Report: Beastie Boys, Jane’s Addiction, Depeche Mode, Kings of Leon Set for Lollapalooza

The Beastie Boys, Jane’s Addiction, Depeche Mode and Kings of Leon are among the bands that will reportedly headline this year’s Lollapalooza Festival, taking place August 7-9th at Chicago’s Grant Park. Multiple sources confirmed to the Chicago Tribune’s Turn It Up blog that Jane’s, Depeche and the Beasties would perform at the event, while Billboard added the Kings of Leon to the list. The entire lineup will be officially announced in April.

Reps for C3 Productions told Rock Daily last week that the rumored headliners were not confirmed just yet, but that’s not exactly a denial either. As per Lollapalooza tradition, two more marquee acts will likely join the four already announced. If the rumors are right, the festival has once again tapped into its late-’80s/early-’90s roots by signing three headliners that were all around when the festival first began in 1991.

The reunited Jane’s Addiction’s involvement in Lollapalooza seemed all but a guarantee, considering Perry Farrell’s role in establishing the festival and the band’s suspicious lack of Chicago dates when their joint tour with the Nine Inch Nails rolls into the Windy City. Similarly, in those Depeche Mode tour dates we revealed last week, there was a convenient week-long gap between stops in New York and Seattle in early August. And the Beasties have already been confirmed for Bonnaroo, so they’re evidently traveling the festival circuit.

Last year’s Lollapalooza featured Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Wilco, the Raconteurs and Kanye West. So how does this year compare so far? Leave your criticism — and suggestions for who should round out the lineup — in our comments.

Add the Verve to the lineup.

Dr. Patio | 3/9/2009, 3:25 pm EST

The NIN show was unbelievable last year. Radiohead was pretty awesome too. I think Bonnaroo has my heart this year with Phish, NIN, and the Beasties.

Although, It would be pretty awesome to see Depeche Mode…

Jonathan Smite | 3/9/2009, 3:55 pm EST

This sounds like a bunch of lollapaLOSERS.

Get a real lineup!!

Enchanting Wizard of Rhythm | 3/9/2009, 4:04 pm EST

I think TV on the Radio would be a great and worthy successor to Radiohead.

Time Tenay | 3/9/2009, 4:07 pm EST

The only thing that will save this lineup is TOOL.

Why is it that Europe can line up amazing festival after amazing festival and we get crap in the U.S.? The Beastie Boys are like 50 years old and can’t remember their lyrics.

The Rock and Roll Pediatrician | 3/9/2009, 4:09 pm EST

Can’t wait to see Jane’s Addiction and Kings of Leon! Other potentials I would love to see on the list are:
The newly-reformed Wolfmother
The Black Keys (Missed them last year)
The Black Angels
The Warlocks
Liam Finn
Alice in Chains
Relentless 7
Chris Cornell (despite his latest record)
Queens of the Stone Age
Scott Weiland Solo
Sublime (New lead singer)

I wonder if anyone on that list will make it out! Can’t wait!!

nagboy92 | 3/9/2009, 4:10 pm EST

I think they should put Lollapalooza back on the road again. I’d like to see a lineup like This: Pearl Jam, NIN, Jane’s Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins,Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, reformed Alice in Chains, etc. Enough of this 2-3 day Chicago BS.

nagboy92 | 3/9/2009, 4:13 pm EST

forgot to Add, STP, Chris Cornell, like the other guy said Tool, maybe Rage against the Machine.

Tom Ross | 3/9/2009, 4:14 pm EST

The lineup should be U2, Metallica, Green Day, AC/DC, System of a Down, Slipknot, Jay-Z, Taproot, Coldplay, Eminem, Tool, Limp Bizkit, Phish, and the re-united Creed and then maybe I’d go.

wompus maximus | 3/9/2009, 4:16 pm EST

tool is terrible

nagboy92 | 3/9/2009, 4:18 pm EST

A Great Lineup would be Pearl Jam, STP, reformed Alice in Chains, Rage Against the Machine, Chris Cornell, Kings of Leon, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, Toll etc. also I think Lollapalooza should return to being a touring festival. Driving to Chicago is ridiculous. Let’s hope Lollapalooza tours again soon. hopfully coming to Minnesota.

Caution: | 3/9/2009, 4:32 pm EST

Depeche Mode…worth ticket alone.

Anonymous | 3/9/2009, 4:47 pm EST

Some of you have just awful taste in music.

Lolla08 | 3/9/2009, 5:43 pm EST

Nothing beats last year.

nothing.

barrymode | 3/9/2009, 6:26 pm EST

Depeche Mode in itself makes it better than last year!

The Rock and Roll Pediatrician | 3/9/2009, 6:28 pm EST

It’s all about Chicago, also forget the new-metal and arena rock bands lolla is about more talented groups than that.

For those of you who don’t know kings of leon, listen to them (Aha Shake Heartbreak is my fav album by them) one of the most talented and legitimate rock bands out there right now. I’d go to lolla to see them alone.

claudia | 3/9/2009, 6:30 pm EST

we shoudl remane the lollapalooza to Tour of the Universe in Chicago!

gregg | 3/9/2009, 6:32 pm EST

I can’t wait to see Depeche!!!!

Scotty J | 3/9/2009, 6:41 pm EST

CYPRESS HILL!!

Anonymous | 3/9/2009, 8:15 pm EST

Wow, that’s doesn’t even come close to last year so far . . .

The Rock and Roll Pediatrician | 3/9/2009, 8:16 pm EST

Haha Cypress Hill would be classic!

Peter Frampton!
Smashing Pumpkins!

mat | 3/9/2009, 8:52 pm EST

Faith No More

Chris | 3/9/2009, 9:25 pm EST

Kings of Leon make the festival worth it. Best band of the festival.

Dude Man | 3/9/2009, 9:45 pm EST

Here’s a few acts that I think belong:
Metallica
Kid Rock
AC/DC
Foo Fighters
The Black Crowes
Staind
Papa Roach
Faith No More

Dude Man | 3/9/2009, 10:12 pm EST

And also:
Anvil
The White Stripes
Guns and Roses

psycho | 3/9/2009, 10:33 pm EST

Kings of Leon suck!!! One hit wonder waiting to happen

chi | 3/9/2009, 11:28 pm EST

did someone down there mention Creed?

just don’t even go if you’re serious

LOLLA LOVE | 3/9/2009, 11:45 pm EST

DUDE MAN, that is a terrible list. PLease get serious.

Kings of Leon are one of the most amazing, most humble band I have ever seen live. They were so thankful to grace the stage in 2006. And Eddie Vedder joining them with tambourines was quite a sight!

Hell yes Lolla 2009. Thank goodness I only live 1 hour away.

Anonymous | 3/10/2009, 4:08 am EST

Nice to see Kings of Leon headlining, terrific live band. It’s sad to see them sell-out to an extent but they are finally getting the respect in the US that they deserve.

Realistic hopes for other bands:
TV on the Radio
Animal Collective
The Roots
Fleet Foxes
Dr. Dog
The Whigs
Delta Spirit
Deerhunter

Tweeter | 3/10/2009, 5:25 am EST

I’m sorry to say because the truth hurts, but the majority of the people that have written suggestions have unbelievably horrible taste in music. Just horrible.
Scott Weiland, STP, Chris Cornell, Metallica, Foo Fighters, System Of A Down, Slipknot, Taproot, Limp Bizkit(are you kidding me?), Creed(What?),Kid Rock, Staind, Papa Roach.
People who like those bands should be burned at the stake for lack of intelligence and for having bad taste. The musicians in those bands should all be burned too, but on TV.

Dude Man | 3/10/2009, 7:15 am EST

LOALLA LOVE really now Kings of Leon amazing? They put out one of the stupidest songs last year(a.k.a. Sex on Fire). A kid in middle school could have wrote that.

Pslightly Psycho | 3/10/2009, 8:12 am EST

While this year’s headliners don’t come close to 2008’s, I will still go. The side stages will most likely feature some hot new acts, and I am hoping the other two “arena-sized” acts to be announced are decent. Papa Roach though? C’mon folks. Wise up.

the dude | 3/10/2009, 8:39 am EST

For one lala should not be a tour again, its got a nice home in chi city. I would like to see tv on the radio, yeah yeah yeahs, some handsome furs would be nice, who ever said creed and papa roach is retarded.

timetruthhearts | 3/10/2009, 8:43 am EST

it would be SWEET if the white stripes could come and play for us!!!! my favorite would be jack & meg, the chili peppers, the shins, kings of leon, u2, the killers!

John | 3/10/2009, 9:14 am EST

The Flaming Lips would be great with a new album out and the Smashing Pumpkins would be a nice Chicago connection.

Wait | 3/10/2009, 9:27 am EST

How can anyone talk shit on the Foo Fighters? Just because they sell more albums than your indie band doesn’t mean they don’t rock. They put on one of, if not THE BEST live shows of anyone, and I have seen everyone. They killed at ACL last year

Wish list line up /09 | 3/10/2009, 9:39 am EST

REO SPEEDWAGON…and then whomever else REO SPEEDWAGON approves for us to enjoy.

ALL HAIL THE DARK OVERLORD…REO SPEEDWAGON!!!

Anonymous | 3/10/2009, 1:05 pm EST

Wilco also has a suspicious gap in their touring schedule around the Lolla dates. Think they would play two years in a row? Normally, I wouldn’t, but hey, they are Chicago boys. I hope so. That would seal the deal for me.

Anonymous | 3/10/2009, 2:50 pm EST

Whoever down there said Kings of Leon were a one hit wonder should really do their music research! They’ve been around awhile and if you don’t have Aha Shake Heartbreak then you are missing out. Other bands I’d like to see:
TV on the Radio
Manchester Orchestra
The Whigs (I saw them open for KOL and they’re great)

...PEOPLE AREN'T CIVILIZED YET | 3/10/2009, 5:17 pm EST

Just because someone has different taste in music than you doesn’t mean you have the right to bash them for it.
I’d love to see the following:
Slipknot
Foo Fighters
Avenged Sevenfold
Buckcherry
Bullet For My Valentine
Offspring
Nine Inch Nails
Maybe Kings Of Leon
Rock at it’s finest…sort of.

Caution: | 3/10/2009, 6:21 pm EST

That is a great line up. DM and JA are two of my favorite bands and are both amazing live. I have followed Kings of Leon for severla years. They had to come to the Uk to make their name as they know that the average US punter is either Kid Rock or Britney.

DM | 3/10/2009, 9:25 pm EST

Love Depeche Mode. Their new album and tour is gonna rock!!

violator | 3/12/2009, 4:22 pm EST

Some of you are truly pathetic.
I think you’re confused this isnt Ozzfest!!! Oh really Lollapaloser?
Depeche Mode is outstanding live first off. Others that should be there but are a long shot
Portishead
Bjork
Thiev ery Corporation
Lauryn Hill
Hot Chip
Santogold
Common
Eryka h Badu
Outkast

trinity | 3/12/2009, 5:27 pm EST

Any non-Depeche fans will become Mode fans once they see them live at palooza. They’re a great live band and will surprise some pople who have a distorted view on this band based on the perception that they are an 80s band. They are far from it!! They’re one of the bands that got started in the 80s and have still been able to make great albums throughout the last 20-30 years!! great band!!

Callum Hamilton | 3/13/2009, 9:47 am EST

I would travel to chicago just 2 see depeche mode i live in london and im goin 2 the tour of the universe in the 02 in may WA HOO for people who havent seen dm live where have you been for the last 30 years ….btw kings of leon suck

Unknown | 3/14/2009, 4:08 pm EST

You Depeche fans are obsessed and loyal in a scary fuckin way!!!

Anonymous | 3/17/2009, 5:38 pm EST

Not one person said Pearl Jam… i know they play the festival often but they are one of the best festival bands out there

jeff | 3/18/2009, 7:49 pm EST

DEPECHE rule live!! But they aren’t coming to Vancouver on this tour which sucks. If Daft Punk were also playing Lolla this year, I would fly to Chicago.
BTW I wish Lolla would tour again. I went to ‘93, 94, 95, and maybe ‘96 (cant remember) in Vancouver and they were some of the best shows I’ve seen.
I agree with the guy that said Lollapalooza is NOT Ozzfest! Guns N Roses??? Are you kiddinge?
Off the top of my head here are some that I think work perfectly for it:
The Prodigy
Cypress Hill
Depeche Mode
Daft Punk
Breeders
Underworld
Tears For Fears
Primus
Björk
Orbital
and …
Porno For Pyros!

jeff | 3/18/2009, 7:58 pm EST

Whoops i forgot to add:
KMFDM

BB | 4/2/2009, 2:47 pm EST

I feel that a lineup that has less people with a cult following like last year will decrease the huge crowds and make it safer and more comfortable for people.

AussieMega | 4/6/2009, 6:42 pm EST

Love that Depeche Mode is going to play…This is the first time they’ve done a festival, should be interesting.
Other acts that would be great to see in the mix:

The Killers
White Lies
The Rifles

(if you haven’t heard of those last two bands, please go check them out…They are relatively new, and they are awesome. I haven’t been this excited about music in a long time!)
