Exclusive Premiere: Neil Young’s Video for “Light a Candle”

3/13/09, 3:49 pm EST

Click above to check out Neil Young’s new video for “Light a Candle,” which Rolling Stone is pleased to bring you exclusively. In the clip, Young is wearing a T-shirt that says “The 2nd Big Bang. World Wide Web. Born From High Energy Physics.” In the past few years Young’s made much use of the Web, from blogging about his LincVolt electric car project to posting thousands of fan-made protest songs to creating super shoe-string budget music videos. This one — the second video from the forthcoming Fork In The Road — features Young and his wife Pegi sitting in front of an old school camper.

The track was a regular part of Young’s 2008 world tour and reflects his optimism that his car project can eliminate roadside refueling and change the world. It’s the quietest song Fork In The Road, a concept album about LincVolt that was recorded with his touring band. Other tracks include “Off The Road,” “Hit The Road,” “Get Behind The Wheel” and “Fuel Line.” As for the odd shirt, a Google search reveals that it’s the name of a 1998 paper written by Stanford Professor Bebo White.

For much more on Fork in the Road, don’t miss our Spring Album Preview, hitting newsstands next week in our next issue.

3rd video, actually. He posted a video for Johnny Magic a little while ago.

Thanks for posting the video.

I loved Neil all my life, even performed his songs, but he’s put God on the back burner just like Rolling Stone said Bob Dylan did. With one exception, Bob Dylan is Saved.
There was no first Big Bang…sorry.
I had hope for Him, but now I don’t know.

Neils usual penchant for understatement remains unphased….

When Neil went in to the trailer, I was expecting it to start rocking. Different kind of video I guess.

David | 3/17/2009, 12:51 am EST

Awesome song.

@ McCraven | 3/17/2009, 10:26 am EST

There’s a lot more evidence supporting the big bang theory than evidence supporting your religion, you moron.

darth pop tart | 3/17/2009, 10:40 am EST

cheers, Neil.

boatman | 3/17/2009, 12:51 pm EST

The sooner we all put God on the back burner the better off we’ll all be.
I’m relieved Dylan finally put it behind him. I don’t think Neil ever fell for that garbage.

WBKM.org | 3/19/2009, 10:52 am EST

…leading the way…hopeful, honest and wonderful.

thanks Neil!

Neil will always be Godfather of Granola Rock!

McCraven | 3/20/2009, 3:46 pm EST

Last time I heard the Scientist were leaning toward Creationist belief. Oh by the way I’m not religious, I’m saved. As for Neil, it appears that he is still searching and does not have a Satisfied mind like Dylan sung about. It has been said that you can curse God in front of your peers, but don’t ever do such at the Music Heroes. Does that make sense? Are you living on borrowed land and time?

Neil’s is nature; he is transcendent. I find the video very spiritual. There is hope in the light of the candle, as well as in his song.

Once again, Neil did it to me-have not had the rush since “Down by the River” and “Cowgirl in the Sand”. GO-NEIL!!!
