New York Loses Biggest Rock Radio Station (Again): K-Rock Shifts to Top 40

3/10/09, 12:53 pm EST

New York rock radio station 92.3 WXRK “K-Rock” — the former home of Howard Stern in the Big Apple — will reportedly go off the air as of 5 p.m. EST Wednesday, March 11th, and be replaced by WNOW, a Top 40 format (morning jocks Opie & Anthony were fired and won’t be along for the ride). The change marks the second time New York City has lost K-Rock, its biggest rock radio station: after Stern departed for satellite radio, it relaunched in December 2005 as Free-FM, which featured a mostly talk format with rock on the weekends, and briefly, David Lee Roth as a morning-show host. In May 2007, K-Rock returned as a rock station, but shifted its focus from new music to Nineties alternative and classic rock. This week’s change leaves the tri-state area with 101.9 WRXP — “The New York Rock Experience” — as the region’s dominant rock station. WRXP launched its current format in February 2008, and plays classic alternative as well as newer artists.

According to the New York Times, K-Rock’s listenership had fallen to 21st in New York’s Arbitron rankings in the important Age 12-and-above demographic for the month of January. The CBS-owned WNOW, or NOW FM as 92.3 will be known as of tomorrow, will face off against a giant in New York radio in Z100, a Clear Channel-owned Top 40 radio station that’s been around since 1983 and represents the Number Two radio station in the region. CBS Radio has made it a habit in challenging Clear Channel’s Top 40 domination of late, as CBS turned Los Angeles station KLSX into Top 40 to compete against Clear Channel’s KIIS two weeks ago.

The shift to Top 40 represents the direction the entire music industry is heading: While music sales are slumping and radio stations are suffering through their worst years since the 1950s, sales of digital singles have gone through the roof. Top 40 radio caters to that crowd. To promote the new format, NOW FM will reportedly play 10,000 songs in a row of limited commercial interruption, the NYT reports.

The tape deck adapter for my ipod broke a few months ago, but I thought to myself: “no big deal, I’ve got CD’s and radio. No need to buy another.” Yeah, well, fuck that. The only station I have now is the independent WFUV.

FatKat357 | 3/10/2009, 8:04 pm EST

If KRock becomes another Z100 wannabe, where does that leave KRock2? Right now, that station is my strongest line to new, genuinely alternative music.

Yea a big [F][U] to 92.3 Now FM, they won’t be able to compete with 97.1 or 105.1 I give it a few months before those A-Holes at CBS notice that K-Rock at least brought in listeners

Anonymous | 3/11/2009, 7:33 am EST

I’ve listened to 92.3 for ever. Its sad that its not gonna be rock and roll anymore…… F CBS! BRING BACK THE OLD HOWARD STERN AND TO SOME FUNNY SH-T WITH BA BA BOOOEY

v | 3/11/2009, 10:59 am EST

101.9!!!!!

Lisa D | 3/11/2009, 11:24 am EST

It’s bad enough that 92.3 started playing mostly classic rock, & now we have yet another station that plays nothing but ghetto crap??????
What about us hard rock fans? Where do we go from here? 101.9 sucks! 105.5 is hard to get in clearly!!! Worst decision EVER!!!

Naked Dad Dave | 3/11/2009, 11:41 am EST

Howie & Q. Hole Quivers suck ass. O&A are great and I’ll still listen on XM202. My car now has no further need for the pre-set 92.3K-SUK. I agree with the above comment that 90.7 WFUV is all that’s left for NYC. Please remember, “Oh-Bama President Now!”

Bill in NJ | 3/11/2009, 12:04 pm EST

Regarding the ratings, the “important Age 12-and-above demographic” is NOT important to a station like K-Rock (or, really, any other station). The important demographic for K-Rock would be 18-34 males. The 12+ number was cited only because that is freely available to anyone, not just Arbitron subscribers.

My understanding is that their 18-34 male numbers were strong in the morning (with bozos O & A), but not particularly good in other dayparts.

Rich CT | 3/11/2009, 1:09 pm EST

101.9 for the tri state area? are you kidding thats doesnt even come in in CT??!! 102.1, now THATS a rock station, out of Poughkeepsie.

lamer1 | 3/11/2009, 1:42 pm EST

Krock made a great move when they decided to play a broader mix of rock. For a long time they would only be playing the latest few songs (all of which were z100 type preteen pop jams). Right now they have a great mix of classic rock, alternative, and contemporary rock (but I agree they needed more metal and modern hard rock). The worst part about the station were the DJ’s. Basically anyone who spoke on the station were worse than commercials would have been. I would switch the station to listen to commercials rather than sit through Booker or the british guy pretend they were cool.

Ron from Bennington | 3/11/2009, 1:54 pm EST

K-rock will be a rock station in 6 months. It cannot compete with Z100. Im glad O and A are back only on Xm… then we get to here them be themselves instead of getting dumped. F CBS, F Krock, and F Howard for thinking hes still relevant.

bad move | 3/11/2009, 2:05 pm EST

O and A had A class comedians on the show every morning. They were listened to on syndicates all around the globe (yes globe, they had callers from India calling in). Their ratings were just where they were supposed to be, but they get dumped because they dont fit into the new format, which is garbage no talent pop music. It is mindblowing there wont be a place to hear any current alternative or hard rock anymore. Not very happy.

Josh | 3/11/2009, 5:14 pm EST

O and A not on anymore guess theres no reason to wake up early anymore F**K all you SoB rap and hip hop listeners

kristen NY | 3/11/2009, 5:15 pm EST

this is complete and total bullshit!!! i cant believe krock is gone again! now aside from 101.9 and sometimes 104.3 the radio officially blows!! whos in to start a new station??? all kinds of rock.. and only rock!

want to know that 12 year old is listening to the radio while they should be in school. Tell me that!

If they come back again, I won’t support them. They can’t be doing this to us. Everybody doesn’t listen to that crappy Top 40 shit.

John freakin F | 3/11/2009, 6:49 pm EST

Another reason to go to satellite radio.I switched to Sirius/XM. The Boneyard rules.

RoaringMice | 3/11/2009, 8:23 pm EST

They aren’t even as good as Hot-100 – and that’s saying something, because 100.3 sucks. But they’re a poor knock-off of Hot 100.

Please, let 101.9 stay on the air. That, and the Peak 107.1, and long live 97.3 out of Orange County.

NY radio is becoming a vast wasteland. 92.3 has turned into pablum.

I hope it fails, and they bring back K-Rock.

Dom | 3/11/2009, 8:23 pm EST

Just another kick in the nuts to rock fans. I mean seriously, Metallica at 4 p.m. and Justin Timberlake at 5? Go kill your self. I hope they fail like they did last time. Now that Sirius took over XM, and i can get Octane and stuff. Re-opening my account. What a shame.

Anthony | 3/11/2009, 8:31 pm EST

Kflanz | 3/11/2009, 8:49 pm EST

WTF?!!?! how stupid are they?

possiblylatino | 3/11/2009, 8:53 pm EST

Honestly, this really ruined my day. Do we really need another channel dedicated to playing a bunch of no-talents? K-Rock, not only had the best music on radio, but the best shows as well. I know there’s still 101.9 & 104.3, but there’s enough KTUs & Z100s to go around. This is up there with MTV taking down “The Headbanger’s Ball”. Completely useless moves by completely useless minds.

Anthony | 3/11/2009, 9:09 pm EST

“You guys blew it, you had the best station in the tri-state area, Then you had to go and ruin it by cancelling Opie and Anthony, WTF is that about, i hope this station goes into the gutter! … and i garuntee u copy the 100.3 set list, and also i bet u lose 5 million PLUS fans like me.!!!”

Anthony | 3/11/2009, 9:11 pm EST

they have 3 stations deticated to “rap and hip-hop” Like 105.1 … 100.3 … 97.1 now 92.3, and what 1 rock station? u guys kicked ass damn!

Meghann | 3/11/2009, 9:18 pm EST

I am so angry about 92.3 krock leaving. This is not fair to us. I hate this corporate bs! Enough with the stupid top 40 already. Write to CBSRadio or Call cbsradio and leave message to complain

kastanza | 3/11/2009, 9:44 pm EST

thats what they get for not playing buckcherry

Ralph | 3/11/2009, 9:51 pm EST

Great job CBS, you have managed to slap real music lovers (you know…the ones that appreciate talented artists) in the face and create YET ANOTHER station that airs irrelevant music for a demographic that was not a target of KROCK to begin with. Don’t worry…Rock will live on long after your inferior (put kindly) marketing team and executives pass on…That’s the funny thing about Rock (real music by real artists), It will never die.

Really | 3/11/2009, 9:53 pm EST

All I have to say that there’s one preset that I’m going to be changing

Bob Muffin | 3/11/2009, 10:37 pm EST

So I get in my car and have 92.3 already on because i listened to K-Rock yesterday when I went into my car, i heard heartless by Kanye West. So I said my sister must of been screwing around in my car it turns out when i checked the station that it was 92.3. I got so fucking angry that I turned off my radio. Completely ruined my day. I live in Jersey and all I have is WHDA. Fuck all you that listen to rap and shit music. Bring back K-Rock

john | 3/11/2009, 10:37 pm EST

i never post on blogs at all but this is bullshit. i’ve listened to krock just about my whole life and this is the second time it’s gone. terrible. just terrible.

Hell Yeah | 3/11/2009, 11:14 pm EST

WoooooHooooo, finally another station to play Britney Spears. All you haters are screwed. O&A were terrible, now prepare to be assimilated by the Beyonce borg LOL…

Tyler | 3/11/2009, 11:36 pm EST

Public FM Radio = Bullcrap. I’m surprised it’s taken many of you this long to figure out.

Anonymous | 3/11/2009, 11:39 pm EST

Horrible. Horrible. I turned on “K-Rock” to be greeted by Lady Gaga and thought it must be some “flush the format” gag. We really need ANOTHER Z100/KTU format?

SodomizedSquirrel | 3/12/2009, 12:05 am EST

I don’t know about the rest of the loyal listeners, but from this day forward 92.3 will no longer be permitted to be played on my radio. BOYCOTT!!! \m/ ROCK ON \m/

E2 | 3/12/2009, 12:58 am EST

Wow I was greeted by some top 40 song that i’ve already hear about a million times when I flipped to 92.3 thought it was a mistake but I guess not well now its time to invest in one of those ipod for the car thing Radio sucks now all the songs are the same and if a song is somewhat decent it is played to death sooner or later music on the radio will be replaced. Still can’t believe this happened again

Sneakers O'Toole | 3/12/2009, 1:37 am EST

K-Rock was so friggin awesome. Screw rap. Let there be Rock!! It ruined my day when I turned on the radio and got crap. Remember people you can’t spell crap without rap!

Julian | 3/12/2009, 2:10 am EST

I’m sad that K-Rock has left again. I’ve started listening to 101.9 RXP since it started about a year ago, it’s a great station for rock, they play everything. I’m surprised to hear the Velvet Underground and Pixies being played on RXP sometimes. I don’t like everything they play, but I like that they play everything.

Skylark | 3/12/2009, 2:17 am EST

This is such a smack in the face to all those artists and fans who like their music to be rock, alternative, and metal. Doesn’t CBS own a record co. w/ such artists? How do they feel that their music is being shut out in NYC? You’ve got to be kidding me that we really needed another hip hop, Top 40, crappy music radio station! Why can’t they just use another frequency; there’s plenty of static on the radio. The same thing happened to NJ’s 106.3 GRock. Hmmm, is this a plot to get us to buy satellite radio? One station that has always remained true is 89.5 WSOU. Try it.

Jimmy | 3/12/2009, 3:26 am EST

Just what we needed another Z100 a BIG FU to CBS for taking away a great radio staion and putting on CRAP!!!!!!

tawny | 3/12/2009, 3:56 am EST

THANK YOU THANK YOU ! I HAVE HATED EVERY DAY OF K-ROCK! I worked at 92 KTU and loved it. The jerks that came in with K Rock were so macho and animalistic. It’s funny now that they’re going to try to appeal to women. Who cares, whatever they call this IT IS DANCE MUSIC. Yahoo! Now let’s have a exorcism of the building.

STERN SUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so damn happy, I believe in miracles – even if it takes more than two damn decades.

tawny | 3/12/2009, 4:00 am EST

Look at all the foul language by the pottymouthed losers. Oh yeah, that was kRock’s base audience. LOSERS! Stern was and is a loser, and all Krock listeners were losers. They live in some kind of bizarre fantasy world that has nothing to with reality. They think they’re either Stern or some loser rocker. THANK HEAVENS this blight has ended. This is like being in the desert for all the damn years Krock polluted the airways.

HELL YA!

Ramona | 3/12/2009, 6:28 am EST

Man, I’m so disappointed all the good radio stations go off the air and we get this rap crap, good bye Danny, booker and the gang you will be so missed!!!!

Mad as .... | 3/12/2009, 6:58 am EST

92.3 you just lost a listener. O&A were great! We’ll see how long this format lasts, just one more top 40 station, because we don’t have enough of them

Core | 3/12/2009, 7:07 am EST

Dissaster.

T | 3/12/2009, 8:26 am EST

This sucks. What the hell am I gonna listen to? They just lost a listener. And who do they think they are competing with z-100? They will never put them out of business.

miss jaxx | 3/12/2009, 8:30 am EST

I was so over taken when i turned on 92.3 this morning to find out it is now a Z100. That is all we need another Rap&dance radio station. I thought it was some joke only to find out it is not a joke. Very upsetting!!!

gina | 3/12/2009, 9:02 am EST

yesterday morning on my way to work I heard music being played on the station I assumed O&A were on vacation. When I left work at 5pm I put on KROK and heard TI/Rhinna I was like WTF!!??!?!? I am disturbed that once again another good rock n roll station is gone!!!
If they take Q104.3 away I will never listen to the radio again!

JT | 3/12/2009, 9:08 am EST

Does anyone know if this top 40 pop crap change of music affected LA (California)?

Cindy | 3/12/2009, 9:35 am EST

LONG LIVE ROCK!!!! Will NEVER, NEVER, EVER listen to the new station!!!! Top 40 sucks!

Tracey/NJ | 3/12/2009, 9:37 am EST

What a bunch of MORONS! Well, 101.9 has now got my exclusive attention, since every other station available on the dial in my area (Bergen County) sucks. Thanks alot MORONS…

Rachel | 3/12/2009, 9:54 am EST

I am now taking bids for the number 2 preset on my radio..

I truly hope this restructuring is a huge disaster just to prove that this is a mistake.

Out of Touch | 3/12/2009, 9:57 am EST

TO CBS:

Would you rather be the best rock station in NY, or the worst pop station? Way to turn your back on loyal fans.

To Everybody else:

Stop listening to crappy pop music. This would have never happened if you didn’t.

hicksville4tw | 3/12/2009, 10:22 am EST

yeah im pretty pissed about this. i say the whole tristate starts a facebook petition or something. ive never even really heard about 101.9 before and now i gotta dive right into that, with the ocasianal wbab or q104 tune in. but i’ve been lsitening to krock since i knew how to work the radio, and now its gonna be a station my girlfriend will turn on and piss me off when she does =(.

NMNJ | 3/12/2009, 11:46 am EST

I live in Monmouth County NJ. We also lost G-ROCK radio a few months ago. And now it’s K-ROCK. I have two stations in my car to reprogram and have no good alternatives.

JerseyJim | 3/12/2009, 12:21 pm EST

Note to all CBS Executives: Get a clue. You think you will make more money bringing in another Top 40 station? Wrong. You tried Jack FM and 92 Free FM already and did it work?…. hmmm NO! What ever happened to the saying “If it works, don’t fix it.”? You royally F’d up this time. We’ll all be waiting unitl you come to your senses. Unitl then I hope you’re constantly harrassed over your phone line (212) 846-3939. —- Everyone Boycott 92.3 now. NOW.

Try Seton Hall’s Pirate Radio on 89.5.

tonton | 3/12/2009, 12:41 pm EST

This can be catagorized under “FAIL”. Way to kill my mornings driving to work.. If you think your G-rated radio is going to do it, think again.

SIRocker | 3/12/2009, 12:54 pm EST

WTF!!!
Idiots!!! What is wrong with you people? The only station actually playing MUSIC is gone. NOW KTU and Z100 play Pop crap and remixes of remixes of remixes of crappy pop. Anyone who considers that to be music has no clue. 104.3 is always good but half the artists they play are dead. I guess I’ll try 101.9. I blame the recession on ignorant americans obsession of reality tv and pop music. Only in this country would a Britney Spears be a top selling artist. She is talentless like most other pop artists who rely on choreographed dances to distract the public and digital enhancement to sound good.

brick from NYC | 3/12/2009, 12:55 pm EST

K Rock hasnt been that good in a years, anyway. If you want to hear excellent new and classic rock, tune in to 101.9 RXP. It’s the best thing to happen to New York radio that I can think of. I will hardly even notice K-Rock is off the air because I have 101.9 to fill my head with the best music out there. Fear not, K-rockers, just make the switch. What choice do you have?

brick from NYC | 3/12/2009, 12:57 pm EST

PS: DJ’s at 101.9 pic the music they want to play, and they play album tracks and tons of local music. You will be converted. Plus we got Matt Pinfield (genius)

SIRocker | 3/12/2009, 12:58 pm EST

Seriously…..Where do I go to listen to FooFighters, RedHotChilliPeppers, The Killers,…etc?

Vinny P | 3/12/2009, 1:13 pm EST

This really is bull, we lost Krock for like 2 damn years and finally got it back, and i actually listened to radio again. But now, its going to something even worse than free fm was, now its going pop… id rather hear talking than that crap. BRING BACK THE ROCK!

Vinny P | 3/12/2009, 1:18 pm EST

And one more thing, if I ever hear that f***ing station being played i will physically hurt whoever is listening to it.

Siriusstuff | 3/12/2009, 1:21 pm EST

I hope everyone decides to really look into Satellite radio. It really is so much better than terrestrial radio. Its the only place where you can get everything from classical music to heavy metal as well as comedy and the great Howard Stern. And the best part is that each genre has a station dedicated to it where they dont feel the pressures of ratings and can focus on playing good music. I’m telling you everyone has to turn their back on FM radio and screw them like they have been screwing people for years… Sirius is worth every penny….

Mike from Queens | 3/12/2009, 1:53 pm EST

You’re never going to be bigger than z100, cbs. You took the only head banging rock station away from you’re loyal listeners, who came back even after the 2 year absence. I’m really upset, and I hope this new idea goes under SOON! BRING BACK K-ROCK!!!

Mike | 3/12/2009, 2:19 pm EST

I live in south NJ and 101.9 barely comes in…with the economy some of us can’t shell out the extra money for satellite radio and the monthly sub., or buy an HD radio reciever. BRING BACK K-ROCK!

SodomizedSquirrel | 3/12/2009, 2:20 pm EST

No worries fellow rockers, it will be back on soon enough. And to all you haters, we will have the LAST laugh. Enjoy it while you can, this happened before and they felt stupid back then and our station came back. Hang in there.\m/ \m/

MILLIE | 3/12/2009, 2:34 pm EST

I HATE LOOSING K ROCK AGAIN! BRING BACK ROCK!!! THE STATION IS PLAYING CRAP NOW, THE SAME CRAP EVERY OTHER STATION IS PLAYING. K-ROCK WAS DIFFERENT!!!!SETON HALL IS GOOD THOUGH

Aylin | 3/12/2009, 2:40 pm EST

Ok so I get in my car and I here Akon or TI or whatever crap that was on. I thought I had Z100 on by accident. Then I realized what happened. This switch of format completely ruined my day and pissed me off. Does anyone understand we DON’T need another TOP 40 station. We already have Z100 & KTU and ALL the other Sh*t stations. I am SO SICK of Government and Corporations controlling us. America USED to be a FREE country…NOT ANYMORE.
NOTE to CBS:
Your digging your own GRAVE. THIS WILL FAIL. ASSHOLES !!!!!!!!!!!!

marc | 3/12/2009, 3:06 pm EST

fucking bullshit what is this fucking NOW 92.3 shit i listened to it and they play the same stupid fucking songs over and over i hope it fails and bring back krock the only good rock station now i have to listen 105.5 and bad but its no krock im reli pissed

Linda | 3/12/2009, 3:25 pm EST

This is such a crock of s**&%…the only damned rock station and those idiot executives change it. Plus they fire O&A…..WTF? They get paid the big bucks to make stupid decisions. Why change to Top 40 LIKE ALL THE OTHER STATIONS. I’ve never heard of 101.9 either, but I will try it. The other stations, 104.3 and 102.7 play all classic rock. I want to hear new stuff. Jerks.

Pam | 3/12/2009, 3:33 pm EST

Enough is enough with the hip hop stations, we need K-Rock for our SANITY!!!

John | 3/12/2009, 3:40 pm EST

I say that we write a petition to get back our station. we the people should decide what is on our radio stations goddamit

BecFromNJ | 3/12/2009, 3:45 pm EST

I’m furious! These rich No-Name companies are slowly taking rock out of the media and replacing it with this conformist pop SHIT! Seriously who needs another z100 clone?

I can’t believe they fired Opie and Anthony. This is ridiculous. Is there any way we can bring back the all mighty K-rock?

Im going crazy over here!

SeanK | 3/12/2009, 3:47 pm EST

Anyone read the article in the New York Times about why they switched? They switched because their “all important demographic” of 12 year olds and up were hurting their ratings. So this is what it comes down to? More top 40 for 12 year old girls? Give me a break. I hope it fails. Just another example of how corporate execs are completely out of touch. Just another reason to go satelite

mike | 3/12/2009, 4:41 pm EST

The new station blows moose cock – and so do those that came up with this brilliant plan.

KROCKER | 3/12/2009, 4:54 pm EST

Whoever made the fucked up decision to take away KROCK is going to regret it! Where else can i find good music?

krock | 3/12/2009, 5:24 pm EST

k rock was awesome and now that crap you call music is on. Come on you lost another listener. good job putting that top 40 crap on. O&A was great, Stern was great, top 40 rap crap not so great. You are now off my radio presets and will never go back on.

gray | 3/12/2009, 5:46 pm EST

holy crap! the biggest city in the world and we dont have a rock station it sucks i hope this new station fails and fails hard! how much pop can you hear!! poor poor decision!

Anonymous | 3/12/2009, 5:52 pm EST

This is some bullshit. 101.9 IS NOT THE SAME AS KROCK! I agree with most of krock listeners that we don’t need another fuckin top 40 format, with the bullshit music they play. Krock was not about Opie and Anthony, it was about the music. No other station plays the genre of music krock played. I am switching to satellite

-Sky

moegeemac | 3/12/2009, 5:58 pm EST

this sucks. we are left with 104.3 which plays bruce springsteen all day and 101.9 which is marginally better. this sucks really bad. guess i will have to pay for radio via satellite.

Rachel | 3/12/2009, 5:59 pm EST

I wake up this morning and I do not want to hear Akon on 92.3. i was like WTF! What am I supposed to listen to?!

??? | 3/12/2009, 7:02 pm EST

i cant fukkin believe this bull crap. i loved O and A, those asses were funny and K rock was the SHYT!!! this is sum rabid bull shyt!

What a fucking joke ass of a radio station
gtfo

Mike | 3/12/2009, 7:15 pm EST

Get Sirius/XM. You will not be disappointed. The best channels are Boneyard, Liquid Metal, and Octane. Worth every penny

jorge g | 3/12/2009, 7:19 pm EST

I can’t believe they take away my only rock stacion and replaced with that hip hop pop shit that z100 plays

Wanted: Rock | 3/12/2009, 7:21 pm EST

Why is this happening. Krock was great, you could go from the foo fighters to the doors in one song it was a great station with variety. I guess Chris Brown is in high demand along with Spears, and Nelly. So lame. Way to go and people wonder why radio sucks now.

Jorge | 3/12/2009, 7:26 pm EST

to the Corporate Masters at CBS/Former 92.3 K-ROCK: You guys F’d up BIG TIME. We do NOT need another stupid hip-hop/top 40/techno crap station. You guys are the biggest bunch of loser sellouts EVER. I hope that your new BS station fails miserably and you Greedy Corporate Idiots are forced into an early retirement, which is more than you people deserve!!!

george X k rock fan | 3/12/2009, 7:32 pm EST

Wow you people really fuckin suck. This is the second time you’ve sold out on your fans.Only to tease us by returning to the RIGHT format then selling out on us again.I hit the pre-set in my car last night and couldn’t fucking believe what I was hearing.I had to switch back a couple of times to make sure I had the right station. Now I can’t listen to my favorite music anymore on radio cuz K rock was the only alt.rock station I pick up.I’ve passed the word on and believe me you have lost a lot more fans than just myself.even if you do tease us again, you won’t have me and a bunch of people I know as fans or listeners.

Camille | 3/12/2009, 7:38 pm EST

we don’t need another Z100! nothing else compares to krock! it was the only station that played zeppelin, metallica, classic rock and new alternative all on one station. =(

Anonymous | 3/12/2009, 7:55 pm EST

WTF…WTF….WTF…..WTF~~~~!! !!!!!
Can’t believe it, can’t really add much as all the other comments pretty much said it all. Rot in hell you corporate bastards. You totally f***ed up my day!!! I will seriously miss this station

Tim O | 3/12/2009, 8:05 pm EST

Fan-F-tastic one more station to play the same music at the same time talk about demographics…If your looking for a new station to stream 1071thebone.fm

K Rock sucks!!!!! To all you fans… you need to stop hating on the top 40’s b/c its what sells. My uncle and I always fought about the radio so now I won the war!!! The new format is awesome!!!!

wtf | 3/12/2009, 8:22 pm EST

this is fucking stupid.

Miguel Gonzalez | 3/12/2009, 8:25 pm EST

Very sad day in New York, when the only station I listened to changed to shit music! Now I’ll have to buy a radio with an i-pod adapter so I could listen to some real music, b/c i will not commit to 92.3 with it’s new format…I think it’s horrible. I hope the station fails and they come to their senses and bring back the best rock station in New York.

Michelle | 3/12/2009, 8:40 pm EST

I turned on my radio in my car, and I hear flippin’ hip hop or rap or whatever it is.

Now I have to find something new D:

K-Rock listener | 3/12/2009, 8:45 pm EST

WTF????? I was furious today when I got in my car ready to listen to some great rock music to only find it was no longer….Top 40??? Are you serious??? I have 4 Sirius subscriptions between my home and cars and when they brought KROCK back last year it was awesome and I was no longer listening to anything but 92.3. So disappointed!!!

lameeee | 3/12/2009, 8:56 pm EST

I don’t understand why they had to put this new format on WXRK. there is empty room on the dial people.. they should have added another teenie bopper station somewhere else for god sakes! and they think they have a chance of beating out z100. hahahahahhaha

Anonymous | 3/12/2009, 9:07 pm EST

gray | 3/12/2009, 9:16 pm EST

how can the best city in thw world have such horrible radio!!!

Angelo | 3/12/2009, 9:27 pm EST

What happened to K-Rock they were the best. Another stupid hip hop station is the worst thing for radio. Why did K-rock leave? What am I supposed to listen to? I have only one option, which is to get Sirius/xm radio.

Anonymous | 3/12/2009, 9:37 pm EST

Oh my god, i thought this was a dream at first. I can’t stand to think that K-Rock, the birthplace of many of my now favorite artists is being replaced by yet another, as Angelo said, “stupid hip hop station” IT’S RIDICULOUS.

Cary The Lone Ranger | 3/12/2009, 9:46 pm EST

There is one important element that we al must recognize….CBS has the right to operate their business for the purpose of making money and a fair return for their investors. Mind you, CBS has had a bad history of making some f**ked up business decisions….1) Selling the Yankees to George Steinbrenner….nice move CBS!! 2) Going for a one person newscast (in NY of all places!!!)around the time of the Dan Rather scandal. 3) Failing to bid enough to renew its contract with the NFL for broadcasting the NFC games, resulting in them sitting out for several years while FOX and NBC broadcasted NFL games while they showed the CBS Sports Spectacular or ice skatng or some other sh*t like that….brilliant move Neal Pilson! 4) Not re-signing Pat Summerall. And now, a change of format AGAIN for this station. They must have brought back Joel Hollander for this decision. CBS Directors & Officers: WAKE THE F**K UP!! Your dependence on an Arbitron statistic (age group of 12+) is no better than you grasping for straws……when K-ROCK played true roots, alternative, organic rock, it led to a product which us New York rock-n-roll fans helped to make K-ROCK New York’s #1 station…..look what it did to WNEW. WPLJ was never a player. WRXP is a good station, but K-Rock had the potential to be so much better.

But you CBS folks are so convinced that you are going to take market share away from Z100 who controls every gum chewing, text messaging, mall hanging, scantily dressed 12 year old female in the metropolitan area. You misinformed directors and officers of CBS Radio…you are living in a delusional world. You folks are carved from the same incompetent high priced executive mold as many of your overpriced contemoraries who make business decisions based on bulls**t cocepts you may have learned in your MBA schools.

Learn a lesson from your past mistakes. It’s not too late. Switch the format back to the original K-ROCK. Give us the product we yearn for. Not the garbage that NOW-FM will be playing. Leave that for Z-100. You can’t beat them.

LISTEN TO US!

Pinecone | 3/12/2009, 9:52 pm EST

This is crazy sh*t. Even though k-rock lost any creativity with today’s rock scene and made 4 of every 5 tunes an oldie, they still helped us all get through the day. Too bad 89.5 is a little weak in the boros, I wish they would boost their signal. This guy matt penfield on 101.9 bullshits way too much but occasionally plays something decent. CBS just doesn’t understand that nobody has more passion for their music than real rock and rollers!

Monica | 3/12/2009, 10:08 pm EST

I’m getting a list of WNOW’s sponsors and buying NOTHING from them

ashley | 3/12/2009, 10:16 pm EST

So now i’m so glad there is another radio station that I can listen to the same 10 songs in a different order now my only salvation to good music gone as i’m driving in my car now i’ll futz around maybe crash my car looking around for all my CD’s.; This new station is pathetic and i’m taking the station off of my preset list boycotting.!!!!!!

Mike | 3/12/2009, 10:17 pm EST

Yeah I put on 92.3 today and I hear Teenie Bop music. What is that! The funny thing is that I flipped from there to Z100 since there is no more O&P and the SAME EXACT song was playing. Radio needs to be different! This happened a few years ago and failed miserably. Bring K-Rock back!

kris | 3/12/2009, 10:53 pm EST

I am so happy that I am not alone. I almost crashed my car on my way home from work trying to fix my radio!! I was on scan for the next hour , nothing!! Now what!!

Josh | 3/12/2009, 10:57 pm EST

What’s the point? We already have Z100, we don’t NEED another Top 40 Station! This is rediculous! K-Rock and 104.3 were the only two stations I ever listen to since my Sirius/XM wire broke. I was holding off getting it repaired, but now I guess I’m going to have to speed that process up because I’ll be damned if I have to be subjected to another corny ass radio station playing music that absolutely SUCKS! Screw CBS… 21st century morons.

Danielle | 3/12/2009, 11:07 pm EST

I am very disappointed to not hear K-Rock anymore –it was a great station, and it’s listeners, like myself, are not all foul mouthed losers!!! I am very well educated, – radio listener who loved listening to K Rock. As for RXP –I tried it, the station’s music is OK, but the dj’s are sooo boring I cannot listen to RXP any longer. I guess Q 104 will be my station of choice.

Danielle | 3/12/2009, 11:07 pm EST

So today I’m flipping through the radio stations and when I get to K-ROCK I hear a song by Pink and think “That’s odd” Only to hear f*ing Britney Spears after and I knew something was wrong. WTF is CBS thinking? Another Z100? So I can listen to the same f*ing songs over and over again?!? Boycott this piece of crap station…if you need a substitute and are close enough to Mercer County listen to WMMR 93.3.

Diego | 3/12/2009, 11:15 pm EST

Someone spilled the italics!

There we go!

Now, time to spill some bold,
VERY STUPID MOVE CBS
Sirius, HERE I COME!

crystal | 3/12/2009, 11:19 pm EST

Wtf k-rock has been out 4 2 many yrz from dem 2 pull somthing like dis again …no more rock on da radio don’t noe wa 2 do …..

xyoxfacex | 3/12/2009, 11:28 pm EST

Ah yes it kind of sucks. But I don’t bother me much, most of the music they used to play was nothing more that popy rock, same thing MTV plays. Maybe it’ll slow down the masses of kids that rush hottopic with their “momys” asking for the latest disturbed. Good ridance.

Diego | 3/12/2009, 11:31 pm EST

Let me clean up the bold mess

Also, I’ll try WRXP before I make the jump to Sirius, if not, SO LONG TERRESTRIAL RADIO!

Ron | 3/12/2009, 11:36 pm EST

Today was a sad day friends… I had to delete 92.3 from my programmed stations. I felt like I just put my dog down. Once again I’m a rock nomad. I can’t believe that the greatest city in the world doesn’t have a rock station!? There is a whole demographic of under-represented 25-40 year-olds out there right now. (You listening advertisers?) How about starting a station that plays the music that made K-Rock great in the first place, 90’s-today rock and alternative? Any takers??

Darryl | 3/12/2009, 11:43 pm EST

I can’t believe that k-rock will not give any warning into letting their listeners know that there going off air. Sad that we have to listen to the same shit all the time. I won my first rock tickets from k-rock. This sucks….

jh | 3/12/2009, 11:45 pm EST

I turned on my radio in the morning……

I thought it was an early april fools joke by opium & anthony when krock started blasting r&b

frank | 3/12/2009, 11:56 pm EST

y would cbs do that they r out of touch who listens to pop music uhhhhh i hate it i want to die cuz of this i deleted 92.3 off my dial it was the saddest day in my life now make this nitemare go away lol

screwtheFCC | 3/12/2009, 11:58 pm EST

NY radio is depressing. Guidos, Cougars and tweenies rejoice, another station to hear Z-100 music! I love how there was no warning as well. What a dumb move! Deleting 92.3 AGAIN from my presets was sad. R.I.P. KRAP and this time don’t come back. CBS could eat a bowl of KRAP as well..How about now?..now?…no wait…now! And to 92.3 NOWie…go back to your office at NOW and die. Seriously..u r mad corny!

alex | 3/13/2009, 12:05 am EST

K rock was one of the few stations in NY with great rock variety. Whats the point of having a bunch of radio stations playing the same bullshit music?

vtamz | 3/13/2009, 12:22 am EST

OOOOOOHHHHH LORD I AM SOOOO PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

92.3 gets me out of bed every morning, NOT kanye or britney or gwen…

WHOEVER THOUGHT OF REPLACING KROCK SHOULD LAY OFF THE DRUGS

good thing i have sirius… CMON CBS, THINK!!!!!!!!!!!! >

Kuro-kun | 3/13/2009, 12:37 am EST

WTF ARE PEOPLE THINKING?!?! KROCK WAS THE BEST ROCK STATION EVER!!!! I LOVED HOWARD STERN AND OPIE & ANHTONY IN THE MORNING AND THEN LISTENING TO NOTHING BUT AWESOME ROCK ALL DAY LONG WHEN I COULD!!! I now have to delete 92.3 from my presets in my car thanks to the dumb f**ks who made all these changes. If there is a petition out there to reinstate 92.3 krock, please post it here. I live in NJ but DHA doesn’t compare to KRock AT ALL. GIVE US BACK OUR GLORIOUS ROCK STATION YOU IDIOTS!!!! >_

Kuro-kun | 3/13/2009, 12:39 am EST

Oh, I also with I had the money to pay for satellite radio now so I can listen to WHAT IS ACTUALLY GOOD! I’m gunna miss Opie & Anthony in the morning on the way to work now. EFF YOU IDIOTS FOR FIRING THEM!!! YOU WOULDN’T KNOW WHAT IS GOOD AND SUCCESSFUL IF IT HIT YOU IN YOUR EFFING FACES!!!

RockFan | 3/13/2009, 12:42 am EST

It’s sad to think that Rock can’t survive in NYC. First we lost WNEW (Where Rock liveD), then we lost CBGBs and now K-Rock. Good thing I have XM. I might have to move to Jersey so I can listen to 105.5. Now that’s a sad commentary!

iWannaRock | 3/13/2009, 12:43 am EST

It’s sad to see 92.3 k-rock go, but to be honest, the radio station has been on the decline. For me, it never recovered from switching to Free-FM (all talking) then back to a rock format. It definitely wasn’t the same when Howard Stern left.

Xian | 3/13/2009, 8:48 am EST

Here’s my last”F,you line” call..
O&A and Jimmy made this soul-sucking commute bearable in the morning. The stuff I heard in the AM had me laughing through the Led Lunch.
Top40 music is the bastardization of America and just adds fuel to a raging fire of conformity and UNoriginality! When you listen to cookie-cutter music, the terrorist win! NYC used to be a beacon of hope for art, the survival of art but advertisors and bean counters help rape us of somehting original and ENJOYABLE!!! F#*K you CBS! F*#k you “now”, and F*#k you ny for letting pop spread like a disease. Last one to leave TURN OUT THE LIGHT!!!!

Anonymous | 3/13/2009, 9:12 am EST

That’s F’up. Now we have to listen to more stupid rap and hip hop as if we don’t have enough of that shit already.

NYer | 3/13/2009, 10:17 am EST

The new format sucks.

Anonymous | 3/13/2009, 10:21 am EST

As many have said already, this just sux! Is there no where in NY i can listen to any sort of metal or hard rock??? And no I’m not freakin buying xm/sirus! I shouldn’t have to! My morning commute now sucks b/c every single station now plays the same exact pop songs. It’s time to start making mix cds so that I can actually listen to something decent in my car on the way to and from work!!! This was such a stupid move and I’m pissed that it was without warning!

anonymous | 3/13/2009, 10:46 am EST

first we lost g-rock 106.3 now k-rock. why don’t they realize that not everyone wants to listen to pop or rap music. if we wanted to we would go to z100 or that hot 97 crap.

chris | 3/13/2009, 11:01 am EST

There is still 101.9 – WRXP

whocares | 3/13/2009, 11:05 am EST

F***ing travesty. I was not even pleased when they were only playing classic and early 90’s rock. I didn’t understand why the were ignoring the more recent years (linkin park, system of a down, slipknot, etc.), but now they took it all away. And I have Sirius XM and not one channel compares to Krock (howard stern era). What the hell is happening to the music industry. The bands are out there but now it’s a pain in the a** to access them.

true believer | 3/13/2009, 11:14 am EST

I really need to get this off my chest. First before anything, I absolutely knew this was going to happen and so did k-rock so I’m really not surprised. I’m not sad to see K-rock go, but what makes me sad is how they’re contributing to the death of rock music. Believe me there’s nothing wrong with playing old rock music, but that’s what Q104.3 was for. They continually decided to neglect the 10’s of thousands of new bands that are out there. I know there’s a lot of crap out there, but there’s also a ton of amazing talent, and K-rock failed to capitalize on it. Instead they simply went to their marketing suits and calculated their risk and reward of playing led zeppelin every day and other music that is 30 years old, c’mon. I believe as a radio station, you just don’t have to uphold the task of making money, and ratings, but you should be concerned with the welfare, preservation, and evolution of the great genre of rock music, the true sound of freedom. Looks like K-rock got theirs…

Anonymous | 3/13/2009, 12:28 pm EST

heya true believer, I’m anonymous from 10:21am. You actually bring up a good point that was bothering me since k-rock came back. But I kept on listening since it’s a bit closer to “harder rock” than wbab. Which now between them and 101.9, they need to up it a bit or else I’m going to loose all faith in that metal and rock will exist on NY stations.

Jessie | 3/13/2009, 12:53 pm EST

This is crap! It’s the only station anyone who listens to rock really has left. 101.9? Never even heard of it…but KROCK was it. Now again people who like rock are left with nothing but pop princess music garbage. And this new station….I’ve listened to it on and off since it aired and heard the same exact rotation over and over…there’s only so many times you can play the same Britney Spears songs before you want to stab your ear drums with q tips!

Cocoflower74 | 3/13/2009, 1:11 pm EST

Okay I used to listen to Krock faithfully when Chris Booker was on and was even a regular caller into the show. Loved the music the station played too. Well after they changed formats the first time, I said no more. I went back after I heard the current format, which was just snatched off the air and now it is this shit pop and hip-hop music. Granted I am fan of most music, but why the fuck do I want to hear the same crap all the damn time. The artist they play now are talentless and couldn’t play an instrument to save their pathetic careers. Krock you will be missed and BITE ME WNOW!!!!!!

Jennifer | 3/13/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Will try 101.9 and re-stock my ipod. I’m not getting satellite I don’t give a damn how great people say it is. I refuse to pay to listen to the damn radio. Bad enough I have to pay to watch the damn tv lol.

Thea~~ SINY | 3/13/2009, 1:58 pm EST

yeah so once again, people that listen to rock music are screwed. i wish 95.9 would put up an antenna closer to new york because thats a real rock station. what about the people who want to hear new rock as well as classic. how about some pantera while we are at it? guess people like us dont count huh.

chris | 3/13/2009, 4:24 pm EST

Its not fair i love 92.3 and now its gone im gonna mis booker.

:-( | 3/13/2009, 5:58 pm EST

This Really sucks! I miss K-rock! OMG, there is no escape from this pop crap!

Paul | 3/13/2009, 6:31 pm EST

When the hell did this happen? Did they say anything about it? I was in my car going to work between 4:45 and 5:00 on Wednesday and there wasnt a word mentioned about it. Either way its retarded, and yet again, talentless music wins…

rock | 3/13/2009, 8:33 pm EST

We need to do something about this. I’m lucky that i can get 93.3 wmmr in philadelphia but it just pisses me off that k-rock is replaced by crap. We have freedom of speech and the right to assembly so i say we got to the doors of 92.3 whatever the hell it is or cbs and start a riot!

The reason that the FCC is allowed to fine regular TV and radio is because regular TV and radio is owned by the American people. The companies that broadcast on regular TV and radio get a license to do so from the FCC. Every certain number of year (I’m not sure the number) these companies’ licenses come up for review. Thse companies are supposed to be serving the public. Instead of looking to serve as many people as possible, they are serving targeted demographic. They aren’t serving the interests of the public anymore. They can make plenty of money doing what they are supposed to do, which is serve the public. Instead their only concerned on the demographic that spends the most money. This translates into more money from them since they make their money through commercials. That’s how they’re supposed to make they’re money. But now they are only serving themselves. And the FCC allows them to get away with it by renewing their licenses. We the people need to tell raise hell with the FCC and demand that these companies don’t get their licenses renewed.

Stop Complaining!!! You don’t have any rock stations on terrestrial radio but don’t want Sirius. New Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, with NO COMMERCIALS. You can get it all for $6.99 a month. Corpoarate America don’t care about us. I personallly don’t like 101.9 or 104.3. Too many commericals and same old songs. I will admit 92.3 was great station but I love Sirius. They care about ALL music listeners!!

Anonymous | 3/13/2009, 8:38 pm EST

this is outragous we should all email cbs radio and tell them how mad we are. but they probably don’t care

supertom | 3/13/2009, 9:05 pm EST

if you guys have been listening to O&A you should have seen this comin months ago. gonna miss O&A, was glad to here em again. cant get sat radio cause i am fuckin unemployed. even burger king is just hiring pretty young girls nowadays to boost sales. not only is rock in the area dying, so is the econmic oppurtunitys for the unemployed male, at least thats the way i see it.

I HATE CBS!!!!!! they took away the only thing we had!!!!! thats everyone at K-Rock!!! Booker was someone that had always inspired me and still does! RADIO IS DEAD!!! no more O & A in the morning! man, O & A got the day started! lemme guess, “now” is not gonna work…and they will bring THE ROCK OF NEW YORK BACK!!!! i hope so! i can’t stand listening to this pop crap. we already have z100, hot 97, ktu, and all that crap. i dunno even know if they exist!

Ming | 3/13/2009, 11:54 pm EST

DAMN, now i am only left with AM sports talk since i only have my radio set on K-Rock (FM) and WFAN (AM). seriously, whats with that? i am beginning to think rock music here in united states is a minority to stupid pop craps. i hope there is a petiton to bring it back. btw, atleast k-rock website still broadcast music, i just happened to heard Smash Pumpkin about 20 mins ago.

Domino | 3/14/2009, 12:22 am EST

Obviously, most of you idoits don’t know anything about the radio business..it’s about money and ratings !!..Rock does not bring money…CHR /Pop is the big paycheck…Good job CBS Radio…Love the new station..screw you all Rock lovers..hahahaha !!

Domino | 3/14/2009, 12:24 am EST

And yes..I do work in the Radio business..not for CBS Radio..but they are my favorite.

robbie | 3/14/2009, 12:48 am EST

now what we need is a fuckin metal station around here. or somthing that plays harder music. theres nothing like that around excpet 1055 and 1043 on friday nights. o well we can dream cant we?

Kim | 3/14/2009, 12:49 am EST

Basically, it’s ridiculous that the variation in music channels is diminishing now. The reason less and less people are listening to the radio, and preferring to buy digital tracks, is because less and less listeners are being catered to as far as their taste in music goes. They are, therefore, being forced to simply purchase (or pirate) what they want online, and hookup their iPods, instead. This leaves less money for radio stations and the radio industry as a whole. Eventually, this trend will continue and radio will be obsolete. Any car you buy will come standard with an Mp3 jack and when you ask if it includes an FM stereo, the salesman will look at you as if you have seven heads. I wonder if 92.3 NOW-FM will hire Seacrest, too.

Anonymous | 3/14/2009, 11:46 am EST

Kroq was always to pansy to play real metal anyway. enter seton hall’s pirate radio @ 89.5FM, hope you’ve got a strong enough reciever, i’ve got a clear signal for the majority of my commute and its the most current metal and punk radio out there

TheBrokenSteps | 3/14/2009, 1:01 pm EST

FUCK BRITNEY SPEARS..that is all

Lily | 3/14/2009, 1:18 pm EST

Top 40 stations are horrible. KROCK was all about rock music. Turning it into another top 40 station will make it a mainstream station. They started doing that before and went back but why trash KROCK completely?

WE WANT KROCK | 3/14/2009, 3:55 pm EST

This is absolute BS! Seriously just what we needed Z100-2.. WTF is wrong with these people!? I haven’t talked to 1 person who was happy about the change. What is becoming of the radio? Rock music is being wiped off the face of the planet! It’s all just Britney Spears pop BS garbage. GOD it makes me want to break something!!

Anonymous | 3/14/2009, 6:48 pm EST

This is all a bunch of BS! There’s no point in listening to the radio anymore. I feel like throwing my stereo out the damn window!

Sean | 3/14/2009, 9:44 pm EST

I go on vacation and come back to find my favorite radio station has turned to S#!t???? WTF CBS? Bring back the rock music and O&A, you freakin morons!

Top40isforweenies | 3/14/2009, 10:26 pm EST

No more K-ROCK in NY? Might as well take away our Yankees and Giants next… WTF?

Anonymous | 3/14/2009, 10:32 pm EST

Seriously, this NOW 92.3 station sucks. i tried listening to but, turned it off in 2 minutes. KROCK was my favorite because it played a variety of classic and new rock. Now this lame pop/hip-hop/rap music has yet again taken over another great station. apparently that music makes more money. its always about the money isn’t it? it should be what the people want, and a rock person, like me, that’s KROCK!

Ms S | 3/15/2009, 12:10 am EST

I will miss O&A. They are funny funny guys.

Give K Rock this much: O&A got a chance to say goodbye — they were on air until about 10am on Monday, more or less saying their final goodbyes.

The airstaff on WCBS-FM didn’t have that luxury back in June of 2005 when the format went over to the failed Jack FM.

Don’t let this die down: make sure this issue stays alive. Let it be well known that we want our station back!

NY doesn't like Rock ?! | 3/15/2009, 12:52 pm EST

That’s what one reporter said on the news as they introduced the new format… WTF R THEY EFFIN CRAZY!!!!!!!!!! The new format sucks, I mean what gives the right for top 40 stations to take over, its ridiculous to not to serve to everyone’s tastes over the open air waves and not just the majority. BRING KROCK BACK!!!!!!!

John | 3/15/2009, 4:55 pm EST

The WNOW call letters are still licensed to Gaffney, South Carolina. There is no real evidence that CBS Radio will be picking these up. Please, Rolling Stone, I wish you would do your research.

Cee | 3/15/2009, 5:51 pm EST

This is bull, seriously..

& it’s not like people aren’t listening to rock, it’s just a lot cheaper to make money off a top 40 format: less songs and no need for djs.

That’s why. -.-

Bridgewater Scuba | 3/15/2009, 6:01 pm EST

Yo, try 94.1 WYSP from philly. It doesn’t come in on radio. But you can stream it. They actually play great music the stuff Krock played. There is also a station in Boston that isn’t bad. I can’t believe it has come down to this. The thing that sucks the most is having to hear them talk about the Eagles and Phillys. Oh well, I need good music. F this is BS. I hate you CBS.

Go Giants and Yanks!!!

mariss | 3/15/2009, 7:09 pm EST

this is soo ridiculous its not even funny. yes there are radio stations out there that play rock, but nothing comes close to the variety that k-rock gave us. there are like a million hip-hop and rap stations and we really dont need any more… they need to bring back k-rock. what do they need this new station for when they have z100?!
i hope nobody listens to the new 92.3 and it fails miserably…

chris | 3/15/2009, 7:49 pm EST

who wants to start a petition to get K-Rock Back!

RyanP | 3/15/2009, 10:30 pm EST

I’m seriously in shock that 92.3 Krock has changed to top 40. Don’t we have enough top 40 stations? Bring back krock!!!!!!!!

Scott | 3/16/2009, 11:03 am EST

“NOW FM will reportedly play 10,000 songs in a row of limited commercial interruption, the NYT reports.”

one problem though is that it’s 10,000 songs on a 500 song loop. all the top 40’s stations play a single to death, then just for good measure they beat it to death just to make sure that everyone i sick of it.

Tim | 3/16/2009, 4:02 pm EST

Only the olds listen to radios. And, yes, I’m old. Just don’t take away my podcasts or satellite!

Lo | 3/16/2009, 4:50 pm EST

I miss the original K-rock. 90’s grunge was awesome too. I give up on radio; I’ll be listening to my Zune. I hate top 40 music. So lame.

pachuco | 3/16/2009, 6:52 pm EST

Texas rock Station KLAQ.com. Same type of KROCK format.

Kevin | 3/16/2009, 9:03 pm EST

Get Sirius!!!! Listening to Bone Yard right now. Eddie Trunk Live is on right now. No commercials and I only pay $6.99 a month for 50 channels that I choice.Octane(new rock), Liquid Metal(Metal), BoneYard(Hard and Heavy classic rock), Lithium(Grunge). There are so much variety!!!

Ian | 3/16/2009, 10:37 pm EST

Ill never listen to 92.3 Now. Not Now, not EVER.

Mp3Listener | 3/16/2009, 10:50 pm EST

What do you expect. Kroq had no clue what good music was. They were playing rock music from the 90’s. I grew up in that era and loved that music but I know that its in the past. There were a ton of new bands out there that never got airplay that could’ve helped that station. The other day they were giving away Paparoach tickets or something like that. WHO THE HELL LISTENS TO PAPAROACH?!?!?!?!?!

Tanya from Dirty Jersey | 3/17/2009, 12:36 pm EST

They are gonna crash and burn.

Douglas | 3/17/2009, 2:07 pm EST

It only lasted about two months, but while it was on, the Booker show was really good. K-Rock’s music did, at times, seem a little dated. But for a radio station, they did play a remarkably high percentage of good songs. We will miss the Booker show. Too bad station management didnt’t allow it to develop and grow.

Anonymous | 3/17/2009, 4:32 pm EST

This is a tragedy. Cant wait to hear lady ga ga 10,000 times in a row.

Patrick | 3/17/2009, 5:57 pm EST

This is a travesty krock has played my type of music with none of that..i never thought id live to see the day that krock had rap on it…..BRING BACK MY KROCK! IF ITS TOO LOUD THEN YOUR TOO OLD!

Sue | 3/17/2009, 8:19 pm EST

I couldn’t believe it when a few days ago I open my radio which is always set on 92.3 and all of a sudden I hear lil jon, I was like wtf? I ran to the radio thinking someone is messing w/ me and changed my station but nope it was 92.3 alright so I’m thinking ok it must be a spoof or something so I wait and listen then they play Britney Spears *cries* UNBELIEVABLE another z100? What for??? I’m still in shock!

Ripper Jack Jones | 3/17/2009, 10:44 pm EST

I stopped listening to K rock years ago, obviously I wasn’t the only one.

Bob | 3/17/2009, 11:58 pm EST

I understand that pop sells but how many more top 40 stations can we have on our airways. They are going to destroy the radio as we know it. i loved the k-rock when Howard was around but now we need some competitors who dont play pop. its amasing how much mind numbing so called music u can hear on different stations. it all sounds the same. the same crap repeated over and over try to listen without your ears literaly becoming numb. you cant spell cRAP without rap.

Carrie | 3/18/2009, 1:20 pm EST

Why is everyone so upset and surprised? KROCK was always a middle-of-the-road station, albeit the only major rock station in the area that didn’t play classic rock (back in the day). The station was doomed to fail when they started with the half-assed playlists of 90s and classic rock after returning from the foray into talk. They lost it when they stopped playing new music and never gave talented DJs (like Booker) the chance to do something different. They lost touch and I’m not surprised everyone stopped listening; I know I did.

Listen to Matt Pinfield & the rest of the DJs on 101.9. He knows his stuff, does great interviews, and they always give play to new artists.

Anonymous | 3/18/2009, 1:50 pm EST

WFUV and The Alternate Side are the only listenable radio in NY now.

Kris | 3/18/2009, 11:05 pm EST

I think their format was best back when howard was on, musicwise at least. I liked opi and anthony much better than him. But even though it wasn’t a great station, it was the best rock station we had. But the all mighty dollar rules. I hope Now 92.3 fails miserably. I heard that krock is still on HD radio, but I don’t have HD radio so I don’t know for sure

Anonymous | 3/19/2009, 12:03 am EST

Listen to 101.9 RXP. Every bit as good (if not better) as K-Rock was.

Alex | 3/19/2009, 7:27 am EST

Oh wtf? i cant lose you again! lol i miss like 2002 and earlier krock when it was like korn limp bizkit aand all that other bs. im over that music now but its still better then the other stations who play the same 3 key hip hop songs of the month by akon. rock is essential we need atleast 3 rock stations. i mean we do have like 10 hip hop/pop stations its rediculous. i would also like to hear some metal stations. fuck it ill try and do it myself! remember this post people you will hear me talknig about this day in a few years when my courses are done in audio… I WILL OWN A METAL STATION/STUDIO! it will be called KCORPSE, in memory of our krock and will play black dahlia murder and emmure and tommorows the day and sky eats airplane etc

billy butters | 3/19/2009, 2:23 pm EST

this is utter dog s h i t. has the world gone crazy? We don’t want more of this top 40 crap. There are already a million f-ing radio stations that play all this repetative beyonce crap. They all sing the same crap over and over and none of them have any talent. Anyone on the planet can sing the phrase “if you like it than put a ring on it” 50,000 times in a row. If you combined all of the beyonce and destiny’s child songs you might actually have 1 total song. This music SUCKS. LAME.

Was anyone REALLY surprised when K-rock got neutered into Now? This is a station that for years, played around with formats and directions. They’ve had epic failures like Penn Gillette, but they’ve also had incredibly talented people like Chris Booker. The fault lies squarely on management. We can blame this on the current recession and yes, that plays a role but K-rock was failing for years now.

Ali | 3/25/2009, 8:01 pm EST

Does anyone realize that not the world and defiantly not in NYC all love suga gum pop and grabby crotch hip-hop? Did we really need another Z100 or KTU?? I don’t think so. Let the true rock stars and fans have there one beloved station…thank you!

eddy | 3/26/2009, 6:37 pm EST

i LOVE the new format rock music is played out . i LOVE 2 hear 50 cent lady gaga britney spears t.i fet justin timberlake on this new 92.3

SEB | 3/26/2009, 9:44 pm EST

Yes, because the tri-state area needs ANOTHER top 40 station. I wasn’t a fan of krock’s new format but at least it was something to listen to after Grock was taken off the radio earlier this year. Now all that’s left is 101.9 and WSOU. Thank goodness for XM and Pandora because: radio.is.dead.

AdamT | 3/29/2009, 5:03 pm EST

Word has it (overheard at the CHR station I intern at) that a major FM outlet in NYC will adopt a country format starting next month. I couldn’t find out which station exactly but it’s supposedly a “new player” from what I heard. I don’t really know what that means. Does anyone? I’ll keep my ears open tomorrow.

Old KROCK Sucked | 3/30/2009, 1:40 pm EST

Think about it. They obviously took it off for a reason. They could never find something that worked over there.

All you ppl who hate the new radio station…. turn off the radio, plug in your cassettes, and SHUT UP!!!!

Bro Cassettes? how old are you? as for you thinking KROCK sucked, no one cares cause if you wanted to listen to your precious pop you could turn to any of the other thousand pop stations out there. as for us rock listeners there wasnt much out there to begin with and now we just lost one of the best AGAIN!!!

Ed R | 4/10/2009, 1:08 am EST

Lame | 4/29/2009, 8:38 pm EST

Worst Radio Station. I still accidently turn the station on by impulse, expecting to hear Pearl Jam, but, instead, I hear the incredibly annoying sound of p-p-p-Poker Face. Someone take this piece of shit radio station off the air. Let the four teenage girls who like the shit listen to Z100, and give us back our music.

Anonymous | 5/1/2009, 2:57 pm EST

Krock went wrong with the old classic rock that they were putting on all the f’n time!!! I like the classics, but come one give me a break!!!! You would think that 92.3 would have learned from the mistakes that they made the first time before they went off…lack of NEW ROCK MUSIC!!!

NYC NEEDS TO HEAR NEW ROCK!!! Putting in a classic or 90’s alt. once in a while is fine, but they went off the deep end by giving any chance for new music to be heard, shutting down the station to another hip-hop r&b disaster.

Streaming Alt. radio like pandora is the only underground way to get in touch with new rock music. I hope for a rock music revolution soon…this is pathetic!

Danny | 5/1/2009, 4:42 pm EST

OK.. How much is the price for me to pay to get my precious K-Rock back working instead those Punks on New FM.. If I want to listen to 92.3 station style,,, I rather go for Z100, witch os way bether.. Now shut that crap and bring the Rock station again, or at least, change the channel number to something else, not “92.3″ if the radio is dead, than bring the clannel down the hole not making 92.3 K-Rock fells like Replaced..

V@L3RIE | 5/15/2009, 6:44 pm EST

no more pop!!!
fuck this new station.

angry valerie | 5/15/2009, 7:07 pm EST

i hate this new FM station. it stinks. i’d do anything to get my beloved 92.3 k-rock station back.
doesn’t anyone understand that what we need is a good rock station like”K-rock”, we don’t need more pop.
pop stinks!!!!

Unfortunately, 92.3 K-Rock was ruined by Mark Chernoff!!! He changed the station’s musical direction from new music and 90’s alternative to classic rock, with a few 90’s hits thrown into the mix. He decided that 20 year olds would rather hear music that their parents and grandparents listened to than new music. The reincarnated K-Rock (May 2007) did NOT have anything such as “The Dysfunctinal Family Picnic” to help promote the station. CBS Radio did everything “on the cheap” with respect to the re-launch of K-Rock, in May of 2007. Despite not investing any $$$ into promoting the re-launch of K-Rock, they had FOUR program directors in less than 18 months!!! Each program director changed the musical direction of K-Rock. Its no wonder the audience they sought NEVER came back. They were in a different musical direction every few months. I think Mark Chernoff’s changes in December of 2008, finished off K-Rock. The older listeners he was seeking had no reason to tune out from Q-104. The younger listeners tuned out because of the played and burned out classic rock songs he featured. All in all, a train wreck. I hope 92.3 NOW FM fails as well!!! They’ve been on 2 1/2 months and the air shifts are still not fully staffed!!! Some people just NEVER learn!!! For me, I no longer listen to FM radio. I listen to XM radio for music!!!

95.1, Danbury’s rock station can also be heard in the NYC area and between 101.9 and 95.1, the K-Rock void has been pretty much filled for me.

Give us K Rock back, please…

Loyal listener since '96 | 5/24/2009, 2:40 pm EST

I’ve been listening to KROCK ever since they started in Jan. ‘96, it was like a revolution in the way I saw music, and that is the reason why I think they pulled it off the air, becuase it got people thinking, now they want people to be brain washed by this new mind numbing crap that does nothing for those who find joy in their soul with music, more pop music? No, it’s just gov’t sanctioned corporate noise to keep the youth in check with nothing to talk about, nothing to think about, nothing to change about.

When I traveled in VT I listened to K-Rock. I tried to find the station today in vain. Now I know why. Darn stupid move. I learned about some good songs on that station. I remember them playing the ting tings last year !!!!

Please bring Krock back we need a rock station not another pop station… there are to many pop stations!!! Doesn’t anybody realize that!!

Samantha | 7/2/2009, 4:24 pm EST

I’m going to state this plain and simple, Krock needs to come back. It was one of the few radio stations that stayed true to real rock and good alternative music, whether classic or present. Every other radiostation you hear is top 40, but none will ever be Krock. Bring it back!

Yup…923 NOW is sucks. I want K-ROCK Back. When K-Rock is gone, I only listen to ITunes Internet Radio Channels.

Dont get me wrong I listen to Krock and it was awsome, but when it left i was sad, when they came back I thought it was cool, but yet again, it changed, this time I am on 1.109 RXP, I like it but god forbid if that leaves then we rock fans are screwed!!! RXP kicks ass!

has any one thought of listening to state or international radios, im sick of listening to lil wayne, rappers cant sing with a very few exceptions. im sick of looking at people dressing with colorful hats and clothes that dont mix looking like a bunch of “payasos”.
on the other hand rock has already spread every where.
one more thing, through history music gets worst and worst starting with classical then jazz then rock then pop and at last hip hop or rap.
rock rocks! hot 97 go get rapped!

Come to New York City, where hope lies. Become rich or just make a great living. Socialize with 170 different nationalities, over 100 variaties in foods and traditions, and over 10 million people in the 4 boroughs.
check out the sights and while you do this, we the people of NYC hope you don’t like music BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE ROCK AND ROLL, we have it all but a rock station…

Kou | 8/19/2009, 2:30 am EST

K-Rock seriously needs to get back on the air. I’m honestly sick of “Hit-Music” dominating the airwaves with their god damn same tracks over and over again. I don’t like switching channels and hearing the same god damn song at the same time.

this is clearly fucking bull shit, k rock should come back to ROCK because it was awesome, not this top 40 bull shit, K ROCK is a lot better, there are too many stations that play top 40, i believe k rock would have so much more listeners and be more successful if they just went back to rock… i was so pissed off that they changed to top 40… just think about all these comments from your listeners and come back to ROCK please, you were the best, NOBODY wants to hear top 40 from 92.3, only rock cause it was the best, 92.3 used to be my first preset because it was the best rock station, now i dont even go to it, because i dont like it, unless i hear K ROCK comes back, then it will go right back to my first pre set

Mark Chernoff, let me tell you something you stinkin retard!!!!!!! I was so happy that k-rock came back in may 07 because I finally had a station to listen to again and now I don’t because of your ignorance of making the station mostly classic rock in december 08…WHAT THE HELL YOU WERE THINKING???????????!!!!!!!!!!! !!! When we as k-rock fans turn on the station, we are expecting to hear guns n’roses, linkin park, blink 182, staind, pearl jam, green day etc…NOT Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seeger, Eric Clapton, Bad Company….DID IT EVER OCCUR TO YOUR MENTALLY RETARDED BRAIN THAT THOSE ARTISTS CAME BE HEARD ON Q104.3???????? HUH??????? Because that station is mainly classic rock. You should never ever be allowed to work at the 92.3 frequency again because of the train wreck mess you made to the station. HOW ELSE DO YOU THINK THE STATION LOST THE LISTNERS YOU STUPID RETARD!!!!!!!!! Due to your mess you made at the station, it’s very clear your ignorance is contagious because look what happened, because of you the cbs radio executive douche bags belived we rather hear top 40 crap all because they saw that’s what has high ratings, when all you needed to do was change things up a bit by having the station play new alternative rock music from artists like Seether which you did and most of the listeners seemed to like the new song by them called Breakdown and if you had the station do the same thing to artists like Smashing Pumpkins, Silverhchair, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam etc…Ratings would’ve gone up in a heartbeat. Garuntee it.

Anyway thanks a lot Mark Retard Chernoff and CBS Radio Douche bags for ripping my and all the other k-rock fans hearts out just when we thought we had a station to listen to again. I hope your new format fails miserably which it will because THERE’S PLENTY OF TOP 40 STATIONS IN NYC YOU RETARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brian | 9/24/2009, 7:47 pm EST

One more thing I’ll say is that I no longer need the radio on unless 92.3 k-rock comes back to the airwaves in NYC again.

john from westchester ny | 10/16/2009, 11:18 pm EST

I remember the day of disgrace, yeah the day when I tunned in to 92.3 krock and instead stupid retarded crap rap, and the no talent beyonce songs were being played. I don’t know what is going on with people nowadays calling “crap” music. Sometimes I feel like pissing over Jay z’s face or taking a dump over lil wayne’s mouth or putting beyonce on fire. I’m tired with this urban crap . Well the best I can do is listen to 101.9 or don’t listen to radio at all. I miss Krock……damn!

guy that listened to krock | 10/26/2009, 11:27 pm EST

day of the change i heard poker face and initially i did not know how 2 react i wanted to send an angry letter askin “Wtf am i suppose 2 listen 2 now?” good thing 101.9 is great, still… cancer to the albert fucken einstein who thought change was good
