Ryan Adams and singer-actress Mandy Moore were secretly married yesterday in Savannah, Georgia, reps for both told Us Weekly. Adams and Moore announced their engagement in February 2009 after an on-off romance that began in March 2008. Moore recently told Us she wanted a quiet wedding, saying, “Hopefully, it can happen and slip by unnoticed by everybody. I guess we have to be sort of sneaky about it, but I’ll see what I can accomplish.”

When he announced his break from the Cardinals and subsequent hiatus in January 2009, Adams expressed a desire to get on with his private life, writing in a blog post, “I am excited to step away. i lost more than anyone will ever know (hearing, someone i loved, my sense of dignity, a never ending losing battle with stage fright.” The last year has also seen the prolific singer sober up, quit smoking and work on numerous books.

The honeymoon will have to wait as Adams is still on the road for the last time with the Cardinals, performing tonight in Columbia, South Carolina. Adams’ tenure with the Cardinals concludes March 20th with a show at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. Despite Adams’ assertion that he’ll take a hiatus once after the band’s final show, there have been reports that Adams is already working on a new album called Dear Impossible, his follow-up to 2008’s Cardinology.

Actually, he’s performing tonight in Charleston (at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center), Columbia is tomorrow night (at the Townnship Auditorium).

Anonymous | 3/11/2009, 6:07 pm EST

Hopefully this means he’ll be in a good mood for the show tomorrow in Columbia! And it’s “Mandy” not Mandi. Geeze…it’s not rocket science to check your facts…

Tell em IV. The Charleston show sucked except for making fun of this girl with a huge boob tat (huge tat that is)

Mandy Was supposed to be my Wife… I never got the chance

matthew | 3/12/2009, 7:56 am EST

To everyone that is begging for Ryan to keep performing and come to their town… be careful what you wish for. Like the guy before me said, the North Charleston show was an enormous rip-off. The songs they played were excellent, but they played for less than an hour and a half. I got a set list afterwards and they skipped 3/4 of their songs, including some of their best, and no encore. Immediate house lights and music. Completely unprofessional and very disappointing to a long-time fan to whom $40 is a big sacrifice to go to a show. Next time he’s around I’ll probably just skip it.

Matthew P. Smith | 3/12/2009, 9:08 am EST

As a long time fan – you should know that 1.5 hour shows aren’t his norm. I saw him a few months back in TX, and he played for around three hours. So maybe he had an off night – I don’t think I would say someone should stop touring because of one night.

Megan | 3/12/2009, 9:13 am EST

Well, will be seeing him tonight in Columbia! Most likely he will be in a good mood. Also, saw him at the Tabernacle on Sunday and he played for around 2 1/2 hours. Plus, I love the Charleston but its honestly a crappy place to see a show. Every show I’ve been to there its more about being seen there than the actual music. Won’t see a show there again.

Anonymous | 3/12/2009, 9:39 am EST

First of all, Megan – Charleston is a great place to see a concert and much better shows come here than to Columbia – who the heck goes there for any reason anyway?
I went to the N. Chas show last night and having absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the show was here, Matthew is exactly right – he had a very short set, took a break in the middle of it for “sound issues” and played no encore. Shame on you – for someone already known to be difficult in every sense of the word, you certainly put up no argument to that. Here’s one fan who won’t be throwing my $ towards you again.

Anonymous | 3/12/2009, 10:55 am EST

The North Charleston show was a joke. The music was good but to only play one set that lasted and hour and a half with a 10-15 minute break due to audio issues, and then not to play an encore. Congrats to Ryan, but don’t think I’m going to ever spend another penny on his music. Well I guess the only possitive thing to say is atleast he showed up on stage and sober. I hear its 50 50 if he even comes on stage. Mandy keep whooping him into shape and maybe I might try one of his shows again.

Megan | 3/12/2009, 11:31 am EST

Just to let you know Anoymous(since you didn’t put your name) I’ve never been to a show in Columbia and I personally hate that city so I agree with you there. HOWEVER, Atlanta, GA and Asheville, NC have WAY better shows come through than Charleston and the crowds are more lively. I know Ryan can be difficult HOWEVER, I don’t think he is playing shorter shows just to piss peole off. I think he is stuggling to hear, which is one of the reasons he is quitting.

Beth | 3/12/2009, 1:29 pm EST

I got the setlist from the sound guy last night. The set skipped SEVEN songs and the planned two-song encore.
Is Ryan going deaf AND blind?
I’m going to agree with Matthew and say that the songs played were excellent, but fans left disappointed and angry–not defending the band and making excuses.
I’ve been waiting for this show for months, I so enjoy his music–and really hate being let down, no matter the location.

mkc | 3/12/2009, 1:50 pm EST

although the lack of encore and relatively short set was disappointing, i thought he sounded amazing, in fact the best i have ever heard him and if i had gotten married the night before, i’d be running off the stage too!

Matt | 3/12/2009, 2:03 pm EST

No you wouldn’t run off the stage had you gotten married that night before; not if you lived like he does. It’s obviously just a formality to him. Like appreciating the fans who paid good money in a bad economy to see him.

Mandy Moore | 3/12/2009, 2:17 pm EST

Just curious..

What 7 songs were left off?

And what was the encore?

To be such a beautiful AND artistic town, the crowds @ Charleston are not as lively as other places. I’ve never seen so many people walking around during a set.

Other than “Why do They Leave”, the Charleston set he played was very weak and predictable.

Ryan Adams | 3/12/2009, 2:33 pm EST

I’m a self-absorbed piece of sh*t.
I believe the hype about myself and will send this girl sprinting to a divorce lawyer within the year.

Beth | 3/12/2009, 2:47 pm EST

I’m going to post the set list when I get home. I’ll post a link to it here…
The encore? My Sweet Carolina. I was hoping he’d sing it with you, Mandy. A little “hooray I got married in the beautiful South” sort of treat.

matthew (from earlier) | 3/12/2009, 3:24 pm EST

He didn’t play Stars Go Blue, Two, Rescue Blues, Oh my sweet carolina, Easy Plateau, and maybe one other.
Does anyone remember if he played Sink Ships or Rip Off? I can scan the set list and send it to whoever is interested.
I didn’t mean to foster such criticism. I thought they sounded really great. So it’s even worse that we only got half the show that we could have. And 80 bucks for my wife and I is a ton of money.
I understand that maybe there were audio issues for them, but if it’s your job and you take it seriously and if you respect your fans, then you persevere and play through the distraction or you play without the in-ear monitors.

rb | 3/12/2009, 4:14 pm EST

i think it’s funny how the “actual length” of last night’s set keeps dwindling depending on the post-er… a little over an hour and a half… less than an hour and a half…they left off 3/4 of the set (if they had done that, the original set would have had to have been 7 hours long!). the fact is, they played nearly two hours(how often do you see any other band play for that long even) and they sounded fantastic. yes, they left some songs off, but you wouldn’t want to play for three hours with a radio station playing in your ears either. until you become a musician and learn what that’s like, stop whining and be glad he didn’t storm off in the middle of the set and not come back. i think he handled the situation remarkably well and was very calm and respectful about it, even to the point of laughing about it (”we’re just gonna push through it and try to make this awesome.”) all in all, they still played longer than most other bands would even be able to, and they sounded fantastic, so get off your high horse and be glad you got to see such a great set and such a tight band.

rb | 3/12/2009, 4:19 pm EST

by the way, to say they should have just played without the monitors is just naieve and shows that you don’t know what you’re talking about. that would be like asking a race car driver to finish the race even though his car had no wheels. if they had tried to do that, there’s no way they could have heard themselves and you would have complained because they didn’t sound tight enough or Ryan’s vocals weren’t spot-on. stop complaining and get a life already…

matthew ables | 3/12/2009, 4:29 pm EST

re: rb
i apologize. i meant to say that they only played 3/4 of the set list. my mistake.
and i can’t say exactly how long it was, but it certainly was less than 2 hours.
and i’m only speaking out because i’m disappointed. i’m not angry or mean about it.

Bill | 3/12/2009, 5:26 pm EST

Whoa there rb, I don’t think being upset about a crappy show is having a high horse. In fact, I thought Matthew kept it pretty respectful. I was at the show last night in Charleston and taking away the break in the middle, he actually played an hour and 35 minutes. Everyone there was pretty upset with the show. I know they were having annoying in-ear monitor problems, but the songs they played sounded good. I think that when everyone there pays that much, you should play a decent amount of time unless it is physically impossible not to do so. It should be noted that there was no opening band either.

rb | 3/12/2009, 6:15 pm EST

point is i think that to call last night’s show crappy is having a high horse. that’s a pretty average set length for any band, and actually long for some, so complaining because a band played an incredible normal length set instead of a 3 hour set (which Ryan does occasionally, but would be unheard of for any other band) is a little picky and selfish in my opinion.

if the music was bad, you’d have a right to call it crappy, but don’t call it crappy just because the set was shorter than you thought it should be or because they didn’t play “my sweet carolina” or “new york new york” or whatever song you thought you were entitled to hear. just be appreciative of a good show and leave it at that. otherwise, stop going to concerts and just buy CDs. they’re much more predictable…

rb | 3/12/2009, 6:44 pm EST

i think referring to last night’s show as “crappy” is having a high horse. that was a perfectly average length set for a lot of bands, and would have been a long set for some.

“crappy” should be a term reserved for the quality of the music, which i think anyone could agree was fantastic last night. so let’s refrain from referring to a show as “crappy” just because it wasn’t as long as you though it should be or because they didn’t play “such and such a song” that you thought you were entitled to hear. with a song caralog as big as Ryan’s, you can’t expect to hear everything you want, and nobody should expect a three hour show every night.

i would perhaps suggest staying away from live music in the future and sticking to CDs. they’re much more predictable and will play for as long as you like…

Mandy Moore has come in and out of the public eye since her first album, So Real. She has since then been in many movies and has come out with numerous albums and hit singles. Many Hollywood relationships tend to last an only few weeks and for Mandy and Ryan Adams to be together a year before tying the knot is a big commitment. Ryan has shown some differences that have gone with being in a relationship with the pop star. I do agree that it is a happy time for the couple and that it is a happy time in their lives. In having your personal life in the eyes of millions it is more difficult to have a serious relationship with anyone without having the tabloids and paparazzi in your face all the time. It was nice that they could have a small wedding in Savannah. It is an awesome feeling when you find that one that you plan to spend the rest of your life with and are able to share it with people you love and care for. A wedding is an intimate event that should not be publicized if the couple so desires whether they are famous or not.
Many cases you hear that celebrities have these extravagant weddings with numerous other famous people in these gorgeous places. The coverage on many weddings is outdone as well. You see in many magazines who was there what everyone was wearing and not the most important reason is the ceremony of joining the couple. It was nice to read that they celebrated their big day in a “quiet” way. Mandy was also one that you did not read a lot about even after she was out of the Mickey Mouse phase. She has always tried to present herself in a manner those younger girls who read about her and listened to her music would have a positive role model.

Wasn't even there! | 3/12/2009, 8:14 pm EST

This show was the defining moment of my life. It made me a new person and changed my entire perspective on the universe.

Charles Towne | 3/12/2009, 9:20 pm EST

OK I think Charleston audiences are being misrepresented. Yeah, they treat shows like parties, but I felt like the audience was definitely louder and more involved than people have been saying. Almost every song got a great response. Obviously people chose Neil’s songs to leave. He was disappointing and no one paid to see Neal Casal play Ryan Adams. I thought the show was a serious let down. It started at 8:45 and only went until about 10:15. There was plenty of demand for an encore, and most people thought he was just taking a break before finishing his setlist. He could’ve taken more time to adjust the sound and given an adoring audience what they went for, rather than making them feel cheated.

Ryan Adams As Kurt Cobain | 3/12/2009, 10:04 pm EST

Is it true that Ryan Adams will play Curt Kobain in the movie and that Tori Spelling will play the part of Courtney Love?

Cardinal | 3/13/2009, 4:07 pm EST

I’m sorry the Charleston crowd feels like they got a “rip-off,” but the Columbia show was complete perfection. The band was tight, Ryan was great, they played a total of almost 2 1/2 hours … Oh and the cherry on top … a “My Sweet Carolina” encore … I can’t say enough about the show. WHAT A NIGHT!!!

Cola | 3/13/2009, 5:17 pm EST

Ditto the last comment. Columbia show was legit. Started at 8:45, ended at 10:50. Woulda liked to have heard Cobwebs, but still was an excellent show.

rb | 3/13/2009, 10:25 pm EST

it’s not the whole charleston crowd, just a vocal few. the charleston show was actually quite good, just a little shorter. that’s nice you guys got a longer one. thought about trying to drive up for that one as well, but couldn’t work out the logistics. sounds like it was a great show though.

Anonymous | 3/14/2009, 12:19 am EST

They go together like peanut butter and artichokes. :) Isn’t it fantastically odd?

Cardinal | 3/14/2009, 3:23 am EST

It was kinda like “Word Up” … I think Cameo said it best … still I think we played ok at the RAD-RENA.

matthew(still a little bitter) | 3/14/2009, 3:47 pm EST

glad everyone in columbia enjoyed themselves. unfortunately, i don’t have the funds to drive up the next night and enjoy a solid show if the first one is a disappointment.

i don’t know what some of you people have been paying attention to, but ryan has been sober for almost two years now and has been having some amazing shows. if you think you deserve something better that almost two hours, you try to play a set longer than that. i helped do some engineering work on a live album yet to be released and he was great to work with. and i’ve seen numerous shows that are always amazing. granted bacj in the day, he might have shown up a little toasted, but how many artists do you know that are sober and staying that way. he’s an amazing songwriter and performer.
