Chris Brown Withdraws From Kids Choice Awards In Light of Rihanna Controversy

Chris Brown has withdrawn his name from two categories at this year’s Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards due to the two felony charges he is facing as a result of the alleged February 8th assault of Rihanna. “Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the incident last month has shifted the focus from the music to whether he should be allowed to be among those nominated,” a spokesperson told CNN. Brown had been nominated in the Favorite Male Singer and Favorite Song categories. Brown was also featured on the Kids Choice Awards’ Website yesterday until his picture was taken down on the KCA Nominees page.

“We agree with and respect his decision, and are looking forward to presenting a great event for our audience,” Nickelodeon said of Brown’s withdrawal. Public outcry had been building for the last week after the Kids Choice Awards announced their nominees including Brown, who will be arraigned April 8th. Still, the network didn’t eliminate Brown from contention until the 19-year-old star withdrew his nominations. Brown isn’t the only controversial figure to be nominated for an award, he’s just the only one to withdraw. There’s also bong-smoking Michael Phelps for Favorite Athlete, Waffle House rumbler Kid Rock for Favorite Male Singer and teen mom Jamie Spears and her Zoey 101 for Favorite Show.

In other Brown news, the singer’s manager Tina Davis has denied she and her client are involved romantically, despite reports that she was the “mysterious woman” who sent the text message to Brown that set off Rihanna on February 8th. “The relationship between Ms. Davis and Mr. Brown is that of manager and client. There has never been any other relationship,” Davis’ lawyer told ET. “The rumors in circulation are false. There are no e-mails between Ms. Davis and Mr. Brown of the type which have been described in media reports. If the source of the false rumors is identified, legal action will be taken.” The police warrant in the case described the woman who texted Brown as someone he had a “previous sexual relationship with.”

You know the whole thing is crazy and blown out to be silly. Now we all no when you are involved with someone unless he is just hitting you for on the spot all of the time because he is crazy that is one thing but these to are two adult her older then him. She is looking in his phone (first NO NO) and she gets mad while he is driving and slaps him while he is driving to me self defence. I have been there and I have been the female that slap the mess out of mine for seeing a picture. I mean that could have been a set up. how many haters do we have out there. You doing see me in jail or him in jail for getting in a fight. The PoPo just want there office to look like justus served that is all that are not doing anything big. leave that boy alone and tell RERE to take a chill pill she is black she will heal we have taken more then a but whopen in the past. Grow up and stop building up drama.

Kiersten | 3/12/2009, 11:01 am EST

I believe it is wrong that there are so many other nominees who would not make great role models for children eitehr, yet no outcries were made for them to be deleted from the nominations. If Chris Brown has to experience such situations from parents, the others should as well (ie: Michael Phelps). Phelps was a role model for children as well. His latest drug encounter seems to be forgotten – his name is still among the nominations. This is definitely wrong and I disagree with what has transpired. I’m in no way condoning Chris’ actions, but feel that all individuals who have done somethings contoversial should be equally treated!

but whopen | 3/12/2009, 11:17 am EST

Hey “Been there before”. What can I say – you are such a wordsmith.

Terance | 3/12/2009, 11:39 am EST

@been there before: wow.. are you serious? how do you even know how to get on the internet?

Terance | 3/12/2009, 11:57 am EST

Whether they are adults or not hitting women isn’t acceptible. I’ve been hit by women and I’ve never hit them back. It’s not even worth it, and they hit like.. well, women. There you have it. Man up, don’t hit women.

Anyway, none of this is a reflection of Chris Brown. It’s a reflection of celebrities and the music industry. They’re just people like the rest of us. With emotions. Hello.. it doesn’t need to be discussed nonstop nationally. It’s a fued. A bad choice. A mistake. An accident. A situation that got blown out of proportion. No big deal.

Win some, lose some.

STOP THE SEXIST COMMENTS ALREADY!

Hitting ANY other HUMAN BEING, regardless of gender, is messed up.

RED | 3/12/2009, 12:16 pm EST

i feel that a private thing has been made very public and I feel that before we can judge we need to know the full story. I am not saying hitting a girl is right, because I am a girl but, I think that as females we need to stop hitting as well. We know that it is okay for us to hit a guy and nothing will happen but if they lay a hand on us then we can call the police and arrest them. hummmmh there are men that get abused but look at how hard it is to prove it. what is our world coming to? But, why are we making this one particular situation bigger than the millions of women that are abused each day? is it because they are not a star that they have no voice?

ThaKommentKid25 | 3/12/2009, 12:26 pm EST

I agree with Kiersten whole-heartedly. Chris Brown’s actions are unforgivable, and the others should not be in the running for awards as well. But what can one do? Chris’ management thought it would be best to step out. It is up to the other “celebrities” and their PR to deal with. If they don’t feel they did anything wrong, we can all just sit back and watch the youth become who they admire.

itskarma | 3/12/2009, 1:27 pm EST

There is a huge difference between smoking pot or getting pregnant and beating someone’s face in. Even if your anger is justified, there is no excuse for pounding another human in the face with enough force to cause such injuries as those sustained by Rhianna … it’s simply barbaric.

itskarma | 3/12/2009, 1:32 pm EST

… and for been there before, what the hell does being black have to do with it???? It’s okay to allow someone to beat you because your black and you’ll heal??? Good lord.

A real man does not hit a woman back.

Dan | 3/12/2009, 2:21 pm EST

Chris Brown apologists cannot spell to save their lives. Smoking pot (Michael Phelps), getting into a brawl at Waffle House (Kid Rock) or the various other legal or moral missteps by the artists nominated for the Kids Choice Awards are nowhere near the level of putting a woman into a headlock and beating her face into a pulp. There is never an excuse to physically harm a woman unless your life is quite literally threatened, so unless Rihanna had a loaded gun and was ready to use on Chris, he deserves all the backlash and pending jail time. Men shouldn’t hit women. Ever. People shouldn’t hit each other, but resolve differences with mature discourse, but there is never ever an excuse for a man to hit a woman. The justice system will hopefully make an example of Chris Brown to show assaulting a woman is wrong on so many levels and the punishment will be harsh and lasting. Chris Brown will get slapped around like he did Rihanna and worse when he’s in jail.

If you want to defend the actions of a coward who beats up people who have no way to defend themselves, at least learn how to spell, use accepted English grammar and construct a coherent argument. I don’t know what’s more depressing, a physically intimidating wealthy celebrity beating a defenseless woman regardless of her actions leading up to the assault, the pathetic defense of Chris Brown’s actions, or the inability to use the English language shown by many of his defenders.

There is a BIG, BIG difference between smoking some pot and BEATING AND BITING a woman!

After you’ve won that many gold medals you deserve to smoke some weed. Who cares?!

Christ, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:

Half the damn posts on this subject look like the last line of a Department Of Motor Vehicles Eye Exam Chart.

You know, Henry Rollins made a brilliant point once with a comment to the effect of once you hit someone, you pretty much show the limits of your intelligence.

Judging from that, looks like a few of these posters have been on the receiving end.

luz | 3/12/2009, 6:05 pm EST

Why is everybody over looking the fact that RIHANNA ‘SLAPPED’ and ‘VERBALLY ABUSED’ chris brown before? are you telling me that it’s not a big deal if a woman physically and verbally abuses a man, but if a guy abuses a woman there’ a pathetic outcry like you’ve never seen before. i’m not condoning chris, but pleeeeze people the guy is just a kid, give him a break already, what about Rihanna’s part? why is she not being crusified as well. I don’t think it’s fair. they are both in the wrong.BE FAIR PEOPLE!! GOSH !!

luz | 3/12/2009, 6:14 pm EST

I was upset with chris, but when I found out that Rihanna is not ‘all innocent’ like the way people are trying to make us believe, I forgave chris. I think they are both victims as far as i’m concerned. I feel so sorry for chris the way he’s being attacked. I’m sure after this experience he’ll be much wiser. He’s a kid, he’ll definately learn from this, especially knowing that any little mistake he’s ever going to make in future will be HIGHLY PUBLICISED. Do you really think he’ll dare do something like this again when EVERYBODY in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD is watching and recording his wins and looses? I don’t think so.

in fact, all of you ditzy chicks in here taking up for chris brown should be beaten into a coma. rihanna is 37 lbs…well 28 with the short hair, so for him to hit her like that? please, he should be stomped for that. but whatever…in the meantime, i need for all the chickenheads in here to stock up on some self esteem. *walkin away muttering* shooo, sit up and let some man beat on u…must be out yo dagon mind…wish i was that boy’s mama, i’da knocked fire from his azz…

mr. scientist | 3/12/2009, 7:24 pm EST

the only reason why chirs brown fans are defending him is because they want to fuck him.

chris brown is a fucking douchebag and it saddens me that there are alot of airheaded dumb bitches that still forgive him.

LOOK AT RIHANNA YOU FUCKING DIPSHITS!!! SHE LOOKS FUCKING DEAD IN HER PICTURE!! YOU CAN’T SAY SHIT ABOUT CHRIS OR RIHANNA UNLESS YOU WERE ACTUALLY THERE YOU DICKRIDERS!!!

and on another note, it’s hillarious how low nickelodeon has gone to nominate michael phelps, jamie spears, and kid rock because if they did dismiss chris brown, the channel would’ve been looked at as being racist.

brandonM3 | 3/12/2009, 9:48 pm EST

fu*k chris brown!!! any guy (i won’t even call him a man) who has to resort to striking a woman, is not a man in my book. total f’n douchebag, just like r.kelly -

NeeSee | 3/12/2009, 10:10 pm EST

I think that people need to acknowledge the fact that rihanna has put her hands on chris. Even thought hitting her was not the best thing, he should not take ALL the blame. They are both equally thE blame. Its funny how that picture came out of rihanna where she looked half dead but a few days later another picture was posted of her but her face was perfectly fine. is something wrong with that? or what. So all you rude ass girls need to really look at the big picture. They are “both ” equally responsible for their actions and chris is not just the BAD 0NE.

kbrea13 | 3/13/2009, 10:51 am EST

It really does not surprise me that Chris Brown dropped from the Kids Choice awards. If he is not in jail, which I find ridiculous, he should be tucked away out of the public eye for a while. I just get frustrated when celebrities get a simple slap on the wrist when they do something wrong. It is amazing to me with all the cameras surrounding Brown and all the evidence in the world, there is still a chance he can just pay money for his mistake; as if money is a real chore and burden.

Paul Robertson | 3/13/2009, 11:09 am EST

I feel that Chris Brown withdrawing from the kids choice awards was a smart decision for his career. The American community is very forgiving to stars after they commit crimes. Although Chris Brown’s crime has been amplified more by the paparazzi and the media, I still feel like he can recover from this incident. I do not condone any form of violence whether it be a man versus a man or a man versus a woman. Chris Browns reaction to the situation he found himself in was completely wrong. This being the case I feel Chris and Rihanna should sit=it down and discuss this matter.
Both Chris and Rihanna’s careers will have different effects from the violent encounter that took place. Brown has already withdrawn himself from the Kids choice awards hosted by Nickelodeon. Brown is now facing two felony charges and could be facing prison time. “Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the incident last month has shifted the focus from the music to whether he should be allowed to be among those nominated,” (Kreps) Chris Brown is a very talented artist. Even with his bad behavior I feel he should still be rewarded for the Music he created. Kanye West had accusations about George Bush and how he felt about African American citizens in the United States. Yet somehow, Kanye West is one of the highest paid hip-hop performers.
Therefore, I feel that Chris Brown pulling put of the kids choice awards was in his best interest. I do not condone his actions, I feel they were irrational and he will be punished whether or not he likes it. The one thing I feel is his career is not over. Chris Brown will continue to make music and seek help for anger management. The American community is very forgiving to stars who commit crimes and I feel this situation is no different.

Shane | 3/13/2009, 6:58 pm EST

Ok, so how old are these “kids” for whom the awards show nominates people? Kid Rock? Chris Brown? What happened to Fred Penner and Raffi? Or do we want our kids drinking whiskey out the bottle? This is ridiculous.

Shane | 3/13/2009, 7:02 pm EST

Oh, and I forgot about that Michael Phelps thing. Do we really think “bong-smoking” is the most relevant adjective to put next to his name? Did we all forget he’s one of history’s great athletes? You’re not fooling anyone when you act all self-righteous – there are people doing drugs out there who don’t accomplish anything. He, on the other side, is a 20-something who for once in his life tried to relax and got morally bombarded. I don’t smoke pot, but I don’t think pot makes Phelps a bad person.

feed up | 3/14/2009, 11:52 am EST

everyone needs to get off chris brown back, live their own life. we should not past judgement, when Elvis use to beat and rape his wife. and how many people are still up his ass. his is still american dream boat with his own stamp.plus he was drug addict. so remember that the next time we want to slam a child for a mistake.

Ryan Gentry | 3/14/2009, 11:01 pm EST

While I can see the importance in teaching kids good morals and the life lesson that can come with banning Chris Brown from the award show, I think people also need to understand the importance of acceptance, and also forgiveness. While I don’t condone violence towards women at all, I do think it is important to think back to before when Chris Brown was looked at, mostly by young children, as somebody who deserves to be admired and looked up to. Although he made a mistake, I think that he should be forgiven, especially since he has said that he would enter rehabilitation and publiclly apologized for what he has done. If Rihanna can forgive him for what he has done, why can’t the rest of America?
I think comparisons can be drawn between this scandal, and also the Michael Phelps scandal. Both were public figures who a lot of people looked up to, and both did something that a lot of people find offensive (although, personally, I think that pot smoking is a lot less offensive than domestic violence).
Brown has already been dropped from multiple sponsors, and also many radiostations have dropped his music from their station’s playlists. Hasn’t he already suffered enough for what he has done? If this were some random person, he would not have to go through all of this.

I agree with this statement, seeing as how Chris Brown’s camp could be trying to play low, considering the incident just happened. I think that if Chris Brown plays his cards right, the American public will eventually forgive him.

Dude Man | 3/15/2009, 9:51 pm EST

Personally, I hate both Brown’s and Rihanna’s music, but this is not about that. This man should not get away with violence that was uncalled for and this girl is a complete idiot for taking him back.

Tracie | 3/15/2009, 10:45 pm EST

No hitting women is not acceptable, but give Chris a break! He did a bad thing, maybe he was high? He f**ed up, but it doesn’t mean he is this terrible person!I am praying that he and Rihanna come out of all this okay.I don’t think he deserves jail.
