Kanye West has been charged with three misdemeanors stemming from a September 2008 incident at LAX airport in which the 808s & Heartbreak rapper had a confrontation with paparazzi that resulted in cameras being smashed and Kanye being arrested. TMZ reports that the LA City Attorney charged West with misdemeanor counts of vandalism, battery and grand theft and that he’ll be arraigned April 14th.

West’s road manager/bodyguard Don Crawley was also charged with six counts stemming from the incident, two for vandalism, two for grand theft and two for battery. According to TMZ, if convicted on all charges, West would face two-and-a-half years in prison. West’s lawyer declined to comment on the charges.

As we reported back in September, West was walking through the American Airlines terminal when he confronted a pack of photographers that congregated nearby. From there, West reportedly smashed a camera on the ground while a photographer yelled for help. A TMZ camera operator videotaped West’s initial confrontation, prompting Crawley to then demand the TMZ photographer to give him the tape. The TMZer refused to hand over the tape, so then Crawley allegedly smashed that video camera. After all the purported camera smashing, West attempted to board his plane but was stopped by police. West then reportedly rushed the TMZ photographer and demanded “Gimme that fucking tape!” but was restrained by police. Both West and Crawley were booked and released.

Looks like the U.S. needs a seperate list for potenial flight threats for rappers. Kanye,DMX,Snoop and whatever egotistical moron from “tha hood” that don’t know how to act around normal people.Leave that kind of behavior in your “set”.You signed your life away to this kind of hounding from the papparazzi when you signed on the dotted line.”Homie”.It’s laughable that these douchbags rap about how hard they grew up selling dope and getting shot at.Now a dick armed with a camera is a big threat. If that’s the worst anyone can do to you now shouldn’t you be on cloud nine instead of being angry all the time. What lame asses.

comehomenow | 3/19/2009, 12:27 pm EST

To the first comment, you’ve never heard a Kanye song in your life, have you? Cause that’s not what they’re about.

If I was having a bad day and had people following me with cameras, I could easily lose it. So could all of you. Just cause someone is rich doesn’t mean they can’t have emotions. Stop being bitter cause you’re not.

Celebs are just regular people. I’m not sure why everyone thinks that they signed on for invasion of privacy and harrassment. As to all of the auto-tune comments, if you knew anything about music production you’d know that the auto-tune on 808’s & Heartbreak is a very light one and that he’s actually singing on key almost entirely by himself, with the auto-tune bumped up just a little bit to give effect. EVERY major label record with singing uses auto-tune now…ALL OF THEM. They just don’t all use it as an effect. So before you criticize art, become an artist you fruit.

I can’t help but wonder if the reason these charges resurfaced is because the cat in charge of TMZ is a high-powered attorney, and the camera man in question is an employee of his “entertainment” show.

I’m not big on West, but these charges are weak. Seriously, the situation with the paparazzi here in Los Angeles is fully retarded. The guy probably had been dealing with those clowns all day up until the point he acted out. I’ve actually seen some of these people taunt celebs on Melrose, and for the jackass who made the judgement call to harass West and his pals deserves what he got.

While what Kanye West did may have been a little but outside of the law, I agree with GodSendDeath, the charges are weak. With the way the paparazzi are today I’m surprised that the situation did not escalate from there. There should be a few places where the paparazzi simply are not allowed to go. Also, this article seems to be a few bits shy of telling us the whole story. His words seem to swing the reader towards siding with the police and the paparazzi. Though, they say nothing about what went on directly before the altercation occurred. Perhaps the paparazzi provoked Mr. West, or… maybe it really was him just acting out rashly. However, based on this article, the evidence is lacking some serious depth.

GodSendDeath | 3/20/2009, 2:46 pm EST

Right on, cp2 – there’s definitely some sort of clarity being withheld in the article. They’re trying to pass some legistlation out here right now to curtail this sort of thing (you’ve seen the Octomom bullshit, right hoss?), but for some reason, it’s been next to impossible to draft proper legal precident.
