Eminem, Jimmy Page, Flea Among Presenters At 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony

3/20/09, 12:12 pm EST

Eminem, Jimmy Page, Ronnie Wood and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers are among the artists who will induct the 2009 class of Rock and Roll Hall of Famers at a ceremony in Cleveland on April 4th. Eminem, who returns from a long hiatus with a pair of Relapse albums due out this year, will welcome rap icons Run-DMC into the Rock Hall. San Francisco metal gods Metallica will be inducted by Flea, whose own band will become Rock Hall-eligible next year.

(Photos: see this year’s Rock Hall class and the artists who will honor them.)

One Yardbird will induct another as Jimmy Page salutes his former band mate and fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jeff Beck. This will be Beck’s second time as an inductee: he entered the Hall as a Yardbird in 1992; this time it’s for his solo work. (Page, himself a two-time Hall of Famer reentered as a member of Led Zeppelin in ‘95.) This year’s all-star jam already promises to be a guitar fan’s dream. Not only will Beck, Page and James Hetfield be on hand, but Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood will be there to induct R&B singer-guitarist Bobby Womack.

A pair of popular late-night television musicians will also be on hand. David Letterman’s sidekick Paul Shaffer will honor songwriting great Spooner Oldham, while E Streeter and Conan O’Brien bandleader Max Weinberg will welcome DJ Fontana into the Hall. Another E Street Band member will take the stage when bassist Garry Tallent posthumously inducts Elvis Presley’s bassist Bill Black. Finally, Smokey Robinson will take the podium to pay tribute to vocal group Little Anthony & the Imperials.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be carried live on Fuse at 9 pm on April 4th, and Rolling Stone will have you covered in the days leading up to the event. “Eminem, Jimmy Page, Ronnie Wood and Flea *of the Red Hot Chili Peppers* are among the artists…”

Thanks for clearing that up–I wasn’t sure who Flea was, but now I know.

guitar_davey | 3/20/2009, 12:54 pm EST

Now is that “Ronnie Wood from the Faces/Rolling Stones” and “Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin,” or is it a different Jimmy Page and Ronnie Wood?

MB | 3/20/2009, 1:03 pm EST

Dont you think its strange that Eminem is at the rock and roll hall of fame? There running out of bands lol.

basser | 3/20/2009, 1:15 pm EST

Ron Wood is alive? Yeah, I was worried, with the Faces 2009 Reunion Tour being cancelled and all …. I hope Wood gets healthier and is happy.

I was hoping for a Faces tour – love the Stones, but we need a Faces tour more than another Stones tour these days ….

Jeremy | 3/20/2009, 1:17 pm EST

When the hell are they going to give Warren Zevon a nod. He was such a fantastic artist.

Naldo | 3/20/2009, 1:36 pm EST

Damn straight Jeremy, Zevon is the man.

stupid Feminem | 3/20/2009, 1:39 pm EST

What the hell is wrong with this Eminem turd,,,,he is either scowling at the camera or bitching about how hard his life is,,,,,,what a complete putz.

meshugenna | 3/20/2009, 1:49 pm EST

“not only will Beck, Page and James Hetfield be on hand, but Ron Wood will be there….” Are you daft, putting him in the same category as the other three??? He’s a pretty good bass player, but as a lead/rhythm guy, he just sucks.

Ed | 3/20/2009, 1:59 pm EST

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

M | 3/20/2009, 2:17 pm EST

Eminem is ridiculous

eightball | 3/20/2009, 2:28 pm EST

Meshugennna: Ronnie isnt a lead guitar player, so thats -1 for you already. Secondly, Hetfield is rhythm guitarist, not a lead, so he isn’t with Beck or Page either. -2. good day

McObama | 3/20/2009, 2:29 pm EST

meshugenna take a guitar lesson!

Avacado | 3/20/2009, 2:47 pm EST

To all the “commentors” above. You guys are hysterical! I enjoyed your comments more than the news of this event! Also how did Eminen get in amongst all amazing guitarists? Does he play? Guitar?

Kevin | 3/20/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Despise rap, but Eminem is the only artist who is DECENT from the rap genre. You actually listen to some of his lyrics he actually tell’s a story. But I still wonder, why the hell is he at Rock and Roll hall of fame?

The Dude | 3/20/2009, 3:39 pm EST

Run DMC did “King of ROCK”, with hard rock/heavy metal guitars way before Kid Rock and nu metal crap. Anyone saying Eminem is the only good rapper is a racist prick, and forgot Larry Bud Melman showing up on the same video telling Run DMC they didn’t belong there. And they told him off in the song.

Speaking of racist jerks, how is James Hetfield being inducted by someone as cool as Flea, who plays music Hetfield hates to the bottom of his redneck heart?

blah | 3/20/2009, 4:17 pm EST

If this so called “Rock n Roll” hall of fame wants any relevance at all it needs to stop letting this rap crap in and let them have their own hall of shame!

Mark | 3/20/2009, 4:21 pm EST

I’m going to have my TV on mute while I’m listening to Rush. Then, when I see Beck and Page, I’ll unmute the TV. After that, I’ll go back to listening to Rush.

zeezuma | 3/20/2009, 4:27 pm EST

Spooner Oldham will be a fine addition to the hall.. what a fantastic musician…

Knuckles | 3/20/2009, 5:03 pm EST

Hey Mark,

Will you have your finger up your butt while you are busy listening to Rush?? :)

Bluesman | 3/20/2009, 5:24 pm EST

How is Freddie King not in the rock n roll hall of fame?

Hummer | 3/20/2009, 5:26 pm EST

outta anyone, they pick Flea?

im into a bit of rock but im a total hip hop hardcore fan so aslong as he is on im wactching and dat prick stupid feminem get a fuckin life you got a problem wid em i suggest u take it up wid him instead ov bitching abowt it ere

HuskerDude | 3/20/2009, 5:35 pm EST

Guitars don’t make you rock. Attitude makes you rock. Rebellion makes you rock. Run-DMC represents rock much better than a million Styx, Journeys, Rush(es), Asias, etc….They are the Kings of Rock/There are none higher……
Congrats gents, well deserved….

Jungleland2 | 3/20/2009, 5:38 pm EST

What is FUSE?

This should be on MTV or VH1. They moved it to VH1 classic last year and now FUSE?

I guess I’d better see if I have this station

Jungleland2 | 3/20/2009, 5:40 pm EST

ok, go to fuse dot com and select “channel finder” put in your zip code…they are 148 on my cable…who knew?

Mark | 3/20/2009, 5:47 pm EST

Let me clarify on the Rush thing. This is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I’m not asking people to like or hate Rush. Rush has been around since the 1970’s, released many albums, many hits, and are to this day played in heavy rotation on classic rock radio. Tom Sayer is a rock classic as are many of their songs. Just from a technical perspective, they should be in there. There absence reflects an agenda, and that leads me to look at the RRHOF as someone’s personal gallery as opposed to a “Hall of Fame”.

Jim | 3/20/2009, 5:56 pm EST

Comment sections all across the internet are weird. Nice to see Jeff Beck getting his due as a solo artist, though.

Anonymous | 3/20/2009, 7:26 pm EST

They probably moved it to Fuse b/c its the only ‘music television station’ that still plays a significant amount (not much, but still some) of MUSIC. (next to VH1 Classic, of course)

RipTide | 3/20/2009, 7:27 pm EST

People complaining about Rush not being inducted? How about Yes, Genesis and Peter Gabriel! Is Pete Townshend inducted as a solo artist? Jeff Buckley, Elliot Smith??? Madonna is in, yet Depeche Mode or Duran Duran are out…why?
Unbelievable!

nik | 3/20/2009, 7:42 pm EST

emienem? are you FUCKING kidding me?

Dude Man | 3/20/2009, 8:08 pm EST

This is my response to one HuskerDude. Lets get this straight, the music is what defines rock n roll. Rebellion does not matter. Just because you made a horrible song in which you call yourself the “King of Rock” doesn’t mean you made the music. You sir do not know anything about this music and neither does the hall of fame. The hall has inducted bubblegum and rap artists before real rock artists. This hall of shame has sold out so much forgetting so many great rock artists. It’s a true injustice is what this hall has done.

the rocker | 3/20/2009, 8:49 pm EST

Uh, people.

Eminem is NOT being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

(At least not anytime in the foreseeable future. You can’t be inducted until at least 25 years after your first single or album.)

Eminem is simply there to induct RUN DMC, who rightfully deserve to be there.

Steve | 3/21/2009, 1:51 am EST

I don’t see why rap artists are being inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame. I have no problem with rap, but there really should be a seperate hip-hop hall of fame or something.

Dicky | 3/21/2009, 2:42 am EST

Hip-hop/rap = rock ‘n’ roll

People who try to separate music based on it’s evolutionary stage, don’t understand music at all.

Rock101 | 3/21/2009, 7:30 am EST

yu guyz need to chill…. itl be a great event lookin forward to it
And as for Eminem being there hes simply welcoming Run-DMC and i dun see any problem with that
Dun bitch unless yur there:)

johnnycat | 3/21/2009, 9:24 am EST

No Moody Blues, no Jethro Tull,
no Yes….and many others.
That hall is a joke, I admire Van Morrison for not attending his “induction”.

Dude Man | 3/21/2009, 11:18 am EST

Sorry Dicky it’s the other way around. You don’t understand this music.

stupid "Da Bomb" | 3/21/2009, 12:46 pm EST

,,,,did you finish 2nd grade? You write like a ‘tard. Proof that hop-hop is nothing more than trash crap music for in-breds.

ummm | 3/21/2009, 5:37 pm EST

run-dmc is not a rock and roll act. they did not really influence rock and roll, except to help spawn rap rock, which is one of the worst things ever. walk this way was great, don’t get me wrong, but the world would have been a better place if bizkit and the like had never become popular.

ummm | 3/21/2009, 5:39 pm EST

there’s nothing wrong with hip-hop… it’s just that it’s not rock and roll. it rock and roll is about attitude, then we may as well induct evel knievel, jenna jameson, and steve mcqueen, they had plenty of attitude.

ummm | 3/21/2009, 5:43 pm EST

This shouldn’t be that hard: How many songs do you have in rock band? how old are they? If the answers are 1. a lot and 2. very, then you get in. Otherwise, people don’t care about you anymore, or you’re too current for your long term quality to be judged. I would exclude acts before 1965 from this test, because of course they won’t be in rock band, and it’s easy enough to tell their influence.

flank | 3/21/2009, 5:55 pm EST

Why are people disparaging Ron Wood’s lead guitar abilities?
He did a fine job with Faces and Rod Stewart. He also plays a lot of lead with the Stones and outshines Keith half the time.

Kevin Ricche | 3/21/2009, 8:10 pm EST

I agree with Avacado; too funny!

Ken Vail | 3/21/2009, 10:41 pm EST

there’s always a few choices i disagree with, but the ceremony is usually fun…next year let’s have cheap trick, kiss, thin lizzy, rush and j. geils band inducted!

Bedrocker7 | 3/22/2009, 12:05 am EST

This is the thing- opinions and tastes aside…if it’s not in the GENRE, then why is it in the ROCK & ROLL HALL of FAME? In other words, why are ROCK bands- whether progressive, punk or synthesized- at this point of qualification, that are indeed well qualified by the Hall’s standards (influence, sales, etc…) being passed up for artists who could never be mistaken for ‘Rock and Roll’- even by some elderly citizens today? If it’s about comprimising the real deal Rock acts (substance) over style and selling out to stay press worthy, this amounts to putting MacGuire/Canseco/Clemmens in the Baseball HOF. There needs to be a revolt, on a major scale, that blows up their spot about the voting process if this Rock HOF is to continue w/o mockery.

weegie | 3/22/2009, 1:04 am EST

The hall is for “Popular Music” as it has been defined for 50 years, i.e. anything that influenced Rock and Roll and lead to its birth, or off-shoots of R & R. Country, blues, R & B, rap. Basically anything post 1920 not including jazz. If the Hall was strictly “Rock and Roll” Hank Williams, Otis Redding, Robert Johnson, James Brown, et al wouldn’t be in it, which of course would be ludicrous. Run DMC deserve to be in. As did the Beasty Boys. The induction process has been tough, it has high standards, not unlike the Baseball Hall of Fame, you REALLY have to deserve to be in it. Everyone will disagree with some of the picks, James Taylor and Madonna being in make me wince, but I approve of 98 % of the inductees. And as always, art rock bands like Rush, YES, Genesis……….good God people ! Art rock was a pimple on the ass of rock and roll, the nadir of excess, drum solos, pretentious lyrics….. The punks had to come along and crush them and take back rock and roll to it’s 3 chord origins, thank God ! Rush attracts white people with questionable taste in music like like flies to sherbet. It’s laughable how tin-eared mooks flock to that truly awful band. ;)

CR1ZZ | 3/22/2009, 4:56 am EST

No fucking way is Run-DMC a rock act, neither is Eminem. Does anyone know if the Foo Fighters are either already inducted or soon to be eligeable?

Bedrocker7 | 3/22/2009, 8:09 am EST

OK Weegie, fair enough. Part one of your essay; Everything=Rock and Roll. Part two, Rush sucks. Gotcha.

No HH in HOF | 3/22/2009, 10:29 am EST

Eminem is a geek!

When is the RocknRoll HOF going to change it’s name? There are more and more non RocknRoll people added every year.

idiomiedo | 3/22/2009, 10:53 am EST

Where is mp3 in New York?

Dude Man | 3/22/2009, 11:05 am EST

Sorry CR1ZZ, Foo Fighters will not be eligeable until the year 2020. It takes 25 years after your first album to be eligeable. I Hope they get in when the time comes.

artrock | 3/22/2009, 12:02 pm EST

dude weegie art rock rocks! ok maybe genesis and rush are a bit boring to ppl used to rock&roll, but they’re a lot more talented than punks. i think it takes a lot more effort to sit down and write prog songs than it does to write punk. i mean, look at all the shitty punk/emo bands out there today? do you see any shitty prog bands? no. that’s bcus prog rock requires skill to make, and punk, no offense to the good punk bands out there, can be made by nearly anybody with some eyeliner.
and btw, if u take out art rock, then bands like pink floyd and mars volta and mastodon wont count. wtf man. pink floyd for sure is more rock than like country or somthing.

artrock | 3/22/2009, 12:03 pm EST

oh and btw, i did some research on wikipedia and there actually is a genre called art punk. beat that.

dag | 3/22/2009, 5:08 pm EST

CR1ZZ. I believe the criteria for entering the Rock Hall include being making music for 25 years or more. So the Foo Fighters have quite a way to go.

DrZ | 3/22/2009, 8:28 pm EST

We might as well accept the fact that the RRHOF is an utter joke controled by up-side down thinking morons. If you think it’s bad now, give it time, it will get MUCH worse. For example, Ratt will never be considered for the hall, but you can bet your ASS Bon Jovi will get in. Ratt was Led Zeppelin compared to Bon Jovi.

tru predator | 3/22/2009, 8:43 pm EST

what an idiot.if rap rock sucked so bad and was a bad idea then why did so many of them sell so many records?maybe because it wasnt such a bad idea.proof of that is the massive relief people felt when one of the best acts in the genre (rage against the machine)reunited for some shows.the only bad thing it spawned was too many rap rock acts came out and the genre died of over saturation.

Josh | 3/22/2009, 8:59 pm EST

Ratt wasn’t Led Zeppelin compared to ANYBODY. They’re RATT.

333 | 3/22/2009, 9:17 pm EST

I really hope The Stooges get inducted into the RRHOF soon. Ron has already passed away, and I really feel that they should be inducted soon so the remaining Stooges can live to receive the acknowledgment they deserve for inspiring countless other musicians throughout history. Many R&R inductees cite The Stooges as inspiration… I just feel like they belong with the greats.

CR1ZZ | 3/22/2009, 10:33 pm EST

Thanks dude man.

BonScott | 3/22/2009, 10:42 pm EST

i’m sure they could have found someone better than eminem to induct run-dmc. maybe chuck d? i’d even prefer if kid rock inducted them in, it would be his 50th time inducting someone tho

Ben | 3/22/2009, 11:07 pm EST

I am a rocker through and through G NR are my gods and the best ever,

Brien Comerford | 3/23/2009, 10:24 am EST

Jimmy Page inducting Jeff Beck is very apropos. Arguably the two greatest guitarists ever.

Hole | 3/23/2009, 11:07 am EST

DRZ…you are the biggest loser. Ratt sucked and didn’t do shit except play to the same stupid fans that wanted to hear there setlist of shit songs…don’t compare them to Zeppelin….dude…you are a fucking retard

Jungleland2 | 3/23/2009, 11:26 am EST

This is gonna get ugly

Here’s my take

RUN DMC are f*ing amazing, they should be in.
RUSH,Alice Cooper, ELO, Cheap Trick, KISS, Hall & Oates, Stooges, Dire Straits, The Cars, Yes, DEVO, XTC, Peter Gabriel all need to be in too…

Heart, Forigner, Journey, Boston, Bon Jovi, Brian Adams, Genesis, Bad Company are all going to get passed over, not because they didn’t sell tons of records, but because they didn’t revolutionize or create a genre

Anonymous | 3/23/2009, 11:33 am EST

RHCP and The Stooges for 2010!

Thundercrotch | 3/23/2009, 1:36 pm EST

1910 Fruitgum Company
Starland Vocal Band
Eddie Murphy (For “Party All the Time”)
Terance and Phillip ( for “Shut Your F****n Face Uncle F*****)

Those are my picks for the next RRHOF batch. Read ‘em and weep be-otches!

Youth | 3/23/2009, 4:19 pm EST

Hello what about kiss and alice cooper, this whole thing is a scam rap needs to have their own category because they killed rock n roll. Im one of the very very few of the youth who still carry on the torch of ROCK! This rap shit needs to die!!!!!

kiljoy | 3/23/2009, 5:22 pm EST

beastie boys should be in there no matter if you agree or disagree on the rap/rock issue. they do both great and have influenced a lot of artists.

Hole…Can you read? I said Bon Jovi made Ratt look like Led Zeppelin in comparison.I get a feeling you were too young to know any better, but Ratt between ‘83 and ‘85 were incredible. FACT. If you really think Bon Jovi at any time whatsoever was even remotely as good as Ratt, you are TRULY a 100% dipshit.

Jake | 3/23/2009, 11:16 pm EST

This whole Bon Jovi-Ratt banter is silly. I do have to admit what drz said is true because I saw it first hand.I hated that whole hair metal genre, and my older brother dragged me to see Bon Jovi open for Ratt I think in ‘85 or ‘86. Ratt DESTROYED Bon Jovi. The Tyson-Lewis fight a few years ago is a good comparison. If that draws a blank, imagine Godzilla stomping a Pepsi can.

Ratt | 3/23/2009, 11:37 pm EST

ROUND AND ROUND!! FUCK YESS! RATT OWNS ALL THAT BON JOVI BULLSHIT!

Absolut | 3/24/2009, 2:07 pm EST

Wow, I never thought I see such a large group of people who actually “care” that it’s the whole “rock and roll” thing is so important.
It does tick me off that bands like Rush and Yes haven’t gotten in, but that should only mean that the ones that do get in are that much better. You have to be more than successful. Run, Metallica, Beck have all had whole musical revolutions evolve around them. The 70’s rock, the 90’s rap/rock (it’s STILL rock) and the American 80’s hard rock and metal.
Give these guys some credit, they did it better than just about everyone. Beck is WORLDS better than paige…to spark some debate :)

Balloon! | 3/24/2009, 3:19 pm EST

Half of the lead vocalists in Opera and in Rock and in Hip Hop and in Crunge and in Soul and in Contemporary and in Blues R&B were drinking a substance called “Oxy2″, nitrous oxide and helium, created by the animation needs of MGM who pioneered the cocktail for itself around Bugs Bunny. That’s the history of Oxy2, and the substance gives the vocalist the ability to arpeggiate aka Opera “figero’s” up and down 6 octaves. Cross dressers also drink Oxy2 to maintain a high voice in addition to pusshing the adams apple in, also Cabaret and Kareoke attract these people, so no wonder certain bands are not inducted if this is detected. What people want is a performance 4-octave voice, not a bunch of helium that creates a wild high voice that will never be repeated again. If you listen to some of the above suggestions lead vocal work, you’ll hear the wild vibrato that sounds like an atomic sheep baa’ing away. The fluid over years of usage will also swell the tissue around the face and head, also the body, which explains those one of a kind voices and all of the cosmetic adjustments they have to make to appear in public, and also explains sudden weight gain just a year or two later, they simply have a massive tissue emulsion of hybrid helium and it makes the cells multiply. They either suck it from a straw with a hidden pouch in their stage outfit, from the mic believe it or not with a concentrated version, or blatantly from a cup that sits in front of the drummer that they walk back to as if they’re preparing for a big moment. Plant was NOT a helium singer, simply could throw his voice up to high notes when he was young with a falsetto and a loud mic, the lead singer for Boston was a helium singer, and nobody, not even his competition, Steve Perry from Journey, could hit some of those “look a head” high notes that were full voiced. We hope the Hall of Fame knows who’s who, it’s been around is what they say and they go by album sales but will not honor one vocalist over another because of the controversy it creates if they are on record for being busted by their label, their inside, or a studio for using this performance enhancer. Now everyone suck helium from a baloon and redo their voice mail messages!

Imp | 3/24/2009, 6:53 pm EST

Sheesh… Write a book already.

SoundPusher | 4/2/2009, 4:12 am EST

Listen up dummies…I learned about 15 years ago that the RRHOF would never just honor rock bands or what people consider a “rock” band is. Many of you don’t know of what you speak so you say stupid stuff. Rap is Pop music’s heavy metal! Just like BB KIng and Elvis Inspired the many bands that came after them. Basically, the greats of the great who Rocked(played or wrote music that in some way taught or rebelled)is considered RNR. A guitar alone does not make arock band. Metallica’s Induction shouldn’t bother anyone other than a stupid person who does not accept or appreciate greatness!! They’ve never stopped!! 28 years later and still sell out concerts and record, most of all they have made some amazing music!
