Velvet Revolver Deny Canadian Singer Is Group’s New Frontman

3/11/09, 12:46 pm EST

Velvet Revolver are denying they’ve hired a Canadian singer to fill the frontman position vacated by Scott Weiland last year. Rumors began circulating online that Gord Prior, singer of the band Blu Bones, was the group’s new vocalist after videos of him singing over two unreleased Velvet Revolver demos were posted onto YouTube. However, a rep for the band tells Music Radar, “Gord Prior isn’t the new guy. In fact, no decision has been made as to who the singer is.” That news is a little surprising since in early February, bassist Duff McKagan told Rock Daily a new hire was “weeks away.”

Two demos, titled “Mutha Fuka” (above) and “Slappy,” were sent out to numerous candidates vying for the vocalist job, and each potential replacement was asked to write words, construct melodies and sing over the instrumental tracks. “He’s just one of numerous singers that tapes went out to,” the band’s spokesperson told Music Radar. “Gord submitted his demos just like everybody else. He wasn’t even asked to come in and do a formal audition. I don’t know why these videos get out there, but that’s just the nature of the Internet.”

Prior is just the latest in a long stream of singers who have been rumored to take over for the exiled Scott Weiland. Everyone from Lenny Kravitz to Chris Cornell to Spacehog’s Royston Langdon to Alter Bridge’s Myles Kennedy to Sebastian Bach have been rumored at one point to take over mic duties.

“It’s down to a couple of guys,” McKagan told Rolling Stone last month. “That’s way down from the 400 original guys we got submissions from.” Whether or not Prior was one of those couple of guys remains to be seen.

“axl/scott rip off” hit the nail on the head man lol!

Gord Prior | 3/11/2009, 4:14 pm EST

Oh come on guys!!!

I’m not that bad I can do the axl voice pretty good!?! (I tried so hard!!! :( )

I promise give me time and our record will sound like a GNR reunion!!!

oh and STFU Ryan, as much of a fuck up weiland was he still ownes

Someone Famous | 3/11/2009, 5:22 pm EST

All I read is a bunch of comments from a bunch of people that wish their name was in the article istead of Gord’s. Some people spend their whole life being an artist and performer and get no where, I think that it comes down to what the band and their true fans want, not some sore losers. Only the band can deside what’s best not you. Go Gordie.

martin | 3/11/2009, 6:03 pm EST

the songs called Clappy not Slappy. As for his voice, well VR can do a lot better then this guy.

Snoopy | 3/11/2009, 6:15 pm EST

NO MAN HE IS SHIT

I must agree with you that a lot of people wish their names were on here. But that does not make him a good singer. Although having these tracks leak it is a great promotion move I have to give him props on that. His name is everywhere when you type Velvet Revolver in on Google.
And lets face it you do not have to be a wicked singer to become famous…..!

Jon Wilson | 3/11/2009, 6:25 pm EST

All you people go and listen to Kevin Jones at myspace he is kicked every singers ass on these tracks – its laughable !!! just search Kevin Jones Velvet Revolver Auditions and listen to the track they gave him that he wrote and sang and sent back to the band and their mgmnt co – I have listened to all these other guys and Jones makes them all look like a joke. They need a pro not a 21 yr old fashion model

vlawde | 3/11/2009, 6:31 pm EST

Gotta agree with most, he sounds like he’s trying to sound like Weiland and isn’t as good.

IMO they shouldn’t try to find a sound-alike for either Axle or Scott and take this opportunity to make Velvet Revolver a better band and break new ground

Simon Cowell | 3/11/2009, 6:31 pm EST

We think Gord would be perfect for American Idol or maybe a new MTV Reality Show but as the singer for Slash & Co ? give me a break – horrible and way to WIMPY !The world wants to ROCK like the first GNR Record again already !I just listened to Kevin Jones track at myspace and he has the voice image and style this bands needs. Back to their true Roots like GNR

Johnny | 3/11/2009, 7:12 pm EST

I don’t know about the singer, the rest of the song sucked so bad I could barely listen to it.

Is it the Lion running Back Kevin Jones ?

devils own | 3/11/2009, 7:55 pm EST

i would put Gord up against any one of Slash’s previous frontmen…better singerand frontman than weiland by a landslide both of them…not to mention the best part of those tunes WAS his vox, the music is LAME….bring on the GNR reunion, get ot over with already….

Zyrus | 3/11/2009, 8:15 pm EST

Jeff | 3/11/2009, 9:00 pm EST

People who hear these demos should now understand why Axl Rose does not need Slash.

I feel sorry for the singers who are auditioning…they have to sing for such a contrived, half-assed, and generic sounding group.

And I love Slash as a performer and for his work in his prime. I’m just able to admit his musical output has sucked ever since Use Your Illusion.

devils own | 3/11/2009, 9:27 pm EST

dear LOL,
sure i’ve seen Gord perform many times and i stand by my convictions… i’ve seen Weiland a few times too – so i feel my opinion is valid….on the other hand, you are judging by two songs you heard over the internet and one pic…
lets face it, no one on earth is better suited to rock out with Slash and Duff than Axl,
….including Weiland.

killtheindustry | 3/11/2009, 10:21 pm EST

If VR is gonna continue to write crap Def Leppard type pop tunes why don’t they just get Kelly Clarkson to sing? Either come up with some brutally hard rock or stay home and vacuum the mansions.

loosh papa | 3/12/2009, 12:52 am EST

I love all the haters out there that wish they could sing half as good as this amazing artist. Someone mentioned something about him singing for a boy band? All I have to say is “Do you even know what ROCK sounds like?” I think Gord is amazing and embraces everything that Rock and Roll use to be and needs to become again!
Keep rockin Gord!

ROCK FAN | 3/12/2009, 1:25 am EST

We want a heavy singer !!!!!
We want VR to come heav

david muhn | 3/12/2009, 4:18 am EST

the sister morphine singer is from detroit but aren’t they from minneapolis? this gord prior sounds like a 15 year old boy band wanna be… not even close in vocal range and i think edwards has a much harder and tougher vocal style. anyone know if he’s the detroiter on the ’short list’ as they put it?

E.G. | 3/12/2009, 10:51 am EST

Ive seen Gord Prior sing live, I’ve seen Scott Weiland sing live and Ive seen Axl Rose live as well…..all I can say is that Gord is every bit the frontman and vocalist that these guys are, and they’d be foolish not to take him on…

bernard edwards kicks ass live as a singer frontman. he sounds like a man when he sings not some little trendy american idol boy band douche. think of the first van halen with roth. he sounded like a MAN and gord sounds like a child. my vote goes for edwards.

sister morphine kicked ass in the day.

David | 3/12/2009, 7:55 pm EST

I actually heard that Velvet Revolver is going with Udo Dirkschneider (Accept) as their singer. If it doesn’t work with him they’re going with Steve Grimmett (Grim Reaper).

prior support | 3/12/2009, 9:09 pm EST

anyone who has ever seen Gord live knows he has more energy on stage than the rest of the band put together, people still begging to work with him…sorry for those of you who haven’t had the privilege…boy band? what?!! he’s got major edge and the vibe to match…VR would be so fortunate, their loss.

Jim | 3/12/2009, 9:20 pm EST

I’m with you p.s. Obviously these guys don’t know his history. Gordie will always stand out in my mind for some of the top live shows ever. His vocals fit this music but he can do much more. Hope they checked him out.

blast from the past | 3/12/2009, 9:22 pm EST

He could totally win over the hardcore fans. Go Gord!!

Johnny | 3/12/2009, 10:53 pm EST

I,ve seen Gord play live many times and to be honest it was Boris that stole the show, I was never Impressed with Gord, too One dimensional. sounds the same today as he did 20 years ago.

roxy | 3/13/2009, 4:19 am EST

bernard edwards again…

mrhubbs | 3/13/2009, 9:17 am EST

This Prior guy is thr real deal!! Not only does he sound perfect..he can write..and looks the part. Slash i haven’t heard a voice that compliments you in a long time!!

Drum Tech | 3/13/2009, 11:50 am EST

I Agree with Hubbs, his voice compliments SLASH. I have been around music a long time , and i think this is a great match. I hope they go with someone like GORD who is not already established
like a WEILAND. American Idol type success. I would buy tickets to see that. Good luck GORD love what you did with those 2 songs.

loosh papa | 3/13/2009, 12:30 pm EST

Obviously a person sounds the same as they did 20 years ago, its called “What your voice sounds like”! His voice sounds like a true Rock and Roller which is what it should sound like! Go Gord keep rockin’!

Wil | 3/13/2009, 12:47 pm EST

yes Johnny, Boris was great too and they were a great pair but I don’t agree with the one dimentional comment. I heard they’re putting a Blubones my space page up again, hopefully it’ll have a mix of talents to reveal.

Kouz | 3/13/2009, 12:53 pm EST

I think Gord Prior sounds amazing.

Anyone think these are signs of change in the VR camp?

1) They are dropped from their label.

2) Duff starts “moonlighting” with Playboy assignments.

3) Matt Sorum puts his L.A. house on the market.

Coincidence? YOU be the judge.

Johnny | 3/13/2009, 6:13 pm EST

Just my opinion about being one dimensional, but about the 20 year thing, it may have sounded good in the 80s but get over it, who listens to that crap anymore, quit livin in the past. just me

Tom Rock | 3/13/2009, 7:31 pm EST

Amazing stuff, this guy fits the band. Love what you did with those two songs.

loosh papa | 3/14/2009, 11:46 am EST

Who listens to 80s crap anymore? Seriously? I know people have moved on to that fake boy band, mixed, not even what they really sound like “rock” I guess you could call it, but aside from this one comment there are a lot of people out there that are excited to hear upgraded live music. People with true live TALENT!

areawoman | 3/14/2009, 12:37 pm EST

Any major dude will tell you … it’s KEVIN JONES.

Mark Lawrence | 3/14/2009, 2:59 pm EST

I personally think Gord is perfect for the job(and not because he’s a personal friend). I’ve seen him perform countless times and always found he was one of rocks best kept secrets (world-class frontman). Gord is also an excellent producer (one less person for VR to pay as they wouldn’t have to hire a producer).
Seems some jealous people like to put childish “21 yr old boyband wannabe” comments because their auditions got rejected. Hey guys, I won’t reveal his age but, he’s got a daughter that’s 21. As for the “Gord-impersonator”-It’s obvious to anybody who knows Gord that you’re an asshole. Gord is far too humble to ever make those dumb-ass egotistical comments so grow up and get a life. With that said-GORD’S THE MAN

Major Dude | 3/16/2009, 1:03 pm EST

It’s Kevin Jones.

area woman | 3/16/2009, 1:11 pm EST

To all you misguided people who actually think Gord is a contender:

This is an audition for Velvet Revolver. Not Planet Unicorn.

drum tech | 3/18/2009, 10:43 pm EST

when do they announce prior is the new frontman offically

Ha. | 3/19/2009, 10:06 am EST

I’d much rather it were robert plant. this guy sounds too much like hes out of the blackout or some sh*t. It would rip off a good band and ruin VR for me.

V R Fan | 3/19/2009, 3:35 pm EST

I have been a fan since VR’s first record I just listened to this guy Kevin Jones on his myspace page for his VR audition song and he sounds perfect for VR it is magic !!! He is a heavier singer than Scott Weiland but I like his voice better he sounds better than Scott or Axl I always wanted VR to go heavy again like GNR this guy could bring this band back to the top of the world !! Good Luck to Kevin Jones

Ruby's Mom | 3/19/2009, 5:24 pm EST

Kevin Jones will take no prisoners and that’s what this band needs… raw/real/relentless talent.
GOOD LUCK KEVIN JONES!

Prior In VR? | 3/19/2009, 6:57 pm EST

This guy is an opportunist. Who the hell gets a chance like this then blows it by leaking the songs and insinuating that he is the new guy? Apparently he also did a local radio interview too and basically hinted that “the decision wasnt final yet”-if it wasnt before, it is now, I’m sure.

p.s. Axl called-he wants his voice back.

Prior In VR? | 3/19/2009, 7:01 pm EST

Oh, and I just read that he ‘produces’ too? So I looked it up.

HELIX.

LOL

Ni ce three-chord wonders he wrote (give them a listen) with suitably childish, cliche lyrics.

God, this guyis a piece of work.

Mark Lawrence | 3/20/2009, 2:55 pm EST

Are you jealous that helix didn’t ask YOU to produce their album?? Lets see a list of albums you’ve produced. At least helix isn’t stuck in a 9-5 slavery existence.
Speaking of producing, gotta run to the studio.
GORDS THE MAN

areawoman | 3/20/2009, 9:31 pm EST

i would rather see them return with a whole new out-look and i just bought the sm cd from cd baby and edwards vocals sounds like a perfect fit. just my opinion.

wicked... | 3/21/2009, 1:05 am EST

metal up! edwards is the old bassist from corrupt and later he sang for rock band sister morphine. he’s the real deal.

Sonty | 3/21/2009, 2:13 pm EST

I heard that local interview. The dj quoted the last paragraph of this very RS article. Prior said he wasn’t holding his breath and that he didn’t have the gig. He just auditioned like everyone else. Prior also said that VR’s managment said it was ok to put the songs on youtube and a friend of his did just that. These were not leaked. There are other versions of these very same songs on Youtube from months ago with other guys. This is just a rumor that spread quick because of the internet. I think he did a great job.

Gunner | 3/25/2009, 6:54 pm EST

Kevin Jones will be the new VR Singer all these posers can kick rocks

wicked | 3/25/2009, 6:58 pm EST

VR is disbanding. The writing’s on the wall, dudes.

Mason | 3/26/2009, 3:14 pm EST

What a wicked… attitude – yeah your glass is half empty like your brain VR will rise again harder edged than GNR ever was with Kevin Jones at the helm. Watch VR Rise Up and kick ass !!

Areawoman | 4/1/2009, 12:47 pm EST

KEVIN JONES begs the question: “What day did the Lord create Gord Prior, and couldn’t he have rested on that day too?”

ABC | 4/3/2009, 9:40 am EST

It is so sad that this guy has to read all these hateful comments. He may not be the new singer but he tried out just like the other 400 applicants. This guy is a father, so show a little respect when saying such things like “What day did the Lord create Gord Prior, and couldn’t he have rested on that day too?”. I just can’t believe some people out there have so much hate for good people. Good audition Gord!

ABC | 4/3/2009, 9:46 am EST

To add, Kevin Jones may have fans out there and thats great for him, but reading these comments just makes him look like a sore loser due to all the hype that came about when Gord was noticed. Looks immature on “some” people’s part. Thats all VR needs is another cocky arrogant meat head! Be professional, especially if your going to become a huge icon and performer!

Areawoman | 4/3/2009, 12:14 pm EST

OMG! It is readily apparent that the Gord Prior Camp has no appreciation for nor awareness of musical “rockumentary” references.
Furthermore, if he intends to be in the public eye, Mr. Prior would be well advised to accept rejection and public criticism more graciously. It comes with the package.

— AN UNAPOLOGETIC KEVIN JONES FAN

Addendum to Last Post:

Additionally, Kevin Jones is not responsible for the posts of his many fans, like myself. Any serious offense was not intended and from one parent to another, Gord, just roll with the punches. Its only life.

bernard edwards has lsd… (lead singer disease) lol… likes to drink and fuck your wife. he’s not abad singer just a bad judge of character. he was notorious in minneapolis for boozing and drugging it up here locally at the cc club and sleeping around. causing trouble and hanging around strippers and the wrong element. would be like dave lee roth in the 80’s. not gonna work.

john richmond | 4/13/2009, 2:41 pm EST

hey todd did bernie screw your wife? lol… you sound bitter. too bad he didn’t do your siter too… ;) he’s an excellent choice for singer and as far as “lsd” goes that’s what a real rock ‘n roll singer is supposed to be about. and comparing him to dave roth might be a stretch but if that’s any indication he’d be a good choice. his vocals are pretty unique and original in style.

Pee Wee | 4/14/2009, 7:21 pm EST

just got a copy of the sister morphine… pretty cool sleazy band his vocals would work awesome for the revolver guys.

rotharmy | 4/15/2009, 9:51 pm EST

yep, bernie edwards is the shizit… ask them folkz at knac… a stand up guy who knows how to be a complete asshole. he has “lsd” for sure and fancies himself at a higher standard then most of us… control freak, aggressive but talented in a twisted sort of way as most artists tend to be. he has a good voice but his personality might be his downfall…

suze randall | 4/15/2009, 9:54 pm EST

anonymous | 4/18/2009, 8:02 pm EST

anybody have info on if this bernard guy is the one on the short list? sister morphine are from minneapolis mn, edwards is from detroit or are we talking about 2 different people? i hope band does something it’s starting to look like they may be history.

Julian from Blackened Heart | 4/22/2009, 3:56 pm EST

I can’t even believe anyone cares anymore who the lead singer of Velvet Revolver is. Bands like this are all washed up in my opinion. Even Axl and GNR are washed up. The big new GNR record lasted about a week in my CD player before I gave it away. Velvet Revolver was cool when it first came out, but i’m certainly not interested anymore, and don’t have plans on running out and preordering the new album if there ever is one. The future belongs to new bands like mine.

tomcat | 4/24/2009, 7:57 pm EST

the singer on the so called short list for detroit is bernard edwards of the band sister morphine. rumor has it edwards is still awaiting a reply from the vr management regarding status of him being chosen.

t. jaffries | 4/24/2009, 8:05 pm EST

eddie go back to detroit and sing for seduce… god knows the poor old tired shit needs a decent vocalist. btw, you were a far better choice then that angelo guy, for sure. i don’t think you’ll be singing for vr because i think the band is over.

mike | 4/29/2009, 12:16 am EST

seduce are afraid of a real singer… that’s why they chose angelo. he was easy to mold into what mark and david wanted. eddie i’m afraid won’t bend to that so that probably won’t work. besides eddie is highly agitated. someone might end up punched in the face.
drinks too much and likes to screw around with the female fans… not a good combination i’m afraid. that was years ago amybe he’s not as wild these days. velvet revolver ain’t good enough for this dude anyway. they are over.

1987 | 4/29/2009, 4:33 pm EST

After much consideration and soul searching,I have decided that the new singer for Velvet Revolver should be……SUSAN BOYLE!!!!!!!

How fucking hard is it to find a singer when your name is Slash, and Duff? I wouln’t think it would be that hard. When you do you need to get Izzy back in the band because he writes the good songs. I heard someone say you should get Adam Lambert. That would be awesome but Simon Fuller probably wouldn’t let that happen. HURRY THE FUCK UP AND PUT OUT SOME TUNES!

To the person saying “Axl called and wants his voice back”. I see you obviously haven’t heard Gord’s 1984 (before g n r) recording “Rock Free” (he was in his 1st band SENTINEL then ). He sounded the same then. It should be Axl calling Gord and asking for HIS voice back.

meant to say Gord should be calling Axl . lol. Actually the only similarity these 2 singers share are the fact that they both have high range voices. The tones are totally different. Anybody comparing Gord’s tone and Axl’s must be deaf or something. They have about as much in common tonality wise as Robert Plant does with Steve Perry.

That Angelo guy that was in Seduce was a friend of mine and unfortunately died last year. I have a pic of he and I together back in the day. He had a great voice.

jenny | 11/7/2009, 5:54 am EST

cdbaby has the 1989 debut from sister morphine still out there, just look. real rock and real sleaze. seduce were ponces…

mick | 11/11/2009, 10:26 pm EST

angelo was a poser… edwards was a real attitude singer frontman… ganos vocals were bon jovi style. edwards was cult style and fit well with the hard rock glam stylings of the day… just my opinion. someone is trying to keep a dead memory alive but no matter what they say angelo is still dead. enough.

drumster | 11/15/2009, 7:17 am EST
