Earth, Wind & Fire Team Up With Chicago For Joint Summer Tour

Two more classic acts are teaming up for a 30-city co-headlining tour: Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago will head out together starting June 5th. The two long-lasting bands also set out on a joint tour in 2004-2005. Each night, both groups will perform a full set apiece, then it’ll be Earth, Wind & Fire & Chicago for the final set as all the musicians hit the stage together.

EW&F have enjoyed a renaissance of late, no doubt helped out by big fan President Obama recently having the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers perform at the White House. The prolific Chicago have gone platinum with 25 out of their 30 albums.

We’re calling this the Revolving Door Tour, as if you combined the total number of band members both Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago have employed in the past four decades, it’d be somewhere in the 50s. With the slumping economy expected to seep into the summer touring business, multi-artists tours like Poison, Def Leppard and Cheap Trick and REO Speedwagon, .38 Special and Styx are becoming a necessity on the circuit. The dates for the E,W&F and Chicago tour are below.

June 5 – Orange Beach, AL @ The Amphitheater

Far as the “revolving door” thing goes, note that Chicago has had the same lineup for the past 15 years.

anonymous | 3/11/2009, 12:52 pm EST

I got to see these two groups together a couple of years ago up in Hershey PA and it was by far the best concert I have ever seen. Can’t wait to see them again!!!!!!! :)

Anonymous | 3/11/2009, 4:29 pm EST

I saw EWF as a teenager and then again when these two bands toured together a few years ago–EWF continues to put on a great, great show! Chicago is lacking in the vocal department (will always miss Terry Kath and Peter Cetera–although Robert Lamm can still sing) but those horns–incredible! A must see–you will stand and sing along all night.

Heywould U.Youknow | 3/11/2009, 8:58 pm EST

Obviously you haven’t heard the band since the addition of Bill
Champlin.
CTA’s music has some bite now.

valli/I can’t wait to see EWF and Chicago together. All I talk about is EWF,EWF,EWF. I am truly a number one fan. My boyfriend and I will be there. This will be a number one awesome show.

“Far as the “revolving door” thing goes, note that Chicago has had the same lineup for the past 15 years.”

really?? Walt has had a replacement sax player many times over, so has Lee Loughnane, as well as Jimmy Pankow. The only consistent players are Robert Lamm, Bill Champlin, Keith howland, and jason Scheff (the latter 3 NOt being originals). Tris Imboden has never had a replacement until this year, but that was for a medical necessity. Fact is, if you take the original 7 (Cetera, Kath, Loughnane, lamm, Pankow, Parazaider, Seraphine), then add all the folks who have played in the band since ‘78, you coudl have at least another 2-3 bands by themselves (De Olivia, Dacus, Pinnick, Imboden, Bailey, Howland, Thornberg, Lane, Scheff, Champlin, Kenny Cetera, Kiki Epsen, just to name a FEW).

pitbullstew | 5/17/2009, 9:12 pm EST

so which is it> chicago or ew&F or chicago inc? ot ew&f and frinds or what exactly am I paying for?

caryn57 | 5/19/2009, 11:01 am EST

Are you really comparing Bill Champlin to Terry Kath. Listen to the way he sings the songs that Terry sang there is no comparing them. Chicago never replaced Terry they couldn’t and Robert Lamm should sing all of Terry’s songs.

sweetsweetspam69 | 5/19/2009, 11:26 am EST

No one sings a Terry Kath song like Terry Kath. I agree with caryn57. Robert Lamm is the only one who should sing Terry’s songs. Robert was his friend so he sings with Terry in his mind and his heart. Bill Champlin…sorry but you should stick to your own songs.

Kathfan56 | 5/19/2009, 1:04 pm EST

Terry Kath was a genius on the guitar and a beautiful singer.
Glad that Chicago went on without him but he will never be replaced vocally or otherwise. caryn57 is right on.

SummerOfLove | 5/19/2009, 2:04 pm EST

I knew Terry Kath and you Mr. Champlin are no Terry Kath!

bdyo | 5/19/2009, 4:33 pm EST

Who is Bill Champlin? TK forever.

Anonymous | 5/23/2009, 11:35 am EST

Can’t believe Chicago and EWF aren’t coming to St. Louis. What’s up with that?

Anonymous | 6/2/2009, 9:42 pm EST

who is coming out first

Anonymous | 6/2/2009, 9:42 pm EST

The Spectrum in Philly | 6/3/2009, 2:22 pm EST

Both of these groups are great!!! Saw them both at the Spectrum in Philly and together in AC — They were my favorites as a kid and now together they are awesome. When both groups do “September” is is great!!! Can’t wait to see them again in AC. The Spectrum will live forever!!!! If Chicago brings Cetera back it will take them back to the top. But remember, these guys are now in their 60’s — No longer young kids!!

Sad in St. Louis | 6/4/2009, 12:38 pm EST

???? Why no love for the Loo?? I have never seen either band live…might have to make the trip to KC. I hate it when bands skip us!!

SummerOfLove | 6/4/2009, 2:31 pm EST

Peter Cetera is never coming back to Chicago. Peter loves Peter too much to be in Chicago these days.

caryn57 | 6/4/2009, 9:46 pm EST

Chicago wouldn’t want Peter back, they don’t need him. Chicago is sounding so great and you can see that they really love what they are doing. Peter knows that he would be playing the accordian in a wedding band if he hadn’t been fortunate enough to be asked to be in Chicago.

JerryTheAngel | 6/5/2009, 6:06 pm EST

Chicago and EWF should be ashamed of themselves for not scheduling a show in St Louis. Thanks a lot guys :-(

sandy | 6/8/2009, 2:07 pm EST

Just saw Chicago and EWF in Atlanta Sat. night. Fantastic !! The vocals were weak, especially Chicago’s (sorry, Heywould U.Youknow, but you must have caught them on a rare vocals on night….), but the horns were rocking for both !! Those original Chicago boys can still do it !! Thanks Loughnane, Pankow, and Parazaider !! Both groups come out together, then it’s EWF, then a break, then Chicago, and then back together at the end. We were dancing the whole night !!

Birk | 6/8/2009, 2:34 pm EST

What no Pittsburgh date?!?! For Chicago EWF??? Come on !!!!

Chris McHugh | 6/8/2009, 4:20 pm EST

Whats the current line up
Is Walt playing and JP missing last year in UK.
Thanks

SummerOfLove | 6/9/2009, 12:47 pm EST

Accordion in a wedding band! LOL!
So true caryn57! Do you know Pete?

sandy | 6/9/2009, 2:32 pm EST

Chris McHugh, the three original Chicago horn guys were here in ATL – Walt, James, and Lee – and they sounded great !! Is that what you meant by line up?

Caryn57 | 6/9/2009, 2:41 pm EST

I met him a long time ago in Colorado during their Caribou days.

SummerOfLove | 6/9/2009, 2:51 pm EST

I bet he liked you.

Caryn57 | 6/9/2009, 3:25 pm EST

If he did he had a funny way of showing it…I think I was to feisty for him, I got along much better with Terry.

SummerOfLove | 6/9/2009, 3:31 pm EST

Friends with Terry too? And Bobby?

SummerOfLove | 6/9/2009, 4:56 pm EST

I loved CO.

Caryn57 | 6/9/2009, 5:10 pm EST

I met them all at one time or another during that time. I have really great memories of that time. I think that it is so wonderful that they are still going strong after all these years. I’m going to the show in Denver July 14th, it will be great of course.

Caryn57 | 6/9/2009, 5:24 pm EST

So you spent time in Colorado, when?

SummerOfLove | 6/10/2009, 10:19 am EST

Early to mid 70’s.

Caryn57 | 6/10/2009, 11:40 am EST

Colorado in the 70’s was great there were alot of great people hanging out here and all were pretty easy to meet especially if you were a cute girl.

SummerOfLove | 6/10/2009, 1:52 pm EST

Did you ever go up to the Caribou ranch when they were recording?

swwetsweetspam69 | 6/10/2009, 2:06 pm EST

Hey SummerOfLove
Were you ever up at the Caribou when Chicago was up there?

SummerOfLove | 6/10/2009, 2:13 pm EST

Yes I was. Were you?

sweetsweetspam69 | 6/10/2009, 2:20 pm EST

What were they recording? Did you get to know them well?

Caryn57 | 6/10/2009, 5:21 pm EST

I was up there it was during X and XI

SummerOfLove | 6/11/2009, 1:44 pm EST

I was there for all of the recordings.

SummerOfLove | 6/11/2009, 2:06 pm EST

My girlfriend and I used to spend a lot of time in CO.

Caryn57 | 6/11/2009, 2:24 pm EST

Maybe we were there at the same time. Were you there watching or were you working???

DebG | 6/23/2009, 8:53 am EST

SummerOfLove | 6/24/2009, 1:25 pm EST

DebG- Did you know Terry?

MarchingGirl | 6/26/2009, 11:52 am EST

is anyone knowing the playlist that they aere playling tonight in the Chicago area?

MarchingGirl | 6/26/2009, 11:57 am EST

sorry with the bad spelling!!

GerOhMyGosh | 6/30/2009, 11:52 am EST

Oh wow, that is intense. When I watched Chicago a year or two back, I felt like the only person 18 and under. Wish more of my generation knew what they are missing out on. Now with Earth Wind and Fire, that’s just too much for me to handle!

ck75 | 7/1/2009, 11:14 am EST

Hey SummerOfLove,
Why were you there for all the recordings? Who are you?

Pwizer | 7/1/2009, 3:32 pm EST

Wow …how can they skip St. Louis , central and south Florida? Waaaaaaa

Saw the show last night! | 7/12/2009, 11:31 am EST

WOW…what an awesome show! Both bands were amazing. Although I love Peter Cetera and wish he had been there, the vocals were still great. Robert Lamm is still sexy, too. EWF put on a fantastic show, they had everyone on their feet. At the end, both bands played some of their best songs together and it would bring tears to your eyes, it’s so cool! My only complaint (and this is just me) is for Chicago to not play any of their sappy 80’s hits and stick to the 70’s. I wish so much that I could have seen them back when Terry Kath was alive, his voice melts me. I saw a great youtube video a while back that showed Chicago playing some New Year’s Eve Party, and they did “Wishing You Were Here” with the Beach Boys singing chorus.
Go to the show! It was a great night.

SummerOfLove | 7/13/2009, 1:15 pm EST

Can’t wait for the show tomorrow night. I agree that the 70’s songs have a special feeling to them and Terry is missed at every show. Keith is a helluva guitarist though.

caryn57 | 7/13/2009, 2:39 pm EST

I agree with you SummerOfLove I love hearing the songs from their early albums (CTA-11). I went to a lot of their shows back then and I can remember just how wonderful they sounded I especially loved anything that Terry played or sang. I’m going to the show tomorrow too, so I’ll just try to tune out Bill Champlin when he sings. You’re right about Keith Howland, he is such a great guitarist and I think he channels Terry when he plays.

DawnLA | 7/24/2009, 12:41 pm EST

I wonder why Chicago is not performing their big 80’s hits…my generation who grew up in the 80’s know Chicago mostly for those songs like “Will You Still Love me?”,”If She Would Have Been Faithful,” You Come to My Senses” etc…It doesn’t make sense to me that they perform mostly 70s songs.

AEG Live Stinks | 7/29/2009, 1:29 pm EST

I went to this show last night and the tech crew was the worst EVER! The sound was horrible, very bad mixing, couldn’t hear some vocals, boomy bass, distortion, blown speakers, just terrible. The camera operators had no clue who to focus on, light operator had the same problem. What a shame for the performers who rely upon the tech team to make them look and sound great. Overal a HUGE dissapointment
