Talk Show Flashback: Soundgarden. Seattle. 1989.

3/13/09, 4:51 pm EST

Let’s take a trip back to 1989 Seattle with Soundgarden. Trent Reznor might argue that the above video is why he felt “embarrassed” after hearing Chris Cornell’s new, Timbaland-produced Scream, as once upon a time Cornell’s Soundgarden were a bunch of hard-to-interview, long-haired rockers who liked to wear Nirvana shirts and make sweaty, kick-ass music. Before Superunknown, the band just hoped they’d making it bigger than Loverboy and Mr. Mister. “I recognize myself foremost as a visionary,” 1989 Cornell says.

What makes this Flashback extra-grungy is the interviewer, Nirvana guitarist Jason Everman, who is credited with playing on that band’s debut Bleach, even though he allegedly just helped fund the recording. For further reminder of how awesome Soundgarden was, check out their performance of “Birth Ritual” from Singles after the jump.

GOD I MISS THOSE DAYS. THAT WAS THE BEST DECADE OF ALL TIME – 1988 – 1997 [THE DAY JEFF BUCKLEY DROWNED AND SOUNDGARDEN DISBANDED I KNEW IT WAS OVER. I GUESS IT WAS JUST TOO GOOD TO LAST.] AS REZNOR SAIS ON ONE SONG: “THIS ISN`T MEANT TO LAST – THIS IS FOR! RIGHT! NOW!”

1994 is when it ended. Every corporate music machine had to cash in on K.C.’s death.

I always did prefer Yamamoto/Everman .Mark Arm should give Jason Everman a phonecall for a new classic subpop album. The new album should be like a beefsteak with a whiff of Tad!!!!
