The Dead, Bob Dylan, String Cheese Incident and Willie Nelson will headline the second annual Rothbury Festival, July 2nd-5th at Michigan’s Double JJ Ranch. Other performers attending the eco-friendly, jam band-heavy festival include the Black Crowes, the Hold Steady, Govt. Mule, STS9, Zappa Plays Zappa, Girl Talk and the pairing of Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and Nas. Tickets for the fest go on sale Friday, March 20th.

Like last year, Rothbury is taking extra precautions to ensure their festival is as “green” as possible. The event is “committed to producing a near zero-waste concert,” per a press release, hosting a “Think Tank” to discuss the new green economy, using compostables instead of disposables and even offering a “Green Ticket” option. Rothbury is also continuing to carve its niche as the go-to jam band festival as well, giving Bonnaroo a run for its money. Last year’s Rothbury featured performances by Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer and a near-Phish reunion that foreshadowed their eventual comeback. i really hope the roo picks up mstrkrft

lavric | 3/16/2009, 12:45 pm EST

damian, rebelution, dylan, matis, john butler……. the only thing that will confirm my trip to roth with be john mayer

HotFootMcCook | 3/16/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Hmmmmm…I’m not sure if this beats ‘Roo…I’m still undecided.

wookies | 3/16/2009, 2:21 pm EST

STS9 SUCKS!!! It’s just Flashing Lights and Loud, but Easy songs. GET OVER IT, HIPPIES!!

6 Interesting Acts | 3/16/2009, 2:48 pm EST

BSS, King Sunny, Son Volt, Man Man, Ani and Toubab. Hardly a draw folks.

chuck t | 3/16/2009, 3:09 pm EST

mstrkrft was at roo last year, as were a lot of these bands. roo is cheaper than roth and has a better, more diverse line up.

john | 3/16/2009, 3:27 pm EST

I can’t believe that they think this would hold a candle to Bonnaroo. . Very disappointing.

AJax | 3/16/2009, 3:32 pm EST

A bit too jammy for my tastes. Dylan and STS9 appear to be the only attraction for me. Wilco, Elvis Costello, Andrew Bird, Animal Collective at Bonnaroo. Thats got my vote at the moment.

Anthony | 3/16/2009, 3:43 pm EST

As a Vet of Roo and Roth, ROTHBURY BLOWS ROO OUT OF THE WATER. Really, it’s worth the extra money, as well as, without Phish, Bonnaroo is the same bad lineup as last year. BURY BURY BURY!!!!

Don | 3/16/2009, 5:29 pm EST

Fuckin Cheese thats so dope

Parker | 3/16/2009, 8:04 pm EST

I’m going to the Roo, but Rothbury’s lineup is more even. The Roo is top heavy. Jackie Green is going to melt faces at Rothbury. Check him out.

sam512 | 3/16/2009, 10:17 pm EST

fuck you wookies sts9 has some crazy talent on board…sound tribe sector nine is the best live band on tour right now

Anonymous | 3/16/2009, 11:22 pm EST

So psyched that Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad is on the Rothbury lineup!

Seriously amazing band from upstate NY.

JD | 3/16/2009, 11:35 pm EST

It doesn’t beat Roo, but it’s a pretty good lineup nonetheless

ryan | 3/17/2009, 7:49 am EST

STRING CHEESE IS BACK

HELL YEA good fest

drewzer | 3/17/2009, 11:05 am EST

ive been to 3 roos’ and the rothbury. last year at bury was the best festy i ever went to, but i am extremely dissapointed in this years lineup. I love the dead, but dylan is old and so is willie nelson. if your going to see them so u can say i saw them great, but ive seen both of them and they are nowhere near what any of you are going to want when your raging at a festival. the other bands like lyrics born and crowes look good, but for energy i think roo has it this year. thats where im going and really didn’t want to. i held out for the rothbury lineup and they kind of let us all down a bit. either way be safe and have fun.

drewzer | 3/17/2009, 11:06 am EST

stupid triple post. sorry guys.

Bob Dylan Jr. | 3/17/2009, 11:37 am EST

I couldn’t disagree more about Bob Dylan, I’ve seen him live 3 times in the past few years and he’s always incredible, he may sing differently and have less vocal range, but his enigmatic croaking is better than the soaring vocals of any frontman i can think of…plus his band is incredible, probably a better band than the Grateful Dead…

LOL@BOBDYLANJR | 3/17/2009, 6:58 pm EST

The Dead=10,000 times a better live act than Bob Dylan, even without Jerry. Sorry bros.

waxer | 3/22/2009, 6:12 pm EST

look at bonaroos first year lineup and look at rothburys first year lineup
practically idenitical
then look at year two
same thing
almost mirrored
so give rothbury time to grow
in two more years it will surpas the decling roo and overtake the top spot on summer festivals.

rothbury is amazing!

Laura | 3/24/2009, 5:47 am EST

I for one am really happy about this lineup. Roo gave up on a true jamband lineup by it’s 4th year. Last year Rothbury didn’t have it either. But this year…perfect.
Nice we have so many festivals to choose from, there’s one with the right lineup for almost everyone.

btw, why so mean wookies?

nativejamerican | 3/30/2009, 1:49 am EST

my top picks from the line up:

1. sound tribe sector 9
2. cheese
3. disco biscuits
4. EOTO
5. the dead
6. yonder mountain
7. railroad earth

hobbit | 4/1/2009, 11:38 pm EST

roo looks like shit this year minus phish…roth on the other hand is looking fuckin awesome… I really wish I didnt already pay for my roo ticket.

linds3452 | 4/6/2009, 5:39 am EST

either way….both lineups are sick…and I’ve been to roo and rothbury, but let’s just say rothbury is so much better based on the shade factor alone….its to damn hot at roo!! I need a tree to chill under every once in a while :)

candyjobird | 4/16/2009, 3:08 pm EST

The only thing bringing me back to Roo is Phish. 92% of the bands on the list I could care less about. They blew their budget on headliners and don’t have the usually second stage acts I like to see. Roth has a lot more of the smaller acts that I can’t wait to check out for the first time! Here’s to a great summer either way-I got my tickets to both!

Anthony | 4/27/2009, 12:22 pm EST

Been to both, and I must say, ROTHBURY KILLS BONNAROO. Bonnaroo went from a great music festival to an aweful frat party. Take Phish off the lineup, and Roo is worse than last year.

Kack | 5/8/2009, 3:07 am EST

Music’s all about what YOU enjoy, personally as a an ‘05, ‘06 roo vet and roth in 08 I must say the atmosphere at roth was waaay better, that makes a diff in your experience and I say go see phish on tour, not at roo. ROTHBURY: DEAD, DYLAN, CHEESE, BISCO, DAMAIN & NAS, YONDER, BLACK CROWES, BACK DOOR SLAM, TOOTS & THE MAYTALS, GIANT PANDA, LES CLAYPOOL. WOW!!! OMG. RIDICULOUS!

jimmyleftfoot | 5/14/2009, 8:39 pm EST

All I can say is it sounds like a great summer, the deads last shows sound great and can’t wait to see some new acts…see you at rothbury

TOA~ | 6/25/2009, 12:27 pm EST

GIANT PANDA!! They are a must see, i’ve caught them all over WNY at their local shows, and at the Roo under baloon 3! Do what you must to see this crew, they will be HUGE in 2yrs…you have my word…god speed!

PS: Rothbury > Roo

Karl 45 | 7/1/2009, 3:51 pm EST

Who would win in a fist fight, phish or cheese?
