On the Charts: U2’s “No Line on the Horizon” Is Number One in 2009’s Biggest Week

3/11/09, 11:29 am EST

The Big News: As expected, U2’s five-star No Line on the Horizon soared to the top of the charts in its debut week, selling 484,000 copies to give the current Rolling Stone cover stars their second-best U.S. debut ever, more than doubling the sales of 2009’s previous highest-selling debut, Bruce Springsteen’s Working on a Dream. The album fell slightly under industry expectation of a half million copies, but Universal Music Group’s Australian division, who accidentally leaked the LP weeks before its release, might be to blame. While 2004’s How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb sold 840,000 copies its first week (with no recession affecting the industry), No Line’s totals fall more in line with U2’s career trajectory, as All That You Can’t Leave Behind sold roughly 428,000 copies when it hit the charts in 2000. And it goes without saying, but Taylor Swift’s Fearless was finally knocked off the top spot, coming in at Number Two with a distant 52,000 copies.

Debuts: Another big surprise on the charts was the number three placement of Neko Case’s stellar Middle Cyclone, especially considering Case’s only other previous appearance on the charts was a number 54 debut for 2006’s Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. Other rookies include the Watchmen soundtrack at 36, Rush’s Retrospective 3 at 47 and Thin Lizzy’s Still Dangerous plotting jailbreaks at 189.

Last Week’s Heroes: Lady Gaga’s Fame continues its climb, improving on last week’s totals by 30 percent to jump from seven to four. Lamb of God’s Wrath fell from two to 12 and the Jonas Brothers3D Concert Experience dropped three to 15 after both debuted last week. Besides U2’s best-selling week of the 2009 and Fearless, no other album could even muster 50,000 in sales. And how bad are things for Chris Brown? His Exclusive isn’t even generating enough sales to bypass the 2,690 units sold by this week’s 200th-ranked album.

god this band sucks | 3/11/2009, 12:24 pm EST

this album is terrible, and they ARE NOT rock’s biggest band

Hone | 3/11/2009, 12:34 pm EST

U2 are still the highest mountain…

sure... | 3/11/2009, 12:38 pm EST

almost half-million sold in one week. yeah, this band sucks. tool.

U2 Rock again | 3/11/2009, 12:41 pm EST

U2 has become so huge that every little ant comes crawling out of their hole to slag them off. I have never seen such anger spewed at a band. Great album!

DavetheMan | 3/11/2009, 12:43 pm EST

What an interesting record to listen to. U2 really stretched the boundries here and broke some new ground. This release shows how stale and dead the rest of rock music is. Good one U2.

eightball | 3/11/2009, 12:47 pm EST

this is album wasnt terrible, just different. Though not as good as previous records, it was still good. who else could be called rock’s biggest band (other than AC/DC)?

Timmy | 3/11/2009, 1:28 pm EST

After serval listens, I say it measures up to be a solid album with 2 fantastic songs included – Magnificent and Breathe. I absolutely love these 2 songs. Instant classics as far as I’m concern.

Timmy | 3/11/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Anonymous | 3/11/2009, 1:44 pm EST

No offense or anything to U2 fans, but I could much easily put together a 2-disc retrospective of Pearl Jam or Radiohead. The only difference between those three is that U2 is the only one who really cares about being labeled the “biggest band on the planet.” I remember a time when they thought of walking away because they just weren’t good anymore. If Pearl Jam or Radiohead has half the commercial aspirations, “biggest band on the planet” discussion would NEVER include U2. Pearl Jam had it once, they knowingly walked away from it.

Hole | 3/11/2009, 1:45 pm EST

Att:God This Band sucks::: You are a fucking idiot…go listen to your Disturbed cd and have mommy make you a sandwich. U2 is the biggest band in the world…

Pray to God | 3/11/2009, 1:46 pm EST

Yeah you talking about god… pray to him because maybe he can help you. U2 are what we call innovators. Always fresh and always always good! From the eighties until now bands try to copy that sound. Any one ever hear Coldplay compared? Yeah because U2 is the best! Album is good because of the change and the mix. I’m still in love with them after all these years and I look forward the new sounds not songs that sound like the good old days.

pete | 3/11/2009, 1:47 pm EST

Let’s not forget that Atomic Bomb came out in Thanksgiving week, so a steep falloff from that total was to be expected, recession or not.

Still not loving the album, though.

Best band ever | 3/11/2009, 1:58 pm EST

Laughing off the haters…. No one else even comes close. They have been the best band in the world since the Police handed them the crown…..

Stuck in a moment | 3/11/2009, 1:59 pm EST

Obviously some people like to be stuck in a moment and never get out. Not U2 and not me. My love for this band out lasted my 21 year marriage and why, it changes and grows with ever year it keeps together. If you have trouble seeing why they are considered one of the greatest then yeah as you mention god you should pray to him. ( Has anyone ever heard Coldplay compared to them? Wonder why?) So enjoy the mix get a range of music in one album, travel the world with the guys and see why those Irish guys are so very awesome.

George | 3/11/2009, 2:02 pm EST

Great album. I love Pearl Jam too, but ‘knowingly walked away’ from being the biggest band? How? They just stopped being great and are no just very good. Biggest band = massive album and sell-out world tours. U2 has them. Best band = critical and fan reactions. Their previous album won more grammys than Thriller and the new one has 5 star reviews the world over. I wish bands like Pearl Jam stepped up to the plate!

andrea from piacenza, italy | 3/11/2009, 2:07 pm EST

Well done, U2! No line on the horizon is a new masterpiece. Brilliant!

Sean | 3/11/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Not what I expected, but I am okay with that. I agree with Timmy, Magnificent and Breathe are great songs. The rest, I am not too sure of yet.

whalespoon | 3/11/2009, 2:35 pm EST

To U2 Rock Again–the only band that I can think of that can generate as much hatred as U2 is (was?) probably Creed, and they are certainly not in the same league. U2 has their shortcomings, but they are the most consistantly interesting band of the last 30 years. Even more than Springsteen, U2 makes you know that you can still be a vital rock artist when you hit middle age. I cannot wait for the tour!

Steve | 3/11/2009, 2:35 pm EST

Please take note: album sales do not and never have reflected an album’s greatness nor does a Rolling Stone 5 star review. U2 could sing the phone book and it would ride the number one spot for a few weeks. I’ll be honest I’ve yet to hear the album in its entirety so I can’t give an honest critique of it but I can guess there will be the usual backlash as it fades into oblivion. From what I’ve heard it’s alright, but they usual U2 hype is just that. Hype.

U2 Dude | 3/11/2009, 2:39 pm EST

The tour should be a lot fun. I heard that Magnificent is going to be their next single. Does anyone know if this is true?…I hope so.

Brian | 3/11/2009, 2:41 pm EST

So happy for Neko. She deserves this.

Again, selling records does not equal quality. Nickelback, Jonas Bros., High School Musical, Brit Spears. There’s your evidence. Tons of records sold, zero quality.

I, of course, am not slagging U2 into that category, as I’m no fool. Nice debut, and as Hine said, they really are the highest mountain.

David Sherrard | 3/11/2009, 2:54 pm EST

U2 should never have written the album with Eno/Lanois, produce it OK, but…..It’s as exciting as a pillow fight with my grandmother. And I’m a Fan!
I do have to point out that Metallica’s Death Magnetic sold 490,000 in just 4 days! Now everyone, go ahead and bite my head off! Bring it on!

richard decker | 3/11/2009, 3:19 pm EST

My two favorite bands ever, U2 and Metallica, are in my opinion the ones that generate most discussion, be it admiration or scorn. They also generate the most sales and both have been around for thirty years and have their place in the hall of fame. These bands´impact on the new bands coming up is unmeasurable. Sadly, the music industry has depended on them for so long, and very few bands are coming out to repalce or fill in for them.

Jeff Tweedy | 3/11/2009, 3:21 pm EST

My band is way better than U2.

Chris Cornell | 3/11/2009, 3:24 pm EST

Wish I could still make a record that mattered.

Gaelic Storm | 3/11/2009, 3:28 pm EST

Our Irish band is way better than U-Who! We are the true beer swigging Irish men who sing like the streets of Dublin truely are. U-Who does nothing anymore and have not made a relevant album since Achtung Baby. Check out our newest What’s The Rumpus? #1 on the World Music Charts for weeks.

David Sherrard | 3/11/2009, 3:36 pm EST

Nicely put Richard Decker!

Rocky | 3/11/2009, 3:45 pm EST

Bottom line:
U2’s new album is good. Maybe its not great like joshua tree and atchung baby, but its good. Its unfair to say that they are overrated. U2 still brings it! Not even the rolling stones or madonna can say that. They are contemporary and relevent. Their next single will be a testament to that.

Mike | 3/11/2009, 3:57 pm EST

Magnificent all the way!!!!

Karen | 3/11/2009, 4:10 pm EST

That’s their best song on the album.

NYC Mike | 3/11/2009, 4:51 pm EST

is U2 still planning on touring with Def Karaoke Jam this summer?

Metallica and U2 | 3/11/2009, 4:51 pm EST

Two best bands. I would go with Metallica though on influence and fanbase.

Poopy Pants | 3/11/2009, 4:58 pm EST

Screw U2. Lady Gaga is the greatest artist of all time and her album will climb up to # 1 and pass up U2 by next week! Lady Gaga rulez!

TOM | 3/11/2009, 5:06 pm EST

Love’em or hate’em, you’ve got to respect their accomplishments. Anybody that doesn’t like them just needs to see them live. Then you can make an opinion.

killemall | 3/11/2009, 5:08 pm EST

U2 has been around almost 30 years with the same exact lineup.
I would bet my life that no other band or singer in the Billboard 200 will be around 30 years from now. Let alone debuting at the top of the chart. Taylor Swift will probably be posing for Playboy, hoping for a comeback. AMAZING!

U2 are not afraid to move with the times, thats the difference, their new album is current and relevant, goes beyond the ‘classic U2′ sound but its definitely U2 – you need to listen to the album a few times, its a grower and LIVE these songs are going to be ‘Magnificent’:P my current fav :) p.s. U2Dude yes this is the next single, they are goint to Fez to do video for it, to be released May 1st (I have been hearing it on radio already)
Well done boys! :) The new album is number 1 here too! :)
It looks amazing the U2 360 (stage) and I already know how great they will be LIVE! I can’t wait! yay, for all things U2 again!!! PLEASE DON’T FORGET AUSTRALIA THIS TOUR!!

U2FKGRULES! | 3/11/2009, 9:08 pm EST

Well deserved place at no. 1!

I was about to turn away from U2 after two disappointing albums, but now they came out with an astonishing album with lots of textures, layers, darkness, moods and depth.

The more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. The best album since Achtung Baby. U2 really is showing how music is done to the talentless kid musicians of today making money only because of media exposure and vulgarity.

Amy | 3/11/2009, 9:56 pm EST

Yeah TOM – I agree…it’s all about seeing them live! And you gotta love when they release an album, whether it’s as good as Joshua Tree or Achtung baby or not, because a tour follows. U2 has a solid portfolio of music and seeing them live is one of the best experiences I’ve had – twice. I hope I can get tickets this tour. Love ‘em!

Shakespeare | 3/11/2009, 10:42 pm EST

U2 are rocks biggest band! Everyone else are rip-offs! Coldplay even RadioHeads out of left field approach to music is stolen from them!

U2 4 ever | 3/12/2009, 1:24 am EST

Great world human band. They are the ROCK BAND, some people need to read and hear music, or maybe think. I don’t know any band that does or will do the same as U2. They do magic, marketing will do bussines. Marketing can make big sales, but U2 can do magic on your ears and mind.
People who hate U2 and criticize nonsense, simply recognize that they are the best. U2 writes music that is on air at this time, I am proud to be contemporary, and feeling this launch, I missed the “Achtung Baby,” from Zooropa hedgehog skin when I hear a new song :P

Pam Bonamusica | 3/12/2009, 7:37 am EST

U2 are nr.1 in many countries and in my opinion they really deserve it. The most essential things for great art are talent, ambition and humanity and U2 have plenty of it. One of my favourite songs is “Unknown Caller”: In the book I read that it´s written from the point of view of a war veteran. In some ways there´s darkness and light at the same time. The line “I was lost between the midnight and the dawning” expresses a feeling of despair, but a sort of joy returns through those unusual voices coming from the phone. I think this is one of those songs that reveals what U2 are capeable of: Turning sorrow into hope or even joy and this is what makes them so great.

I´m looking forward to the tour! I loved the performances in the Letterman show, particularly “Magnificent” was moving!

FJ | 3/12/2009, 8:39 am EST

the new Oasis album from last year is just as good, and The Verve’s Forth is even better than both of those. Surprised with a 4-star review that no one mentioned Communion from Soundtrack Of Our Lives. Likely didn’t sell that well but had to have been in the top 100?

I love Rush but why mention yet another compilation album? Because it included a live DVD? I love that band but they have gone live-show happy over the past ten years because their album releases are further and further apart.

Anonymous | 3/12/2009, 10:56 am EST

No line=forgetful

If it wasn’t for known producers holding their hands every step of the way during album productions, this band would be lost. They are falling prey to the syndrome where they focus more on the sound of the album then the actual art. And U2 aren’t even close to Radiohead. Radiohead has knocked the music industy on it’s ass four times. Just look what happened to all the popular rock bands directly after OK Computer. The album qualities fell off dramatically. And now they’re making others rethink their own business models. From an artist standpoint U2 can’t be mentioned in the same breathe.

Sorry.

Kim | 3/12/2009, 11:47 am EST

I just heard Magnificent on the radio. It sounded amazing. Bravo! 2009 is going to be the year that U2 has effected the music industry yet again. I expect their tour to be amazing.

Scott | 3/12/2009, 12:06 pm EST

I’m a long time U2 fan…not necessarily a die-hard fan (as I prefer hard rock, Metallica, Guns N Roses, etc…, to pop-rock) but I have to say that this is one of the best records I’ve heard this year. My tope 3 being Chinese Democracy, Death Magnetic and then probably No Line… My favorite songs on the disc are as follows: Breathe, title track, Unknown Caller and White Snow. Honestly, I dont get Magnificent…its catchy and all, but I dont feel it, it is reminiscent of some of their old standards, but in my opinion, pales by comparison. The aforementioned songs have a new edge to them which makes them current while, at the same time maintaining the patented U2 sound. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. I give Death Magnetic 4 out of 5 stars. I give Chinese Democracy 5 out of 5 stars. I’m also looking forward to Eminem and Dr Dre’s upcoming releases as well as Courney Love’s: Nobody’s Daughter.

George | 3/12/2009, 1:46 pm EST

Magnificent is their “Beautiful Day” on this album. It’s going to be the track that ultimately carries the CD. Other songs I really liked were Breathe, Crazy and the title track. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Joe420 | 3/12/2009, 10:26 pm EST

this is the most listenable album by u2 since achtung baby, not one weak track here.. a big improvement over atomic bomb and that wasn’t a bad album.. this is just a marvel of sound and not necessarily lyrically good, it doesn’t have to be if the music is over the top.. way to go u2 can’t wait to see you in chicago!!

San | 3/12/2009, 10:49 pm EST

To George – Pearl Jam were easily the biggest band in the world when VS was released. Back then, it set the record for first week sales with over 900,000 copies. This without any promotion or music videos. Vitalogy was huge too, still with no promotion. They chose not to make videos and do interviews; so yes, they knowingly walked away from being the biggest band in the world. U2 give a shit about being popular and suck on the corporate tit more than anyone. Nothing bad about it, but they go the extra mile when it comes to promotion.

What matters is the music, and in my opinion Pearl Jam blows U2 out of the water. Take it for what it worth …

Emi | 3/13/2009, 4:18 pm EST

The album is awesome and yes the are the BIGGEST ROCK BAND!!!
U2 THE BEST!!!!!!

Emi | 3/13/2009, 4:22 pm EST

Starrlight | 3/13/2009, 7:04 pm EST

Oh look, the obligatory mental masterbators are out insulting U2.

Good to know the world is still round, hell is still hot and 90% of music fans have shit all taste and the attention span of a gnat.

Anonymous | 3/13/2009, 10:09 pm EST

It has been quite the ride since that memorable show at Malibu and Ritz in 1981.
U2 have done it again with the new album.
Good to see the classic artists coming back and showing the world how it is done.
Regardless if it is Metallica,AC/DC,GNR,Rush,The Eagles….

re: u2 new album
GOD, it’s great to have something worth listening to again!

oh no not bono again | 3/14/2009, 6:29 pm EST

what planet are most of you people from? no line on the horizon is at best, sub-standard predictable fare from a band with absolutely nothing left to say except, ‘give us your money’. they are much like the stones in this respect except the stones at least put on a fine live show whereas us is crap live and bono is NO jagger! the stones make no pretense about being in it for the money and like u2 have had nothing musically to say for years. i mean, just listen to the first cut off the album, the ‘boots’ track, it is at best a poor ‘b’ side song; a throwaway. the rest of ‘no line…’ goes downhill fast from there. it is a sterile, cold, unimaginative offering heaped high with technical production to disguise a complete lack of depth in songwriting. no line is a con on the public by u2! and bono has the arrogance to call someone else a wanker recently…talk about the pot calling the kettle black? what surprises me is that even with the aussie radio station releasing no line early, the public still bought half a million copies first week of official release…why?

Dale Sheppard | 3/15/2009, 6:04 am EST

All I can say is – 12 albums in, 30 years as the same 4 piece outfit, with Brian and Danny as 5th and 6th members, and the continual re-inventing of themselves, but holding true to their original form, and incorporating all elements of their music into their latest work, from the early post punk sounds of the late 70’s, to the new wave days of the 80’s, through to the industrial/grunge filled early 90’s, and the ambient/disco revival and trip hop of the late 90’s, to the 80’s revival of the early 2000’s, and the new indie influenced Americana sound of the latter part of this decade, you cannot deny the fact that U2 have consistantly held their ground, rarely sold out, and blended masterfully with all of these musical changes and styles over the course of their career to come out again with a newly renewed energy, and an album that is true to form, that fully completes another cycle in their phenomenal career, that bands like Cold Play and Radiohead can only hope to acheive themselves over the course of the next 10 to 20 years.

melomatic | 3/15/2009, 1:12 pm EST

WAHEN YOUR THE BEST THE HATERS WILL TRY TO TAKE U OUT. TO TEAR U DOWN. THA HATERS SEEM TO HAVE THIS JEALOUSY ABOUT THEM. OPEN URE EARS CLOSE URE EYES AND TUNE IN, HATERS. U2 ARE THE BEST. THEY ROCK. LISTEN TO THIER MESSAGES. TO THE GUITAR TO THE BADD BASS LINES. I HEARD THE NEW ALBUM AS I DOWNED SOME RED STRIPE AND I WAS ASTOUNDED WITH THE DIRECTION THIER SOUND HAS TAKEN THEM. IM GLAD TO BE ALIVE TO LISTEN AND HAVE MYSELF A SPIRITUAL AWAKENING. HATERS: SHUT THE FUCK UP. GO PLAY SOME MARILYN MANSON OR WATEVR ….

oh no not bono again | 3/15/2009, 1:30 pm EST

Is it melomatic or melodramatic? There is simply no coherence in ‘its’ posting but for sure, lots of rant / rave; just like this groupies fave group u2, and no line cd. Go away little person.
As for output, just because someone releases copious amounts of albums etc, does not equate with quality (perfect examples include springsteen, stones, van morrison, etc). It is ALL about the money with the older bands but also too about ego; they actually now believe the hype about themselves…sad (just like many posters on this site).
Seriously folks, post or dont post but why dont you try responding instead of reacting for a change. And speaking of change, maybe melomatic should change its name to melodramatic. Why do I always have to be almost the lone voice of reason, and intelligence most of the time?

interesting | 3/15/2009, 1:42 pm EST

I agree.
This is interesting. It is very interesting.
U2 have become establishment, mainstream, typical, formulistic, business first music second, drained and depleted of originality.
Seriously…SERIOUSLY…take the time to really listen to No Line on the Horizon, and you will hear that there is almost nothing there excpept brass, glass, and glimmer due to technology in the production and arrangement used mainly to hide the inherent weakness in all the songs.
Come on, be honest at least once in your life!
This latest offering from U2 is a great BIG nothing! To prove this they are going out on the road to create a market to sell the product; they are promoting themselves and even their shows are ALL tech gimmicks, brass, glass, and glimmer.
U2 is empty and has been for a long time. Bono is an empty vessel spouting off about world this and world that and in the process has lost whatever little musical talent for creating songs he had. The Joshua Tree had moments but overall is an album that sold as much for its production as the quality of songs. No Line is the same except there are much fewer decent songs on it.
Lets face it, the Emperor (U2) has no clothes!

The Prof | 3/15/2009, 11:49 pm EST

You must not have listened to the same copy of NLOTH that I have. I play the CD in my car and my friends ask me “Who is that?” I say “it’s U2, their album”. They say: “Hmmm, that’s a different sound, I like that.” They now all have the new album. What I’m trying to say is listen to the album itself forget U2 made it. It’s a good record. No need to bash them. It’s kinda like calling Ernest Hemingway a horrible author. People may not like Hemingway, but they respect his abilities.

Claudia | 3/16/2009, 12:51 am EST

Ok people this is the best band
of rock in the world and their new album is a master piece.
NLHO AWESOME!!!

chester | 3/16/2009, 10:29 am EST

A beautiful album and it is heavy too. Has a lot’s of depth. A masterpiece. They sound very tight. What a band. Big music. A great one U2.

interesting | 3/16/2009, 9:30 pm EST

The Freudian choice of ‘Prof’ as a moniker says it all…’head been up academic **s for too long that the noxious fumes have become the norm’. To confirm this, the reference to Hemingway afirms the academic pretense. Hemingway is average to below average. It was his ‘reputation’ in a time period starving for substance that raised him up…by default, and NOT the quality of his work (echos of U2 and the wanker No Line rubbish). Regardless of who you imagine wrote or performed No Line when you close your eyes, crap is still crap! And of course I did not listen to the same copy of No Line as you did…I bought my copy whereas you downloaded your copy from a free university torrent site like all cheap wanabee academics.
Anyway…I digress. a sub-standard offering is a sub-standard offering in anyones language, Hemingways, academic, or otherwise. Crap spells crap regardless, and No Line is crap!

Isai | 3/17/2009, 12:31 am EST

Hey U2 Haters.
If you don’t like the new CD NLHO you don’t have to listen.
Meanwhile for those who love it, let us enjoy because to us,
U2 ROCKS!!!it’s the BEST!!!

interesting | 3/17/2009, 9:03 pm EST

…interesting how, when reasonable minded and informed people (like myself) critique an ‘offering’ (no line…) to the public, thereby trying to educate the rest of society who are not as reasonable or informed as we are, the same rest of society turn on us like a pack of AIG financial ‘advisers’ pigging out at the bonus table for doing wrong things for the wrong reasons?

Side Note: interesting also how a run-on sentence like the previous, can be understood, appreciated, by only reasonable, informed people (like myself).

Anyway…I digress…I have a question, ”Where in any of the posts we, the reasonable, and informed, have used anything like the distasteful rhetoric used by other posters who are not reasonable much less informed (probably about most things but certainly about no line / u2)?” The answer is, we have not. We have simply pointed out that the Emperor (u2) has no clothes, and that no line…, is a marrowless bone akin to a chicken leg scavenged of its meat by a pack of ravenous, carnivorous red warrior ants, and left to dry out in the heat of the Sahara desert at the height of Summer.

I mean, not once did we use words like ‘hate’, ‘anger’, etc. Yet, we are accused of doing exactly that when the facts speak otherwise.

A prophet is never recognized in his own town.

ps: no line is still crap, and u2 are still saying nothing in it, the same as they have said nothing for years. U2 musically and Bono creatively, are as sterile, and empty of offering anything original, creative, worthy, beneficial, noteworthy, etc, much like an AIG financial adviser with each of U2 and AIG having no shame in charging a huge amount of money for nothing!

Magnificent | 3/17/2009, 10:06 pm EST

The No Line on the Horizon song, Magnificent, reminds me of a charity gig in Scotland I attended where Bono made a surprise visit.
The wanker St Andrews University of Scotland was giving Bob Dylan his honorary doctorate. Dylan was seated next to the Chancellor who was boring him with questions about his songs. He was chewing Dylan’s ear off while trying to affect an upper class English accent to minimize his Scottish brogue. Dylan was clearly bored (surprise…eh?), and was thinking that his next action would be to fire his personal assistant for first, seating him next to such a pompous old wanker, and second, for leaving him alone with the old codger.
His affected accent made the Chancellor sound as if a family of haggis had taken up residence in his mouth the night before while he was sleeping, and had laid copious amounts of excrement causing the his breath to waft towards Dylan smelling like the armpit of Oprah after she had jogged through downtown Chicago.
Dylan was in extreme discomfort, but looked down and saw that the Chancellor was getting his shoes polished by a working class low life Irish singer called Bono gleefully plying a trade he learned as a child raised on the streets of Dublin, i.e., licking the boots of the occupying British army.
Bono had a smile from ear to ear as was enjoying a “perk of the shoeshine trade”, i.e., a perfect view up the Chancellors kilt! Mmmmmm, Bono was thinking, “I do love this job”.
Anyway, the Chancellor stops speaking for a second, and Dylan jumps in with a question to shut the old guy up for a second, “Sir”, Dylan says, “I was wondering, is there anything worn under the kilt?” Before the Chancellor could reply, Bono speaks up, “Nothing is worn under the kilt Mr. Dylan, everything is in good working order, and it is all Magnificent!”

Joey | 3/19/2009, 12:35 pm EST

Interesting… you are neither “reasonably minded” nor “informed.” You’re a blow-hard, verbal bully with nothing better to do than to leave three posts within two days on a band you supposedly dislike tremendously and an album you’ve decided is “crap.”

You know, I dislike Coldplay, but you don’t see me wasting my time and others whining about them online while cleverly disguising my discontent as a “critique.”

Good for you… you don’t like the album… you have an opinion.

No go bother someone else with your tired logic.

Acrobat | 3/19/2009, 2:23 pm EST

Opinions are like assholes..

Its So funny that EVERYBUDDY wants to say their opinion about U2-
That is really something-
and they sure must be INTERESTING.

Anyway- The Tour is starting soon and it means Partytime!!
;)

kangaroo baby (aka joey) | 3/19/2009, 7:56 pm EST

joey, joey, queen of posters,
one slice short in his toaster,

joey brainwashed by u2 crap,

known by friends as a pathetic sap,

one day he decided to post,

but just cant take the roast,

joey, joey, child of clay,

joey, joey,

get yourself a life…eh?

crybaby (aka joey) | 3/19/2009, 9:32 pm EST

joey, you are unreasonable, uniformed, a whiner, a blowsoft, a postpacker, and your post is like a turd laid among fresh picked peaches.
hmph, there, i wrote it, i did, too.
what you need is a stint in the armed forces to toughen you up! if not this then a stripping of your clothes, a roll in slow curing epoxy resin followed by a roll in a pile of the many discarded u2 cd’s that litter the garbage dumps, and then a walk through a car wash whereby a thorough waxing is given you!
there…i said this too!
ps: lo line still sucks and is still crap, much like joey.

Joey | 3/20/2009, 11:54 am EST

I don’t know what’s funnier… a guy who apparently hates U2, hates their fans and yet has left something close to seven posts on their new album or the fact that he has balls big enough to tell me to “get a life.”

Is your life so void of sex, companionship, cable TV, masturbation, hobbies or books? With all those big words in your vocuabulary, “Good Bye” has to be in there somewhere.

You’re obviously obsessed with the band, you’ve posted three times as much as anyone else. So guy buy the damn CD and try real hard not to spunk on Bono’s picture on the back of the casing.

oh no its me bono | 3/20/2009, 11:04 pm EST

Joey…oh Joey…stop, please stop. If not for my sake, for your sake. We’ve been blown (not as in the way you would want, you know Joey, to ‘blow’ us) but, blown as in, caught with our pants down (and you know all about this). We have been deposed, the Emperor has no clothes (wanna come over and see Joey…eh?). Give it up Joey, he has your number. Now then, I am off to sup on a ‘point’ (irish for pint) of guinness then back to one of the mansions you and your koind (again…irish for kind) bought for us Joey.
Begorrah!.

gone (aka i am out of here) | 3/21/2009, 12:10 pm EST

i am gone…as in…out of here.

enough is enough!

i still say no line is crap and u2 have nothing left to say and those of you who say different are entitled to your opinions but, you are wrong.

wow…what a reasonable posting from a reasonable poster, eh?

Kelly | 3/21/2009, 1:55 pm EST

I understand why some would post such degrading and malign comments about U2, but to exert so much energy to post such hateful comments is a bit ridiculous, dont you think. Please stop wasting your time posting such comments because although some may backlash, most will just ignore.
I believe U2 is a great band with music that has more to offer than any other pop singer or band out there. That is my opinion.

larry the 'oirish goiy | 3/21/2009, 11:53 pm EST

no line on the horizon is an overhyped (by rolling stone etc), overproduced (by danny boy etc), overprotected (by fans), overaccepted (by fans), overpriced (for what you get), and certaily a complete underachiever (by u2 of course).
the songs are sub-standard, ordinary, lack imagination, and will not stand the test of time.
get over it you u2 defenders…you’ve been conned…AGAIN!

Emely | 3/22/2009, 12:56 pm EST

U2 is the best band in the world
their new CD is awesome very well done and I already have my tickes for the incoming concert!!!
U2 ROCKS!!!

TheNorm | 3/23/2009, 11:35 am EST

“I still say no line is crap and u2 have nothing left to say and those of you who say different are entitled to your opinions but, you are wrong.”

How is that post “reasonable”? Because you just told everyone who doesn’t agree with you? That’s reasonable? I think you need a Funk and Wagnall’s!

PeeWeeWee | 3/23/2009, 11:39 am EST

Larry, I guess you’re opinion must be why they’ve sold 145 million records and every available concert from their new tour has sold out within 24 hours… because people are stupid and you’re a genius…right?

Which is why you waste time changing your name and posting slam after slam on U2…because you’re so smart!

And so is George W. Bush! Hey wait, you sound as retarded as he does! Dubbya, is that YOU? Go back to Crawford and screw a horse!

its me...again | 3/24/2009, 8:07 pm EST

….actually, u2 have NOT sold 145 million albums and neither is ALL the seats on their upcoming tour sold out. nonsense statements like this from dark cinema wankers like peeweewee are thenorm, i.e., exagertaed, unreasonable, and very much like no line on the horizon…crap (oh…and like u2, neither posts have anything to say and never had).
wow…hows that for reasonable?

Joanna | 3/25/2009, 12:03 am EST

Hey guys, I cant’ believe I barely got two tickes for the Boston show for the U2 tour. The CD is amazing what a great rock band.
They also are breaking records selling their concert tickes!
U2 is THE BEST!!!!!

Newb | 3/25/2009, 12:17 am EST

i did check on his info-peeweewee- and…um… he is right. This is coming from an objective POV checking Access Hollywood stuff. I am new to U2. I used to ignore them, but now I recently got snagged with the new album. My friend had it, it was playing in his place. The music itself was great, but what really hooked me where the lyrics. Their allegorial taking toward their music is genius, not anything like the pop stars who can’t sing and need choreography to entertain and impress. I also appreciate their lack of needing an image; they seem so simple and easy to underestimate. Whatever, in the end, I got myself a nice roundup of new music.

its me...again | 3/25/2009, 8:18 pm EST

where did you meet peeweewee to check his ‘info’ newb? was it in his ‘office’, you know, the dark movie theatre? not only are you new to u2 but it appears you are also new to the truth newb, and, common sense objectivity about what constitutes music.
wanker!

the voice of reason | 3/25/2009, 11:39 pm EST

Regarding U2 and their new CD, I have no problem with a chap voicing his opinion. Even if that opinion is as objectionable on occasion as some chaps opinions on this site are. However, the chaps, chapettes, and chapasses who post under various names are getting my dander up!
There, I said it.
So, I suggest all who are being pompous / idiotic (newb, thenorm, kelly), obsequious / idiotic (joey), and are wankers (the rest of you), do the following; go outside to the nearest nuisance dump, and throw yourself into the deepest part of it so you can join / bond fully with that ’substance’ which is the same as the U2 No Line on the Horizon cd, i.e., dumpster crap!
Pretty reasonable, eh?

Kelly | 3/26/2009, 12:57 am EST

Woww why are you sooo frustated because other people like what you don’t? take it easy. Let it go
If we are happy with a rock band.
Look for something to entertaint
yourself!!!
If you don’t like U2 music that’s fine go look for something else to do. Why you sound so frustated and unhappy?

OHMIGOD!! | 3/27/2009, 8:49 pm EST

To those of you who are spending so much time commenting about a band that you dont even like or even hate, I have one question – WHY? Have you nothing better to do with your time then go checking out how an album or ticket sales for an act you despise are doing? Why devote so much time and effort to such an endevour and what do you hope to acheive at the end of it? There’s a precious commodity out there call “a life”, might I suggest you leave the sanctuary of your little hateful bubble and try and grab yourselves one!

For the Haters....... | 3/27/2009, 10:41 pm EST

…..clinging to the hope that the U2 tour will flop -

“However, U2 are still celebrating — after smashing Michael Jackson’s world record for the fastest-selling tour ticket sales ever.

The Irish band sold around 650,000 tickets for their U2360 summer tour between 8am and 5pm on Friday, at speeds of up to 112-a-second.”

Respect!

bite me bono | 3/29/2009, 7:25 pm EST

why do posters who post in support of u2 write that posters who post against u2 are saying they hate u2? where in any posting has anyone including myself wrote they hate u2? where? what we have posted is a simple fact…no line is crap, over produced, filled with weak songs, slickly packaged / promoted, u2 has nothing left to say except ”give us your money suckers”. so…where is there any hate in this?
methinks you protesteth too much u2 wankers.
us has NOT sold out everywhere. no line is crap! u2 live shows are boring. and…and…and…even i am bored, now look what you’ve done.
wankers!

Major J Roland Bs, Fu, Uy, Rtr | 3/29/2009, 11:47 pm EST

I say! I say…this cheps got my blood boiling! He is a rounder, a bounder, and a wide boy of the first, second, and third order!
Why is he writing this stuff n’ nonsense about the bhouys from Eire (Note: Its all ONE Ireland you know…there…I said it!)?
I say we pay him a visit, throw a rope on him, tie him to a large easy chair, pour treacle, molasses, and honey on him (fresh honey…mmm…mmm…), cover him with feathers from a dozen or so albatross (ones who died naturally…naturally of course), and leave him out in the midday sun of the central sahara so the buzzards can feast on him!
What say you me heartys? Are you all game for some good old fashioned trouncing of a bounder?

Hey "Bite Me Bono" | 3/30/2009, 6:07 pm EST

What you say isn’t FACT…it’s just your opinion and saying it over and over and over again isn’t going to make it FACT! That you have the gumption to keep uttering this stuff over and over again and then have the gall to say it’s FACT, just goes to show what a self righteous tosser you are. I suspect you’re Irish and are indulging in Irelands favourite pastime (i.e. begrudgery)
Now be a good chap and go hide under your bridge with all the other trolls!

Fact | 4/1/2009, 11:52 pm EST

fact:

fact:

fact:

fact:

fact:
anyone on this site that says different is living with the trolls, and more than likely is a troll, and so, is a bought groupie of u2

fact:
i am right, all of you are wrong

fact:
rs is wrong with the 5 stars and any reveiwer that actually can tell the difference between good music and no music is saying different from rs

fact:
bite me all of you

fact:

Seriously Dude.... | 4/2/2009, 1:52 pm EST

…….You need to spend less time on here, commenting and reading comments about an album and a band you don’t even like….and spend that time researching what psychosis or neurosis has you coming back here all the time. This obsessive compulsion can’t be healthy! Make an appointment with a good Counsellor…..for your own sake!

but seriously folks.... | 4/2/2009, 5:46 pm EST

but seriously folks, folkesses, folkers, dude, dues, dudettes, et-al, the fact of the matter is, as stated in the usual eloquent manner….
FACT: no line is crap, in particular by the standards of what constitutes an international band of some longevity / success. this is the prime point you u2 diehards are missing…you are being conned.
FACT: there is NO creativity, no re-invention, no imagination, no quality songs, no…no…no…you get the picture. no line is a slick snake oil offering whose foundation is mutton dressed up as lamb.
FACT: i am right, and you are wrong. further, attacking me personally is the sign of people who cannot defend their own weak hypothesis and certainly dont understand of the ones i have postulated upon herein this site. FACT: you have no idea how it feels for someone like me to be sparring with idiots like you who have nothing to spar with!

robmanuk | 4/2/2009, 7:57 pm EST

I have never been interested in haters or the bile they spill. But everyone has an opinion and the right to voice it. Its not a case of an opinion outweighing another. If someone has made up their mind then its not going to be changed by defending yours. Simply put, by reacting to those who differ in opinion your wasting your time. Ignore them, they are here to rile and irritate. Personally I think the new U2 Album NLOTH is fresh, different sounding and deep. Its like Bono has stepped out of the limelight and let the music take the forefront. And even if he was talking about so called world issues, the haters would only react to that. Personally I like the album a lot. Its no achtung baby, but better than HTDAAB. 4 out of 5.

Hey man! | 4/2/2009, 8:37 pm EST

No-ones attacking you personally….we’re just concerned for your mental well being. (How many posts have you left now?) The fact that you also seem to have the need to have the final word is another symptom of mental instability! Your “facts” are wrong by the way. For one thing your statement of:-

“rs is wrong with the 5 stars and any reveiwer that actually can tell the difference between good music and no music is saying different from rs”

is nonsense when you look at the Metacritic website. It gives an average score for all the major reviews for an album by both critics and fans. The average critic score is 72/100 which is obviously very favourable. But the fans score, those given by fans on iTunes, Amazon etc, is 8.2/10. So that’s one “fact” proven to be nonsense.

“fact:
i am right, all of you are wrong”

Sounds like Hitler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein to me.

“fact:
u2 has nothing left to say!”

Like others on here…I wish you had nothing left to say.

“fact:
again…i am the only voice of reason, truth, and fact”

The only voice of reason, truth and fact I’ve seen on here lately is the person who said you need to see a shrink.

(No doubt you’ll be back to try and have the last word. Don’t bother – I certainly wont be around to read it and I doubt if anyone else will. Your arrogance is boring.)

btw, look up “troll” in relation to internet forums. You obviously don’t know what it means.

“The empty can – rattles the most”

ooooh... | 4/3/2009, 8:42 pm EST

ooooh…Hey man (and his other alter egos on this site) is so predictable. Like a gelding he is led here / there / everywhere as easily as u2 leads one of his hands to his pockets to empty them yet again for another contribution to the u2 coffers while his other hand engages with a quick wank while listening to no line.
ooooh…i am not attacking you personally while he casts comments like falling rain on mental instability.
FACT:
Hey man…lets face it, you have no life and you WILL be back because I, complete you, and you have no life without someone like me to live whatever you call a life, through.
I may not like no line or u2 but you simply dont like life, humanity, and most importantly, music, otherwise you would immediately be gnashing and wailing (and wanking) is abject horror at what u2 are again perpetrating on the music industry.
Hey man…ooooh…why dont you stop getting off on me and get off on what this site is all about, i.e., no line and u2, but i guess you enjoy the unsavory pleasure it gives you.
wow…how easy it is to lead such mongrels as Hey man around by the nose, after all, he has it so far up my ass!
okay…you’re up next, wanker!

Major J Roland Bs, Fu, UpU2 | 4/3/2009, 10:40 pm EST

I think No Line on the Horizon sounds a lot like The Planets. I wonder how close Uranus is to Mars on this CD?
Back in Castle Begorrah, County Cork, we have refused to serve Guiness to louts like this cheap shot chep ‘Hey man’. He has gotten my dander up (no easy matter as I usually use Viagra for this…mmm…mmm…mmm).
If I was a quarter the stinker Hey mans breath is, I would grant his obvious goal, and take photos of him cavorting around U2 concerts wearing nothing but discarded toilet paper from the U2 bands portable toilets whilst enjoying something akin to indigestion in that undersized apendage cavorting between his legs.
If I was not a retired gentleman on my estate in Ireland, I would give the rounder a darned good licking (on second thoughts, I wont bother as this is also what he wants). He is a rotter, a wide boy, and a bounder! There, I said it.

Typical Fan | 4/4/2009, 3:11 pm EST

I buy because I like what I like. I dont buy what I dont like. Bottom Line.
PS: This retired Major fellow is beating the pants off the rest of you on this site with his comments. Keep it up you old codger (your comments, that is).

Bored | 4/4/2009, 8:35 pm EST

I am Bored, both in name, and in how I feel at what is going on with music today. Where are the good acts, the good music? This site is testimony to what I write in that why are you getting worked up about a C- minus CD called No Line from a C band, U2? Take it or leave it but, move on already, eh?

Pope Bono the First | 4/5/2009, 2:29 pm EST

I forgive you all.

Hey woman! | 4/5/2009, 8:46 pm EST

Hey man! this is a message from Hey woman!
Seriously Dude, Fact is, god this band sucks! Sure, you are a Poopy Pants, Typical Fan, but seriously folks, No Line and U2 like your postings, are crap!
ps: intelligent use of names to create a posting, eh…eh…eh…eh…eh…eh?

OK! | 4/6/2009, 8:55 am EST

What are the latest sales of the No Line on the Horizon CD? They are disappointing considering all the hooplah.

Download is King | 4/7/2009, 11:18 pm EST

It is no surprise that sales dropped off dramatically for No Line on the Horizon and other new releases. After the first hard core fans buy the usual quarter to half million, someone uploads it on to the net where free loading…oops…free enterprise takes its course. Why else do you think bands go on the road for so long these days? This is where the money is.

Hey Joe! | 4/9/2009, 11:59 pm EST

Sales for No Line on the Horizon are tanking, dropping faster than U2 can rake in their take from their overpriced upcoming tour where their stage show is SO boring. Heck even Britney Spears Circus and current tour are better than these Irish wankers!

Blarney Stone | 4/10/2009, 1:08 pm EST

So what?

So What?

All CD sales these days are tanking. We have gone from multi million CD sales to where, because of technology, when a CD sells a million, it is good, just like the old days.

So, who cares.

I. Disagree | 4/10/2009, 11:39 pm EST

I disagree.

Hey You! | 4/11/2009, 6:35 pm EST

I listened to No Line on the Horizon a few times then less and less and now, its same old same old to me. Not quite a waste of money but close to it.

Anonymous | 4/16/2009, 8:15 pm EST

Why do so many people disagree with so many people about things (e.g., this U2 cd) disagreeable that cause disagreement to increase exponentially?
Why?
The reality is, No Line on the Horizon is pure crap! What is there to disagree about in this simple statement?
What?

I. Disagree | 4/16/2009, 11:49 pm EST

I agree with Anonymous.

Jesus Bruce God | 4/21/2009, 5:19 pm EST

I have listened to “No Line On The Horizon” quite a lot, in private and in my workplace. I have tried to get my head around it. Tried to appreciate it. Tried to reason with it. Tried to just let it flow in to me.
All for nothing. NLOTH is a crummy album. Bono and his colleagues owe their fans an explanation.

Jason Gray | 4/22/2009, 4:43 pm EST

When one of the biggest and best bands in the world spends 4 years making a new record, it seems disingenuous to say it’s crap just because you don’t care for it. Obviously a lot of thought, time, and heart went into this record, so if you don’t like it, it may have more to do with you (and your preferences) than it has to do with the record itself. You may not like it, but it’s highly unlikely that it’s crap (and perhaps arrogant to say that it is)

They Still Got It | 4/28/2009, 7:42 pm EST

Say what you will but U2’s upcoming tour is selling like crazy, they have now tied LZ for second place with the most #1 albums and continue to enjoy huge success world wide. They’re an incredibly talented band who I look forward to seeing in concert. No, I’m not a groupie or a U2 nut. Just somebody who loves their music and respects the bands achievements, last album included. OHMIGOD’s post was spot on.

Hello | 5/11/2009, 5:18 am EST

On the positive side magnificent, unkown caller, and breathe are great songs.

A Evans | 5/19/2009, 1:19 pm EST

There is no message to this Album all noise no soul. When you listen to Achtung, Rattle, zoo, atyclbehind …they aren’t trying to hard, it’s cool meaningful music like no other. This is a rushed mess! I’m a massive fan … but I’m massively dissapointed. I didn’t like it to begin with but force fed it to myself for weeks now I can’t stand it. 40% is genius… The rest is crap. “Crazy” is cringe time u2 become Bon jovi and very sad. Because it’s not first person it’s unpersonal. Guess the bubble burst. Good cos they were getting to arrogant but hopefully they will recover. Don’t try to hard… This is a u2 impersonator album… Everything but it

Rolling Stone is to music, what The Gap is to fashion.

U2 are hypocritical, corporate wankers whose music sounds like dirty water.
