The Nasty Thrill of “Gossip Girl”: On the Set of TV’s Hottest Show in Rolling Stone

3/18/09, 5:30 am EST

Video: Pete Maiden

It’s been a heart-wrenching month for fans of the CW Network’s sexily subversive drama Gossip Girl while TV’s hottest show took a brief hiatus. But now Blair, Serena, Chuck Bass and Co. are back — and on the cover of the new issue of Rolling Stone. To get the dirt on what it’s like starring as beautiful young people in New York while being beautiful young people in New York, Jason Gay hung out with the cast on set and after hours, tagging along to their favorite drinking haunts — where the beverage of choice is the potent Golden Monkey — and catching the action as the show filmed on the streets of the Big Apple. (Get up close and personal with the crew for yourself with our exclusive footage from Terry Richardson’s steamy shoot, above, plus exclusive photos from the session.)

“The outdoor sets were pretty fun, because the fans come out,” Gay says. “There were many kids from local private schools, foreign tourists and tons of paparazzi. It’s very strange to see a mob of paparazzi photograph Blake and Leighton in character as they film an outdoor scene. It’s as if the reality of the show exists behind two lenses — in real time and TV time. All the actors enjoy the outside stuff because of the fans, too. It’s like playing on stage or something. More energy, more excitement and the sense that anything could happen. And sometimes it does. There is no such thing as a closed set in NYC!”

Despite barely scraping together 3 million viewers a week, the show has become the most talked-about, culturally relevant series on television. “It’s not a conventional TV hit in terms of viewership. Its numbers are low and it loses to stuff like The Secret Life of the American Teenager, a far more wholesome show that runs on cable,” Gay says. “But in terms of having a ‘moment,’ however you want to define it, GG definitely is having one. It will be very interesting to see if the show grows, or remains a clubby, small hit. Teen shows seldom have long runs — and I don’t get the feeling this will turn into ER. But it seems to be here to stay as long as the principals involved want to keep doing it.”

Part of the show’s appeal is its authenticity. “The show is sharp and connected to modern life, references, music and so on. Gossip Girl doesn’t feel like something that got drummed up in some network focus group by 55-year-old white dudes,” Gay explains. “No one’s going to accuse Gossip Girl of being The Wire or Mad Men, but if you roll with the fantasy/absurdity, it’s fun to watch, from the infighting to the insane clothes and snappy dialogue.”

Right now, the stars who bring those tart lines to life — Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Ed Westwick, Chace Crawford, Penn Badgley — somehow haven’t let fame go to their heads, according to Gay. “They’ve all reached the point where they’re in the public eye, but they’re not rolling around in blacked-out SUVs or being chased around like Madonna. A lot of them take the subway and they still complain about the price of rents and monthly car parking,” Gay reveals. “They’re in a nice place in their careers. They’re now recognizable enough to get interest for other things, but not so recognizable that daily life is a drag.”

Though he’s now a Gossip guru, Gay admits, “I didn’t jump on the bandwagon immediately. But by the end of the first season, I was getting so annoyed with the fuss I had to check it out.” So what’s his favorite Gossip Girl moment? “The scene in the ‘Non-Judging Breakfast Club’ episode where Blair, Chuck and Nate rally behind Serena after she confesses about her wild night with Georgina. Nate and Blair then confess regrettable things they’ve done, and when Blair asks Chuck to contribute, he just says, ‘I’m Chuck Bass,’ ” Gay says. “It’s the kind of thing that if you watched the show for the first time, it would mean nothing to do you, but if you’re a fan, you’re dying. I think that’s one of the shrewder things about Gossip Girl — it does reward its loyal viewers.”

Well, its official.

Rolling Stone is now complete and utter trash. I’ll be renewing my subscription for Spin, thank you very much.

Brian | 3/18/2009, 11:41 am EST

Does Rolling Stone only own white backgrounds? Every cover is a person and/or people in front of a white background. I mean, I know the economy blows, but where’s the change up?

Brian | 3/18/2009, 11:42 am EST

Raised,

What do you mean by “is now”? :-)

Brian | 3/18/2009, 12:02 pm EST

I enjoy when you wonder aloud if RS only owns white backgrounds for their cover shots, they delete the comment. Legit constructive criticism? Not here!

Brian | 3/18/2009, 12:04 pm EST

Never mind. It’s back

Joe | 3/18/2009, 2:56 pm EST

Garbage

Boner | 3/18/2009, 2:58 pm EST

Greatest Cover Ever.

Grogg | 3/18/2009, 3:00 pm EST

I remember when Rolling Stone announced Teenage Fanclub as this GREATEST Band in the World, and I thought, at the time, Rolling Stone couldn’t go any lower. I give them credit though, they’ve consistently sunk lower and lower but this REALLY has to be the worst, right? I mean, maybe a summit between Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton on the economy and environment might outdo it… but I doubt it.

me | 3/18/2009, 3:09 pm EST

awesome

Disappointed | 3/18/2009, 3:15 pm EST

Well…I get a subscription each year for my rock and music news…now I have to deal with Rolling Stone doing (Cover!)stories on Gossip Girl and the Hills…I’ll even throw in the lame a$$ Jonas Brothers cover while I’m at it…I realize I’m getting older and losing a bit of “touch” with the latest “in” things, but I thought Rolling Stone would be an ESCAPE from this teeny-bopper crap…guess I will finally let my subscripetion run it’s course this time…shame…

Ray | 3/18/2009, 3:30 pm EST

who cares if its only white background?? they always take great snaps anyways…

CR1ZZ | 3/18/2009, 4:12 pm EST

This is bullshit! I don’t know ONE person who watches this show! It’s bad acting with a bad story just like every other teenage soap!
Put Fleetwood on the cover, it might regain my faith in RS.

SB | 3/18/2009, 5:46 pm EST

I think this show is great – not to be taken to seriously, but it’s definitely entertaining television. People need to stop complaining that it’s on the cover. Watch 5 minutes of MTV, and then you’ll think twice about calling GG trash :)

koko | 3/18/2009, 6:02 pm EST

WOW, i feel so disgusted!

renne | 3/18/2009, 6:05 pm EST

This show is entarening but trashy as fuck… i really dont like them on cover and i am disappointed!

I choose MTV rather watch gossip girl! sorry…

“the show has become the most talked-about, culturally relevant series on television.”

By WHO? The E! channel?!?

and we wonder | 3/18/2009, 6:35 pm EST

And everyone wonders why we have so many teenage sluts running around giving out STD’s like it is Christmas….
sheesh!

kelsey | 3/18/2009, 7:02 pm EST

I am 14 years old, not a whore and I love gossip girl. All my friends love it too. We will never be sluts because the tv show i like doesn’t define me. If it did I would have no life like some of you.

Nick the Great | 3/18/2009, 7:56 pm EST

I zoned out after you called Gossip Girl the most culturally relevant show on television. Hyperbole much?

gossipgirlfanatic09 | 3/18/2009, 8:03 pm EST

Please people..who give a f*ck if you don’t watch. MTV died a LONG time ago. It’s a such a awsome “guilty” pleasure to watch every Monday night. I’ll be getting my copy ASAP!

FunkyMF | 3/18/2009, 8:13 pm EST

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Fuck this teen disney shit! Enough already!

Kang | 3/18/2009, 10:30 pm EST

Hunter s Thompson just spun in his grave.

Anonymous | 3/18/2009, 10:39 pm EST

Whatever, Someone got payed to put these CULTURALY IRRELEVENT chicks on the cover.

I usually know something about the people on the cover but, shit.

Hell, they could have put Tyra on the cover.

Rollingstone just lost come credibility

katebozz | 3/18/2009, 10:41 pm EST

Somebody got paid to put these CULTURALLY IR-RELAVANT chicks on the cover

Dude Man | 3/18/2009, 11:05 pm EST

Excuse me, but isn’t this a music magizine. Why do the editors and writers keep writing stories about politics, pop culture, and in this case terrible television shows?

HATERS | 3/18/2009, 11:06 pm EST

Fuck you if you say gossip girl is trashy. If you are a girl you’re just jealous that they are hot and you are not and if you’re a guy you’re jealous you could never come close to bangin them. I love theses girls and the show. If you want to talk about sluts that shouldn’t be on the cover try britany spears or hedi whatever the fuck her name is. While we are on the subject there definitely needs to be more females on the cover.

P.S. you are a complete moron if you watch MTV shows. they are all fake and without a doubt inferior.

Anonymous | 3/18/2009, 11:22 pm EST

i’m too disappointed to write anything spiteful
it’s just too embarrassing to acknowledge any further

Poopy Pants | 3/18/2009, 11:38 pm EST

Okay that’s it! I’m canceling my subscription to Rolling Stone because of this stupid cover story! Wait a minute… I don’t have a subscription to RS. You know what? I’m gonna subscribe to RS then cancel in a couple of weeks just to piss off the customer service reps over there! That’ll teach ya for putting trash on the cover!

auramac | 3/19/2009, 1:50 am EST

They look like all the other Facebook bimbos who pose lesbian-like and narcissistically in front of a camera. The Hannah Montanas of the world. Good work, Rolling Stone. So dumbed-down is the New Hip, huh?
How inspiring!

geez | 3/19/2009, 2:16 am EST

ha. man i get it. is this the april fools edition of RS?

NO?

what the fuck man.

rubbish | 3/19/2009, 2:18 am EST

i might save the planet from one less roll of toilet paper and just wipe my ass with this shitty cover

thanks guys

R.T | 3/19/2009, 2:30 am EST

next issue: Miley Cyrus on the cover

Pedaphile | 3/19/2009, 2:35 am EST

I would totally let both of those females go down on me at the same time, but c’mon RS…don’t turn into the MTV of magazines…eww!

Tommy Boy | 3/19/2009, 2:46 am EST

R.T I lost my virginity to your daughter for cryin’ out loud! Rob, you were there!

but yes, i do agree with R.T on this one.

CR1ZZ | 3/19/2009, 4:26 am EST

I thought that Cyrus girl had already been on the cover.
And yeah I’m a f#!king 14-year-old guy I would shag them anyday but they are un-realistic.
Any I totally agree about phish, and MTV, MTV is f#!ked beyond recognision now. It was cool in the 80’s with Dire Straits and Def Leppard but now it is sad.

moi | 3/19/2009, 4:35 am EST

hey i like gossip girl but im nit really into the cover of this issue

bigdrewsmoove | 3/19/2009, 8:56 am EST

I like the comment about Hunter Thompson rolling over in his grave. We didn’t have this kind of shit on the cover when he was alive. Maybe they were afraid of the tongue lashing they would have got from him. Now that he is dead, we get the Jonas Brothers and Gossip Girl. I was thinking of starting to subscribe to your magazine again, thanks for making up my mind for me.

raisedlefteyebrow | 3/19/2009, 11:09 am EST

What is happenenig to the world? I mean seriously, what the fuck is this? Gossip Girl. Are you fucking serious? Rolling Stone has been in decline for a while now but this is just about as much as I can take. Its not just music that’s sucking, its all of fucking pop culture. TV, Movies, books, it all fucking sucks now. I’m 15 and I’ll be damned if I have to put up with this fashion conscious, MTV watching, reality show, hip hop, mall punk shit for the rest of my life.

It’s time to learn three chords and start a band again everyone.

yummy | 3/19/2009, 11:11 am EST

I’m gonna subscribe NOW! Best cover EVER!

new subscriber | 3/19/2009, 11:44 am EST

1) Hunter Thompson was cremated and shot out of a cannon and therefore has no grave in which to spin.
2) If you’re a 14-year-old girl defending this show, you don’t get it. H*ll, I don’t get it. This magazine is supposed to be bigger than this. It’s supposed to bring to light the underdog performers who change our view of music. It’s supposed to open our eyes to the intricacies of putting together music in all of its forms and challenging our predispositions. It’s supposed to be about the music, the writing, the art of rock, roll and everything in between. It’s not supposed to be about hot girls on TV and the conversation we’re having is not supposed to be about whether or not we are jelous or want to bang them. MTV and RS are apples and oranges. We expect more from RS for a reason.

BG | 3/19/2009, 11:55 am EST

Well said, New Subscriber! That’s it! Thank you.

Blake | 3/19/2009, 12:32 pm EST

Whats the name of the song/band that is playing in the vid?

WTF? | 3/19/2009, 2:28 pm EST

“the show has become the most talked-about, culturally relevant series on television.”

Gossip Girl is about as culturally relevant as my dog taking a shit.

Idiots | 3/19/2009, 2:34 pm EST

“Fuck you if you say gossip girl is trashy.

P.S. you are a complete moron if you watch MTV shows. they are all fake and without a doubt inferior.”

First off, anyone who watches either MTV or Gossip Girl is a complete and utter tool.

Gossip Girl presents the image of women being half brained and completely obseesed with guys, shopping, and inane fashion, as does pop culture as a whole. What’s worse is that a bunch of wrinkly old guys are making millions of dollars off of dumbing down female teens.

This cover features two girls sexily licking an ice cream.

I’m a guy, so I may be out of place here but whatever happened to self-respect?

GodSendDeath | 3/19/2009, 3:45 pm EST

Good God – what in the FUCK is wrong with people? When you make the Kardashian clan look like card carrying Mensa members, you’ve succesfully reached an all-time high in the “Go Suck A Shotgun” sweepstakes.

I like to yank my crank as much as the next guy, but these chicks look like they couldn’t keep a sandwhich down, much less a dude’s junk.

If only Hunter would have taken a moment after the lock and load to see that he was in essence removing one of the saving graces of this planet (himself, that is)…He could of done us a bigger favor on turning the gun on these broads and their fan base.

BOOSH.

notgettinganyofthenegativity | 3/19/2009, 3:57 pm EST

I am not ashamed to admit that I’m a fan of Gossip Girl and I find it interesting (and sad) that so many of you here have chosen to take it upon yourselves to act as intellectual bastards by generalizing the Gossip Girl audience as shallow and/or douchebaggy. It literally makes me physically ill reading these comments on how anyone who watches this show or MTV is a “tool”, as if the person who wrote it is the tastemaker of the moment. I for one thank Rolling Stone for this cover story, and I hope to read it soon.

Azaleh | 3/19/2009, 4:19 pm EST

The only credible thing about GG is the Chuck/Blair relationship. Beyond that, the acting is horrible, the plot lines are ridiculous. I’m 20. I watch for CB, but nothing more. This cover is so tasteless. It’s changed how I view Leigh and Blake…this isn’t sexy, it’s SLUTTY. RS, why?? Thumbs down. Oh, and why are Jessica and Taylor included? They’re not relevant.

cRAIG | 3/19/2009, 4:51 pm EST

i’m a big fan of old 90210 and Melrose Place: brilliant trash. but Gossip Girl is overrated, and even boring at times. that last episode stunk…

Lay off | 3/19/2009, 5:04 pm EST

Seriously, it’s a television show. I read these responses from these children. No offence, but I’m almost ten years older than some of you, a guy, and I think that show is hilarious. I rarely read this stuff, because it is just pop culture. This publication is about pop culture and music. They do good work. Take it for what it is, it’s not that serious. Obviously, the show is that relavant if it can create so much noise on a blog. Mostly not because of how crappy the show is but because they wrote about it and used them on the cover. Take it easy. Give the show a chance. How can you not find humor in some ficticious character constantly reminding you who he is when he is only seventeen. Chuck bass drinks scotch in bars at seventeen! There is not much realistic to that, so have fun with it. And all the students within that area subscribe to GG, really. That shit is hilarious. Just realize how fake that show is and it is really funny.

Haters=CRAP | 3/19/2009, 5:06 pm EST

If you don’t LOVE this cover you are old or worthless.Maybe old AND worthless?

YESonEIGHT | 3/19/2009, 5:07 pm EST

I voted YES ON 8 but I’ll make an exception for these babes!

rnbstylaking | 3/19/2009, 5:15 pm EST

The cover is hott I love it

Gossip Girl is the biggest show ever

for boys and girls”!!!

ChemNerd | 3/19/2009, 6:12 pm EST

I applaud Rolling Stone-Gossip Girl has been and continues to be a huge impact the fashion scene and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I am in my mid-twenties (so it isn’t just teens watching) and I love watching this show and it doesn’t hurt that it has some major eye-candy. To the person whom said that Gossip Girl fans are “tools” that is hilarious because I for one am not emulating any of the characters on the show and I certainly am not an idiot…so sorry to prove that “fact” WRONG

NerdyHannah | 3/19/2009, 6:27 pm EST

I love this show. I am within the range of potential viewers, at least I consider myself to be. I am 13. Not even my love for the show can veil my feelings for this cover. Why is it that you must make such elegant, beautiful people pose for such tasteless, skanky pictures. Rolling Stone isn’t known for having tasteful female photo shoots, but this is certainly an all-time low. Think about the show’s audience. The show is inappropriate, but this is disgusting. These pictures are taking away both Leighton and Blake’s dignity. If they don’t realize that and regret posing like that now, they will later in life. I am not even addressing the fact that both of these women are completely straight. Altogether, this is not the tasteful cover that with such gorgeous people, could have been possible.

preep | 3/19/2009, 6:41 pm EST

*cough* ew *cough*

this sucks

Rock Scandals 2009 | 3/19/2009, 7:04 pm EST

Great, put the Gossip Girls on this one, new talent, existing talent, most are real performers, but it is fun going to a live concert to see who is drinking a combination of nitrous oxide and foamed helium, ask anyone around the 40’s cartoons on TV, before digital and computerized/electronic voice effects, that was the way, and it was this mixture right up to a helium balloon for those high voice. Now, they just walk back to the drum platform with a guilty look on their faces and drink it from a cup, then instant 6-octave voice just like some of those wild 6-octave voices in Classic Rock, never to be repeated! Their tissue expands in their bodies, it’s the Opera/Classic Rock scandal look, a barrel with arms and legs and a huge helium head, you do hear and see this in all forms of music today, although Alternative Rock gave it a thumbs down and stayed within a normal 3-4 octave voice for their vocal styles. Even better when a keyboard player holds a note and a must have high note shoots out on the PA, that style of lip synching with “oxy2″ voices is a genre in itself! Can’t wait to see who’s doing it, it’s in the big-50 city workplace as well with cross dressers who need female voices, you hear one talking in that high, modulated voice and then another voice in the distance says, “Classic,” and the floor bursts out with a laugh. Oh, Baracuuda!

caro | 3/19/2009, 7:22 pm EST

i think gg is great! i watch it all the time, and i am in love with cb!!

xoxo, gg

Jay | 3/19/2009, 8:10 pm EST

At least its not Miley or all of the disney wannabes

katie | 3/19/2009, 8:38 pm EST

Do you know what’s worse than MTV watchers? Pretentious, stuck-up, criticizing losers who spend all day talking about how they are canceling their subscriptions because of this harmless article/cover. The fact of the matter is that GG is hip, relevant, and RS would be stupid not to put it as their cover. Gossip Girl has it’s faults, but is a good escape on Monday nights and by the way, has excellent music on their show. I hate people who think all television and everything in Rolling Stone has to be ‘art’.

Oh and all you people whining about how these women have no self-respect are being a bit condescending. If it was a man shirtless would he have no self-respect either? Lighten up and watch an episode of the Daily Show.

jack | 3/19/2009, 9:14 pm EST

Why aren’t two men shown together? One has to wonder if Rolling Stone magazine is homophobic towards two men being shown together in a sexy pose. Maybe Rolling Stone has a bisexual double standard.

michael | 3/19/2009, 9:19 pm EST

Yeah, why aren’t two men shown sucking on the same ice-cream cone? Double standards, eh? This should prove once and for all that Rolling Stone magazine is not a gay-friendly magazine. It simply props up the sleazy straight guy fantasy of “girl-girl action”.

me | 3/19/2009, 11:37 pm EST

i like the photos, they are nice

gen | 3/19/2009, 11:52 pm EST

Jesus, why are you guys hating so much?
the shows really popular, and its really good, and the cast is gorgeous.
They have a cover with rolling stone, deal with it.

thats an awful thing to say

Damien | 3/19/2009, 11:58 pm EST

i dont know why you guys are making such a big deal, the girls are hot, its a sexy cover.

Angie | 3/20/2009, 12:00 am EST

Anonymous | 3/20/2009, 12:10 am EST

Anonymous | 3/20/2009, 12:42 am EST

The best cover ever!

Dan | 3/20/2009, 12:54 am EST

Stick to music you dicks. No one cares about some shit teen drama show. Mastodon is releasing a new album, Phish reunited, South by Southwest is in full swing, and there have to be about a million more interesting forms of entertainment above lowest-common-denominator-ente rtaining tv shows. If I wanted to read about the lives of the stars Gossip Girl, I’ll get an US Weekly or Entertainment weekly. Rolling Stone is supposed to have some editorial taste and credibility on entertainment. Write about music, which is supposed to be your realm of expertise and the reason why I subscribe to your shit magazine. The subscription will not be renewed.

The Intl | 3/20/2009, 1:13 am EST

Another banal & insipid cover from Rolling Stone, inspired by today’s low-IQ youths.

HHAATTEERRS………. GOSSIP GIRL IS THE BEST THE REASON EVER1 IS TALKIN SO MUCH SHIT IS CAUSE THE’RE STUCK N OLD TIMES WERE IT WAS ALL BOUT MUSIC IN THE COVER OF ROLLING STONE….. ITS THE NEW MILLENNIUM GET OVER IT…. N LET ME JUST SAY THE COVER IS VERY SEXY…LUV LEIGHTON!!!

L | 3/20/2009, 4:40 am EST

It’s not a sexy cover simply because the blond one looks uncomfortable. I also really don’t see how a show about spoiled upper east siders is culturally relevant or why it’s on the cover of a magazine that is supposed to be about music and its cultural relevancy.

david huret | 3/20/2009, 5:18 am EST

Congrats for your first genuine porn cover- softcore that is. Next time, please, go hardcore.
Ah to think that issue number 1 had John Lennon on its cover. How times change…

AMAZING COVER! | 3/20/2009, 9:48 am EST

GG RULES! THABXOXO RS !

Tricia | 3/20/2009, 9:57 am EST

I have always defending the RS for who they have had on their cover but this is just fucking trashy, this magazine is supposed to be about music and real people not some girls licking an ice cream cone, it’s just slutty end of story.

tony montana | 3/20/2009, 11:01 am EST

this cover is smokin’ hot and i’d love to lick these luscious babes like an ice cream cone.
props to rolling stone for putting one of the sexiest covers ever on a non adult mag.
makes me want to buy the issue!

Tricia =FATBITCHWHORE | 3/20/2009, 11:25 am EST

Prude much?

Brad | 3/20/2009, 11:26 am EST

Oh, I get it. It’s like they are both licking a knob, but not really because it’s a ice cream cone, which allows for a kid-friendly simulation of man juice on their mouths. Hmmm…subtle. The fact that this is on the cover of ‘Rolling Stone’ changes my life zero.. If I want porn I’ll find it somewhere else. If I want relevant discussion on new music, I’ll find it somewhere else. No biggie.

Roberts | 3/20/2009, 11:29 am EST

The cover is scandalous and I like it. It expresses the mood of the actual show really well. I never read the books and at first I thought the show looked pretty stupid. Very shallow. Then I watched an episode and it sucked me in. I don’t care how stupid and childish some of the story lines may be, it’s way better than some of the reality TV shows we see all over the place. The show is definitely geared towards young women and I don’t believe many other demographics would enjoy it.

BrileyStyle | 3/20/2009, 11:31 am EST

Rolling Stone = Over, Thanks rolling stone for continuing to suck!

jen | 3/20/2009, 12:30 pm EST

you know if you want to read about your indie rock, trendy hipster bands, go read ‘SPIN’ they still focus just on music (although not all music)

‘Rolling Stone’ has been moving away from a specifically music focused magazine for quite some time, so I don’t know why this cover is a shock to many of you. I’ll bet you wouldn’t complain if Obama was on the cover again, not that I would either.

Gossip Girl is my guilty pleasure on Mondays and does feature good music, so if you don’t like the cover, don’t buy the magazine and stop whining

Ummm... | 3/20/2009, 1:27 pm EST

“It’s very strange to see a mob of paparazzi photograph Blake and Serena in character as they film an outdoor scene”

Huh? As THEY film and outdoor scene? You do realize that Blake (the actress) plays Serena (the character)??

Kris | 3/20/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Lmao gossip girl on the cover.??? WTF is this nickolodeon magazine…lmao

Candy | 3/20/2009, 1:50 pm EST

Everyone needs to stop hating did you not know that Rolling Stone not only focuses on music but pop culture and entertainment so get your facts straight!

wow | 3/20/2009, 2:52 pm EST

Hmm….another shameless attempt to improve readership by making a cover that guys can jerk off to. At the same time, it presents a stereotypical image of female teens as sluts (if two girls provocatively licking an ice cream cone in porn-worthy poses isn’t slutty, I don’t know what is). The best part however, has to be the legions of female teens defending it.

Isn’t this the magazine that started out with John Lennon on its cover? Just because its the new millenium doesn’t mean magazines have to embrace every vapid fad that emerges.

Culturally relevant, maybe. Sleazy cover worthy, absolutely not.

Sad....just sad. | 3/20/2009, 2:53 pm EST

There are used pieces of toilet paper with more class than this cover.

There are so many more deserving artists that deserve to cover over many of the lame choices this year. Recommendations including My Morning Jacket and Kings of Leon.

I am so sick of this shit, I am going to go subscribe to SPIN.

THERE'S ALWAYS HATERS!! | 3/20/2009, 7:20 pm EST

I mean… Get over it.. This show is relevant… You say “wtf? seriously Gossip Girl?” because you don’t watch it, yet still every one talks about it, for good or bad… Even you… That’s awesome, that a show with low ratings get that amount of talking and interesting in the people… All kind of people.. Teens love it, ‘cuase i’m one of them … You relate to that… You would say i don’t relate to drugs and drinking.. But you can relate to the treatment in highschool, it doesn’t matter if it’s privete or public… That kind of situations are always present in any kind of highschool… Plus the lines are brilliant, and the acting is very very good… Plus these are new faces, that actually can act… It is not like shitious Miley or stuff… That above that says “I’m Chuck Bass” It’s AMAZING, when that was on air every person watching that, right there, that simple line was tripping… And when you can do that to an auddience, even a small one, you doing killer job… So i think this show fucking rock!!! Rolling Stone has understood the power of that show… Even if haters can’t deal with it!!! Remember people: Rolling Stone, it is not only a music magazin, it is also about culture and the impact on that culture… Plus: Thhose pics are awesome.. Luv Leighton…

totallydude | 3/20/2009, 8:00 pm EST

Whats all the hate about. This is not the first time that RS has done this. They had David Cassidy naked at the height of bubble gum pop. The supermodle of the day always ends up on the cover. Pop culture is the life blood of our society. It is the fun house mirror that we look into and should not take so seriously.

done | 3/20/2009, 9:27 pm EST

There are some many more bands and individuals worthy of the cover. How about My Morning Jacket or Kings Of Leon?

High School Musical Cover, Gossip Girl….I am going to go subscribe to SPIN.

michelle | 3/20/2009, 11:32 pm EST

another issue i won’t be buying.

thanks.

basser | 3/21/2009, 1:42 am EST

Rolling Stone is now Teen Beat. Another crappy cover. At least the previous Rolling Stone cover of U2 was pretty cool, and the recent ones of The Eagles and Chris Martin. Wow, this is really sad. Is this a dirty biker magazine, Mad magazine or Tiger Beat?

Anonymous | 3/21/2009, 9:02 am EST

fantastic. i love gg. good cover

gg fan | 3/21/2009, 9:06 am EST

fantastic. great cover, great show. will definetly be buying it!!

tony montana | 3/21/2009, 10:21 am EST

wow:
two girls licking an ice cream cone does not make them out to be sluts.
it makes them out to be two sexulally healthy women who enjoy well..licking!
what’s wrong with that?
as long as the ice cream enjoys getting licked and the girls enjoy licking it then what’s the problem?
as long as their not licking every ice cream cone they see then they’re not ..let’s say ice cream sluts.
ya know the sexual revolution already occured.
praise to rolling stone for putting such a tantalizing and sexy cover.
i and many others love women who are not afraid to express their sexuality.
we all want it no matter what anyone say.

jude | 3/21/2009, 11:07 am EST

what`??

:”Gossip Girl presents the image of women being half brained and completely obseesed with guys, shopping, and inane fashion, as does pop culture as a whole. What’s worse is that a bunch of wrinkly old guys are making millions of dollars off of dumbing down female teens.”

first of all, I dont think they are making that much money, and they said in the interview that it was NOT old wrinkly guys behind this show.

secondly, the girls does not portray stupid girls obsessed with boys.
blair is obsessed with Yale!
Serena is confused as most teenagers are,
and so is the rest of the cast. they are always in the right fashionable clothes, but hello? do you see ANYONE else in ANY show, wearing ugly clothes if it doesnt fit their character?

ur comment was so stupid.

Hot cover and I love the show!!!

Momo | 3/21/2009, 10:52 pm EST

Pictures like this should be on playboy. I read this magazine because of my music interest. Maybe a new music magazine will come about and replace rolling stones as it changes into a different type of magazine…If that makes sense. Anyhow, this picture is degrading and all I can think about is when I have kids, will pictures like this be the norm??

Haters!! | 3/22/2009, 12:41 am EST

Lora | 3/22/2009, 3:08 am EST

I think people are just jealous of how gorgeous the cast of Gossip Girl is. And those who are outraged about it being about Gossip Girl should know that three of the castmates are also musicians. The cover is provocative just like the show. I think the photographer did an amazing job on the pictures, they are sexy but fun.

Madi | 3/22/2009, 3:26 am EST

To all those people commenting about the soft-porn, low-taste, culturally irrelevant gossip girl cover, I say get over it. Welcome to the 21st century – pretty much everyone sexually expolits people to sell their products. Just because GG uses this to their advantage to generate viewers doesn’t detract from the fact that it is GOOD SHOW!Yet somehow, it has earned itself a repuatation as ‘low brow’ and ’sexually gratuitous’. Compared to ‘culturally relevant’ shows like Dexter etc., its actually fairly tame, especially in terms of sex. So get of your high-horse, maybe WATCH the show and then make your judgements. Because honestly, Gossip Girl is one of the best things on TV right now.

Oh No! It's Sex! | 3/22/2009, 3:52 am EST

Gossip Girl is pop culture. I think it’s great that they’re on the cover.

I know that a helluva lot of us teenage girls are willing to jump to its defense out of sheer devotion to the show we so love – if it also makes us buy this magazine then kudos to the RS marketing department.

What I think is that Gossip Girl deserves to be on the cover. Perhaps not as much as some of the previous covers, but I’m certainly not outraged that they’re taking the spot of someone you deem to be ‘more worthy’.

If we’re all going to be little whores for watching trash like gossip girl and actually find the cover to be fun and cheeky rather than something to w**k off to then that’s your problem. ‘Coz frankly my dears, we don’t give a f**k.

Perhaps we’re not cultured enough to worship real music like you guys do. Your worship it like it’s sin not to. Did you ever think that you’ve become so conceited that perhaps you’re missing out on something? Of course you’re not. I mean, who could find enjoyment out of something shallow.

Entertainment should be that. Entertainment. Why should it all be deep and real and meaningful? I get that the arrival of Zac Efron to the TV screen also bumped up migraine medication sales, but he’s good at what he does. I’m sure you couldn’t do singing dancing acting(?) disney channel hunk half as well as he does.

I’m sure all your admired bands are coming from a strictly non-commercial stand point and would never dare to use sex as a selling point. It might be all about the music – but you can’t deny the sex is a perk.

Some of us are just more honest than others.

Anyway, I’m prepared to be called an idiotic teenybopper. To you I’m just a shallow 17 year old on my way whoredom – but if I enjoy the ride (pun so not intended) then what’s so bad about that?

to all haters: | 3/22/2009, 10:26 am EST

rollingstone didnt make any “wrong decision” in putting blake and leighton on the cover…its not TRASHY nor SLUTTY, its sexy and IS STILL ART. everything published is ART.
except for the HATERS who posted DUMB comments.

youre probably old and stinky thats why you hated the cover

well, hello to you. Gossip Girl is popular.

and if you hate that cover and want to stand up for your FUCK*NG COMMENT or THOUGHTS, then go talk to the author and director and writer and cast of Gossip Girl. Talk with the Rolling Stone Management!
As if they would care about your un-classy thoughts…
RS has been in the business for years so they wont put a dumb cover to ruin them,

YOURE NOT RS!!! your just dumb haters!

oh, and yeah, if ever the negative comments are more than the positive ones, it just means that the LOVERs immediately purchased the mag

and the HATERs just sit on their computers and whine.

QUIT WHINING STUPID A**HOLES!!!!

your whining wont change the cover and RS didnt make any wrong choice.

you made the wrong choice for not watching Gossip Girl. it may show bad stuff but it shows this stuff to show teens, even parents on whats really happening to the world. it serves as a “CAUTION SHOW” for them.

BACK OFF HATERS!

thank you, oh no its sex. I completely agree.

tv shows | 3/22/2009, 12:37 pm EST

I agree that Gossip Girl is pop culture, but don’t you think that if they are tapping into the TV world there are many other more deserving shows. I mean, Gossip girl has only been on for what, two years(if that)? What about Lost or any number of the Premium channel shows such as Entourage?

demon | 3/22/2009, 1:06 pm EST

Just what we need, two more hideously untalented “celebrities.” Note to Rolling Stone: you can find brainless, oversexed teenage girls willing to exploit their looks in any high school in America — does that make them cover-worthy? Remember when RS used to not be TeenBeat magazine. You know, back when it was actually worth reading.

wellidoloveit | 3/22/2009, 2:26 pm EST

no one actually gives a crap about serena and dan and jenny and people, we only have eyes for chuck and blair! and actually, so agree with oh no its sex, sister you are damn right.

we know its complete mindless shizzle over here in LONDON town, but we still l’adore!!!

everyone is always talking about, and i swear that like, nearly everyone has seen it, so BBOM to all those people who are like “its rubbish, lets watch lost or entourage instead”

oh yeah, and CR1ZZ, get a LIFE mate.

RS is lame | 3/23/2009, 11:39 am EST

I have no idea who these two sluts are but I would fuck them silly. Didn’t Rolling used to be a decent music magazine?

charismagirl | 3/23/2009, 4:45 pm EST

This cover photo is disgusting. How about an image that doesn’t border on pornographic and make me think of jizz. Keep it classy, RS.

Iron Vengeance | 3/23/2009, 5:57 pm EST

This cover is so deliciously trashy, I love it! Good job RS!

CK411 | 3/23/2009, 11:08 pm EST

If the imagery used on the cover is supposed to be sexual then a question would be if the person responsible for it is deliberately trying to sexually harass the public.

Lola | 3/23/2009, 11:14 pm EST

Oh, Gossip Girl. If the purpose of this cover was to create some buzz and get all the sad pathetic people who wouldn’t know art if it jumped up their ass all fired up, then mission accomplished. I read all of the wonderful comments and smile. The world needs haters.Sad, bitter, worthless haters. I love Gossip Girl and this cover is sinfully sweet! So please haters I beg, nay!I beseech you, keep hating- it makes beautiful people famous. And for those canceling their subscription, it’s probably for the best. Save that money to fill your prescription.Maybe it comes with a life- invest in one.:) Love GG

Old Rocker | 3/24/2009, 3:24 pm EST

Hey, “Oh No! It’s Sex!” Thanks for the best post on this page. Very well put, and I agree with everything you said. This coming from a 38 year old rock’n'roll fan who’s been a subscriber to RS for 25 years.

Your post reinforces my optimism for the next generation.

wellidoloveit | 3/24/2009, 4:41 pm EST

why is what? why you should get a life you mean? you say that you’re fourteen but why the fuck would you want to watch mtv in the 80s????

and you attack the show and cover, and then say you wouldn’t mind banging the two main girls?

wtf!!

gawd, i think THAT answers the question

sophomoreslump | 3/25/2009, 9:24 pm EST

I’m not offended that the Hills are on the cover. Well…I kind of am, but whatever, I’ve gotten used to disappointment when it comes to Rolling Stone.

No, what I’m really offended by is the fact that Rolling Stone is condoning the image of female sexuality being confined to naivety, youth and ‘barely legal’ syndrome. If you want the sales of horny, misoginist sheep who can’t come up with an idea of what they find attractive on their own? Go work for Playboy, but keep it the fuck out of this rag.

You know what? Before 2010 rolls around, why don’t you show me a woman past thirty-five being sexy? How about over forty? You couldn’t, could you, because you’re that afraid of making a statement about how women of every age, color and creed are being fucked over by todays society. You’re not being cute, you’re certainly not being clever. You’re selling out. Entertainment does belong in Rolling Stone, but I haven’t seen a single Rolling Stone writer put a toe out of line for years. Instead, you decide to go with the grain and fall into formation, just like every other tawdry tabloid. As a young woman who can think for herself and live for more than a week without the attention of the public eye, society has turned it’s back on me and everyone like me. But if every girl on the planet has to prance around like a Catholic cocktease for attention, then I quit. Of the list of alternative sources that I can count on for assurance that we’re not nosediving into a new age of women’s worth being equated to their sexual value, I can officially strike Rolling Stone off the list.

Shameless | 3/26/2009, 11:50 am EST

The new RS cover is just another disgusting and offensive display of the capitalization of teen sexuality. And all just to make a dollar…Why don’t you put something worthwhile and relevant on the cover? You know something about poltics, the environment or how about MUSIC? Truly shameless and in poor taste, RS…

disappointedlifer | 3/26/2009, 1:15 pm EST

As a lifetime subscriber to Rolling Stone, I adore the magazine in general. The stories on music are fantastic, but the mag really shines with the current news analyses and in-depth explorations of cultural trends.

However, the Gossip Girl “phenomenon” does not count as a trend, story, current event, music, or anything else interesting. The article was shallow and uninteresting, and seemed to be there just to have the soft-core porn cover that dripped (literally) with stupidity.

In the end, it was a disappointing waste of valuable page space.

Sick of The Hate | 3/27/2009, 12:44 am EST

At every comment section their are those that continue to bash RS. My brothers and sisters read something else that allows your minds to be happy.

With Thanks

AT | 3/27/2009, 1:47 am EST

My God. If you don’t like it don’t read it.

Subscriber for “20″ years or more? Letting the next generation on the COVER of a magazine take you away from your devotion to music and media? Pathetic.

Need to learn the latest update on your favorite 70’s band and can’t do it without RS?

Try GOOGLE.

Step aside, and brace your bad hip, because whether you can handle it or not the next generation is here.

Hypocrits. “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”. That’s what your generation (past) has told mine (present).

Practice what you preach.

Quiet, the Suede-Denim Secret Police are watching!

Sell them to the Seraglio.

Your Local Cynic | 3/27/2009, 11:39 pm EST

Okay, you’re all fucking morons. Rolling Stone is a pop culture magazine, it talks about the current issues and what’s going on in the world and it recognizes Gossip Girl as being a significant pop culture icon in America today. Twenty years ago, RS talked about rock music because that’s what was in. Today, rap and teen dramas are in. Jann Wenner started this magazine because none of the other magazines that were around talked about things he liked so he made one that did. And now it talks about what Americans like, and a lot of Americans, myself included, like GG, so to everyone bitching about this being trash: go fuck yourself!

ceceebe@wanadoo.nl | 3/29/2009, 1:27 pm EST

easy peasy-buy a REAL music mag-Mojo or uUncut.forget rolling stone-it lost any credibility years ago!

thank you sophmoreslump | 3/30/2009, 2:12 pm EST

I am in full and total agreeance with sophmoreslump…well put. Thank you. I find our current culture to be absolutely disgusting and worthless. Sorry but it’s just frustrating to see this tripe month to month.

Charly | 3/30/2009, 11:35 pm EST

I could say that i’m a GG fan, and i don’t get why so much hating. RS was, is and always will be interested in sales, if you are an indie-rock fans there are other magazines. I don’t know what you are preaching about, as if some of you actually were intellectual, or superior in comparison to a GG fan. You people claim to have good musical taste but yet you are suscribed on a magazine that gave Oops I Did It Again 4 stars. I mean some of you need to calm down and realize that there are other options, if you don’t like this edition you can buy SPIN or wait til other edition comes out.
Finally I think GG is one of the most of original shows right now. Of course I agree that Dexter, Heroes or Lost could be better, but be realistic what would sell better a cover of some superheroes, or this current cover?.

ONIS | 3/31/2009, 4:27 am EST

Have you ever heard the saying ‘a rolling stone gathers no moss’?

Gossip girl may not have been around as long as Entourage – but that’s the point. It’s new, it’s fun, it’s popular.

Perhaps, cover bashers, you guys have just stopped rolling.

theloveugive | 4/2/2009, 1:31 pm EST

I wait for Monday night to roll around just to watch my show GG. That sounds sad, like get a life, but it’s definitely addictive. Clever dialogue, beautiful people and killer scenery makes it one of the best shows on the tube today and constantly keeps my attention strong by always wanting more. As does Rolling Stone Magazine! Thanks again for my smile you guys!

theloveugive | 4/2/2009, 1:44 pm EST

Yes, I said tube. Showing my age? Perhaps, but there lies the irony. I love GG and Rolling Stone Magazine. As far as the cover goes, what a pair of beautiful and tallented young women. I’d say Jack White or Steven Tyler would do ‘em.

rienderien | 4/12/2009, 12:58 pm EST

I think that’s OK that they put Leighton and Blake on the cover. The problem is that the photos are disgusting. they are trying sooo hard to be sexy that it’s simply ridiculous. it’s not exactly their fault. they are nice and attractive girls and they could have had a better RS cover.

Melissa | 4/15/2009, 3:13 pm EST
