Max Weinberg’s Son to Sub in at a Handful of Springsteen Gigs

3/20/09, 12:39 pm EST

Max Weinberg’s 19-year-old son Jay Weinberg will be subbing in for his father on a “small number” of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band gigs this summer. It will likely only be for the European leg of the tour, since that coincides with the June 2nd premiere of Conan O’Brien’s Tonight Show, featuring Max as the bandleader. “Once again, I want to express my appreciation to Conan O’Brian, and everyone on his team, for making it possible for Max to continue to do double duty  for both us and for him,” Bruce Springsteen said in a statement. “We promise to return him in one piece.” Max Weinberg joined the E Street Band in 1974 and hasn’t missed a single show since. Jay Weinberg, who plays in the metal band The Reveling, played “Born To Run” at Giants Stadium last summer (captured in the fancam footage above). According to fan reports, Jay has been rehearing with the E Street Band all week in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Last month Rock Daily spoke to E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt about the possibility of Max missing some gigs. “It’s hard for me to picture a show without Max, honestly,” he said. “It really won’t be the E Street Band. I guess various members will come and go as we go through these last few years together. If there’s a few shows where he’s not there, I’m sure it will be fine. Most of the time he’s gotta be there though. There’s no drummer that could replace Max. There might be someone temporary that comes in and we’ll have to adjust the show accordingly. What nobody understands is that not only is Max a great drummer, Max reads Bruce’s mind. You can’t learn that. That’s impossible to learn. You could spend months rehearsing and you’ll never get that.”

Jay Weinberg is gonna be awesome. Just looking at that clip he hits those drums harder than Max and is exciting to watch. Wish I was gonna be at one of those Europe shows.

spencer | 3/20/2009, 4:01 pm EST

i was at that show at giants stadium and he was great. he played the same beats as his father, but brought more of that hard rock/heavy metal power to the band, which is perfect for those european outdoor shows. i think he’ll do really well. we’ll all miss max, but jay will do his dad proud.

VCartier | 3/20/2009, 4:04 pm EST

I want to see Jay hammer out that monstrous drum roll at the end of “Born in the USA.”

Bruce Johnston/The Beach Boys | 3/20/2009, 10:35 pm EST

I watched Jay just now on YouTube and he will be just fine subbing for his dad.
FYI: Jay;s dad often sat in for a few songs at Beach Boys concerts and rocked the place! What a great drumming family….

Nice work!

All I can say is MAX BETTER BE AT BONNAROO!!

Also, the writers of Conan better be smart enough to send a camera along….how great would a ‘Max at Bonnaroo’ segment be?

The Wretched | 3/21/2009, 10:48 am EST

Anyone can replace Max. Bruce’s music has some of the easiest drum parts in all of popular music. Any average drummer can fill the part. I understand the emotional attachment… but I have been drumming for over 15 years, have done my share of pro-gigs… and believe me… all these songs can be learned in less than 3 days.

Maybe Jay will be more innovative than just playing back-beat/in the pocket rhythms.

JohnnyRussia | 3/21/2009, 1:29 pm EST

To The Wretched: in-the-pocket rock ‘n roll drumming shouldn’t be busy, Neil Peart-style over-playing. To you I guess, that’s “easy.” I suppose you could replace Charlie Watts and Keith would never know, too. Over-playing is what the self-conscious, too-eager-to-please guys do. “Anyone” can replace Max, huh? Sure, Ringo: those previous 35 years don’t mean a thing, huh?

Basket Case | 3/21/2009, 9:55 pm EST

Don’t worry…these are just the gigs Gene Krupa has been planning his comeback for!!!!!! If he can’t make it, I hear Micky Dolenz is poised to go!!!!!!!

Anonymous | 3/22/2009, 9:40 am EST

I graduated high school with Jay last spring, and have had the opportunity to go to his house and hear him play. I know Jay will be awesome filling in for his dad, and I believe he wouldn’t have agreed to this if Jay didn’t believe that he could satisfy himself and the crowd. Max is leaving Jay some pretty big shoes to fill, but I know Jay–after 4 years of high school with him, I know that he will do this and put everything he’s got into it. I’m sure he’ll be amazing.

Hole | 3/22/2009, 11:43 pm EST

Ummm…Wolfgang in the house?

Maria | 3/23/2009, 9:09 am EST

Jay will be awesome!! He’ll be a great drummer if he wants to. I saw him at Giants Stadium, but I also heard him at his website at myspace and in my opinion plays increadible!!
We’ll have great nights of rock&roll with him at the band!!

Mark | 3/23/2009, 11:08 am EST

As long as Bruce’s son doesn’t fill in for his dad.

Crappy drumming, father to son | 3/23/2009, 12:16 pm EST

This is real fair.
The f***king kid gets to get a gig because he knows someone?
F****k the children of these a–hole musicians.
They never paid their dues.
They never had to gig and work hard and pay their dues.
They were rich from birth.
This is real fair. Wow.
Bruce won’t give a real musician a choice?
He’s a docuche bag anyway.

Jon G. | 3/23/2009, 1:23 pm EST

“Crappy drumming” – jealous much? I think this is really cool – if Jay couldn’t hack it, he wouldn’t be doing it – period.

Banshee | 3/23/2009, 1:27 pm EST

Check out The Reveling they’re awesome!!!!

Steve | 3/23/2009, 4:58 pm EST

Crappy drumming- I think you’re the douche bag. You think an artist like Bruce would just let some kid drum with the E Street Band just because of his dad???

No f’n way. He’s obviously worthy if Bruce and the rest of the band are letting this happen.

JD | 3/23/2009, 11:33 pm EST

Do people get paid for stupid posts? If so, there are some wealthy posters on this one!

Anyone can replace Max???
Have you actually been to a Springsteen show?

The Intl | 3/24/2009, 1:33 am EST

Now who can they get to replace that no-talent wife?

J. RANDY THORNTON-ATHENS,TX | 3/24/2009, 1:47 am EST

I see someone has beat me to the Peart reference, but anyway, yall, SHUT UP! It does not take a Neal Peart style drummer to hold Bruce & the E-Street stars together. Its not THAT hard to be the engine that keeps Bruce on track & running on top. Any 15 year old that can keep a true & steady beat could do that job. The Street would cover him with EXTREAM PREDJUDICE. These guys are nothing but professional. End of report.

kingpin | 3/24/2009, 2:53 pm EST

Crappy drumming, wow who peed in your post toasties ? with a chip on your shoulder that enormous and an attitude like that i can’t imagine anyone wanting to have you on as a bandmember
good luck with all of that !

flank | 3/24/2009, 10:35 pm EST

There’s no reason Max needs to miss a gig.If he wanted to make it he would make it. Bruce shouldn’t make any excuses for him.
Maybe it’s time to open the drum stool to the public at large.
Give everyone a chance to sit in with Bruce on stage. Better than just handing it to his own son. epotism.

black bottom | 3/24/2009, 10:42 pm EST

Who does Max Weinberg think he is?

Kenny Aronoff?

Steady on the 2 & 4 | 3/26/2009, 4:53 pm EST

When I first started drumming, one of the first albums I played along too was “Born in the USA”. Technical drumming – not quite, but that doesn’t mean it’s crappy. Does Neil Peart (in my opinion one of the best EVER to pick up sticks) isn’t the right fit here. Someone that can sit in the pocket and play a powerful beat with an occassional fill is what this band needs.

Personally I think it’s great that Bruce is letting Max’s son sub for him. He probably knows the catalog, and is familiar with Max’s set up, and how the sets go. Smart move.

I’m glad Max is doing the US leg – looking forward to the Greensboro show in May!

Mike | 3/27/2009, 5:36 pm EST

Think he might light to try,
STICK STUFF ??? Solid Drummer for the part!

urq | 4/1/2009, 2:20 pm EST

welcome jay, kepp your dad’s chair warm

Jesse3 | 4/12/2009, 10:58 am EST

To All of You Nay Sayers:
I had the good fortune to attend the rehearsals in Convention Hall a couple of weeks ago where Jay sat in a great deal. There is NO QUESTION whatsoever that he is amazingly talented and deserves to sit in with the band. He not only did a good job, he did a fantastic job! Unless you have seen him first hand, keep your opinions to yourself…you don’t know what you’re talking about!

Dave Lombardo | 4/13/2009, 5:47 pm EST

Chris Dangerous from the Hives please.

Jo | 4/18/2009, 8:46 pm EST

I saw Jay at the LA concert on thursday night and he was so awesome!! Amazing that he is only 19. He will be great.

ann | 4/29/2009, 11:37 am EST

i was at the spectrum concert last night. jay was unbelievable!!!

Jane | 4/29/2009, 12:02 pm EST

bob | 4/30/2009, 1:52 pm EST

THis kid was incredible at the Spectrum show last night. He beats the hell out of the drums.

THis kid was incredible at the Spectrum show last night. He beats the hell out of the drums.

Kelly | 4/30/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Jay Weinberg was absolutely IMPRESSIVE!
My eyes were on him for 3/4 of the show last night!
You Go Jay!
Job well done Max!

Ferg | 4/30/2009, 6:37 pm EST

Went to the concert in Philly last night. Jay is outstanding! Just amazing stuff.

Ted | 4/30/2009, 8:46 pm EST

Also went last night to Philly show. I am a huge Max fan and I was blown away by the raw talent of his son Jay at such a young age. Of course Jay has the best teacher around in his Dad, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. Jay’s future has no limits,
he played half the show last night and was totally on the same wave length with Bruce. Max is very proud as he should be. Can’t wait to follow Jay’s career.

Reese | 5/1/2009, 10:59 pm EST

I saw both Philly shows….Jay kicked total ass and Bruce was lovin’ the energy! You couldn’t get the smile off of Springsteen’s face!! Stand by as Jay will be driving the ladies wild!!!!!!!

TomWoolf | 5/3/2009, 10:36 am EST

I saw the concert in Greensboro, NC last night. I was curious as to who the young guy playing drums was. The next thought was “shoot, he’s young enough to be one of their kids (or even grandkids if they got busy early)… I didn’t find out who he was until I found this article this morning.

Jay Weinberg was good. Real good. He played the first part of the concert, which mostly featured songs from the 90’s and later. Springsteen announced his name a few times, but I still could not catch it (had something to do with the very happy lady from Maryland behind me screaming in my ear all night).

At one point, Springsteen announced the drummer was being replaced by “a slightly older guy”, and Max Weinberg came out and finished the show (Jay came out for the encore, though).

Max’s son did justice to the music, which is all the fans could ask for. The drooling by the ladies over the kid was icing on the cake for them.

So, to all the folks who made knee-jerk “screw xyz for putting the son in there”… yes – nepotism can suck. But then, so can mindless jerks who make blanket assumptions such as “This is real fair.
The f***king kid gets to get a gig because he knows someone?
F****k the children of these a–hole musicians.” Watch a show before you make your judgment. If Jay Weinberg is as good at your show as he was in Greensboro, you’ll be impressed.

Beth | 5/3/2009, 1:35 pm EST

I just saw Bruce in Greensboro on May 2nd. Jay opened the show with no explanation from Bruce as to why Max was not there. After the first set Max appeared and the fans nearly brought down the house when he showed up. Max played the next set and then left and Jay returned to finish the show. While Jay is incredibly talented, especially for his youth and short duration in training himself on the drums, there is a seasoned difference that his father exudes in his own talent that Jay may also one day exhibit given time and experience. Regardless, Jay brought a great energy to the band and it was obvious that Bruce has a strong admiration and comfort level with him already. It was a pleasure to see this father/son tag-team performance in Greensboro! I really hope this isn’t the band’s last tour!

joel | 5/4/2009, 10:51 pm EST

I have 40 years drum experience and tour the world. The comment that “any basic drummer could do the gig ” is ludacris. Jay was adequate. Very impressive for such a young player. Max is a master on a par with the greats. Fact.

Nick | 5/15/2009, 1:00 am EST

i just got back from the Albany show, Jay’s first FULL concert with the Estreet Band……He stole the show, he brought a Energy to the Estreet band that i cant describe. i didnt miss max to much

Mike | 5/15/2009, 1:19 am EST

Jay put in a very respectable performance tonight in Albany. He did the entire show, a first according to Bruce. His technique is very similar to his dad’s, and given time to hone his skills, he should be an excellent fit for the East Street Band.

JB | 5/15/2009, 1:29 pm EST

I am very disappointed that I paid over $100 to see the E Street Band and now it’s being announced that Max Weinberg’s metalhead nerd son will be on drums. This is clearly poor planning on the part of Weinberg and the Boss and it’s really unfortunate to those of us who would like to see the REAL E Street Band no matter how adept Jay is at drums.

Tine | 5/15/2009, 4:37 pm EST

I saw the show in Albany last night,I love Bruce, but my eyes were totally on Jay for most of the show. I’ve never seen a drummer work so hard for soo long. He was awesome. He rocked!! I think it is great he can fill in for his Dad.

Bill | 5/16/2009, 10:03 am EST

Just saw Bruce in Albany, it’s been since the early 80’s since I last saw the band in the Carrier Dome, believe me this band still has it, unending energy. When I saw that Max wasn’t on stage, I figured the show was going to be ho-hum, not a chance. Jay pumped even more energy into the show, I’ve never seen a drummer work so hard. There isn’t anyone else that would be up for playing that hard, not even his dad…well maybe Bruce himself could outlast the youngster…

If you have a chance, don’t miss this concert…as for me, I’m heading to Pittsburgh for the next show.

Daniel E | 5/17/2009, 11:03 pm EST

I’d just like to be reassured that Jay is not being groomed to replace Max for the sake of Conan O’Brien. I was always fine with the arrangement whereby Max’s first priority was E Street Band business, but I have an uneasy feeling about the way this whole matter is playing out. OK-Conan needs (wants) Max around for the Tonight show startup, but at what point do things go back to the way they were, if ever? Seems to me there’s a precedent being set here, and I for one don’t like it at all, regardless of how competent a fill-in Jay is. Hope I’m just being paranoid…

Jen | 5/22/2009, 10:43 am EST

I saw the show last night and thought Max was gone! I had no idea it was his son. I was impressed before I even knew then when Bruce said it I had tears in my eyes. Hats off to Max- and especially to Jay- he was a pro!!!! I love it. I couldn’t stop watching him!

ACL | 5/26/2009, 9:11 pm EST

We saw Jay Weinberg at the Hershey Pa concert May 15. He was phenomenal and is a prodigy. He brought so much energy to the stadium and everyone cheered for him. He is incredible and could perform with any rock band in the world.

Lahtinen | 6/3/2009, 6:28 am EST

I saw Jay Weinberg playing yesterday evening in Tampere, Finland. He was amazing!

He’s really talented (not just talented for a 19 year old, but _really_ talented), and obviously knows Bruces music to the smallest detail.

I have to say that I missed Max playing in one song (Born to Run), because I really like the total concentration that Max has when playing that song.

But it was great to watch Jay sing along to the lyrics of Bobby Jean!

Virtanen | 6/3/2009, 7:42 am EST

After hearing Jay on the drums yesterday, I can’t think of a better stand-in for Max. He deserves that seat, he brought something new to the beat. Best of luck to him with his career! I’d like to see him again with the E Street Band.

Danielle | 8/26/2009, 11:18 am EST

Jay was soooo good i dont know how people can be mad about that. and hes only 19!!! and hes HOT!

Derek | 9/17/2009, 12:15 am EST

Just saw the band in Greenville SC. Jay was fantastic and worked his a#$ off. Awesome improv of “Satisfaction”

Doug | 9/17/2009, 6:49 am EST

Just saw the E Streeters in Greenville. Jay rocked!
This was my tenth show and the Boss has not slowed down.
Max is great but Jay added his flair to the show. AWESOME!
