Inside U2’s Plans to Rock Stadiums Around the Globe

3/23/09, 2:12 pm EST

As Rock Daily previously reported, U2’s 360° Tour will be the band’s most ambitious ever, featuring a massive set piece dubbed “the Claw,” which stands at a towering 164 feet. The Claw is the largest stadium stage set, clocking in twice as high as the piece from the Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang tour. For more on how the Claw was designed and how it will operate, check out Brian Hiatt’s story from the current issue:

In addition, U2 were recently back in Morocco — where much of No Line on the Horizon was recorded — to film the video for the album’s second single, “Magnificent.” Using the city of Fez as a backdrop, Bono and the gang have taken to the streets and “a local riad” for the new video, according to the band’s official Website. U2.com also has a pair of exclusive on-set videos, one featuring the band performing the song in a room with pillows on the floor and the other a short interview with Bono talking about the early call time. Like its predecessor “Get On Your Boots,” the video will be directed by Alex Courtes.

“Magnificent” is the best song on the album. This is a great CD, so refreshing to see a band of this magnitude explore new sounds.

U2’s new set will look cool from the floor, and lower level seats…

But for those stuck up in the nosebleeds, I don’t think it will look very interesting.

I wish they went with a more traditional stadium setup, with a giant backdrop… a la Zoo TV, or Popmart.

360 degrees is good in an arena. But I think a stadium show needs more.

We shall see.

I´m looking forward to the video for “Magnificent”. U2´s work in Fez has been so influential for their album and so it will be great to see this city as a backdrop. The video for “Mysterious Ways” was also shot in Fez in 1991. This is my favourite U2 video, because it´s a very colourful artistic work with great images.

After all the Africa hype and hot air about HIV/AIDS, RED products etc, etc……tell us Bono, which African cities will host the U2 360 concert?
Walk your talk, or risk being called an oportunist.
