3/31/2009, 2:28 pm EST

“I dont see why anyone thinks that this will make the smashing pumpkins any different”

Are you high? Jimmy’s drumming MADE the band great. Of course it is Billy’s band, but to go on as SP without him is a bad idea. Listen to Adore and then listen to any other SP record, even Zeitgeiest. You’ll see what real SP fans are talking about We will miss you like crazy Jimmy. I still like Billy but wish this wasn’t happening….the two of them were genius together.

Freddie Vee | 3/31/2009, 5:41 pm EST

I hope Billy Corgan can find a great drummer because w/o Jimmy Chamberlain the Pumpkins sound definately will be different. I’m a huge Pumpkins fan of their old and recent material. I probably won’t like Billy’s new sound.

James Iha | 4/5/2009, 1:50 am EST

I told you.

The Real Truth | 5/1/2009, 12:59 pm EST

The Pumpkins have been evolving since Day 1 anyhow…no two records identical. closest ones being Siamese and Mellon Collie…..I am tremendously sad to see Jimmy out of SP again but I also know that the next record will be great as well. (side note: Adore is my 2nd favorite album)

kijou kane | 5/3/2009, 6:23 am EST

Billy Corgan has chosen isolation, or shoule I say assholation, to his own detriment. He doesn’t deserve such a great drummer anyways.

kijou kane | 5/3/2009, 6:25 am EST

Billy Corgan has chosen isolation. More’s the pity (for him).

ka | 6/9/2009, 2:30 pm EST

1993 Had to end sooner or later,in this case it ended in 2009 for Bill.

speezo | 6/11/2009, 4:56 am EST

Well, I would rather pay Corgan to play Superchrist than the shit RS pushes

fuck Springsteen
fuck Kanye, fuck rap in general

who the hell is RS anyway?

and why do people hate Corgan? band broke up, so what? why hate Corgan?

LSD is the greatest thing ever

to the last poster | 6/15/2009, 7:40 pm EST

fuck springsteen? haha yeah I bet LSD is the greatest thing ever

Bobby | 7/16/2009, 11:50 pm EST

Yay Jimmy!… he’s being true to himself… he doesn’t have to defend himself. I always thought he was what made SP at their best really kick ass…

LoopGuru | 8/18/2009, 12:21 pm EST

Now if only Corgan would quit the Smashing Pumpkins… his nasal whine (alternated with baby voice on quiet passages) is what kept me from liking the “band” after the initial hits.

transoniqjohnny | 8/18/2009, 5:03 pm EST

Bill Zero Corgan has produced some the worst, whiney un-Fugazi-like horror and has taken great musicians down with him. He would do better to reach in his pocket and pay for the rest of the newbie drummer’s schooling. Otherwise, the newbie will become Billy’s Bitch. WATCH OUT!

IsolationConservation | 9/8/2009, 5:51 pm EST

Whether the JC is gone or not there are very good drummers out there that can take his place. The whole songs on commercials thing is fine with me. I would much rather the Pumpkins playing on my tv then rap and other crap like kanye west and WTF is up with that song “Your a Jerk” there is no creativity or talent at all these days except bands like Silversun Pickups which I believe are the next Smashing Pumpkins. So I see who cares if SP is on commercials, good for Billy.

JKS | 9/17/2009, 2:45 pm EST

A great drummer to a front-man is like an offensive line for a Quarterback. The QB might be handling the ball and orchestrating the plays, but it won’t amount to squat without the line busting some heads up front. A great drummer can make a bad band sound good, and bad drummer can make a great songwriter sound average.

orange wish | 9/29/2009, 2:46 am EST

haha I didn’t know Jimmy had left the band until a few weeks ago. I think they should just go by “Spirits in the sky now” from now on (which is a cool ensemble with Dave Navarro on the guitar) because the pumpkins are dead.

fdgdfg | 10/2/2009, 3:46 am EST

There are plenty of bands that flux around the central songwriter where it isn’t even an issue for fans… unfortunately, sp fans do not get this.. they aren’t U2..they aren’t the Pixies…they aren’t anyone who would be hampered by anyone’s departure (sad to say, except Jimmy)

kisses and noise | 10/6/2009, 10:55 am EST

Jimmy is the best drummer that ever lived – really. That being said, Billy gets a bad wrap. His ego is a rock urban legend touted by people who aren’t fans at all.

Sell out? The traditional model of income no longer exists. How do you expect these people to survive? I’m glad he sold a few songs in an effort to pay his band and keep his day job. Commercials now are littered with “indie” tracks. Phoenix in a Cadillac spot, Santigold in a Bud Light ad and tons more from Modest Mouse to The Shins and smaller bands with huge indie cred popping up all over. Good for them. I’d rather hear a rock song than a retarded jingle on TV any day. Marketers learned that there are artists out there with tons of awesome songs that would never be heard by the masses otherwise. How many times have you heard a song on TV lately and said, “Who is that?”

Glass and the Machines of God | 11/12/2009, 11:32 pm EST

I can’t think of a bigger f-you to corporate America then selling them a song to use in their credit card commercial about suicide. haha! “Today” is practically public domain. Anyone that learned how to mosh by watching MTV really can’t be too upset about it.
