Jack White Debuts New Band the Dead Weather: A Full Report From Private Nashville Show

White Stripes and Raconteurs frontman Jack White unveiled his two latest projects Wednesday night in his adopted hometown of Nashville: A new downtown office for Third Man Records, the imprint that’s offered his White Stripes and Raconteurs releases, and a new band called the Dead Weather. (Track White’s many guises onstage, onscreen and behind the scenes.)

The new White-designed space for the vinyl-focused Third Man, just down the way from Nashville’s strip of trademark honky-tonks, will house the label office, a vinyl record store, a photo studio/dark room and a rehearsal/performance space. The new band takes White from the front of the stage back behind the drum kit, while the Kills’ Alison Mosshart mostly handles singing duties. The two are joined by White’s fellow Raconteur Jack Lawrence on bass and former touring Raconteur/Queen of the Stone Age Dean Fertita on guitar.

Third Man will release the Dead Weather’s debut LP, Horehound — which White produced — in June, and Wednesday, the band offered some 150 friends and associates (among them, Raconteurs Brendan Benson and Patrick Keeler, the White Stripes’ Meg White and Tennesseans Sheryl Crow and Martina McBride) a preview of both the record and the forthcoming onstage versions, playing a five-song set in the Third Man performance space.

The tracks — a sludgy, bluesy blend of psych-rock guitar, alternately stark and explosive rhythms and Mosshart’s sultry-to-siren vocal — take relatively logical leaps from the members’ other bands, White’s groove-heavy drumming elevating the Dead Weather’s Stripes-esque blues-rock moods and Fertita and Mosshart pulling in atmosphere and disaffected cool, respectively.

The band’s beginnings, White said, trace back to the tail end of the Kills/Raconteurs tour, when he suffered a slipped disc and severe case of bronchitis that threatened to waylay his voice. His band went heavy on co-frontman Brendan Benson’s songs to finish the tour, and brought Mosshart in to take the lead for well-loved White tracks such as “Steady, As She Goes.”

“It reenergized the tour,” White said of his now-bandmate Mosshart’s contributions. The onstage energy quickly blossomed into the new band. “We had one day off in Nashville where [Mosshart] had spent the night and the next day she would fly out,” White said. “So the three of us [White, Mosshart and Lawrence] said, ‘Why don’t we record a 7-inch?’… Dean just happened to be spending the night in one of the ante rooms [in my house].”

“I’d been there for a while…” Fertita countered. That 7-inch grew into Horehound over a 15-day Nashville session that also made time for circus and gun range trips. The album and band certainly beg questions about the future of the members’ other bands, and plans as of yet, White said, are to play shows when the record comes out, and after Mosshart wraps an upcoming, months-long jaunt with the Kills. Beyond that, White said, he’s letting the Dead Weather and Third Man evolve naturally.

“I mean it’s sort of a thing where, when the Raconteurs came out you get so hammered about it — everyone wants to put a label. Is it a side project? Is it a new band? Is it all that jazz?” he said. “I don’t know, man, just pick one of them — whatever you want to call it. The point is: There’s a new institution, there’s a studio, there’s a vinyl record label, there’s a pressing plant a few blocks away… Things can happen very quickly. Music will be in your hands quickly. And that’s the whole point of it.”

Check out the Spring Album Preview in the next issue of Rolling Stone for more on Jack White’s new Dead Weather project and their June release.

Sounds cool, but I could still use another Stripes album.

Yakof Smirnoff | 3/12/2009, 11:35 am EST

Love the Stripes, but I could use another Raconteurs album. The last one was awesome!

Beasthouse | 3/12/2009, 12:14 pm EST

The man is an artist. Let him create his art however he wants. Stripes, Raconteurs or any other band it doesn’t matter. Embrace whatever Jack puts together and enjoy it!

JD | 3/12/2009, 12:28 pm EST

An artist? Good one.

Catherine | 3/12/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Jack is single-handedly resurrecting blues/rock and all it stands for.

heathen2002 | 3/12/2009, 1:04 pm EST

When does this man sleep? Crazy! I’m waiting for another White Stripes album..

Brooks | 3/12/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Awesome! Cannot wait to hear this!

Cloudman | 3/12/2009, 1:46 pm EST

Maybe it’s good that Jack is devoting his time to other bands. The White Stripes sounded pretty bad on Conan’s last episode.

Jungleland2 | 3/12/2009, 1:52 pm EST

Jack – you need Rocksploitation from Atlanta on your label check them out!

Now it’s only a matter of time before Jack White and Josh Homme join forces, causing the world to implode in a wave of awesome prolificacy

steve | 3/12/2009, 4:02 pm EST

any fans of Dean’s previous band; Reigndance?

Re: Donovan | 3/12/2009, 4:03 pm EST

You’re a mindreader. Better yet, get Josh, then get Jimmy, John Paul, and Jason, and blow minds across two generations.

iowa | 3/12/2009, 4:05 pm EST

I think it’s cool how he’s trying to get the music out as fast as possible. He’s an artist, and he’s got ideas bursting out of every orifice of his body (oh yeah.) Nowadays, artists take an average 2 years to release new records. Back in the day, it was 6 months to a year. Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Doors, to just name a few. We need more Black Keys and White Stripes bands out there.

Thiago | 3/12/2009, 4:19 pm EST

I don’t think Jack White and Josh Homme could ever join forces. Half the people on earth would just explode. From awesomeness.

Czikk | 3/12/2009, 4:22 pm EST

great stuff, nearly every project he has taken on has proven to be magic.( i am turning a blind eye to “another way to die”). it will be interesting to see a different lead singer, as well as how Jack will root a band through his drumming.

jrome | 3/12/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Jack was behind the kit in Goober and the Peas. Vinyl vinyl vinyl.

Mitch Norton | 3/12/2009, 4:53 pm EST

Haven’t heard this yet, but “sludgy blues psyche rock” sounds promising, if overly similar to the White Stripes.

YO DAWG ! | 3/12/2009, 5:04 pm EST

Awesome, This man just doesn’t stop. If only more artist were like him, we will be enjoying good music all the time.

hello | 3/12/2009, 5:24 pm EST

jack’s hometown is DETROIT, not nashville.

lobstrocities | 3/12/2009, 6:38 pm EST

Whenever I listen to the White Stripes it reminds me of going for a long run in the sunshine in Tuscon, AZ.

wakin | 3/12/2009, 8:38 pm EST

sorry motor city,
home is now nashville. all the raconteurs live there (even brendan dumped D-town for TN). music city USA, indeed…

Ekim | 3/12/2009, 8:39 pm EST

If u have not heard The Black Keys try them out. Not as good as The White Stripes but better than the Raconteurs.

James | 3/12/2009, 9:09 pm EST

Jack Named #17 on RS list of greatest guitarists so this should be good.

SATAN | 3/12/2009, 9:19 pm EST

John Mayer is also bringing back blues rock, so I wouldn’t call it single handedly

DIEjackDIE! | 3/12/2009, 9:23 pm EST

I hope Jack White and his kids die of cancer! I despise this poser!

tss | 3/12/2009, 9:24 pm EST

claudette | 3/12/2009, 9:58 pm EST

Wow some of you are so angry and mean not sure what that’s about. Jack White is amazing. I cant wait for the album!

CR1ZZ | 3/12/2009, 11:01 pm EST

Ok, I can understand people disliking jack white for being recommended to stand in for Robert Plant in Led-Zeppelin but he is fucking talented. It was Roberts problem, not Jacks, stop thinking Jack wanted to ruin Zeppelin.
White Stripe and Raconteurs both carved up musically, but gotta choose the Stripes anyday. Meg was fucking awesome and they had a unique sound. Interested to see the new stuff with a new band.
Oh I almost forgot, Telvin, I really hope you’ve read a book on how to survive an angry mob trying to destroy you in the most horrible way possible you fucking child mallesting, terrorism supporting, lack of any intellegence fat fuck.

The Intl | 3/13/2009, 12:00 am EST

Yawn, just another rock band. He ain’t no god.

How’s Meg feel about Jacko’s drum role? It’s almost like “here’s how you do it,…”

Wow, a vinyl record store. He’ll probably be as successful as the Apple boutique.

I may sound bitter, and I am from Detroit, but I really don’t care that he left town. It’s turning out that he just isn’t all that anymore. I honestly wish he’d do something huge & great to match all the shit we’ve had to put up with from him.

Pattern Sky | 3/13/2009, 12:16 am EST

“Hang from the Heavens” is undeniably cool, but I was hoping to see the Greenhornes this summer, as they announced they’d recorded an album. It’s as if your name is Jack and you live in Nasville you aren’t allowed to take a break.

merschdersch | 3/13/2009, 12:54 am EST

you guys are a bunch of hosers. jack white is the man. undeniably. listen to consolers of the lonely. go hose yourself dude who said he should have been in the twin towers on 9/11. jack white is a musical genius. coldplay did not deserve to win that grammy. the raconteurs is as rock as it gets. you want posers? listen to all time low or simple plan hosehead. jack white youre my boy. make mad gnarly albums. salute your solution.

uallsuck | 3/13/2009, 1:46 am EST

uallsuck | 3/13/2009, 1:52 am EST

you are all dip shits. that’s all i have to say. yes, don’t get me wrong, i love the white stripes and the raconteurs, but come on!!! jack white is not as talented as most of you give him credit for. all their songs consist of power chords and the same five note patterns on the same wah effect for every song. they have a unique sound, yes, one that i actually really like. but musically, they aren’t that talented. anyone who thinks jack white should have been a fill in for robert plant?? you make me cry. come on. robert plant was one of the most talented vocalists in history who did so much for music and was not only incredible with voice, but proficient on other instruments. jack white is not. and meg? please. she’s worse than ringo. get real, people. R.I.P. blues, punk, and talented musicicans

uallsuck | 3/13/2009, 1:56 am EST

by the way, the black keys are much better. at least they can play their instruments, and without saying: “what the hell’s this thingy???”

Disgusted and appalled | 3/13/2009, 2:04 am EST

I hate every one of you people. I have nothing against the White Stripes, they’re an alright band, they’re a hell of a lot better than a lot of the crap out there. But “Jack is single-handedly resurrecting the blues and everything it stands for “? Come on, the blues never died, it just got unpopular again, and given the idiots that are fans of popular music, I’d say that’s a good thing. Keeping the blues alive if you will, John Mayer Trio, Joe Bonnamasa, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Popa Chubby, etc. Lets not forget the people that are STILL around when blues was popular. BB King, Buddy Guy, Alvin Lee, Page, Plant, Jones, Clapton, Santana, way too many to list. Jack is an alright singer/guitarist, despite the fact that when he doesn’t sound like a woman he’s blatantly trying to sound like Plant. Meg White could possibly someday be an OK drummer, if she’d learn more than one beat. And to compare them to the Black Keys? Yeah, they’re the same in the fact that it’s a guitarist and a drummer, it stops there. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney are phenomenal musicians that produce a sound so huge that a bassist isn’t necessary, instead of compensating with an octave down pedal (CoughcoughJACKcough) Scuse’ me, tickle in my throat. I could go on for hours about the jackassary on this message board, but I have better things to do than bitch on a forum. Like, listening to real music. Please excuse me, Ten Years After is calling. (If you’ve never heard of them, you make me sick and have no business commenting on music.

A. King | 3/13/2009, 4:58 am EST

I’m all in for anything Jack White does in music. Wish they were all as good. The Stripes changed my life and have been my favorite live, the Raconteurs kick ass too.seen en both 4 x. I’ll be looking to see the “Dead Weather” as soon as I can. Jack is doing Allison a big favor…he must like her.

A. King | 3/13/2009, 5:03 am EST

#17 on R.S. BEST GUITARIST’S OF ALL TIME!! HE HAS BARELY GOTTEN STARTED! Eventually he’ll be #1 Jack kicks ASS!

A. King | 3/13/2009, 5:11 am EST

Everybody from Meg to Brendon and many more are just riding on Jack’s coattails. Life is alway’s genius surrounded by mediocrate. This is no exception, however he is still only human. It takes all of ‘em to make it all work. Anyone of them could be replaced, except Jack.

Time Will Tell | 3/13/2009, 5:23 am EST

People like Telvin and have no clue about rock music. If you can’t even respect all the things Jack White has done for music and blues, go back to listening to NickelbackMayorPlay and stay off the subjects of great rock music.

iLly | 3/13/2009, 5:42 am EST

Wow. I love Jack and the girl from the Kills. This should be a nice project.

Typical D-Town love, you’re probably in a faltering band that missed out on its piece of the pie. Remember, it wasn’t Detroit that made him famous, the city produced him, but he don’t owe you, coffee house boy.

The Red Stripes | 3/13/2009, 9:54 am EST

No disrespect to Mr. White, who is pretty much a god among men, but why not just make a solo album? Raconteurs’ first album was great, but all this “supergroup” hype is a bit much. For a man not known for modesty, I don’t get why he doesn’t just give himself star billing.

BB | 3/13/2009, 10:05 am EST

I’m lovin hang u from the heavens and the gary numan cover!

I thought it read JACK WHITE DEAD

I got happy for a sec !

encyclopediag | 3/13/2009, 11:33 am EST

this is getting way to chirpy, for the dude who thinks the black keys are something special, have you listened to them, they exist because of the white stripes, the name is even ripped off… not that i don’t like them or anything, they’re unreal but as some of these fine people have said… jack is god… eight full lengths between two bands and not a weak song, that’s saying something… i’m sure this project will b just as spectacular… and for those who doubt his saviour status… he is bringing blues and quality rock back into the spotlight, he plays the guitar like a mo-fuc*er and he writes brilliantly… do not doubt… and shit most of the people commenting on this shouldn’t b at each other, start ripping on some god damn nickleback fans for a change, kill pop music

Josh from Ohio | 3/13/2009, 12:02 pm EST

Given Jack’s obsession with the number three, it’s no surprise he needs three bands to channel his creativity. Black Keys / White Stripes comparisons are about as flimsy as Beatles / Stones comparisons. Completely different aesthetic.

Anonymous | 3/13/2009, 12:02 pm EST

Jack on drums? Dudes playin’ is off the Mf’in hook. LIsten to that break and tell me he can’t throw down on the skins! Unreal, the dude is badass. If he can write a riff that can get 100.000 soccer fans chanting said riff, I think you’ve made a positive mark.

toldstoo | 3/13/2009, 12:07 pm EST

” incredible with voice, but proficient on other instruments. jack white is not”

Have you even listened to this track, whiney?

artificialred | 3/13/2009, 12:39 pm EST

Jack White is a virtuoso for sure. He brings a lot of talent to what he does, no matter what it is. Definitely one of the coolest musicians going today!!!!

Rick | 3/13/2009, 12:42 pm EST

Sometimes I get the feeling that if Jack White had not made it big, everyone who now hates him would be telling me that I “have to listen to this band, The White Stripes. They’re amazing.” But no, The White Stripes got famous, so now contrarians feel the need to take Jack down a peg. It’s like my friend who hates Nirvana. I get it. Everyone likes to feel different.

Anonymous | 3/13/2009, 4:03 pm EST

Jack white resurrecting the blues? you’re right in saying that it never went a way. He is however helping to re-invent it. The way Zep did or Hendrix or any other great musician. Mayer, Trucks…they’re just playing stuff that has already been played.
White Stripes, Raconteurs, The Dead Weather are doing exactly what all the great blues artists of the past are doing…taking something simple and making it huge.
uhm…Brendon Benson is the man.

WhyCouldntYouPutTheBunnyBackIn | 3/13/2009, 4:15 pm EST

This bands debut single is pretty tasty but i’m not quite feeling it like i thought i would. Perhaps they would have been better just sticking to The Raconteurs and The Kills, both of which released GREAT albums last year.

Drewdog21 | 3/13/2009, 5:24 pm EST

Jack, Dave Grohl and Damon Albarn should get together and do an album with Danger Mouse. Call the band The Sleepwalkers–’cause none of those 4 guys ever sleep!

thelonious | 3/13/2009, 5:35 pm EST

Jack White fans. I get it. You like Jack White, but don’t shove it everyone’s face, ie. “Jack White is the man. Jack White is a genius. Best guitarist ever. Re-invented the blues.”

Get a brain.

Jack White loves Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page respects him… all I need

Davis | 3/13/2009, 6:03 pm EST

This Jack White side project is not as good as Cornell’s new solo album. White should have recorded a solo album. The new Dead Weather songs sound boring.

Marky | 3/13/2009, 7:38 pm EST

Holy Hell, there are too many morons with too much to say on this post. You need to get back to journalistic content RS, user content is often the ramblings of dumb, ill-informed teenagers, as illustrated here.

Jack White is a musical genius – end of story. King Midas (the 3rd), give us all you got!

Stone Zeppelin | 3/13/2009, 8:24 pm EST

THAT was the best comment here! Josh Homme, Page, Jones, Bonham. Would have been monumental.

How can you honestly say that you wish Jack White would die?!
That is absolutely outrageous, you do not know him, so how could you even think such terrible things?!
What if somebody wished that on you…horrible people.{No offense or anything} Psh.

So, how do you pronounce CARIBBEAN?

fuckhead | 3/13/2009, 10:34 pm EST

Jack white is a great guitarist.. not that great when it comes to writing lyrics or singing..but he does play a mean guitar. He is making blues popular again..and fuck all of you who wishes he’d die. Why? cause the guy is young and old fat ass robert plant is gonna kick the bucket soon.

P.T. | 3/13/2009, 11:43 pm EST

Hey Mr. R.I.P. down below—do you harbor a secret homoerotic crush on Mr. White or something? And, you got his birth year way wrong, and you can’t spell, either. Sorry your life sucks.

Kelsey | 3/13/2009, 11:44 pm EST

for some reason this debate is really heated. if you don’t like jack white then go to another internet page for a band you DO like and say something positive.

CR1ZZ | 3/14/2009, 4:18 am EST

When Robert Plant dies it’ll be the saddest rock death since George Harrison. Don’t be a prick.
And to the guy who said Clapton is bullshit, you’re on crack. Eric Clapton kicks ass when it comes to guitar, I have seen him live and I’ve seen Jack white live, with the white stripes by the way, and they were both epic, in two VERY DIFFERENT WAYS.Eric=slow sit down music
Jack White=fast clap-you’re-hands/stomp-you’re -feet music.

Both great. Telvin fuck yourself.

= ) | 3/14/2009, 4:16 pm EST

Clapton was a stud in cream so dont go saying he stinks. George harrisons death was rough! But nothing hurt as much as John Lennons. RIP guys. I hope the rest of the rockstars have a few years left on them!

every time I listen to a new Jack White song/project, im a little scared. Scared because im afraid this particular piece of work will be the beginning of his decline. But so far, he has only gotten better and better, and with this new project, it looks like he will never age or fail to produce great work. Anyone who does not like his work has either not listened to most of his songs, or heard these songs live.

Carlos Gradim | 3/19/2009, 3:44 pm EST

Can´t wait for the June release of “Horehound”, but I´m with the ones who claim good use for a new Stripes album before. No comment deserved by people who dare speak so unrespectfully of Eric “God”. And Led Zeppelin is THE greatest band ever (as is Jimmy Page among human guitarists – the other Jimi is beyond human!), hands down, hence Jack W´s admiration for them. Jack W is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and an extremely gifted all-round artist. End of fuss.

Carlos Gradim | 3/19/2009, 3:58 pm EST

By the way: how awesome to find another Ten Years After fan in here after so long!!!!! Hey, most people writing out of hatred below have never even heard of the great Alvin Lee, so no point in wasting any time responding to their grumblings.

rubenzep | 3/23/2009, 7:59 am EST

Great new band. I like jack for doing this. I think it’s because of the alicia keys song. That was the first time in years he drummed on a record and that’s when he felt he want to drum again. Hope they will tour Europe.

And by the way, Ian Montone, manager of the white stripes said that there is a new stripes album coming up.

And what about that project with Bob Dylan Jack was working on? He really is a busy man I guess, one of the most talented and productive people in the media business.

Keep up the good work, Jack.

I am so looking forward to Jack’s next project, although it will be odd to see him not being a front man. He’s got more charisma than any performer I’ve ever seen. I want him upfront.

okay, i LOVE the white stripes and i like the racontears. but the dead weather? off to a shaky start, jack. hang you from the heavens seems like a track on an album i would appreciate, but quickly forget.
please, please, PLEASE do not let this overshadow the stripes!
jack’s a genius, though, so i’m glad for any excuse for him to arrive back on the musical scene.

BigWood9 | 4/2/2009, 2:15 pm EST

I began with Doo Wop and Rock a Billy! So when Led Zepplin arrived on the scene it was like adding another previously unseen color to the spectrum of light. You have no idea of music before Rock ‘n Roll. Count your blessing.
As for Jack white… Very, very impressive. I look forward to all his future incantations.
As for genius, I’d put Jack White up there with the late Marc Bolan.
What brilliance decided to use the “Plastics” for the new Dell laptop TV commercial ?

John Gillis aka Jack White, inspires me on a daily basis. What more can I say.

I think it is great to see Jack working with a new band! I love his work…..but…….I really really miss the Stripes! :( Him and Meg have an energy on stage that he will never get with anyone else……..I hope it is not over for The White Stripes!!!!

The Death Weather | 4/12/2009, 7:43 pm EST

I Love Jack to pieces. I’m A HUGE fan. I hope he and Meg come out with more for the Stripes, but until then, I’m just happy to hear he’s putting out new stuff. I LOVE him. I’m dideport on him for school and I blew my teacher away with how much I knew. He’s AMAZING. He’s the best musician EVER! He’s the reason I want to learn to play the Guitar.

I really wish people would stop talking about stripes. They ARE awesome but think of it from a musicain view. It shows how into music he really is. I don’t think the man ever stops. I appreciate a musician that can still continue to grow and think outside the box , while still remembering roots, exspecially after all these years. So shut up, sit back, and just enjoy the damn show…

I’m really excited for the new project. I don’t use the term hero lightly, but whether you like Jack White’s music or not, he is a hero to every independent artist trying to forge a new path in popular music. The great thing about his songs is that I don’t like half of them the first time I hear them. I think his music takes careful consideration to push the boundaries, and yes, make you feel uncomfortable with them at first. If his music wasn’t an acquired taste, then it would undercut his goal of making something new.

Why in Gods name are so many people getting their panites in a wad over this? I love what I have heard so far. I have tickets for the June 11th show in Louisville, KY and am really looking forward to hearing the rest of their work. So what if he is in three bands and all that. Its like critiquing and artist for painting in more than one medium! Jack is extremely talented as a musician and a lyricist. If you don’t like him…don’t listen. Its a pretty basic logic ya board clutterers!

Yeah check out Royal Trux because this is kind of a tribute band. They were doing this 10 years ago. Even the way the lead singer acts on stage, dresses and sings is a total homage to Jennifer Herrema.
Kind of disappointing.

What’s with all the haters here?
If you don’t like Jack, or the Dead Weather, then why are you here?

And also, to those people who won’t stop saying how much they miss the White Stripes, just shut up and enjoy Jack’s new stuff. Like others here have said, Jack is an artist with great ideas and he can’t get everything out with just one band.

The Dead Weather is amazing. They are yet another amazing project from White. I saw them at House of Blues, Boston, on 7.18, and they were just brilliant.

shadowz | 8/17/2009, 1:17 pm EST

what happened to meg??? she was so good of a drummer! and does jack still have a girlfriend?

Alex | 8/30/2009, 6:14 am EST

I agree with Go Girl. Just let him do his thing. If the Stripes was all he had we would never of experienced the Raconteurs. Just trust him to rock the shit out of anything he does…

guido da sausage man | 9/16/2009, 11:05 pm EST
