Trent Reznor Tells Fans “Don’t Buy From Scalpers,” Criticizes Secondary Ticket Market

With tickets for the upcoming Nine Inch Nails tour with Jane’s Addiction set to go on sale to the public on March 20th, Trent Reznor took to the NIN forum to map out his thoughts on the secondary ticketing market, or “scalping” as it used to be called when the practice was illegal. As Rock Daily reported last week, many artists often keep the best seats in a venue and sell them on the secondary ticket market for a huge profit. Trent Reznor is not one of those artists, as “it’s not something we morally feel is the right thing to do,” Reznor writes.

“There are some people who would be willing to pay $1,000 and up to be in the best seats for various shows, but MOST acts in the rock/pop world don’t want to come off as greedy pricks asking that much, even though the market says its value is that high. The acts know this, the venue knows this, the promoters know this, the ticketing company knows this and the scalpers really know this,” Reznor says. Nine Inch Nails get 10 percent of seats in an amphitheatre for themselves. Usually they’re the best seats in the venue, but rather than pass them on to a re-seller to make a huge profit, they offer them to the fans in a presale, taking measures to ensure buyers don’t turn around and profit off the tickets.

“We limit the amount you can buy, we print your name on the tickets and we have our own person let you in a separate entrance where we check your ID to match the ticket,” Reznor writes, arguing that the entire secondary ticket market could be eradicated by following a similar protocol for all tickets. “The ultimate way to hurt scalpers is to not support them. Leave them holding the merchandise,” Reznor tells his fans, “Don’t buy from scalpers.”

While it might seem hypocritical for Reznor to criticize Ticketmaster’s role in the secondary ticket market and then align the band with concert giant Live Nation’s venues for the actual tour, Reznor explains, “I fully realize by playing those venues we are getting into bed with all these guys. I’ve learned to choose my fights and at this point in time it would be logistically too difficult to attempt to circumvent the venues/promoter/ticketing infrastructure already in place for this type of tour.” Still, Reznor told fans to be leery of a potential Live Nation/Ticketmaster merger, as “they’ll move to an auction or market-based pricing scheme — which will simply mean it will cost a lot more to get a good seat for a hot show. They will simply BECOME the scalper, eliminating them from the mix.” Presale tickets for the NIN/Jane’s tour went on sale this morning.

Trent thinks he’s being a hero, when in fact he’s being a total dick to his fans.

What happens to the fan who bought tickets to the NIN show, and then gets sick and can no longer attend? Tickets are non-refundable, and since Trent put all the bullshit rules in place, the fan can’t even sell them (even at cost!) and get his money back.

Who fucking sick can you get that you can’t spend two hours at a rock show?

leo3375 | 3/16/2009, 2:01 pm EST

Anonymous, the NIN.com forum and Echoing the Sound both have systems in place that allow their members to swap tickets or resell them at face value ONLY! For pre-sales, the reseller has to notify the ticketing agent or the NIN representative at the show about who purchased the tickets. In the case of the latter, the buyer has to have the original purchaser’s name as a way to vouch for them. It’s a win-win that ensures that an ill fan is able to recoup most of the ticket cost and someone who wanted to go to the show can get in.

Trent Reznor IS a fucking scalper.

In addition to the regular price tickets, most of the shows on this new tour, are going to have special ‘VIP packages’, with tickets ranging from $200-$250, plus fees.

Total hypocrite!

Ana Yorke | 3/16/2009, 8:29 pm EST

You people who are dissing Trent obviously have no idea whatsoever what you are talking about. Every single thing you’ve written about him manipulating the ticket costs and refunds is absolutely untrue. Simply go to nin.com if you want to see what a real musician is about, and how someone can work WITH the fans even though he is forced to “sleep with the enemy” just to enable the fans to attend his concerts.

Thanks for the article!

Barley | 3/16/2009, 10:39 pm EST

Hey troll, there aren’t any VIP packages. If anyone was VIP they would get in for free.

Anonymous | 3/16/2009, 10:58 pm EST

All the LiveNation Ticketing purchase pages for this tour, advertise VIP seats, which range from $209 to $249.

They would not be able to do so without Trent’s approval.

Actually, Anonymous, you’d be dead wrong.

“Nine Inch Nails get 10 percent of seats in an amphitheatre for themselves. If you read the whole thing, you’d know that LiveNation/TicketMaster can, actually, do whatever the hell they want to for any tickets, including bundling them into VIP things which they turn around and sell at higher prices. The bands have absolutely nothing to do with that.

But, as Bill Hicks once said, “I’m a reader.” Try reading before your next trolling post. You might have something interesting to say, although I have to confess, I’m skeptical.

It’s harder and harder to beat the scalpers at their own game, and secondary ticket sales should never have been allowed. You can try and boycott a scalper, but there is almost always someone willing to pay whatever the market will bear.

Dude, you are fucking clueless. I am in the ticketing industry, and those packages are strictly decided by the artist and their management. LiveNation does not set the prices. LiveNation does not have the right to sell packages, without the express approval by the artist and management.

Anonymous | 3/17/2009, 9:56 am EST

Actually, Devinoch, you’re the one who’s dead wrong.

Yes, Nine Inch Nails gets 10% of the overall venue capacity for their fanclub allotment, which NIN sell in whatever manner they choose. (ie, on their own ticketing site, and with their own setup, price and rules.)

But that does NOT mean that LiveNation has the authority to sell the remaining 90% of the overall tickets, at whatever price LiveNation wants. LiveNation does NOT have the right to sell VIP packages, without the full approval of Artist and their Management.

LiveNation is selling VIP packages at $209 to $249, and Trent Reznor approved it. Therefore, in a nutshell, Trent Reznor is scalping his own tickets.

cc | 3/17/2009, 11:24 am EST

Actually, tickets can be claimed by having the original receipt from the buyer. I’ve done it. I appreciate any artist willing to circumvent the greedy Ticketmaster and Live Nation machine. It’s not perfect but better than the alternatives.

Schirm | 3/17/2009, 2:51 pm EST

It’s insane. I recently bought Depeche Mode tickets and in the first 20 seconds the best seats in the house were section 200?

Totally whacked! It sucks that artists are allowing the prices to get jacked up so much. The thing that I don’t understand is what happens to all the seats that don’t sell? There has to be a lot because I don’t know anyone who is willing to pay the crazy prices that some of these places like Stub Hub are asking… It really pisses me off!

who is this guy
some whiny NIN singer??
EWWWWWWWWWWWWW
he sucks

TRENT "RAZ"NOR | 3/18/2009, 7:18 am EST

It seems that lately all Trent Reznor does is complain, or razz somebody. Not gettin’ any Rez??? Wife, girlfriend or boyfriend re-negging on the booty call? Where have YOU been lately? Why don’t you go into your studio and do something productive instead of putting all your time and energy into complaining…grow up!

Anonymous77 | 3/18/2009, 11:29 pm EST

Just bought tickets to one of their summer shows. Can’t wait to go. As far as scalper’s go try to avoid them if you can. But say someone gets sick and you are stuck with a ticket that you paid for and last min you try and sell it when you go to the concert. That should be ok and that person should not be called a scalper. Things like that happen all the time to true fans plus you can tell if it is just a fan selling a ticket rather then a scalper selling one. On a side note Tickets for this tour are a lot of money. Thats just not cool!

Anonymous | 3/20/2009, 3:34 pm EST

I bought a presale ticket for $75, and a scalping website is now selling seats in my row for over $540! Oh, and TRENT “RAZ”NOR, I wouldn’t complain about not working after two FREE albums and their subsequent tours with groundbreaking visuals.

megan | 9/18/2009, 4:02 pm EST

scalping is wrong! i agree with trent! he is not “complaining”. I dont even know how you people even think Trent sounds like hes “complaining”. He speaks the truth!
