American Idol — the show that will honor itself with trading cards (we kid you not) — honored country music last night, bringing in Randy Travis to teach the kids a few things about getting to the Grand Ole Opry. Lesson one: dudes in nail polish are not welcome. And that’s about as far as the lessons went. Whoever gets through elimination will be on the Idol Summer Tour, so prepare to see a lot of Anoop Desai, Matt Giraud and Kris Allen. But before we get to the rankings …
• Adam Lambert’s “Ring of Fire”: Discuss.
As soon as last week’s star pulled a David Cook and announced he’d elected to sing Johnny Cash’s classic “Ring of Fire” but “I found a different version, it has this Middle Eastern flair” we knew we were in for something major. We didn’t expect a slithering and yowling performance that would pull comparisons to Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” (nice one, Paula Abdul!) and “Nine Inch Nails doing a country song” (less believable, but good try, Randy Jackson!). “The fire, the Egyptian thing, all a little strange,” said Kara DioGuardi, who added, “It left me confused and sort of happy.” And fulfilling the episode’s Tayor Hicks Bashing Quota, Ryan Seacrest noted, “We’ve come a long way since Taylor Hicks stood right here.” Rock Daily’s take: it was certainly interesting, but it wasn’t wise.
Ones to Watch:
• Anoop Desai turned Willie Nelson’s “You Are Always on My Mind” into a slick R&B ballad that transformed him from zero to hero, per Simon Cowell, who was probably just waiting for the moment to whip out that line.
• Kris Allen’s parents rather than his wife were in the crowd cheering him on (perhaps he heeded Simon’s advice? Update: Commenters say wife was there.), and they had reason to smile: The judges adored the “tender moments from my dog, Kris.” Frankly, he reminded us of a post-pubescent David Archuleta. Archie, there’s still hope!
• Megan Joy (formerly Corkrey)’s cork-dance was a little obscene in that chest-hugging dress. But all the judges went bonkers with praise for getting through “I Go Walking After Midnight” so well with the flu.
• Matt Giraud tackled Carrie Underwood’s “So Small” and earned lots of judge love. If piercing through people’s hearts is a good thing, then what Paula said was actually praise.
Meh:
• The judges were split on Danny Gokey’s “Jesus Take the Wheel.” This guy works in a church, so if he can’t score with a Jesus song, we’re not sure what’s going to work.
• Allison Iraheta’s Patti Loveless cover was precocious or dope, depending on which judge you ask. Our vote: dopish.
Ones to Wipe From Your Memory With Bleach:
• Alexis Grace seriously butchered the phrasing on a true classic, “Jolene.” Jack White should slap the pink out of your hair for that one, Alexis.
• Michael Sarver was upstaged by his harmonica player during his Garth Brooks cover, then tried to argue his way out of negative comments with “If we were all perfect, we wouldn’t need this show.” Next!
Thanks for the Memories:
• Lil Rounds didn’t feel comfortable, says Randy, who was just keeping it real.
• Scott MacIntrye accompanied himself on piano for his Martina McBride song, and got criticized by Paula, who called the instrument a crutch. If you thought that was offensive, Simon added that Scott’s songs are doing a little of that, making the “going over my head” motion. Have you two learned nothing from Ryan Seacrest’s High-Five of Doom?
