Adam Lambert’s Bizarre Johnny Cash Cover Is the Talk of “American Idol” ’s Country Week

American Idol — the show that will honor itself with trading cards (we kid you not) — honored country music last night, bringing in Randy Travis to teach the kids a few things about getting to the Grand Ole Opry. Lesson one: dudes in nail polish are not welcome. And that’s about as far as the lessons went. Whoever gets through elimination will be on the Idol Summer Tour, so prepare to see a lot of Anoop Desai, Matt Giraud and Kris Allen. But before we get to the rankings …

• Adam Lambert’s “Ring of Fire”: Discuss.

As soon as last week’s star pulled a David Cook and announced he’d elected to sing Johnny Cash’s classic “Ring of Fire” but “I found a different version, it has this Middle Eastern flair” we knew we were in for something major. We didn’t expect a slithering and yowling performance that would pull comparisons to Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” (nice one, Paula Abdul!) and “Nine Inch Nails doing a country song” (less believable, but good try, Randy Jackson!). “The fire, the Egyptian thing, all a little strange,” said Kara DioGuardi, who added, “It left me confused and sort of happy.” And fulfilling the episode’s Tayor Hicks Bashing Quota, Ryan Seacrest noted, “We’ve come a long way since Taylor Hicks stood right here.” Rock Daily’s take: it was certainly interesting, but it wasn’t wise.

Ones to Watch:

• Anoop Desai turned Willie Nelson’s “You Are Always on My Mind” into a slick R&B ballad that transformed him from zero to hero, per Simon Cowell, who was probably just waiting for the moment to whip out that line.

• Kris Allen’s parents rather than his wife were in the crowd cheering him on (perhaps he heeded Simon’s advice? Update: Commenters say wife was there.), and they had reason to smile: The judges adored the “tender moments from my dog, Kris.” Frankly, he reminded us of a post-pubescent David Archuleta. Archie, there’s still hope!

• Megan Joy (formerly Corkrey)’s cork-dance was a little obscene in that chest-hugging dress. But all the judges went bonkers with praise for getting through “I Go Walking After Midnight” so well with the flu.

• Matt Giraud tackled Carrie Underwood’s “So Small” and earned lots of judge love. If piercing through people’s hearts is a good thing, then what Paula said was actually praise.

Meh:

• The judges were split on Danny Gokey’s “Jesus Take the Wheel.” This guy works in a church, so if he can’t score with a Jesus song, we’re not sure what’s going to work.

• Allison Iraheta’s Patti Loveless cover was precocious or dope, depending on which judge you ask. Our vote: dopish.

Ones to Wipe From Your Memory With Bleach:

• Alexis Grace seriously butchered the phrasing on a true classic, “Jolene.” Jack White should slap the pink out of your hair for that one, Alexis.

• Michael Sarver was upstaged by his harmonica player during his Garth Brooks cover, then tried to argue his way out of negative comments with “If we were all perfect, we wouldn’t need this show.” Next!

Thanks for the Memories:

• Lil Rounds didn’t feel comfortable, says Randy, who was just keeping it real.

• Scott MacIntrye accompanied himself on piano for his Martina McBride song, and got criticized by Paula, who called the instrument a crutch. If you thought that was offensive, Simon added that Scott’s songs are doing a little of that, making the “going over my head” motion. Have you two learned nothing from Ryan Seacrest’s High-Five of Doom?

kris allen’s wife was in the audience..they showed her like 5 times during his performance..not sure how you missed that one

tennismom | 3/18/2009, 9:07 am EST

Adam’s performance was the most amazing in the history of idol. My 50 year old husband, 15 year old son and I are awestruck each week by his talent. We will all buy his music.

john | 3/18/2009, 9:22 am EST

Why should Adam be over the top all the time? Certainly he likes to get attention. Without all the acting out things, his singing would have been better. He is just weird.

ellen | 3/18/2009, 9:23 am EST

I liked Adam. I bought the Beatles White album when I was young.I loved Jim Morrison. So Adam has one thumbs up from an aging baby boomer.

t | 3/18/2009, 9:32 am EST

Ditto on the Kris Allen’s wife comment. She was definitely shown. Many times.

Booty Hunter | 3/18/2009, 9:54 am EST

Bye Bye Michael Sarver
Megan’s cans..oh my!

Linda | 3/18/2009, 9:55 am EST

IMO, Adam’s performances give me a reason to watch this show every week. Never know what he’s going to pull out of that bag of tricks.
More power to him!

Andrea | 3/18/2009, 9:57 am EST

Adam Lambert is an American Idol. Why?
He is a True Artist, he performs with passion, not to please everyone… that! is being true to yourself! He is brave to show his sexuality, and his voice… truly gifted! His range is unbelievable… watch some of his clips on You Tube. His found version of Ring of Fire is absolutely amazing!..I don’t know whether to laugh or sit still… almost couldn’t believe the boldness of this crazy talent… I Love his performance, don’t hear and see this everyday. Unique, bold, free, and compelling…

Brenda | 3/18/2009, 10:04 am EST

Matt Giraud’s the only one I really want to watch. He’s one very talented guy.

ryan | 3/18/2009, 10:07 am EST

I am obsessed with Adam Lambert.
He’s the only reason I watch AI-
Superstar in the making

Karen | 3/18/2009, 10:09 am EST

Adam truly stands-out among other contestants of the American Idol. Kris, Matt, and Anoop’s performances were really good. But nothing like Adam’s! It is like….. watching a true Star… there is something about him, almost hard to explain.. he has the whole package, and he is definitely not generic. You don’t make this kind of artist… you are just born with it.

Chewiebacca | 3/18/2009, 10:11 am EST

Megan is so AWESOME!

Rico | 3/18/2009, 10:17 am EST

I want Bruce Springsteen, Beatles, and then Motown week. Ya dig? Go Anoop.

Booty Hunter | 3/18/2009, 10:24 am EST

I want Lil Rounds rump and Megan’s melons

Midd | 3/18/2009, 10:27 am EST

Wife makes me watch this show, ADAM ROCKS!!.. this guy is incredibly unique with his own fresh spin.. a nice break from what are mostly very nice but karaoke performances

conni | 3/18/2009, 10:34 am EST

When Ryan said “we’ve come a long way since TH stood here” are you sure that he meant they had come a long way in a good way?
Because they have sure went downhill since Taylor stood there.
I heard a few people who were almost angry about Adams performance.

Juliette | 3/18/2009, 10:47 am EST

Can’t believe RS, of all people, can’t see the brilliance that was Adam’s Ring of Fire.

Not wise, you say? It was INSPIRED. And very brave.

Dylan on Idol | 3/18/2009, 10:53 am EST

Did anyone miss the fact that Kris Allen did Bob Dylan’s Make you feel My Love? Garth Brooks did the most famous version of this…but it was written and first recorded by Bob Dylan for his 1997 album Time Out of Mind! One of the judges said it didn’t sound country at all…THAT’S BECAUSE IT’S NOT A COUNTRY SONG!!

Jen | 3/18/2009, 10:56 am EST

Every great entertainer has been called “weird” at some point – even Elvis. It’s because they take chances and are “out of the box”. American Idol has certainly needed this – it’s become so boring.

Adam Lambert will never be accused of being boring. We are watching a great entertainer being born folks. It doesn’t matter if he wins – he will leave the rest in the dust.

Gioconda | 3/18/2009, 10:58 am EST

Bizzare?????
This rendition did honer Johny Cash better than the Hamburger Commercial…no one was out raged back then… I was!!
This guy KNOWS what he want as an Artist,,,,become a Country singer is not in his plans….
Have you heard the lyrics of this song????????
He did a great Job!!!!!!!!

You go ADAM!!!!!!!!!!

Jessica | 3/18/2009, 11:09 am EST

I think Adam’s performance was brilliant.I heard it without watching it and it was really really good.It had a modern edge kick to it,and it was way better than black and white. So this proves that the judges were judging him on his showmanship and looks and not his voice before.I love his uniqueness.Hope he makes it to the next round.Go
Adam!!!

Hurt | 3/18/2009, 11:10 am EST

Nine Inch Nails doing a country song? I don’t think it’s ever been done before. Wait a minute Randy Jackson, it’s called “Hurt.” A Johnny Cash song nonetheless. And sorry folks, Adam Lambert’s version of “Ring of Fire” was nothing like “Hurt.”
And since when is “To Make You Feel My Love” a Garth Brooks song. Last I checked Bob Dylan wrote it. American Idol needs to credit the original artists, not the cover artists.

Laura L Garza | 3/18/2009, 11:12 am EST

I got a Jim Morrison Vibe from Adam!! We loved it!!

Hurt | 3/18/2009, 11:13 am EST

Also, Lambert’s version is the same version Dilanna did on “Rock Star” a few years back. Only hers was better.

Anonymous | 3/18/2009, 11:29 am EST

Adam Lambert is the sound of Jim Morrison being f’ed in the a, by Freddie Mercury.

Lisa | 3/18/2009, 11:46 am EST

It was like Adam gave Randy Travis a big FU. I loved it!Do not even remember the name of any other song that was sung last night.

Nicole | 3/18/2009, 11:48 am EST

I”m surprised Rolling Stones didn’t like Adam. He’s different, unique, talented… a born performer. I guess everyone is getting too caught up in the “cookie-cutter” image of music. There’s a reason music sales are down, and its not just becasue of the recession… lol

hot momma | 3/18/2009, 11:55 am EST

I love adam! He just is over the topsexy, his voice is amazing, and he isn’t one of those typical AI singers that sing great, but will not be remembered when they get voted off. We will remember adam!

Cyrano Cowboy | 3/18/2009, 11:56 am EST

The Harmonica player needs to be brought more into the Spot Light, HE ROCKED.

Barbie | 3/18/2009, 12:15 pm EST

For the life of me I don’t know why AI can’t go a week with out bashing Taylor. Taylor is a once in a lifetime artist and a true gentleman, who never stops thanking AI for letting his “voice be heard” and DID win Season 5; no matter how much people try to spin it.

frank | 3/18/2009, 12:22 pm EST

I already read about Adam’s ripping off Dilana on WEHATEIDOL.com last night. He’s a loser.

Will | 3/18/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Adam, sing “Sweet Child O’ Mine” on American Idol. YOu Rock Dude!!

Bobbi | 3/18/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Adam reminded me of the guy from silence of the lambs “it puts the lotion in the basket.”

Amadala | 3/18/2009, 12:47 pm EST

I think Adam is wonderful and very handsome but his look is way over the top…he needs to loose the gold chains and tone down a little. He’s a lot punk and punk is out…I hope they do some work and give him a David Cook make over.

Anonymous | 3/18/2009, 12:49 pm EST

I think what Ryan meant about coming along way since Taylor Hicks was that Taylor was a very mature looking person and dressed in suit jackets and Adam was wild and wears nail polish!!

Leonie | 3/18/2009, 12:49 pm EST

anyone else hear shades of Jeff Buckley? Adam was great, huge talent ….cant wait to hear some GnR from him!

Karen | 3/18/2009, 1:03 pm EST

Adam’s attitude was insulting and offensive. His snideness about never wanting to go to Nashville, which has long been the heart of authentic American music, may support his image as rebellious-rocker, but it also fuels the worst type of ignorance.

Randy Travis is not used to seeing men with nail pollish, sure enough, but he treated Adam with respect regardless. Adam was not big enough of a man to show this genre of music the same respect.

The Hater | 3/18/2009, 1:06 pm EST

@ Hurt – ‘Hurt’ is a NINE INCH NAILS song, not a Johnny Cash song. Cash recorded it for a covers album.

ssandy | 3/18/2009, 1:06 pm EST

adam is truly, truly amazing! his range, his looks, his voice, he’s got to win. he is definately not the same old same old, like the others. i wish he would sing bohemian rhapsody, the freddy mercury song. WOW!

Joan | 3/18/2009, 1:11 pm EST

Adam Lambert is a born star. An original artist. It was nothing short of brilliant what he did with Ring of Fire. His vocals are amazing. Can’t wait to hear what he does next week.

I’m a woman in my 7th decade, and a big fan as you can see. Go Adam!

chiwawamomma | 3/18/2009, 1:19 pm EST

I was very disappointed with Adam this week. He was an embarassment to country music. Last he was awesome, but he failed this week. I can understand making it your own, but tone it down when it needs to be toned down.

Cathy | 3/18/2009, 1:24 pm EST

Anyone who thinks Adam should still be on this show after last night’s performance is delusional. He butchered that song. He could have made changes to that song with out completely dishonoring it the way that he did. It was awful, the worst performance ever. I’d rather see Sanjaya. Johnny Cash probably turned in his grave. That wasn’t art, that wasn’t talent, it was just disgusting. I hope he gets voted off, what an idiot.

Sarah | 3/18/2009, 1:54 pm EST

Adam’s performance was the best, interesting and brave in this whole boring evening. If it wasn’t him, I would have not watching this season at all!!!!

hypnotized | 3/18/2009, 1:58 pm EST

Adam’s performance was hypnotizing. his vocals were amazing. he is gorgeous and I love his style. he has star power that hasn’t been seen in decades. he’s too cool for this show. I can’t believe people are bashing him, do you not have ears? regardless of whether or not you liked the song or if you don’t like his look, truly listen to his voice…it’s magical. He makes the other contestants look like little kids singing in their bedrooms into their hairbrushes. Do we really need more performers like that? this season would be so dull without him. Adam is the true meaning of an artist. He expresses himself through his voice, music, style and moves. he is the total package. he is not someone who is trying to figure out their identity while being led around like a little puppy dog by the american idol machine. he is truly talented. and why do we all care so much about whether or not someone can sing country? you can take lyrics from any song and make it something completely different. why is everyone getting so bent about this? american idol should just drop the different themes each week and let the performers showcase who they truly are so we can see what kind of music they will make as an artist, but wait then they might not fit into that dorky song they have to sing after they win. adam will be better off if he doesn’t win so he can go onto become the rock god that he is. love him so much it hurts……

megan | 3/18/2009, 2:02 pm EST

Dilana copied an earlier version. It’s not hers. And Adam did say he found a version that he used. Adam’s vocals were way better than Dilana and he put his spin on it.

I thought Adam showed a ton of class. He was the only one not to talk back to the judges. If you listen to the vocals, you will be amazed by the changes, tone, and falsetto perfection. He’s simply amazing. Most brilliant performance ever on Idol

kathleen | 3/18/2009, 2:08 pm EST

I watch American Idol to watch Adam. Otherwise it is becoming a boring show. Last year there was the David Cook ‘Billie Jean’ moment, now we have Adam every week. Everyone in my family from my 80 year old mom to my 15 year old son are awestruck by his performances.

gyuszi | 3/18/2009, 2:14 pm EST

I just watched Adam’s performance on tube…Wow! Magnificent! His take on Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” was simply brilliant! Simply the best Idol performance ever. His vocal performance was more than perfect. He took this classic country song from ’63 and turned it into a radio/record ready hit for ’09. WHAT A TALENT!

Jennifer | 3/18/2009, 2:22 pm EST

I am not a fan of country music so I thought Adam’s rendition of the song was outstanding! He’s definitely my favorite! His voice reminds me of the 80s “glam rock” bands like Queensryche, Skid Row, etc. I love it! I can’t wait to hear more :)

ltr08 | 3/18/2009, 2:32 pm EST

Adam made a poor choice. There is a fine line between “over done” and brilliance…His perfomance went way beyond over done into the ridiculus range. To me he comes off cheesy …over “packaged” with the hair and nails, eye make up, all of his performaces are over arranged… you never really get a clear shot at hearing just his voice…bottom line I think he just over does all of it and it winds up being unappealing.
No doubt the guy has a great set of pipes…I would LOVE to see him do something totally pared down…
highlighting his voice …he just pushes to far, and it comes of cheesy,

Tookie | 3/18/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Adam Lambert is absolutely awesome.
His voice is incredible.
He has a little Elvis/Gothic vibe going in looks and manerisms but is very unique.
The great ones take chances and make changes and become superstars.
You are watching another great one blossom.
He’s brilliant and I’ll but his CD.
Peace,
Tookie

betty | 3/18/2009, 2:40 pm EST

vote Adam!

howard Bergesen | 3/18/2009, 3:06 pm EST

I am a big country fan and although
Adam’s song was not traditional, I thought it was shocking in a good way. I was in a trance during his creative interpretation. This is the kind of music that makes me want to listen all day long.

Gary | 3/18/2009, 3:06 pm EST

Any one that thinks that “version” of ring of fire was better then Dilana’s did not watch rockstar supernova. I love that song, I love Dilana’s version, but I turned that crap off!!!!!

Adele | 3/18/2009, 3:07 pm EST

I wasnt sure about Adam at first but the last few weeks made me really see how truely talented he is. I think its funny that country folks are so upset about his rendition of the song, I guess there not used to other kinds of music since there stuck up there in the hills with there bad perms and mullets

Peter Pan | 3/18/2009, 3:13 pm EST

I think Adam did a cheesy performance but I love that an out gay man might be the next Idol.

Swimmer Bill | 3/18/2009, 3:16 pm EST

Love it or hate it, Adam Lambert’s performance of “Ring of Fire” is the most talked-about singing performance in recent memory. Its brilliance was in its unfamiliarity. I watched in disbelief and awe, my mouth hanging open. It pushed me back from the TV. Lambert’s performance left me feeling stunned, shocked, and intrigued. It felt like something completely new and strange had arrived from another planet and decided to take over the world. Transcendent and iconic.

Mariyas | 3/18/2009, 3:18 pm EST

This batch is the best among the 8 seasons. All good vocals. All can show how good they are when they sing ballads. All are versatile. All can do twists and turns and falsetto with ease and good control of their voice.
So what separates these if all of them sing ballads?
Matt shines among them with his vulnerability, sensitiveness and smoothness.
He outclassed Danny not only this week but since Hollywood week with his soulful rendition of Georgia.
The really unique ones who are differrent from all the rest are:
Megan has beautiful sound and unique voice and style.
Allison who rocks and delivers her style well with her raspy voice.
Alexis is a force to reckon with, with that Aretha’s song. She should sing the blues.
But Adam stands out whose vocals and range is out of this world.
He simply is a STAR! His electrifying Black & White is the best of all AI history.
His Ring of Fire again stands out and will always be remembered as mesmerizing.
I’m simply disappointed with Lil from whom I expect more to wow me which has never happened. I’m still waiting for her to kill a song with her rendition. All ordinary.
No surprises at all from her.

Lee | 3/18/2009, 3:20 pm EST

Adam keeps the show from being a total trite, boring rehash…AI is lucky to have him on this season. The exposure will probably get him a record deal – in the meantime, I’m downloading all his performances & enjoying a lot of others on youtube.

Dilana who? | 3/18/2009, 3:22 pm EST

Adam is in a much higher level.

He made the song his own.

Erika | 3/18/2009, 3:42 pm EST

Adam is Brilliant Artist! Not karaoke average scripted (seen it all and all same) monkey performer…. I am so happy that i can finally watch someone so talented. He always wows me…in very positive pleasant way.. What a talent!

Jana | 3/18/2009, 3:49 pm EST

Someone wrote about Adam “He makes the other contestants look like little kids singing in their bedrooms into their hairbrushes. Do we really need more performers like that? this season would be so dull without him.” What A GREAT OBSERVATION. Adam is BRILLIANT!

bambi | 3/18/2009, 3:50 pm EST

I think the Jeff Buckley comparison is way off the mark. Jeff’s falsetto is holy and resonant while Adam’s is a little, uhm, scandalous. I think Adam ruled this week but to compare him to Jeff is just ridiculous.

jackie | 3/18/2009, 3:54 pm EST

I thought Adam’s version was great… I really enjoyed it. It reminded me of ’sister awake’ by The Tea Party.
I really enjoyed it. The judges have no idea what their talking about. The only one that has a clue of what is going on in that show is Simon, and sometimes, he has no idea.

Han2 | 3/18/2009, 3:58 pm EST

Adam made me speachless, he is out of this world… AI is too good for him, he deserve better

Nadia | 3/18/2009, 4:01 pm EST

In Europe everyone will love him!

Jacquline-C | 3/18/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Adam took a classic standard and turned it upside down. Ring of Fire slowed down like that exposes the lyrics very gritty meanings. Johnny Cash would not have minded, he did after all, take Trent Reznor’s ” Hurt” directed by Rick Rueben and take it country. The song’s rendition is more analagous to the Doors than Zepplin.
In any event, Adam can sing anything in any key, better him than just another carbob copy of yet another pop star.

Kashmirkissy | 3/18/2009, 4:14 pm EST

This guy’s a capital D-douche. He makes me cringe. I believe he everything I had hate in this world, stylistically. I cannot believe Paula said he reminded her of Zeppelin. F* that! He thinks he’s so awesome and I can’t stand that. Ughhh!

rhonda | 3/18/2009, 4:29 pm EST

Adam deserves to remain till the end. He is truly amazing.
and a true showstopper!!!!

rhonda | 3/18/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Adam deserves to remain till the end. He is truly amazing.
and a true showstopper!!!!

Eden | 3/18/2009, 4:32 pm EST

Adam is making me crazy. I can’t have enough of him. I watch his performances over and over again. Help!!! Oh gosh. He makes me 16 again :-)
I’m from Israel, and in Israel Adam is the most likable and adored this season. No other contester can even get close to him. He is huge, a Phenomenon.

JP | 3/18/2009, 4:34 pm EST

IMO, Adam’s version sounds more like an out-take from the last Muse album…

Collette | 3/18/2009, 4:34 pm EST

I just love Adam Lambert, amazing , mesmerizing, a true talent, hot, hot, hot,

Ravin | 3/18/2009, 4:43 pm EST

Okay, first off, Adam is HORRIBLE. BLECH. Please make him go away! Second, NIN has covered a country song, it’s called Hurt and it’s also by Johnny Cash and it sounded NOTHING LIKE THAT.

Hannah | 3/18/2009, 4:48 pm EST

NIN did not cover a country song.
Please look at the songwriting credits for “Hurt”
it says Trent Reznor, not Johnny Cash.
But seriously… Adam is horrible

James | 3/18/2009, 4:52 pm EST

Adam is amazing, should win this completion. no doubt!

James | 3/18/2009, 4:54 pm EST

Adam is amazing, should win this competition. no doubt!

Hannah | 3/18/2009, 4:56 pm EST

Who seriously wants to listen to an album full of 80’s hair metal falsetto?

There are so many much better glam-ish singers out there. I don’t even want to know what kind of crap you’d have to listen to to think Adam is amazing…

Anonymous | 3/18/2009, 4:58 pm EST

my advice to any guys wishing to sleep with Adam Lambert: wear 3 condoms!

marcovivio | 3/18/2009, 5:13 pm EST

Ravin, seriously! I didn’t think people that read Rolling Stone were that ignorant. Hurt is originally a Nine Inch Nails song. Check it out.

Petra | 3/18/2009, 5:22 pm EST

Adam is simply BRILLIANT!He is a true artist…and the best thing that could happen to AI. Rest is so karaoke (sing along), dull…. kids without imagination… I hope Adam is being noticed by music industry. He is amazing!

A.C. | 3/18/2009, 5:24 pm EST

Adam’s performance was absolute shit. I found the Led Zeppelin and nine inch nails comparisons deeply offensive. He needs to go home and never sing again.

A.C. | 3/18/2009, 5:28 pm EST

By the way, I don’t think Randy Jackson was that ignorant. I’ve been a nine inch nails fan for 15 years. Despite having recorded a couple of cover tunes in the past,(”Supernaut”, “(You’re So) Physical”, “Dead Souls”) I’m pretty sure Trent Reznor would rather have a flop with his own songs than have a hit with a cover tune. And besides, I think Trent would have a lot more taste and style than what was shown last night. Absolute shit. As offensive to my ears as any Nickelback or Three Doors Down record in recent memory. Absolute shit.

ndgardengirl | 3/18/2009, 5:30 pm EST

As weird as it was, Adam rocked the house. I look forward to his performance every week. He at least makes the show interesting.

eric | 3/18/2009, 5:34 pm EST

adam sounds like a Muse tribute singer. cant’ stand him

hated the hater | 3/18/2009, 5:35 pm EST

My advice for the guy who advised any guys wanting to sleep with Adam Lambert to wear three condoms:

Don’t breed.

Please.

ok losers hurt is by nin and cash did the remake. its not a country song. GO ADAM! We Love U!

Christina | 3/18/2009, 6:00 pm EST

Adam makes AI worth watching. What an incredible talent! And he gives his all to every performance.

Sabrina | 3/18/2009, 6:23 pm EST

Does anyone notice a distinct pattern here?

ADAM IS EITHER “ADORED PASSIONATELY” OR “HATED IMMENSLY”

Love/Hate

One arguement in Adam’s defense whether you love him or hate him, he at least has talent he may not have a the taste some of you readers prefer but he has TALENT, no one can take that from him!

He will go far..

Anonymous | 3/18/2009, 7:08 pm EST

my advice to hated the hater:

go die in a fire.

Becky | 3/18/2009, 7:13 pm EST

Absolutely LOVED Adam’s performance. I can’t get it out of my mind. He just oozes sensuousness and emotion. A great performer with an incredible voice. I want more!

Starrlight | 3/18/2009, 7:26 pm EST

HAHAHA!!

Oh man the righteous indignation of “Ravin” coupled with he/she/it’s total lack of musical knowledge was priceless. Made my day.

Grace | 3/18/2009, 7:29 pm EST

Folks…firstly, not every artist is a country music artist. It’s like if you’re Queen and asked to do country. How do you get out without looking silly. You do what Adam did! The only one who demonstrated originality was him. He hit every single note perfectly. LOVE ADAM!!!!

I went to High School with Adam… looks totally different now…but he’s always been singing! He’s one eccentric motha…but dude is an artist and he should win…

Rod | 3/18/2009, 7:54 pm EST

I’m surprised by everyone who thinks Johnny Cash would roll over in his grave because of Adam’s version of one of his songs. After all, he covered a Nine Inch Nails song and put a country twist on it. Was that a butchering too? As a musician who himself lived near the edge, I suspect he would have appreciated it.

Joshua Miller | 3/18/2009, 7:57 pm EST

Adam Lamberts confidence in not seeling out and keeping it original is what is going to catapult him to MAJOR SUCCESS. He is the only contestant on AI who is capable of making music a career. He is the making of a Musical Genius and has every bone in his body dedicated to music… Adam will be a Legendary Artist. When we are old and grey he will be one that we will still be talking about.

leanie | 3/18/2009, 8:27 pm EST

The boy has talent.
The boy will go places.
Amazing voice and stage presence.

He would have better suited for Rockstar with Dave Navarro as compared to American Idol though…

SimonCowbell | 3/18/2009, 9:16 pm EST

If you threw Axl Rose,Elvis Presley and George Michael in a blender you would get Adam. Oh well-he said from the start he didn’t want to be a country star. Hey Velvet Revolver:Here’s your new lead singer.

KaraBoring | 3/18/2009, 9:18 pm EST

Adam is the one memorable character in a season of faceless douchebags!

Shirley | 3/18/2009, 10:43 pm EST

I loved Adam’s version of Ring of Fire! Adam is so far beyond his years! He is Fantastic. The old fogies won’t get him, but we all know he has what it takes to create a totally new sound. Keep him on American Idol as long as you can! The rest of the contestants are boring.

Bridget of MI | 3/18/2009, 11:12 pm EST

Honestly… I can’t see the point of the “Adam bashers”. I mean if he’s SO terrible, how is it that he sticks around? IF you hate him so much then just ignore him and vote for your favorites.

Adam is the most unique contestant we’ve ever had on American Idol by far. He’s a fresh young Freddy Mercury with a hint of Matt Belamy from Muse. His vocal range and control is amazing and he deserves way more credit than he is getting. Not to mention he is BEAUTIFUL to look at, gay or straight. Any woman would love the honor of turning that man straight.

I think he has a huge demographic and it will show soon. If he made it past country week, he can do anything. His version of Black or White alone was enough to get him signed.

Rock on, Adam!

ambeart | 3/18/2009, 11:25 pm EST

Wasn’t that the Universal Hall Pass / Mugatu version of “Ring of Fire” that Adam Lambert did? I keep reading about Dilana, but the other version is from 2002 or 2003. Give props or condemnation where it is due! Personally, I loved it.

evilkitten08 | 3/18/2009, 11:40 pm EST

Adam is the best thing i’ve seen on the joke that is American Idol….He is amazing…very Jeff Buckley…His youtube vids are way more entertaining than anything he will be allowed to do on Idol…Oh…and I notice poor grammar, homophobia and much immaturity as the voice of Adam’s haters…grow up little boys……ps~ Cash covered NIN not vice versa…learn your shit before you post…~

yourmom | 3/19/2009, 1:42 am EST

“Hurt” was written by Trent of NIN…doesn’t make it a NIN song. Johny Cash recorded it as well. This happens all the time people! Furthermore, this kid is a mastermind. Fuck American Idol and why the hell does this kid even need to be on the silly show? I hope he doesn’t win for his own sake.

chris | 3/19/2009, 2:59 am EST

i thought the song was GREAT, and you have to keep in mind that i never liked adam. i’m still not that nuts about him, but i have to give him credit for that song…

it was unsual, interesting, slinky and sexy. and in this day where so much of what we listen to sounds manipulated for mass appeal to the point that it’s lost all its passion, this came across just the opposite: fiery and a little controversial. well done.

so ironically, my vote for Best Song Of The Night would go to my least favorite idol. (and i have to say that matt and kris were great, too).

nevermind | 3/19/2009, 3:14 am EST

i found the performance very weird.. kind of like he was seducing/threatening the viewers. Maybe it was because of his eyes? i’m not realy sure. still, it’s too bad that he’s gay. Uhmm.. has anyone else noticed his underwear is etched in his pants that night? i wonder how he inhaled that time.

baggio | 3/19/2009, 6:08 am EST

It was a little weird, but at the same time it was absolutely brilliant. I think Johnny Cash would have been honored to have heard such a unique and quality interpretation of his own brilliant song. This kid is the real deal and certainly not forgettable. Simon is on crack!

anonymous | 3/19/2009, 7:37 am EST

Yes it is Universal Hall Pass version of Ring of
Fire. If you go to her website and go to her sounds page, you can hear the version he got it from.

Hannah | 3/19/2009, 7:53 am EST

His voice is for theater.
He is not a pop singer. He is not a rock singer. Unless he’s doing 80’s hair metal covers.

Vance Mahaffey | 3/19/2009, 9:08 am EST

Adam Should be kicked off American just for stupidity. He disgraced Mr cash and his family.

Anonymous | 3/19/2009, 9:44 am EST

For the record, Ring Of Fire was NOT written by Johnny Cahs.

It was written by his late wife, June Carter Cash.

(There’s a scene in Walk The Line, where she’s writing it.)

bryan burchfield | 3/19/2009, 10:30 am EST

“Ring of fire” was written by June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore. Kilgore was Hank Williams Jr. best friend, touring partner and mgr.Adam’s version was “GAY” to say the least and Simon is a rich bonehead. But it was diffrent to say the least.

Bee | 3/19/2009, 10:41 am EST

Went to the Universal Hall Pass site: nothing to hear there and also the link for sneakyrecords is corrupted and brings you to a medical supply site! Wish I could hear the original but no matter; I have gone to Youtube and listened to it over 50 times since Wednesday morning! Rock on Adam; Idol should be paying you to be on their show!

Jason | 3/19/2009, 11:54 am EST

That was the most awesome rendition of Ring of Fire I have ever heard. I got goosebumps with Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia and now Adam! His vocal range and power notes are unmatched on Idol this season. I usually don’t take part in the voting, but I did for Adam. If that version of the song were to be released, I’d be in line to buy it.

Ronny | 3/19/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Anyone who dislikes “Ring of Fire” by Adam, don’t have the ability of recognizing genius quality!!

mr | 3/19/2009, 1:42 pm EST

Personally I think Adam looks like he’s wearing a costume – very poser looking. Very well suited for theatre, sure, but I can’t imagine him as a recording artist. Shades of Jeff Buckley? I don’t think so.

Mike | 3/19/2009, 1:54 pm EST

I couldn’t believe all of the comments about Adam’s performance. Like him or hate him, it was by far the most memorable performance on AI in 8 seasons.
You don’t see 100 sites with 10 pages of comments about any of the other contestants.
I thought it was brilliant! Adam is miles ahead of the others.
This season was over when Adam sang Satisfaction in episode 14.

JC | 3/19/2009, 2:40 pm EST

Dilana’s version on Rock Star was way better than Adam’s. She is amazing. Has a Janis jopin flair to her voice.

jlbalmer | 3/19/2009, 3:21 pm EST

For one, you might want to get the contestants names correct… It’s Michael “Sarver” not “Garver”!!!!!!

manuel | 3/19/2009, 4:23 pm EST

It’s inaccurate to call this self-indulgent. This is a more challenging and not readily accessible performance. Obviously the television show is better known as commercial instant-crowd-pleasing fodder for the masses. But then there are those few contestants with an innate drive as artists to explore, experiment, and challenge themselves and others. This performance was provocatively big on mood. It had a complex, captivating, and desirably disturbing impact on those of us with an interest in a broader palette. What is an artist to do in the land of the commercial and quickly consumable demand? By remaining true to himself and not conforming on this country-themed week, Adam succeeded in polarizing the audience. But that is the essence of not just music but all art forms. Generally, people hate or love just about any recording artist. People hate or love 2001: A Space Odyssey. People hate or love ballet…. the classics… the avant-garde. Art with lukewarm likability that may be rated as “okay” or “good” is not worth writing about.

Hope | 3/19/2009, 11:56 pm EST

Adam’s performance was campy and kind of disturbing. He has an amazing vocal range and I would just like to hear him sing something straight. I really disliked his version of the great Johnny Cash’s classic. He is certainly more comfortable on the stage than the other contestants, with the possible exception of Lil Rounds, but then he should be. He has far more professional experience. My favorite performance of the night for pure vocals and true to the genre was Kris Allen. That having been said, I do like Adam, just not this particular performance which I think missed the mark by a mile.

We love Adam in the UK | 3/22/2009, 8:11 pm EST

Love reading the comments on Adam’s performance here. From the UK point of view we were shocked at Simon’s critique of Ring of Fire. He is usually spot on, but this time, he showed how out of touch he is musically. That performance was the perfect vocal and one we will all remember (love or hate it) for a very long time. Adam rules the world!

jeroen | 3/23/2009, 7:41 am EST

Adam Lambert’s screeching-banshee singing ruined a wonderful song that Miss June Carter Cash wrote for Johnny Cash. The profound love emoted in this tune lies in its simpilicty. Yes, I support artists’ freedom to interpret songs or “put their stamp on it.” However, Adam is far brom being an artist, and he should have had more class and sense than to ridicule a song by reducing it to cheap, glam-rock theatrics.

Justin Stark | 3/24/2009, 3:08 pm EST

The discussed TV series, above,
is a true load of crap. Fabian,
and The Monkees, we don’t need,
again, in the 21st Century.

They all stink on ice, and they
all belong on skates.

The Host’s BJ reference was apt.

Kirsten | 3/25/2009, 7:32 am EST

This is a singing contest. Adam Lambert is best by far. Best I’ve ever seen on AI and if he doesn’t win because he’s gay, they will lose a lot of viewers. His stage presence is fantastic also.

Jessica | 3/25/2009, 7:39 am EST

Adam is hot.
Best singer Idol has ever had on stage. I could watch him sing for hours. So he’s gay. Big deal!!

Alexandra | 3/26/2009, 4:15 pm EST

Adam is AMAZING & BRILLIANT!
Some stuck up people don’t get that his singing is outrageous. that version of Ring of Fire was unbelievable. Hes a rock star, no doubt. Hes way to good for AI.

Lou | 3/26/2009, 6:09 pm EST

Adam’s performance was so… I don’t even know what to say, it was so good. It sounded like Sisters of Mercy would remake the song just as they did with their own “Temple of Love”. It was sort of gothic middle eastern :)
And his stage presence is amazing! Are the others as interesting to watch?
// all my love to adam

CC7 | 3/27/2009, 4:49 am EST

I understand some people’s comments outraged at Adam’s take on this song. I was born and raised in Argentina where Tango is our music.
When Gotan Project appeared on the scene with immensely talented musicians giving tired tango a twist (and a big one at that!) many people were also outraged.
I believe you have to be open minded enough to allow no comparisons. Adam did not mean to offend anybody or make fun of anything. He was forced to choose a country song and sing it, so he used his creativity and stayed true to himself. Do you have to like it? No. But you cannot deny he’s amazingly talented and unique.
I haven’t heard a range like his in a very, very long time and I’m so glad he decided to take part in AI.
I cannot stop listening to that voice. It just draws me to him.
I guess it took Simon by surprise because I couldn’t actually understand his reaction. It’s as if he was out of touch.
Adam is a mixture of Elvis, Axl and Freddy Mercury with a touch of Jim Morrison. It’s been a long time since someone with huge talent but also with such a magnetic personality came up. I can’t wait to buy his CDs!

TheOBSERVER | 3/27/2009, 4:07 pm EST

I certainly have enjoyed Adam Lambert’s RING OF FIRE. It was the only performance that night that really stood out and definitely the most entertaining.

Those detractors claiming that Adam ridiculed the song must be out of their minds. Even Randy Travis enjoyed his performance that night that he gave a bad face when Simon Cowell made a bad comment which ridiculed Simon himself. And I am sure that he has realized his own mediocrity by now.

And talking strictly about country music, no one really did well that night except maybe for Anoop and Kris who sung their respective pieces in ballad style but earned Simon’s approval.

On the other hand, I really enjoyed reading all the comments here particularly the very few negative ones penned by probably one to maximum three persons. They can’t accept the fact that Adam towered the show for the second time in a row leaving their chosen favourites very far behind the competition. I cannot blame them though, I’d probably feel the same if I’ve gone fanatic. I am happy that I am just a pure admirer of anyone that truly rocks and renders listening pleasure to my ears.

In the entire history of American Idol, no finalist other than Adam earned the number one position for three consecutive weeks (MOTOWN included). No other finalist enjoyed the many news headlines Adam is currently enjoying now.

My two-cent worth!

Kartrine | 3/27/2009, 7:23 pm EST

My prediction is that Adam will not only win on Idol, he will make it big.
I love not knowing what comes next with him and it’s always a surprise.
Loved his Ring of Fire despite what Cowell had to say and this last week, he took my breath away and I am in my 70’s

Kartrine | 3/27/2009, 7:29 pm EST

Strange all these comments about Adam being gay. So what, gay people can’t sing?
Get off your high horses folks.

jimneyjamjibber | 3/28/2009, 5:55 am EST

Has anobody noticed that Adam has taken his image from Garth Brook’s alter ego (and potential career anchor)Steve Gaines?
Grath Brooks turned into Mel Brooks after that seemedlikeagoodideaatthetime moment.

adam | 3/28/2009, 9:06 am EST

OMG that is most awesome performance ever. Completely different from any other interpretation of the song. He is exactly what the music industry needs right now. He is so incredibly versatile and a super ridiculous talent the likes of which we haven’t seen in maybe 2000 years ? Now I worry that if he wins his identity and creativity will be compromised and that would be a real shame. Awesome dude. Simply awesome. I wish I could buy all the songs he’s done so far including that brilliant “What’s Going On” I recently saw on Youtube. Where the hell has he been ? We’ve been waiting for him! I fell into Adam’s ring of fire lol

This playa | 3/30/2009, 8:44 pm EST

I don’t give 2shiit… Adam is awesome.. He seems to me like a complete BAMPH(my own rendition of the spelling)……. If he is a flamer so what? I will listen to his music on my iPod any day…. Even I the cover has a rainbow striped flag on it.. And i’m a guy and I’m straight but he is hot..

Adam | 4/1/2009, 8:31 pm EST

ADAM = AXL ROSE. Sing “Sweet Child O’ Mine” or “Welcome to the Jungle” and the show is yours (even though it already pretty much is).

Adam brings new hope to gender-bending Glam-rock and pays tribute to his precessors. While he may never completely fill Bowie or Cooper’s shoes, he would look very good in them, and easily convince others just how special those shoes are. For people (and rockers especially) to thumb their noses at Lambert, would be to decry the spirit that is rock, which is to give convention the middle finger.

tamtam | 4/19/2009, 1:09 am EST

it’s sad though, because i don’t believe a RESPECTED rocker could emerge from a talent show–though i hope to be proven wrong.

good job adam…i love u and you’re a special guy…you’re the besr

Bobby | 5/29/2009, 6:09 pm EST

I’ve loved country music all my life and I absolutely LOVED Adam’s version of RING OF FIRE. I think as brave and ground breaking as Johnny Cash was, he’d love it too.

English Prof | 6/2/2009, 3:29 am EST

Adam Lambert has a unique voice we have not heard the likes of since a young Mick Jagger. His sound has the mesmerizing quality of a young Lou Reed. Let the man sing and forget the rest of the crap. Jew/Christian, Redhead/Brunet…just let the man sing and enjoy his talent.

aaalzee | 6/2/2009, 12:06 pm EST

Adam is absolutely mesmerizing and tantalizing. I think he is mixture of Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Queen, David Bowie, Elvis, Prince, Axl Rose, and Nine Inch Nails all in one. Michael Jackson who I adore to death and Queen have been cited as his inspiration, which shines through. I am so impressed he can nail Rock, Soul, R&B, Country, Retro, Pop, Punk so well and add his own little twist. Adam is uniquely refreshing and brings pure excitement back to the music industry which was totally lacking before. And I personally don’t think we have seen an universally incredible break-out artist since Michael Jackson and Madonna, maybe Nirvana, but that’s about it. Everyone else, Usher, JT, Britney (as much as I like them) are really just mainstream copycats – but Adam takes the iconic influences to another level, another world. I Love You Adam!!!!

Jo | 6/3/2009, 2:14 am EST

I grew up with Johnny Cash’s music – my dad, who’s from the South, has been a fan of his for 50 yrs. I think Mr. Cash would’ve thought Adam’s Ring of Fire was great. Mr. Cash was never a prude or a square, especially went it came to music or who he supported.

Linda | 6/7/2009, 12:39 am EST

If LIBERACE could do it, so can Adam!

If Liberace and Elvis had a kid it would be Adam Lambert!

Carrie | 6/7/2009, 10:48 am EST

Loved Adam’s performance! This was the BEST EVER on American Idol!!! We are star struck my Adam and can’t wait to buy his CD!!!

Carrie | 6/7/2009, 10:49 am EST

Adam is a musical genius!!!

Carrie | 6/7/2009, 10:50 am EST

Johnny Cash would have LOVED this rendition of his song! In his latter years, Johnny sang with many rock singers, and would be so proud of Adam!!
