Fricke’s Picks: Bill Bruford’s Drummer’s View

3/17/09, 1:06 pm EST

The Autobiography: Yes, King Crimson, Earthworks, and More (Jawbone Press), by the English drummer Bill Bruford, is a wandering but frequently hilarious recounting of his long life in progressive rock and jazz, surviving, among other things, early van rides with Yes and the eccentricities of Crimson’s ruling “magus,” guitarist Robert Fripp. Bruford also defends U.K. prog-rock without oversentiment (”the vital expression of a bohemian, middle-class intelligentsia”) and, defying every drummer joke you’ve ever heard, writes successfully from inside the music, as in this description of the gamelan–guitar sound of the early-Eighties Crimson: “A good performance… was like making circles in the air with a feather duster.” I wish I’d written that.

Bill is definitely one of my fave drummers of all time. Too bad he’s retired from live work…

Bill’s book is not for “Drum Whores” so please do not expect drum or even celebrity BS!
Perfect book from an overly cynical mind. Bill writes flawlessly as he plays! He looks on America with love / hate and it appears he wants us to know the socio/political/socialogial causality of Progressive music in each chapter. He is a Brilliant writter but come-on, and add a little nit more on some specific sessions. AND Screw Robert Fripp! I would NEVER grovel and write that letter to RE-join KC! More info as to why he had to surrender royalties to Alan White? One sentence?
Anyway great book! so BUY it!

I’ll join the chorus — this is a tremendous book by a musician who, I daresay, turns a phrase as well as a paradiddle. Not enough behind the scenes muck, but he’s English, wot? A thoroughly enjoyable read, comprehesible event to bass players. ;)
