“12 For One” CD Deals No More: BMG Music Service Ends In June

3/10/09, 5:32 pm EST

The BMG Music Service — the mail-order company famous for offering CDs at deals like “12 for the price of one” — has revealed in an e-mail to subscribers that they will cease operations on June 30, 2009. The writing seemed to be on the wall in December 2008, when Rolling Stone reported on the company’s announcement that they’d no longer allow new subscribers to sign up; at the time the service said they were “very actively engaged with our existing member base and will be making more changes to serve them.” Instead, three months later BMG Music Service is encouraging current subscribers to join up with sister site yourmusic.com, which offers albums at a discount price of $6.99 with no shipping fees.

In the e-mail, BMG told subscribers, “You will receive one more Featured Selection Announcement email from us” and “You will still be able to shop at bmgmusic.com through May 31, 2009.” However, the service will cease to exist on June 30th, so if you have any “Music Points” or “certificates for free CDs,” you may want to stop hesitating and just order Viva la Vida already. BMG, Columbia House and similar services claimed a large chunk of CD sales in the 1990s. Columbia House stopped selling CDs when it was bought by BMG Direct in 2005; today Columbia House operates as a DVD club.

Even though we haven’t used BMG in more than a decade, news of its demise has filled us with a nostalgic sadness. At one point in the service’s history, BMG offered “10 CDs for the price of half,” meaning you could get 10 albums just for buying one-half priced CD, and that’s it. The total math, after shipping charges, came out to roughly $27 for 10 CDs. Thus, we pretended on the subscription forms that our suburban home was an apartment complex, created a ton of aliases and signed up for the service over 25 times, raking in 250 CDs in the process. It ate up a lot of stamps responding “Not Interested” to each month’s spotlight release mailers, but in the long run it was worth it. Share your fond memories of the music service in the comments.

I ‘accidently’ ended up with several CD’s that I never wanted but ended up loving.

I used to love those stamps with the album covers on them. I had those sticking on everything.

I am currently a member. I have bought a large portion of my collection through BMG. For CD lovers, it was a great way to get music cheaply. BMG RIP!!!!!!

vinyl_blues | 3/11/2009, 2:51 pm EST

Fond of CD’s? Nope. Those cheap, undersized plastic discs give music a bad name.

Vinyl lives.

DavieB | 3/11/2009, 3:12 pm EST

I was in the Columbia Record Club back in the ’70’s. I still have a Marie Osmond album that I forgot to send the postcard back to say “heck no, I don’t want this!” I also had a couple of Captain and Tenille 8 Tracks that showed up for the same reason. “Muskrat, Muskrat, candlelight…” Now I buy exactly what I want on Amazon.

i lied and told them i was 18 back in high school and got my free 12 cds. probably my fault their shutting down

PastyJournalist | 3/11/2009, 5:17 pm EST

Noting terribly illegal for me. I fondly remember cleaning up at BMG when they were doing their ‘80 percent off of everything’ sales and thus getting boxed sets like Led Zep, The Velvet Underground and James Brown’s ‘Star Time’ for about $20 each, including the shipping charge.

kuduie | 3/11/2009, 6:52 pm EST

Ah, all those boxsets, I got. And in Alaska there are no automatic shipments. that’s why I’ve kept my membership for more than a decade. alas…

Eva | 3/12/2009, 3:06 am EST

Gonna miss them. Getting CDs and etc from them was a lot cheaper then paying $20AUS for a single CD in a store.

kim | 3/14/2009, 6:48 pm EST

man, its the end of tangable music… stupid digital. stupid computer crashing… stupid me for not backing up… stupid virus. I actually was just going to try and sign up to recover some of my collection and find they are no more. sad day

RDR | 3/15/2009, 2:40 pm EST

I’ve been a memeber for 10 years and will really miss the service. I purchased hundreds of CDs through BMG. Digital downloads just don’t compare to an actual CD!!

Anonymous | 3/16/2009, 5:16 pm EST

oh crap! I better use my 13 Free CD certificates!

The "Ace" | 3/17/2009, 4:38 pm EST

I was in the BMG club on and off in the late 90’s and in 2006. They had excellent deals for those who waited for them. I liked many of their sales and bought a good deal of my CD’s through them during my membership. They’ll surely be missed!

dmm | 3/18/2009, 1:57 pm EST

I’m still an active member, although I only use one of my three accounts. I’m really going to miss BMG.

Father William | 3/20/2009, 6:50 pm EST

Been a member since 1986. Get two free CDs for life. Thought it would be my life, not BMG’s. Oh, well, have built quite a collection over the years. Will miss them.

Sound like you may have single-handedly brought on the demise of BMG. I don’t think they ever recovered from the multiple sign-ups you revealed here. Seriously, though, with the current generation not purchasing ‘tangible’ music (and even a lot of us baby boomers, too), it was only a matter of time before they stopped the club. If Tower Records and Virgin Megastore couldn’t survive, it does not bode well for the industry. The only stores that seem to be holding on around here are the specialty stores, and even some of them have closed.

d00dles | 3/25/2009, 5:25 pm EST

LAST CALL:

Current members should take advantage of the remaining promotions. I just spent over two hundred bucks on their “buy one, get five free” deal along with the last “music points” disc I was due and one 99 cent CD. I paid a total of $232.68 for 26 different titles (9 single discs, 12 double disc sets, 5 triple disc sets – 48 total discs). That works out to just $4.85 per disc. Of the total order, only one CD – Boz Scaggs “Fade Into Light” – is on backorder.

Their current promotion is “buy one, get four free,” and it’s still a good deal. For multiple disc sets, search for “Playlist Plus,” “Deluxe Edition,” “Anniversary Edition,” “Remastered,” “Expanded,” or “Gold.” Also check out $19.98 priced “DualDisc” titles and clearance titles at $.99 and $1.99. Lump similar priced titles together and you will make out well.

CKRider | 4/4/2009, 10:13 pm EST

Just ordered my 23 free CD’s and paid $2.79 each…Sorry to see you go BMG.

diana | 4/22/2009, 6:06 am EST

bmg needs to start the same promotion the music is great

FLOYD | 4/28/2009, 1:13 pm EST

I AM UPSET THT I HAVE RECEIVED 2 FREE CDS FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS AND NOW THEY ENDED THE PROGRAM. I AM ALSO UPSET THAT i ATTEMPTED TO USE THE COUPONS TO GET MY FREE CDS AND WAS REJECTED BECAUSE I CHOSE A NEWER CD WHICH HAD NEVER BEEN THE CASE. DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHO THE PRESIDENT SO I CAN COMPLAINT

Mike T. - Northern CA, USA | 4/28/2009, 4:51 pm EST

I’d been a customer of their Christian sub-club, “Sound-And-Spirit.com” since it opened in 1996. I started as a mail order customer, then naturally used their online service. I just recently found one last “3 free CD’s” voucher that I had earned quite some time ago, but had to mail in order to use it. I’m happy to say that (just in time) they received my voucher and confirmed my last shipment from them, via email.

Oh the memories of pouring over all of those catalogs.

Sound-And-Spirit… you will be missed.

Ripped off | 5/12/2009, 7:15 pm EST

I was one of the people who didn’t use BMG only to find that they had slapped a $92.00 charge onto my credit report this January of which was not mine. Maybe if they would have had customers sign contracts and credit check, they wouldn’t be scrambling for cash (by punishing people like me that never ordered) and shutting their doors on new, and their longtime loyal customers.

Chuck | 5/19/2009, 11:26 pm EST

I joined early in college. I would sign up all my friends and get free CD’s or tapes for doing so. My first order was actually for records, and I still have each of them. I also joined Sound-and-Spirit, and signed up online when they opened for business online. I really loved how they introduced the free shipping promotions. They finally took my suggestion. I doubt if I’ll join the party at the new club.

So, so long BMG!

Sylvia | 5/21/2009, 6:48 pm EST

BMG u will be missed dearly. I am one of your “original” first opened subscribers. I own about 600 cds (which are all from U) Don’t know if i want to join the “new” club. will miss u old friend!! :(

DJ Mac | 5/26/2009, 11:56 pm EST

I’ve been a member since I was 14. I’m 32 now and I will have to go to my local mom & pops used CD store to pick up CDs I don’t have. BMG to me was like a hobby. I will not close my BMG CD closet. I will continue buy BMG CDs whereever they are. BMG 4 LIFE!

Diana | 5/27/2009, 9:02 pm EST

Oh my God. BMG, NOOO :( I hate to admit that I also took advantage of the multiple sign-ups and got quite a hefty amount of CDs thanks to that. Now I feel guilty.

This really seems like it’s going to be the end of the “12 for One” CDs era since nobody really purchases actual CDs anymore. It makes me sad.

Fraud Alert | 5/28/2009, 12:20 am EST

I have never had an account with BMG, however, my credit report reflects otherwise. That’s why they have no number to call. And even if I did have an account, why wasn’t a bill or notice mailed to me?

Dave | 5/28/2009, 11:44 pm EST

I joined BMG back in 2007. I though did not scam them. I watched the sales and would buy when the price per CD was under $6 shipped. Normally 10-20 CD every month or two. I have enjoyed the service and have been able to build up a very large jazz collection. In particular the RVG collection. I will miss them and they were a lot cheaper than Amazon.com

Andrew | 5/31/2009, 8:53 pm EST

I came into BMG when they bought the International Preview Society, which deal in LPs, many years ago. I have bought a large percentage of my classical collection through them. I’m greatly saddened by this news as it marks a passing of an institution that was very useful and important. BMG will be missed.

EZLN | 6/2/2009, 4:42 pm EST

I will miss them.

I’m sorry to say that I was probably one of their worst customers. Multiple accounts, signing up under different names and getting free cds, etc.

Also aquired many box sets – up until a few years ago you could order box sets as part of the 12 for 1 deal.

gimeldaleth | 6/3/2009, 12:42 pm EST

it allowed me to build my cd collection. I had an entire family which did not exist getting free cd s I even had a pet getting discs.

restriction | 6/3/2009, 7:25 pm EST

I you believe BMG is a fraud then call them at (317) 692-9200. This number is and was valid as of September 2008. If the number will not go thru now I am sorry. I have had to use it while I was over in Iraq tryin to find the Talibans.

Larry | 6/4/2009, 6:37 pm EST

I joined way back in 1998. I was
on a tight budget, so I signed up
more than 100 friends over several years. Including a “2 free for life” promotion and bonus points, I got over 500 free CDs (plus shipping). I’ll miss BMG!

Joe Smith | 6/7/2009, 11:37 pm EST

Sad to see them go. Been a member since ‘92. I only ordered twice a year with their $1.99 sales, but I’d order 50 at a time. Damn, now I’ll have to buy elsewhere…

ratscabies | 6/8/2009, 12:10 pm EST

I signed up many times since high school, BMG, Columbia House, RCA…. I was terrible at sending back the cards, then the unwanted selections would come, I never get around to sending them back, never paid for them, got kicked out…then did it again a few years later. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I once got a call from a credit card bill collector the day my mother died. He was berating me because my check for my last payment had bounced. I told him I was making funeral arrangements and he said, “Listen, deadbeat, You need to send this money in!”

I told him, “Dude, for calling me a deadbeat while I am preparing to bury my mother, you just went to the bottom of the bill pay list. I will pay you after I pay Columbia House!”

My last BMG membership is still current, and, well, now that I’m an adult, I haven’t been a bad customer. I’ll actually miss them. I just redeemed my last 8 free CDs.

Maxine Beadle | 6/10/2009, 3:47 pm EST

I never had an account with bmg music yet my credit report stated that I have an overdue account with them. Is there a phone numbre?

sol | 6/11/2009, 6:11 pm EST

I once got a threatening email from them for ordering multiple copies of the same title (alleging I was reselling).

So, I wrote back that it was no different than someone who shops for friends/family members with the SAME/one subscription/customer card of those buying clubs (BJs, Costco). How many times do you shop for others using your card, hmmm?

After that argument, they stopped harassing me and never again questioned why I was ordering 6 copies at Xmas time of the same boxed set! Gonna miss them suckas.

Since1993 | 6/11/2009, 6:18 pm EST

Maybe it was the nuns beating the sense of right into me, but I only had one membership to BMG and it was a glorious one. CD’s have been my heroin since I was a kid. Every dollar I have ever made baby-sitting, washing cars and, eventually, as a corporate drone has been applied to my addiction.

Last night, I put in my last order of about 20 CD’s. It was a sad moment for me.

If I had to guess, I would say that about 600 of my 800+ CD’s came from BMG over the last 16 years. My favorites have been the Sound Samplers they did in the late 90’s. They grace the shelves in my room as well as my MP3 player.

I’ll light a candle for BMG on 6/30. They gave me a lot over the years, but what I will miss most is the connection to artists: old favorites and new.

Chase | 6/12/2009, 1:12 pm EST

I learned to swindle corporate America via BMG and Columbia House…I only used it for a few months using names like Paneuter Hinkle and Yohan Gutierrez…memories…

Maisymae | 6/17/2009, 7:50 pm EST

WOW and SAD. How many accounts have I had? Look at my CD collection. I’ve got crap I haven’t even open or listen to. I still have 2 accounts active as of today; June 17, 2009. They extended to June 23, 2009 to still buy.

I’m sad and forced to find another way to buy music w/o stepping inside a store. No, I’m not signing up w/sister company, didn’t like the agreement, SUCKS really. Switch to Amazon.com for the main reason, buy single songs instead of the whole album; especially if most of the songs suck. However, I still can get a great deal on the whole album and get the art/cover details downloaded too. Got color printer? YUP!

Mr. Music | 6/18/2009, 5:20 pm EST

Well I find it sad. I’ve been a member of Col House and BMG since 1986 off and on. I did what everyone else did, join, get the one, get free ones and quit. It averaged out to about $4 or $5 a piece including shipping.

This $6.99 a cd isn’t worth it. If there selections were any good it might be worth it but they have no selections anymore. I’ll go to Tower records and buy em with free shipping, anything I want.. they are the cheapest of all site that I’ve seen or basically for the cds I’m looking for.

It’s sad though, I have 2,000 plus cds. I used BMG the past 2 christmas’s to buy cds for friends and family. And I’m sorry but 1 free cd for joining.. that’s nothing. I saw something about a monthly fee being waved for ex-BMG customers. If they charge a monthly fee, they are writing their own death sentence.

PS – If I had to compare BMG (Old RCA) to Col House it’s a no brainer. Col House rocked! They were more expensive but the customer service was excellent, speed of delivery fast and selection out of this world. That’s who I really missed in the music club wars.

Terry | 6/26/2009, 12:56 pm EST

BMG MUSIC — I am very upset right now. I was notified by mail that the service would end. So I sent in my free CD cards (total 33 free CDs) before the end of May. I was on vacation for almost 2 weeks in June. I get home and very late on June 22 I have an e-mail that says they never received my mail. (Yeah, right) So since the last day had been changed to June 23, I quickly faxed the info on June 23 and was assured by a customer service representative that even though it would take several days to post my fax to my account, everything would be find. I call on June 26 to be sure my order was posted to my account and was told no order is on file and they can’t say if the fax was received or not. Also the rep would not let me talk to a supervisor. I tried unsucessfully to find e-mail contact info for the president, Stuart Goldfarb. I called my local newspaper consumer watch reporter and he will be looking into this for me. I feel BMG just does not want to give me 33 free CDs. I am angry because I know I am being ripped off. If anyone out there can help I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

Lisa | 7/4/2009, 10:05 pm EST

Damn! I was looking to join up again cause I was getting into country music and wanted to buy some CD’s for cheap.

Dano | 7/5/2009, 10:59 am EST

Maxine Beadle, Fraud Alert, Ripped-off, and now me. My credit score is affected because of BMG (a company I never bought from). I looked on here for a number, or contact info and found they are now closing. How can I get intouch with someone to help me fix this problem?

mike nixon | 7/6/2009, 6:30 pm EST

no way ! I’ve been with BMG off and on for years, Infact I just loged on and could’nt bring up their web page, I knew something was up. TOO BAD, BUMMER, BUMB TRIP ! Sorry to seee them go.
GOOD LUCK BMG WHERE EVER YOU ARE…

brad | 7/9/2009, 3:00 am EST

Well I am pissed. They didn’t send me an email until June 20th that they were closing. Then when I try to access the site, it is down. I had gotten my three free CDs and paid for the one and I still had 8 free CDs. I ended up not being able to get my fuckin albums cause the site was down for the last three days they were in service. goddammit.

Madison Joe | 7/9/2009, 10:09 am EST

RE: Terry, the exact same thing happened to me. I had a bunch of 2 Free for Life cards that had been piling up (because BMG Music Service never carried any of the classic rock albums I wanted), but in early May, I along with my family managed to find enough selections to use them up. I sent them, along with a few Dividend Certificates that had also been piling up, and a 1-page letter listing everything, to BMG on the 12th of May. Since the cards had said to wait 4-6 weeks, I assumed I wouldn’t see them until late June. When late June came and went with still no albums, I e-mailed them. Responses from Bonnie Chiffer, Diana Rogers, and other unnamed “Customer Service” drones have been the same boilerplate: “As you know, BMG Music Service was discontinued on June 30, 2009. Orders were accepted until June 23, 2009. Any order received or on hold after that date was not processed.”

I think a class-action suit brought against BMG’s “successor,” yourmusic.com, for egregious breach of contract is in order at this point.

BMG Buyer | 7/9/2009, 4:26 pm EST

I cannot believe it….. Now when the music sales would have hit the roof, U decide to close shop…. What a bummer, I would really rethink your decision…..

I am steaming over BMG not honoring their loyal customers the CD’s we have earned by buying the overpriced monthly selections. I had more than 30 saved up to pick out with my son for graduation this year ~ and now it seems they are history. It seems if I owed them money they would be trying to collect; why shouldn’t we try and collect what they owe us?? I was only notified by email; though I have not had internet since I was laid off and we cut back household bills. I was never notified any other way, though they found me when they wanted to sell me a monthly selection. I ALWAYS paid by mail, so why not notify me by that method?? Cheap, sad and extremely poor taste to leave in one’s mouth. Good deal in the beginning or not ~ I paid over $20 for each selection of the month just to not have to return it to them, and for the music points I would earn for a rainy day. Somebody should raise a stink about this!!

Biggoober | 7/11/2009, 6:34 am EST

BMG sucks, class action is the way to go. 50 free CD’s gone I’m pissed. they have not heard the last of me!!!!! OUT!!!!

CJluver | 7/12/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Biggoober, where do you think we should start? I have several phone numbers and one supervisors name. I think “yourmusic” is only a new company to cover up the losses at BMG and move on…not our fault that they are closing down/mismanaging. If “Sears” were to go belly up, they would have to honor any credit that was in the hands of their customers wouldn’t they?? Let’s not just take this lying down; we earned those CD’s and paid our bills ~ or you can be damn skippy BMG would be on our butts for the money if we hadn’t.

bibliowurm | 7/14/2009, 12:02 pm EST

I’ve been a member of BMG music club since 1981. I’ve always believed in purchasing albums/cd’s rather than paying for music on a per song basis. Never did care for 45’s either. Even though I’ve been a BMG member for a long time I can’t remember the last cd I actually purchased from them. I have been receiving 3 free CD’s per year from them for quite a few years but haven’t even bothered to redeed the coupons for the last few years. Probably have a dozen or so free ones still due me. Just seems as if most of the new stuff that’s out there was not my cup of tea. Would suggest you try eBay for used LP’s and CD’s of 60’s and 70’s music. I guess I’m just too nostalgic at heart!

your mom | 7/14/2009, 6:41 pm EST

i was upset so i need a cd.

bmgsucks | 7/15/2009, 3:47 pm EST

if anyone does end up putting together a class action (decent lawyers that can find loopholes do well with these) lawsuit, please put the posting up that you are doing so. The way BMGMusic.com shutdown is ridiculous. They shut a lot of people out of things they were deserved by not giving more notice to cash in on free CDs they were owed. I was one of them. Bad business.

ed s | 7/15/2009, 10:39 pm EST

I am not surprised that BMG has ended. Their customer service was pathetic. Sometimes I called BMG customer. Forget about getting through. At times I e mailed. I got six different answers to the same question from 4 different people. (That is not a typo. The cust ser agents seemed to respond without even answering the question.

The good news is that BMG did provide some deals for a while. I never signed up for 25 accounts at once, but I would resign as soon as I finished my committment.

Well, I cannot mourn BMG music club. They were pitiful.

keith r. | 7/17/2009, 5:23 am EST

r u kidding me!!(250 cd’s).I was with them 4 many years, and had a hard time finding anything(in my music era)that I didn’t have. never even came close to 250 cd’s!

keith r. | 7/17/2009, 5:28 am EST

Just to add.If they were in business that long they must have been making money.

Robin A Reed | 7/17/2009, 7:38 am EST

I WM VERY ANGRY WITH BMG BECAUSE I STILL HAD 23 FREE CDS TO GET NOW I WILL NOT BE GETTING ANY. I SPENT QUITE A BIT OF MONEY WITH THIS COMPANY. I REALLY THINK WE SHOULD GET OUR FREE CDS, A CLASS ACTION SUIT WITH THIS COMPANY WOULD BE APPROPIATE.

CJluver | 7/18/2009, 9:12 am EST

I have written several times to BMG about how pissed I am…they stopped writing back when I mentioned, “BREACH OF CONTRACT”! Something should be done, and I hope somebody out there has a smart lawyer friend. This seems to be the hottest blog for angry customers. We need to get together and voice our anger in their face.

CDBuyer | 7/19/2009, 11:00 pm EST

Check out cdbaby.com look into their 5$ section. you will find some great little known artist’s

BS | 7/20/2009, 1:12 am EST

Quit whining about suing and missing out on free CDs people. You should have redeemed your free CDs before they closed because you had ample time to do so. They notified customers by e-mail and through the mail also(if you still had a paper subscription) several months in advance! They would try and get you with that Featured Selection stuff, but if you stayed current with your account, they had good deals and were a worthwhile service for music lovers.

Jo | 7/20/2009, 5:42 pm EST

I liked BMG-got most of my 70’s rock from them, they had a great selection, has anyone noticed we are in a recession/depression…that’s probally why they went under or were bought out…Hello.

CJluver | 7/21/2009, 5:41 am EST

FYI BS, I did have a paper subscription ~ because I have no credit card, I always paid by mail. Whereas my CD’s came in the mail, not out of my computer, I would have expected a notice by mail. I have been laid off for months and not had any internet service, and BMG wasn’t in my contact list either. If I was going bankrupt, I would be expected to give the folks I owe money to a respectable notice. What upset people are saying here is that they were not notified properly. I am a single Mom, and I had been saving those CD’s on my account for my son who graduated this year. Now, being laid off and spending my money on gas for job-hunting, I have little to offer him. Tell me BS, if you had B-Day or Grad gifts on layaway at some large store, and they went belly up, would you expect to lose your stuff because you did not get proper notice? We paid our bills and EARNED these CD’s because we kept alot of the overpriced selections instead of costing them more money and sending them back. I suppose that the people that owe money to them should be exempt now because they are closed?? Think about it….HELLOOOO

Len | 7/22/2009, 10:52 am EST

I e-mailed BMG my 8 remaining anniversary selections on 6/15, and received confirmation that they had received it.

When I hadn’t received them by 7/5, I emailed them and they told me my order (and account) had been “purged” from their system and they could give me no explanation or help.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Also, I was a “2 free CDs for life” customer. BMG cannot escape its ongoing obligations simply by telling people they are going out of business. Those obligations are liabilities of the company. Assuming BMG had assets, any entity that purchased those assets also purchased the liabilities attached to those assets.

It seems that this company has acted in a purposefully fraudlent manner to cheat its former customers. Assuming they’ve done this on a widespread basis, it would seen a class action is in order.

Pssssd | 7/25/2009, 3:17 pm EST

I got scroood out of the 7 CDs they owed me. Never got an email they were going to shut down. They do not answer my emails except to say that BMG has closed its doors. One would think it illegal that they did not keep their end of the bargain.

Starless16 | 7/26/2009, 1:24 am EST

Well, kind of sad I’m gonna miss out on all those $4.99 CD’s. don’t like paying full price at Best Buy or Wal Mart. Guess I have enough CD’s for now. Still kinda’ sad. I’m not going to sign up for $6.99 every month from my credit card for CD’s I may not even get…no thanks. I’m hanging on to what little money I’ve got left.

The DJ | 7/30/2009, 9:10 am EST

I joined BMG for the firsttime back in 1997. I did the “add another name to the same address to get the deal.” I got so many CD’s through BMG in the first few months that I had a collection large enough to start DJing with CDs. I would have 3-4 alais at my dorm address, 3-4 at my dad’s house and then 3-4 at my mom’s house. As a member I would get 4 free CDs by adding another memeber which would be another alias. So I would in essence get 16 CDs for the price of 1 plus Shipping. Then cancel all the memberships and do it all again.

I hadn’t been a member since 2005. This morning I was trying to become a member again to add a new genre to my music collection with out paying full price at Wal-Mart and this is how I found out that the went out of business.

Bummer, so now what I thought would cost me maybe $60 for 32 CDs will now cost me about $400 if I’m lucky. I’m going to miss BMG and all my alias will to.

SmtmsAlwys | 8/17/2009, 3:25 pm EST

I, too, had free CDs coming to me as well as some certificates I’d never used. So did my mother who had an account with them. I never saw anything about this until I went to log on to pay the rest of what I owed – I was a bit behind – and it kept taking me to the “YourMusic” site.

Having no idea, I tried to sign in… after registering or reregistering, or whatever, I still had no answers. Finally I google’ed it only to find this article, which is the first I’d heard of it.

I’m not real happy about this and I do hope that someone gets serious about doing a class action.

notHAPPY | 8/23/2009, 2:35 am EST

I had more coming to me too, and just tonight went on to get them and GONE! that sucks big time, Class is needed here, just make sure they send real mail to our homes, I NEVER GOT THE E-MAIL!!!!
TTTHHHIIISSS RRREEEAAALLLLLLYYY
SSSUUUCCCK KKSSS, we need to start a web page about this, and get a lawyer, and with a web site everyone can sign up, and with a list of people, I know that some sh*t head lawyer will see GREEN and take the case. Call the web site “pissed-OFF-at-BMG.com” lets do it, anyone know how to set up a site like this???

Comrade Claus | 8/24/2009, 5:44 am EST

I had several CDs I was waiting for, but they said they “weren’t in stock”

I was expecting them to get the CDs IN STOCK someday, but no, they just shut down. In a months time, they could’ve honored their obligation & got the CDs for me after I ordered them!

ChristinaRose | 8/27/2009, 1:37 am EST

My CD collection was built up because of BMG… I actually just went on today after months of not using them, because I wanted to get some more CDs at half the price. There’s a new artist out and I want all her CDs… now I guess we’ll all have to be a little more reserved in our CD addiction.
So sad to see them go! Now I’ll have to tell my kids “I remember when…” stories about BMG.
Rock on!

Sad customer | 9/3/2009, 12:21 pm EST

I got alot of Gospel CD’s from this Company. I honestly realized what a blessing they were. You can go no where else to get the deals they gave so I think its really sad that peopl are complaining about not getting FREE CD’S when they got them the when tney signed up as well as multiple other times!! That is pathetic. They probably lost money giving so many popular free CD’s away……be grateful you got what you did and stop complaining and threatening to do a lawsuit. What will you say? “Judge I want to sew because they didn’t give me my free CD’s even though I’ve got over 50 from them so far for the price of 5!” Sigh …..People are so greedy its sad. Lets see someone try to go to any department store (e.g walmart, best buy etc) and get any deal more than buy 1 get 1 half off! (Shaking head)

PJ | 9/14/2009, 7:31 am EST

I too had free cd’s coming to me (12) which I was saving up for christmas presents. I am pxssxxd to find out I can’t get them. I agree it is Breach of Contract and I’m on board if anyone can find a lawyer to help us.

Pam | 9/17/2009, 3:16 pm EST

I too had several free CDs coming to me. I didn’t know they were gone until I googled them when I couldn’t sign on. What a terrible way to end a long run business.

CDs for under $3 gone forever | 9/27/2009, 3:03 am EST

BMG was the ultimate mail order CD Club! But they were too generous and had too many loop holes that permitted anyone who wanted a ton of CDs to open multiple accounts under alias names at the same address-I am guilty as charged! The policy of only 1 account per address was so easy to abuse. I just wrote them a nice letter explaining that as a good paying BMG member(which I was & I never screwed them by not paying for all the CDs I ordered like some people) anyway I just told them I wanted expand their membership base by referring all my buddies at the frat house where we all lived. So they honored my request and a landslide of CDs started showing up at my house. I would get 17 CDs for $40(which included the 1 CD at the regular price, all shipping charges & money order fees)I would do the 12 for 1 deal and of course if you referred a friend you got 5 more CDs. So I would always refer myself to myself. BMG trusted me because I always paid them promptly so subsequently they always approved of all of my many referrals. I had a friend who wanted a bunch of CDs. So I took her order and she would give me a great haircut and I would “pay” her with 3 CDs. During the 1990’s I was a faithful BMG member ordering so many CDs for myself & friends that I lost count. However, my average price for each new CD was only $2.36! I haven’t been a member for over 10 years but just today I wanted to start up again. Needless to say I was very very disappointed at the news of BMG going out of business. I guess even diehards like Tower Records can bite the dust at anytime. BMG will always be the best music deal that there ever was. But all good things must come to an end and unfortunately like $1/gal. gas we will never see a company with the offers BMG Music had ever again. SWD-San Jose, California

Wah! | 10/8/2009, 6:39 pm EST

Gimme, gimme, gimme!

Unfortunately, corporate America runs on fine print.

I’m positive that all of you that claim that you were screwed out of what you were entitled to have no legal recourse because you didn’t read the fine print.

I was a 2-Free-For-Life member as well. If you read the fine print of the offer, you are only entitled to the selections if BMG was still in business. To assume that you would really be able to receive two selections for the rest of your life is a bit ridiculous.

I’ve seen on here prove how greedy we’ve become.

WAH!

kenc49 | 10/13/2009, 6:04 pm EST

I had two paper routes in high school back in the 1960’s to feed my record buying habit – first mono LPs, then stereo Lps but they were a dollar extra and then reel-to-reel tapes. Loved the smell of those old reel tapes. Still have them and they still sound brand new. The Columbia club would send out an LP sampler every 3 months with selections from their classical catalog. Another good club was the Musical Heritage Society. Lots of baroque music. So much music, so little time.

JP | 10/13/2009, 9:47 pm EST

I signed up a few times under aliases and got lots of cds. Did it with Columbia House too, it was just too easy. You could join, fulfill commitment, quit, then sign up as an alias. I was about to do it again and read this article. WEAK.

Doug | 10/20/2009, 11:22 am EST

Oh, the many number of CD’S that I had from BMG is great. It is kind of sad they are no longer with us.

Kitten | 10/20/2009, 1:47 pm EST

this was a good place to get your cd’s

Jim | 10/23/2009, 6:50 pm EST

I was a member of Columbia and BMG for many years, even when they sold records. It was such a great deal and they even allowed returns or credits on unwanted ones. It saddens my heart to see both of them go. I joined a lot of friends too. I guess they made money on items people never sent back like I did. Happy Listening.
