VH1 to Bring Back “Behind The Music” with Lil Wayne, Scott Weiland and Others

3/19/09, 12:48 pm EST

VH1 will resurrect a former staple in the network’s programming, Behind the Music, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The network has ordered at least 10 more episodes of the long-running series, with Lil Wayne and Scott Weiland already signed on for their own specials. Other artists involved and potential air dates were not yet revealed. By documenting the bizarre careers of Milli Vanilli and MC Hammer, BTM  was an instant hit and a stalwart on the schedule from 1997 to 2002. In recent years, VH1 has trucked out special episodes to tie in to other programming or exclusive content, most recently in September 2008, when New Kids on the Block tied in their first reunion performance with a 90-minute BTM.

The network also aired a 30-minute version of the series called BTM2 that focused on then-newer talent such as Smash Mouth and Paula Cole, but that was short-lived. VH1 will also reemploy Jim Forbes, whose distinct voice narrated the entire the original series except for the first two episodes. Forbes’ voice lent a tone of gravitas to the sad tales of BTM subjects ranging from Leif Garrett to REO Speedwagon.

So we ask the question to our Rock Daily readers: Who should get the Behind the Music treatment? Tupac Shakur instantly comes to mind, and while Guns n’ Roses already had an episode in the original series, they’re more than due for an updated version. (Wikipedia has the whole list of episodes.) Nirvana, the Libertines and, most recently, Chris Brown should also get their due. Leave your picks in the comments and we’ll be sure to forward them over to the VH1 programming department.

Jane’s Addiction. And they should get a special 90 minutes b/c you need at least that much time to get through all their stuff.

The Allman Brothers, Joy Division,NIN and Fela Kuti would all be aweome, as well.

Christopher Combs | 3/19/2009, 1:07 pm EST

The White Stripes, The Killers, Tesla, Elvis Costello, Pavement

Jason | 3/19/2009, 1:07 pm EST

2 that came to mind right away were KISS and The Smashing Pumpkins.

Jason | 3/19/2009, 1:10 pm EST

Nevermind on KISS…I just remembered that they had one back in 2001.

Bascomb | 3/19/2009, 1:11 pm EST

How come they don’t replay all their old ones? The only runs they replay are the newer episodes (Ratt, Pantera). I swear to you the Styx “Behind the Music” is the “I Claudius” of Behind the Musics. It’s a freakin’ classic!

Jason | 3/19/2009, 1:12 pm EST

Van Halen is one that should definitely get consideration… especially if they decide to release a new album.

Wil | 3/19/2009, 1:12 pm EST

Chris Cornell and his affiliations is due for sure…

Elliott Smith fits the MO unfortunately

Did the Pixies and their affiliated projects ever get one?

Ryan Adams is a no brainer…

Juliana Hatfield writing a biography of sorts makes here a good candidate

Lauryn Hill & Bjork makes sense too.

Adam | 3/19/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Scott Weiland, that’s awesome, can’t wait for that episode! I agree with Erin, JANE’S ADDICTION!!!

Great! However, if they bring back Pop-Up Video I’ll be REALLY happy. :)

Aaron | 3/19/2009, 2:48 pm EST

Finally, VH1 has music on their channel. I’m not a fan of either of the two people mentioned. I hope they can show older episodes also. I only watch VH1 Classic because it has music. I’ll have to think on who they should do an episode on. They have to bring this back because this is one of the view visual resources writers like me are going to get with most bands.

Schultz | 3/19/2009, 3:04 pm EST

Pop up video is on VH1 Classic and is as annoying as it ever was…

Arlington, VA | 3/19/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Behind the Music used to be kind of a nice contrast to The Music. But now that they do not play/show any music, who cares what’s behind it? How many VH1 viewers can hum a little wayne tune?

Jay | 3/19/2009, 3:19 pm EST

First of all a big THANK YOU to “David” for asking for the Kevin Gilbert BTM. There would be no Sheryl Crow if not for KG.
Second, PLEASE replay the original BTM! I miss this show and it was so informative. This is MUCH better than the crap being broadcast on VH1 now. I only watch VH1 Classic now. Bring the originals back VH1 !

Chloe | 3/19/2009, 7:33 pm EST

No Pete Townshend or David Bowie? Blasphemy!

Shawn | 3/19/2009, 7:44 pm EST

Rolling Stones, Prince (good luck with that), Cheap Trick, Doobie Brothers, the Pretenders

Elvis Fischer | 3/19/2009, 7:44 pm EST

Yeah, Guns N Roses could definetly need and update. Van Halen would be cool too.

LL | 3/19/2009, 8:00 pm EST

Please give some long overdue recognition to one of the late, great, unknowns – Kevin Gilbert. Kevin is best known for his membership in the Tuesday Night Music Club, however, his own phenomenal work has never gotten the credit and play time that it deserves.

Rabbitbunny | 3/19/2009, 8:11 pm EST

Only the ones with a happy ending, please! AC/DC, The Black Crowes,

I will second and third the suggestion of Kevin Gilbert. Without Kevin, Sheryl Crow would have never had that first album (most of which Kevin wrote). He was an amazing talent and many people have unfortunately never even heard of him.

Garth Brooks, Foo Fighters, White Stripes/Jack White

sorry, but whoever keeps reposting ‘Kevin Gilbert’, under various pseudonyms…. get over it!

They are not going to do a special about a mostly obscure songwriter the average American has never even heard of.

Behind The Music wants to showcase artists that people actually CARE about…. hence a ratings system… hence advertising dollars… hence the only reason television even exists.

Aaron | 3/19/2009, 10:05 pm EST

Kevin Gilbert.

He’s Kurt Cobain, Joe Meek and Batman rolled into one. :)

Anonymous | 3/19/2009, 10:20 pm EST

Like they did with the last days of John Lennon, how about the last days of Elvis? Also like to see the Moody Blues, who’ve had about 5 lives and should have been in the R&R Hall of Crap (I mean Fame) about 15 years ago.

bonasound | 3/19/2009, 10:21 pm EST

Kevin Gilbert –
never mind the work he did to kick start Sheryl Crow’s career or co-produced/engineered tracks for Madonna and Michael Jackson, or recorded the incredible “Toy Matinee” with Patrick Leonard, or the songs he wrote that were covered by Tina Turner and Joe Cocker or the movie soundtracks he is credited for….Kevin Gilbert also produced his own masterpieces “Thud” and “Shaming of the True” along with many other released & unreleased tracks of brilliant songwriting and true artistry.

bonasound | 3/19/2009, 10:22 pm EST

Kevin Gilbert for sure!

GNR for sure, Ray LaMontagne, Mother Love Bone/Temple Of The Dog, and Elliot Smith.

Keyman40 | 3/20/2009, 12:35 am EST

please, please , please….
Do an episode or two on Kevin Gilbert. ?He was an incredible talent that left us way too soon. His talent and music are classic independent rock! Not only did he do work for other great names in the music biz, but he wrote soundtracks, engineered, played back up for many artists, wrote commercial promo spots under an assumed name…you name it, he probably did it. One listen to Toy Matinee and you will be hooked!

Etro | 3/20/2009, 1:17 am EST

Definitely GNR could use some revamping. The drama of Evanescence would be perfect for the show. Led Zeppelin would be AWESOME too!!! No Doubt would be great as well they’ll have a new album out by next year, so it would be perfect if BTM covers them for that event. I just hope they don’t cover the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift, they’re boring as hell.

Behind the music has a formula:

band starts from nothing and struggles. band hits it big. all the money brings drugs and women. band hits it BIGGER. drugs destroy members of the band, someone dies, someone leaves the band. Band continues on a rocky road. Band breaks up.

Band reforms, with members missing and look toward the future, sober and ready to rock.

I agree that an episode on Kevin Gilbert would be incredibly riveting. His story is so interesting that it would also make a great film. His album “The Shaming of the True” is one of the greatest rock operas ever written and the story it tells is more than just a little bit autobiographical. This man was a musical genius and could do literally everything in the process of making and creating music. The long list of well-known names associated with him is incredible. Just because he is not a well-known name himself does not make him uninteresting. Many in the music world are very familiar with his name and work. A BTM on Kevin Gilbert would hit all the highs and lows that they look for in a subject and has the tragic ending that draws ratings.

Fenner | 3/21/2009, 2:09 am EST

Agreed. Kevin Gilbert needs a BTM and WAY more recognition for all that he did in front of, and behind the mic.

chris | 3/21/2009, 2:47 am EST

Alice in Chains, Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith–all great stories, but par usual, BTM would just focus on the addictions and such, but those would be fascinating stories nonetheless.

Aaron | 3/21/2009, 2:57 am EST

Anonymous 9:21 : congratulations. You are part of the reason why American television is so dumb.

TJinSA | 3/21/2009, 11:00 am EST

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN!!!!

Mark G | 3/21/2009, 12:05 pm EST

I will second the Kevin Gilbert suggestion – while he’s not as well known (by name) to many, his story is interesting, tragic, and has connections with so many “popular” artists that the show could be very interesting even to those who don’t know that they are fans of his music.

tomtracks | 3/21/2009, 3:41 pm EST

Talk about joy of music, and he did make it to “conventional fame” as part of the Tues Night Music Club: Kevin Gilbert. The music world is under-informed about this late genius.

Anonymous | 3/22/2009, 11:50 am EST

Kevin Gilbert in a BTM story would fascinate many for sure! His story is a great one. RIP Kevin.

An updated Beck episode would be really cool.
Rage Against The Machine?
Tool perhaps?
How about Miles Davis?
Lou Reed and Velvet Underground should get one for sure.
Velvet Revolver maybe, let’s wait and see what happens with their singer first.
Alice In Chains.

Loretta Lynn,
D.j. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince,
The White Stripes,
Hank Williams family Sr., Jr. and III.

J Richter | 8/31/2009, 11:52 pm EST

Wow, very nice seeing all the love here for Kevin Gilbert. I also suggest the same BTM treatment for him. His story is so tragic, it begs for a show like this. His reach in popular culture/music really does go much further than many realize. It’d be nice to see him with some posthumous acknowledgement for his musical contributions.

Misfits would be asome. Going from the early days with Danzig to the break up, Jerry Only’s solo project Kryst the Conqueror, The Misfits reformation with Michale Graves on vocals, and the current lineup with Jerry Only on vocals after the fight with Doyle.
