N.W.A Biopic in the Works, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre To Produce

Rap supergroup N.W.A will become the latest hip-hop act to have its story told in a big-screen biopic. Straight Outta Compton will chart the group’s rise and fall, EW’s Entertainment Insider reports. The film has already recruited N.W.A’s Ice Cube and Dr. Dre as producers, as well as Tomica Wright, the widow of Eazy-E. Perhaps the act responsible for putting West Coast rap on the map, the quartet — which also included rapper MC Ren — was controversial for both its name, Niggaz With Attitude, and its hit “Fuck Tha Police.”

The self-proclaimed “World’s Most Dangerous Group” and Rolling Stone’s Number 83 on our list of Immortals released three albums, most notably 1988’s Straight Outta Compton. Ice Cube left the group over a royalty fight in 1989, and the outfit ultimately broke up for good in 1991. Ice Cube and N.W.A were involved in a rap feud around the time of Cube’s solo Amerikkk’s Most Wanted, then Dre and Eazy-E famously feuded, as evidenced by The Chronic hit “Dre Day.” In their heyday, the group also faced off against family groups that criticized their lyrical content. There’s so much more, but we don’t want to ruin the movie for you.

Following the release of the B.I.G. film Notorious, hip-hop biopics have suddenly become a hot commodity in Hollywood. The trend started with Eminem’s 8 Mile and 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Trying, and since then a film is being scripted about Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Run-DMC, a planned Tupac Shakur film is being held up due to legal problems and now we have this N.W.A film in the works. No director has been announced for the N.W.A project yet, but producers are reportedly seeking a helmer on par with 8 Mile’s Curtis Hanson.

If Hollywood is going this direction, then they need to make movies about real rappers who represent real hiphop, not sellouts like big and pac.
You want a movie about real rappers, then make a movie about Messy Marv or Shorty shitstains.

Shorty Shitstain? Really? What would it be called? “The Stain that Started it All.” That has a nice ring to it.

ogloco | 3/11/2009, 5:05 pm EST

CB4 was a great biopic for NWA LOL!!!!, no but they do deserve this and let people know who took “gansta” rap to the next level….RIP Eazy-E

artificialred | 3/11/2009, 5:13 pm EST

who the hell is shorty shitstains??? NWA deserves to have their story told. They started all this shit. The reason they are making movies about these people is because they are relevant and they made this genre of music what it is today. Even though these days, all rap is regurgitated bullshit, 100%!!! Every “artist” sounds the same, all the songs sound the same, there is no originality to it anymore!!!

That dude Kang is off the hook, Shorty Shitstain was on one good track on the ODB album. NWA created gangsta rap, recognize. if anything NWA deserves a biopic more then big or pac. I could see where you’re coming from if you dropped legit names like Rakim or KRS-One. Plus NWA didn’t sell out A$$hole, if you were in the game before Sean Combs glamorized it you never had a chance to sell out. Eazy-E is the epitome of Gangsta Rap.

anthony | 6/26/2009, 9:20 pm EST

what took them so so long. N.W.A are the fathers to Gangsta rap. When you talk about how we got lil wayne, rick ross, an t.i now without n.w.a we would’nt have them

anthony | 6/26/2009, 9:44 pm EST

all of them had different elements like this

Eazy-E was the one who was the leader an was the signature voice throughout all the music.

Dr Dre was the one who was the producer who found all the sound and put it on wax And understood his role an became a good rapper in his own right. if yu don’t believe me listen to the chronic album. and by the way dre hurry up with Detox

Ice Cube was the rebel who was the hardocore political street life rapper. and he is still one of the dopest rappers today. He also wrote some of Eazy-E lyrics for straight outta compton and eazy-Duz-It.

MC Ren he had the dopest flow out of the entire group. An in my opinion he was their second best Emcee behind Cube. and i here he got a new album comin out an imma go get it.

Dj Yella was the Dj and the producer he could play live instruments. So i want you to know this he might not have talked on any of the albums but he was a key part in making the music with dre.

the D.O.C is my favorite rapper of all time even though he could only release one album before his accident caused him to lose his voice permantely. He was one of the ghostwriters for N.W,A From the beginning so you gotta give him credit. So when his time came for his album. It as appropriately titled no one can do it better.

Well im only 15 an im from columbus so some of ya’ll is like what do i know. well i will tell i listen to this like i listen to lil wayne or young jeezy today an my goal is to start my own record label. so look for me my name is anthony love from columbus ohio
