On the Charts: Kelly Clarkson’s “All I Ever Wanted” Grabs Top Spot From U2

The Big News: U2’s reign atop the charts was short-lived as Kelly Clarkson’s All I Ever Wanted sold 254,000 copies, giving the former American Idol champ her first Number One since her 2003 debut Thankful. Despite landing at the top spot, All I Ever Wanted sold less in its first week than her 2007 release, My December, which moved 291,000 and peaked at Number Two. The-Dream’s second album Love vs. Money sold roughly 100,000 fewer copies than Clarkson’s but enough to wind up in second place — a vast improvement over the Number 30 peak of his debut album Love Hate. U2’s No Line on the Horizon dropped down to third; J. Holiday’s Round 2 debuted at four and Taylor Swift’s mercurial Fearless landed at five.

Debuts: Outside of the top five, Chris Cornell’s Scream, Trent Reznor’s favorite album of the year, entered the charts at 10. Also infiltrating the charts was New Found Glory’s Not Without a Fight at 12, Punk Goes Pop, Vol. 2 at 15 and Taylor Hicks’ The Distance down at 58. Despite being a digital-only release, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ It’s Blitz did well enough to appear at 32 with 13,000 in sales.

Last Week’s Heroes: With a plunge in sales of 73 percent, No Line on the Horizon was the week’s biggest loser, dropping from first place to third. Neko Case’s Middle Cyclone, which surprised pretty much everyone by grabbing Number Three in its debut week, dropped to the 17th spot in its second week. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, had a good week: her self-titled 2006 debut crossed the four million sales plateau last week and Fearless is poised to go triple platinum by this time next week.

Taylor had some distribution problems. Oh, the life of an indie.
Hope he can keep workin it. Seems to be selling well at Grease. I bought one and its just a really good album.
Elliott Yamin is on it, some really good songs and great musicians.

Sally Griffin | 3/18/2009, 1:28 pm EST

Where she deserves to be. I’d love to see the cow who calls himself “stupid Kelly Clarkson.” Bet he is a sight if his intelligence matches his appearance.

Hi Sally,,,,,for the record, I am 135 lbs at 5 foot five (and a half), thank you very much. Kelly Clarkson is another example of what is wrong with the music biz these days,,,,,,and she’s a cow. Do we now equate stupidity to not likeing Kelly Clarkson,,,,stupid, stupid Sally.

“With a plunge in sales of 73 per cent,U2`s No Line On The Horizon was the weeks biggest loser”.That bears repeating, since their new CD has only been on sale 2 weeks, and is already falling down the charts, considering all of their relentless, all out promotion of it,like 5 straight nights on Letterman.I read in March 20th,Entertainment Weekly(Page 16) that U2 being on Letterman didn`t help Dave`s TV ratings either.

CR1ZZ | 3/19/2009, 4:54 am EST

Moto Moto you rule my friend.
She used to look f#!kable but know thats a saftey hazzard. I don’t have life insurance yet so yeah.
How her album surpassed U2 I fully don’t understand.
I’ve pointed this out on other blogs but I’ll say it again – the lyrics ‘My ife would suck without you’, WOW, so deep, she’s practically the new Ghandi with words like that filling the song.
Get into the business of selling American Idol brand fried chicken and dildos and make yourself truly contempt, (free merch for miss piggy).

CR1ZZ | 3/19/2009, 5:01 am EST

Oh and ‘Queen Song’;
Bohemien Rhapsody
We Will Rock You

Somebody To Love . . . . .

YES I KNOW QUEEN, (R.I.P Freddie)

stupid mark | 3/19/2009, 11:18 am EST

,,,,how stupid of you to think that this fat cow has talent,,,,you are an idiot.

Stupid, Stupid... | 3/19/2009, 1:06 pm EST

Isn’t what’s wrong with popular music today is that people who are good looking, but can’t sing are selling albums. While people who don’t look like models can’t get any airplay. So, judging a singer on whether or not you think they are sexy is contributing to the suckiness of music. All I care about is the music. Not if she is someone I want to sleep with. Like that is viable option to most of the yokels who are posting here. If you want to make any valid comments about Kelly Clarkson, talk about the music instead of her weight.

stupid "stupid stupid" | 3/19/2009, 1:26 pm EST

joking aside,,,,,Kelly Clarkson really does suck,,,,,she is a fake ass American Idol made up “star”. Period. Wanting to sleep with her, as you put it, is not even on the table,,,,,ick. She has used her looks to help push along her so-called talent. So, now that those looks are failing her, she will have to deal with the flip side. To bad for her tubby little self, and to bad for you,,,,,now you get to listen to that chubby little piglet snorting her way thru what you call the “music”. Stupid.

j | 3/19/2009, 4:45 pm EST

Kelly Clarkson sings better than you.

The only intellectual here... | 3/19/2009, 7:50 pm EST

Y’all are ignorant dumb asses.
A) Kelly clarkson has never relied on her looks, she says so herself many times. I for one think she looks great, like a normal healthy woman with curvyness in her blood, but thats a matter of opinion.
B)Any of you who say she has no talent should actually listen to her sing, her performance at the Grammy’s should be a good starting place.
C)She is so much more than a prissy little pop star and any idiot who believes she is has no right to state so because they obviously don’t know enough about her to have any sort authority to even mention her name. Let alone form a competent sentence about her, (which I know most of you can’t).

You may get the impression that I’m a screaming little fan girl at a Justin Timberlake concert sort but I actually do have an ear for good music, no matter the genre, and I can tell you that any true music appreciator that sits down with a song she’s written would feel the way any fan of hers does about her music. I don’t care if your into led zeppelin, fleetwood mac, snow patrol, frank sinatra, or the dam dixie chicks.

marleman | 3/19/2009, 10:47 pm EST

if you want to support your idol please do it with elegance.

Kelly has showed her talent wining awards as a songwriter for “because of you” around the world, she is a worldwide star, not just in USA.

Maybe that is why some fans of other idols are so mad about that. Please kelly is a singer, and artist, not a model, she sells her music, her songs not her body, I think kelly can beging to worry when she negings to lose her voice, her voice is better than before that is why she sells so well, and by the way, she has a beautiful image of a real woman and she is not an imposible dream for us. She is like the million girlsa around the wqorld… so normal. I love her music, and like most pepole call her, she is the american sweetheart.

She is actually normal | 3/20/2009, 4:39 am EST

So here is the thing, Kelly Clarkson is actually a normal weight. Normal being not 100 lbs like most of the female “artists” out there. She isn’t going to starve herself to sell CD’s like most of those girls do. So yeah, comparing her to the girls who weigh 100 lbs, she is going to look fat. Besides, her weight has nothing to do with her music, idiots.

slut-puppy | 3/20/2009, 4:58 am EST

Gosh, Kelly…. careful not to tip over, you might hurt someone!

But, aside from this, the lumpy pop-tart has some talent. The real problem is the industry people aren’t letting her find her identity. I admired her for her “take charge” attitude during “her December”… she should’ve proceeded in the vein of that album… if she would’ve done that, she would eventually become better and better… I remember listening to a song called “Hole”, which SOUNDED like Hole… or, at least it sounded like she was being inspired by the band, and other good music… and “Sober” was a good enough ballad, but who the hell wants to hear about her sobering up??? …just relax and have another shot, Kelly! ( But not with Avril, with Courtney! )

It’s just like she has nothing to say… she has this great range, strong enough voice (at least it’s not whiny), but no style, no vision… try reading a book sometime, Kelly. And hang out with smart, witty people. If we are forced to listen to you, at least put something out that’s half-way decent.

Ahh… who cares… Bob Mould’s record is coming out, and that’s what matters. I recommend buying it… people will hear where the best of bouncy, catchy radio-pop originates from… and there is nothing like the original.

All I gotta say is: WHEN HAVE ANY OF THE HATERS ON THIS COMMENT COLUMN SCORED A # 1 ALBUM?!!! Can any of you sing?

All I ever wanted... | 3/21/2009, 12:01 am EST

was two brussel sprouts and a half pound of butter?

Mike | 3/25/2009, 10:47 am EST

The album is the best to come out yet. People say she “screams” alot and that aint singing. Hmmm, it works for Mariah Carey…as scarey as she is.

Rock on Kelly! Your album was top notch in my opinion. A good ol texas girl. Just the way we like em. Those anoreix wanna be singers have nothing on this woman’s voice.

Odd…for someone that can’t sing it just has been revealed that now Kelly Clarkson is worth almost 50 Million. Yep…How many on here can say that? Oh, and before you answer…your lone star card isnt a credit card!
