What’s different about American Idol this season? The finalists are all living together in a mansion in, we presume, Beverly Hills, based on the Weezer song that blared in the background during footage of the posh new digs (what recession?). And there’s a new “twist that could shake up the entire competition,” per Ryan Seacrest: a rule designed to keep talented singers in the competition longer than voters desire (see Daughtry, Chris and Hudson, Jennifer). The new “Judge’s Save” allows Cowell and the panel to block one contestant from elimination just once. The decision must be unanimous, and the judges can only break out this little trick once. The week after the “save” (or “We Know Better Than You Do”), two singers will be eliminated.
Nobody was saving the first two hopefuls with the lowest number of votes last night, though: as Rock Daily suspected, Jasmine Murray and Jorge Nunez were both sent packing, meaning Idol got a lot less diverse very fast after 33 million Americans cast votes Tuesday night. After a Jackson 5 medley complete with choreography (Scott MacIntyre, we bow down to you) Seacrest brought out two bottom twos: Murray and Megan Joy Corkrey, and Anoop Desai and Nunez. Judges’ favorite Corkrey, and crowd favorite Desai survived the week-one cut.
Kanye West took the Idol stage to perform “Heartless,” begging the question, how can a show devoted to the art of singing welcome West’s off-key Auto Tuned warbling? Kelly Clarkson fared much better with the single “My Life Would Suck Without You” from her new album All I Ever Wanted (stick around and read the review). From here on out, we’ll be seeing a former Idol contestant on every results show (take a look back at Kelly’s run from Idol to All I Ever Wanted here). Things should certainly get interesting the week Taylor Hicks comes back.
