Metallica Pound SXSW With 90-Minute Greatest-Hits Set at “Surprise” Show

3/21/09, 10:00 am EST

“Surprise, surprise — you’re all surprised, right?” singer-guitarist James Hetfield cracked in his sea-captain’s growl, leering at the heaving crowd two songs into Metallica’s poorly kept-secret SXSW show, March 20th at Stubb’s. “Thank you for letting us come to your party.” Then his voice changed. “We are an unsigned band from Norway,” he said in a terrible Scandanavian accent and Andy Kaufman-like chirp. “Maybe we get signed.” Any unsigned Norwegian band that could write and play anything as smart and brutal as Metallica’s next song, “Harvester of Sorrow,” would have been signed before it left the building.

So you ask: Why Metallica at SXSW? The answer: Why the hell not? SXSW stopped being only about alternative rock and regional baby bands when superstars started giving the keynote speeches and the acts playing corporate-sponsor day parties outnumbered the evening showcases. Metallica were at SXSW to sell their imminent edition of the interactive video game Guitar Hero. But they ended up proving something else: You don’t get anywhere in this world, with a guitar, in a band, until you get off the couch. (Hetfield talked Guitar Hero, the sound quality of Death Magnetic and more in a SXSW interview with RS.)

The promotion was in full effect — Metallica played in front of a giant Guitar Hero banner, and one of the opening acts was a trio of local Guitar Hero contest winners, who “played” a version of “Fuel” on Guitar Hero “instruments.” But the real deal came to perform, opening with “Creeping Death” and, except for two Death Magnetic numbers, giving the audience 90 minutes of greatest hits, including “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “One,” “Sad But True” and a scorched-earth tear through “Master of Puppets.” There was, surprisingly, no “Enter Sandman.” Instead, Metallica ended the set with a rare “Blackened” from … And Justice for All and started the three-song encore with their Garage Days-EP roasting of Budgie’s “Breadfan.”

The primary lesson of this show: You can learn how to play like Metallica with Guitar Hero. But this is what it takes to A be them: Lars Ulrich’s precision-cannon-fire drum intro to “Creeping Death”; Kirk Hammett’s wah-wah bark and furious shred-and-melody solo in “Cyanide”; Hammett and Hetfield’s elegy-harmony guitars in the bridge of “Master of Puppets”; bassist Robert Trujillo’s thick tight runs and prowling-animal crouch. Note to those Guitar Hero contest winners, who stared at their “instruments” like they feared electrocution: The stage is for posing.

“Live music is where it’s at for us,” Hetfield said midway through the set. “We’ve been road dogs since the day I left high school.” He repeated the message at the very end, after a Kill ‘Em All sandwich of “Whiplash” and “Seek and Destroy.” “God bless loud live music,” Hetfield bellowed, like he was marshalling troops for battle. In other words, have fun, play Guitar Hero: Metallica. Then get off the fucking couch.

“You can learn how to play like Metallica with Guitar Hero”… uh, are you on crack… you can learn how to push plastic buttons on guitar hero, most of the f-tards playing GH who end up buying a REAL guitar quickly learn how hard the real thing is– and how much they really suck.

Dianna | 3/21/2009, 12:24 pm EST

One of my favoret bands they are the best!you got to love them

*snore*

these guys are done

Steel Dragon | 3/21/2009, 3:00 pm EST

****snore***

To the idiots who think this band is done.

- #1 album
- Platinum Status
- Successful U.S Tour (I don’t see Metallica needing to be part of some nostalic metal package to fill large venues.)
- Critical acclaim and Grammy wins for latest album.

Metallica remains the most important band of the genre.

Ask Mastodon, Trivium, Machine Head and Avenge Sevenfold, they’ll be the first to tell you.

Stick to Employee Picks at Waterloo Records, if you’re looking for fleeting credibility.

Dude Man | 3/21/2009, 3:27 pm EST

Alright, Metallica are just a great hard rock and heavy metal band. I am glad to see that they are still doing well for themselves.

Anonymous | 3/21/2009, 4:11 pm EST

I don’t like them much but I was there and they did kick ass. Far from done, mate.

will | 3/21/2009, 5:52 pm EST

who cares ?.

Mitch | 3/21/2009, 6:22 pm EST

live in austin,

Shut the fuck up.

That’s about the nicest way I can say that. Metallica and their million-selling new album and countless sold out arena-gigs are more relevant now than you’ll ever be.

Dude Man | 3/21/2009, 6:37 pm EST

I’m also glad to see that Budgie are finally getting the respect they deserve. Although I think the original version of Breadfan is better, the Metallica version is respestful to that really underrated band.

sc | 3/21/2009, 7:09 pm EST

the best thing about GH is that my 9 year old son loves it and now knows songs from metallica, gnr, and the like and had me put them on a IPOD for him. That then led the way to him liking some velvet revolver and other stuff. thats whats freakin cool about GH

Denton | 3/21/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Strictly Commercial. What a freakin’ joke. Not only has Metallica sold out, so has SXSW.

crap shit shorts | 3/21/2009, 8:52 pm EST

I crapped my shit shorts

'Tallica Fan | 3/21/2009, 10:48 pm EST

Wasn’t the sell out thing old fifteen years ago? If Metallica did indeed sell out, it’s old news.

tester | 3/21/2009, 10:51 pm EST

Metallica wishes they were half as good as Norwegian bands.

xim1970 | 3/21/2009, 10:56 pm EST

I totally agree…sellouts, but you’ve got to give them credit (finally) for listening to the fans! No more “Enter Sandman”…the best track off of the “Black” album was “Sad But True”. St. Anger brought back a bit more of the aggro…but Death Magnetic is as close as they’ll probably ever come to being the “Kill ‘Em All” and “Ride the Lightning” era of Metallica. Let’s face it…we all get old, and I say, let’s give a hand for a HUGE step forward in these mid-40 metalheads making a great new album. Oh, but you DO suck for subscribing to the “Guitar Hero” label. I play an actual guitar and can play much of the stuff from “Kill ‘Em All” to “Black”. I think it’s a great encouragement tool, but it doesn’t encourage kids to learn how to play a real guitar, and make their own voice heard. Love Metallica, hate Guitar Hero. Sorry, posers!!!

Ragnar Dannjeskold | 3/21/2009, 11:10 pm EST

After seeing Metallica in concert once, and reading Mr.Fricke’s intensive description, I must say you make them sound like they are out for complete annihilation; but live they sound like a candlelight vigil in a battle that’s ran on for days.

They are businessmen. Not musicians. They left being musicians quite sometime ago. I hope everyone knows this and holds it close, especially because it’s so true.

Here are some suggestion for excellent metal: Maudlin of the Well, Amon Armath, Atheist, Death, and, hell, even the Sword.

virgil | 3/21/2009, 11:42 pm EST

Why in this day an age, do wieners still cry about bands selling out!Get over it, and get a life.

sherrie travis | 3/21/2009, 11:51 pm EST

The show must go on. Metallica
rocks!!!!

st anger 561 | 3/22/2009, 12:22 am EST

metallica is the best band ever, totally rock! I have seen them 10 times live

Jed | 3/22/2009, 6:48 am EST

Nice!

dude | 3/22/2009, 11:19 am EST

anyone who calls any band sellouts is clearly narrowminded and shallow. if you were in a band as long as they have wouldnt you wanna break outa the box and do things no one would predict? i would, it keeps things exciting. theyve been called sellouts since ride the lightning when they wrote their first ballad, then again in 1986 when they signed onto a major record label, then in 1988 when they made their first video and then of course the black album which is self explanatory. thats why i love this band! there arent afraid to take chances. i wish more metal bands had the balls to be more daring. would u rather they just made an album like kill em all over and over again? boring….the reason why this band has had successful longevity is cuz they had the balls to grow and evolve. every band needs to.

phil | 3/22/2009, 1:55 pm EST

i agree with sean the best band ever look at what they have done and you think they care what anyone thinks of them and the answer is no they are laughing all the way to the back metallica is the best

David | 3/22/2009, 2:27 pm EST

Megadeth > Metallica

Frodeguns | 3/22/2009, 3:08 pm EST

Metallica is among my absolute favourite bands of all time! In my oppinion Guns N Roses, ACDC and Metallica is the best hard rock/heavy metal bands!

pharaozcurse | 3/22/2009, 3:21 pm EST

ya i agree that metallica has sold out. I’ve seen them 15 times and they were SOLD OUT every show! long live metallica and cant wait for guitar hero!genius idea. if you think it was fun playing “freebird” wait till your playing “master!”

wolfie | 3/22/2009, 5:03 pm EST

Awesome!! Wish I could have been there. I am so glad they are embracing technology now rather than dissing it–anyone remember Lars and Napster? I am impressed that they know their audience and can not wait for Guitar hero:Metallica, Guitar Hero:Kiss Guitar Hero:The Doors Guitar Hero:Hendrix–it’s just a far cry from the early days of PONG–the future is now–if only ALICE COOPER could get one out. Could The Beatles and The Stones be far behind? Sad that Zeppelin won’t come aboard–new generations are waiting through all kinds of vehicles—LONG LIVE METALLICA!!!!!

RC | 3/22/2009, 10:56 pm EST

Was surprised when I walked in and they were coming on.

Wish they woulda cleared the stage faster for DJ Shadow…

Good show either way! I’ve followed some of their stuff for a long time, not a big fan but like a lot of bands, seeing them LIVE is really a whole lot better. They did a great set whether you like them or not, i’d see them again under the circumstances…

Charlie Miller | 3/23/2009, 7:19 am EST

Megadeth > Metallica. Hell, Kill ‘em All is really Mustaine’s album anyway, not to mention chunks of Ride the Lightning.

Nathaniel Hornblower | 3/23/2009, 8:08 am EST

Norwegian metal > Metallica

Michael | 3/23/2009, 12:39 pm EST

There’s not much you can say to someone who has something bad to say about Metallica. Except Fuck you 1000%.

Arch Stanton | 3/23/2009, 1:11 pm EST

They never will just fade away. Cliff would be bummed. At least Jason had the guts to split. If Lars was offered enough money he would tour with the Jonas Bros. Long Live Cobain….

Leon | 3/23/2009, 1:28 pm EST

I was there….well by there I mean on the roof of a parking garage overlooking stubbs….
The show was amazing and delightfully unexpected. Afterwards DJ Shadow played a good set. All in all, it was a good night.

MB | 3/23/2009, 2:02 pm EST

Metallica Rock! I love em and it saddens me that people still need to talk trash when all these guys do is please the fans. So what if they joined GH every other band is. And if a band hasnt its only because there not good enough for GH to even care! Long live Metallica!

dude | 3/23/2009, 4:52 pm EST

arch stanton your stupid! ‘long live cobain’?! he was a coward who couldnt handle the reality that he brought onto himself. hez the one that decided to get sighned onto a major record label so he shouldve known his personal life was gonna be put under a telescope. he shouldve been aware of what he was getting himself into b4 he got into the music business. then what does he do to ease the pressure? pump his veins full of smack and blow his brains out. im a fan of nirvana but cobain has nothin on metallica.

Alcoholica | 3/23/2009, 4:54 pm EST

Arch Stanton Metallica has done 9 studio albums, Nirvana only had 3. I love both Metallica and Nirvana but to compare the 2 is very difficult, no one knows how all there albums would have been if they made it too 9… And lets face it first 5 Metallica albums are all classics just as good as the 3 Nirvana albums.

That said I will not hate either band, but if your going to hate on one I’m going to raise the hard questions. Everyone wants to put Nirvana on a pedestal but the truth is they weren’t around look enough to slip up.

jROYAL | 3/24/2009, 12:38 am EST

Sheesh…more battle of the bands with you guys…try these, how ’bout The Cult VRS Pearl Jam
Jesus and Mary Chain VRS Catherine Wheel
Siverchair VRS Wolfmother
Sonic Youth VRS Jane’s Addiction
The Church VRS REM

caraandrobb | 3/24/2009, 6:50 am EST

I dont believe Metallica are sellouts. I do believe Metallica has SUCKED since after And Justice For All. Even that album was so-so. The first 3 Metallica albums were fantastic, ground breaking metal albums. Justice sounded like an attempt to keep up with taht, but just wasnt as good. All the albums after that have sucked. Metallica became became just another hard rock alternative band after Justice. Its a damn shame. I dont think they are sellouts, I just think they suck now.

Anonymous | 3/24/2009, 11:40 am EST

too bad for SXSW. that used to be the coolest thing, now it’s another overdone, commercialized event.

Dave D | 3/24/2009, 11:47 am EST

SXSW are the sell-outs for having a band like Metallica play. Kinda like how Bonaroo sucks now!

Josh | 3/24/2009, 1:58 pm EST

I love all you indie rock snobs that think people like Kanye and Metallica don’t ‘belong’ at any of your “we couldn’t cut it on a REAL festival bill, so us 2nd/3rd stringers will have this” fest type bullshit. Fuck you, go listen to bright eyes and cut yourselves

Josh | 3/24/2009, 2:01 pm EST

I love all you indie rock snobs that think people like Metallica don’t ‘belong’ at your “we couldn’t cut it on a REAL festival bill, so us 2nd/3rd stringers will have this” fest type bullshit. Fuck you, go listen to bright eyes and cut yourselves. Bands like MetallicA set the bar higher than you’ll ever reach.

Dave D | 3/24/2009, 2:34 pm EST

At least you said you love us! Seriously though, were not snobs just annoyed that all good things must end and that they eventually feel that they should cater to the masses. Atleast I still have Gathering of the Vibes, for now. Till I don’t have that, I will refrain from cutting myself..bud.

Rex Everything | 3/25/2009, 2:24 pm EST

Whether you love Metallica, hate them, or are over them by now, I think their appearance at SXSW is good for the obscure bands trying to get signed and/or get their music out there.

wogdog | 3/25/2009, 8:46 pm EST

megadethis not>metallica. peace sells was close but theyve been downhill eversince. Saw that tour at the stone sf and yes…they slayed but DM is a dick…not that lars isnt but mustaine takes the cake.

havent liked any records since justice really…that one is indeed so so…they should have let newsted play bass audibly on that one….

MOP is the pinnacle of their catalog. and Kill em al isnt mostly mustaine…if it were you would have seen more crossover jams like mechanix on killing is my business

anyhoo

WEEN is the best band in the world by far…..AND SXSW is a industry mutual masturbation wackoff party…no one goes there to get signed they go there to see signed bands

MetalMike | 3/26/2009, 3:53 am EST

I would include AJFA with Metallica’s ground-breaking first 3 albums because it has some excellent songs on it, including Harvester of Sorrow, Blackened, One amongst others. In my opinion the biggest drop-off was between AJFA and the Black Album. Load was OK, at least it was listenable. I really disliked the country western turn ReLoad took, and hated the drums in St. Anger. I thought that the lousy, tinny-sounding drums killed that album and made it unlistenable, even though there was a couple of pretty good tracks on that one. The latest album is really good though, it is right up there with AJFA in my book, just short of their first three. I have listened to it probably about 50 times already, about every-other day or so and still find new things in it. That is about 10x more than I’ve listened to their previous 3 albums combined, so in my book this is a major return to form for the Metallicats…

Shauny J | 3/27/2009, 2:38 am EST

All these sell out comments when you start a rock band dont you want to sell millions of records, tour the world, groupies, drugs the whole kit and kaboodle.

No you wanna spend your time playin for your 50 hard core fans at a shitty bar gettin paid little or nothing a night and say “I didnt sell out how great are we”TALLICA FOR LIFIFE FUCKERZ

fulgensius | 5/29/2009, 10:37 am EST
