Phish Rip Through Fan Favorites at First Hampton Reunion Show

There was nothing outlandish about Phish’s show last night at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia — except for the fact that it was the jam-band kings’ first show in almost five years. Over a massive, four-hour set, guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman and keyboardist Page McConnell ripped through dozens of crowd-favorites like “Harry Hood,” “You Enjoy Myself,” and “David Bowie” to a psyched, totally-sold-out audience of 13,000 fans. (Read a report from night two and grab photos of Phish’s Hampton run.)

Over their storied three-decade career, Phish have become known for performing some one-of-a-kind shows filled with surprise covers and transcendent improvisation. (You can witness this on their new, seven-disc box set Live at the Roxy, from a 1993 Atlanta show). But for the newly-reunited Phish, last night was all about getting reacquainted with their catalog — and with the audience. It was like hanging out with friends you haven’t seen in years: things are awkward at first, but after a few minutes, it’s just like old times. (Check out photos of the Vermont jam legends’ long career.)

When the band hit the stage at close to 8 pm, they kicked things off with some of their most compositionally complex tunes, from the knotted prog-funk of “Fluffhead” to “Divided Sky,” where the group’s quiet, mellifluous interplay of guitar, drums, bass and keys suggests they’re as well-oiled of a machine as they’ve ever been. Only about 50 minutes into the set did the guys really seem to relax. Before launching into the ominous groove of “Stash,” Gordon took a moment to adjust his onstage fan while McConnell stepped up from the keys to stretch out.

From there, the show became a total party with highlights including gut-punching jams like “Possum,” the Stevie Wonder-esque funk on “Tweezer” and “Harry Hood,” during which lighting designer Chris Kuroda turned the room into a giant disco. (One intrepid fan snuck in an inflatable alien, which danced in the air as fans tossed it around the floor.)

Of course, it would not be a Phish show without some hi-jinks from the band. “You Enjoy Myself,” which the group aborted and started again after flubbing its complex arrangement, closed with a seriously spooky a cappella jam. And when Phish launched into “Bouncing Around the Room” during their encore, the crew let loose a bunch of giant, inflatable balloons, one of which exploded on McConnell’s piano rig.

After the show, fans spilled out into the lots and what would have normally turned into a raucous outdoor party was quietly shut down by police. But who could argue? Nothing topped the excellent, four-hour bash Phish had just delivered inside.

The show | 3/7/2009, 3:46 pm EST

This was like mid 90s Phish….just perfect. This may have been their best show since the last Hampton shows in 2000. Seriously trancendant and perfect.

Bill | 3/7/2009, 4:18 pm EST

This was the first Fluffhead since 9/28/2000 since it’s quite complicated and Trey couldn’t exHactly pull it off in between then and now. Great show. 2 hour first set. They’re back.

Mr. Obvious | 3/7/2009, 7:22 pm EST

And it was the first Grind since ‘98…

lexie | 3/8/2009, 12:14 am EST

yay, david bowie. you be forty.

A Phan | 3/8/2009, 1:08 pm EST

The “flub” at the beginning of You Enjoy Myself was intentional, it was a reference to the last time the band played YEM in Hampton (back in 2003) and they started in the wrong key.

headband | 3/8/2009, 1:34 pm EST

phish suck, best days way past them, good nostalga act though

They are back | 3/8/2009, 1:40 pm EST

Did anyone know they left? Did anyone care? Do we now have to see and smell dirty hippies with nothing better to do than cream about Phish, next time someone thinks about going to a phish show, don’t, take a shower instead.

Larry Bird | 3/8/2009, 2:49 pm EST

Perhaps they didn’t break new ground as a band the last two night, but it was certainly a return to form. The fact that they’ve been seriously practicing lately was apparent. As songwriters their best days might be behind them, but as musicians and entertainers they’re still the best out there.

Ryan | 3/8/2009, 6:55 pm EST

phish is back, haters can die

casey | 3/9/2009, 12:12 am EST

Probably the best three nights of rock and roll music i have ever witnessed. PHISH HAMPTON 2009

Harpua | 3/9/2009, 12:46 am EST

To those who say that “Phish suck” and negative comments as such…right on, that’s your opinion. But give me ONE band out there right now who is more talented than Phish and can even come CLOSE to playing the sophisticated tunes they write. I think you might want to re-evaluate what you consider to be good music. These guys are epic. More talent in this one band than the WHOLE top 40 crap that RS usually raves about. These guys can’t even be touched. SEE YOU THIS SUMMER. Haters…please stay home and turn the bad feedback into something positive. Waste.

Guyute | 3/9/2009, 10:10 am EST

Never made the show, like 99.9% of the die hard fans, but appreciated the free downloads from Live Phish. WOW is all i have to say. I was at Coventry when the band seemed to become unravelled. It was sad and i always knew one day the band would get their act together, work out the bugs (mental and physical) and blow our heads off once more. Well they certainly did this weekend. To the haters – the new Jonas Bros. album is rumored to be really hot. Maybe check them out. To Phish – THANKS!

Parker | 3/9/2009, 10:41 am EST

This is to Harpua.

I love PHISH, but nothing touches My Morning Jacket right now.

See ya’ll in Tennessee.

cleveland steamer | 3/9/2009, 11:19 am EST

sober trey = tight phish

Larry | 3/9/2009, 11:23 am EST

To Harpua, 2 words- Pearl Jam.

hoodoovoodoo | 3/9/2009, 11:37 am EST

My Morning Jacket is probably the most hyped-up let down I can think of at the moment. I keep trying to like them, but they really don’t do anything for me. I’ve seen them a number of times and they can’t even come close to Phish. Whoever thinks they are better must have have taken some great drugs. I have yet to see Pearl Jam but I highly doubt that they have the face-melting abilities that Phish has.

Ryan, you TOOL | 3/9/2009, 11:51 am EST

Here’s a difference between Dead heads and Phish fans……No head would ever post…the Dead is back, haters can die. The band is good, there is no doubt, but the scene will never be what the Dead scene was…..it’s filled with posers!!!

Icculus84 | 3/9/2009, 1:26 pm EST

Haha oh man, I love how some people come here to say Phish is bad and like Pearl Jam is better. Musically, both in jams and written notes, even God would laugh at that statement. Pearl Jam, wow. And no, you don’t need drugs people, I was 100% sober at the Hampton show and it blew my mind. And for those who were on drugs, who cares. Live life. Do what you want. Phish is amazingly talented and they are back with the energy that pushed them years ago…

Phish is back. Deal with it. It was tight, the jams were great, Fishman played a vacuum, Trey and Cactus bounced on trampolines haha… Phish is back.

(Too bad they are playing at CRAPPY Bonnaroo though. Roo used to be good in 2002, but now its just a loser frat party with a few talented acts between. In my humble opinion.)

Greg | 3/9/2009, 2:06 pm EST

They’re a good band and I’m gald they’re playing again.

Drip | 3/9/2009, 2:40 pm EST

Hey guys…Have seen Pearl Jam before and also saw Phish. Gotta say, I love Pearl Jam, those guys are great. But as far as creative juices, man, Phish squeezed the fruit of knowledge. Seriously…I have seen thousands of concerts and they are way up there as far as best acts…Seriously, the few times I have seen them was way more impressive than the PJ shows. Not to say PJ sucks, they are fantastic, but live, few can touch Phish…

Ryan | 3/9/2009, 3:03 pm EST

“Here’s a difference between Dead heads and Phish fans……No head would ever post…the Dead is back, haters can die. The band is good, there is no doubt, but the scene will never be what the Dead scene was…..it’s filled with posers!!!”

I am a Deadhead, know them way better than you do, like them more than Phish, and have am seeing them numerous times on their upcoming tour, thus proving you wrong

Harpua | 3/9/2009, 3:11 pm EST

This is to Parker:

Parker, Phish could play MMJ all day… but MMJ couldn’t touch YEM or Bowie. Agree to disagree.

CS in Denver | 3/9/2009, 3:41 pm EST

“The band is good, there is no doubt, but the scene will never be what the Dead scene was…..”

You mean the scene that took down the fence at Deer Creek (when it was Deer Creek), that scene? Or the scene with the collapsed parking structure in St. Louis? That scene? Or the scene that caused the Grateful Dead to actually write a letter to the fans in what would be the last Almanac before Jerry died to tell them to knock it off? That scene? This bickering between Dead and Phish Heads is pointless.

Whargarbl | 3/9/2009, 4:52 pm EST

Sounds like they are off to a good start. Stay healthy Trey!

You Dead vs. Phish vs. MMJ people are hilarious. Can’t we all just get along?

Snowy | 3/9/2009, 6:19 pm EST

To Harpua and all. I am a fan of awesome live music and take the Dead for being the Dead and Phish for being Phish. Both are awesome in their own right place in time. MMJ is great and they put on a great show on NYE. But the best shows musically of 2008 were Zappa Plays Zappa. Listed and you will believe. No need for debate just enjoy it all, Phish, The Dead, MMJ, ZPZ!!

Col4Bin | 3/9/2009, 6:41 pm EST

You Dead Heads need to be happy that they are playing again and stop worrying about Phish. Just enjoy the music and shut up.

slave2dariddim | 3/9/2009, 7:30 pm EST

Harpua-
I can give you 2 bands that fit the criteria you listed…Muse & The Raconteurs.

Silly hippy kids | 3/9/2009, 10:07 pm EST

Some it all up:
Traffic for hours
Smelly hippy kids who want to be cool dressing up in smelly hippy cloths strapped with stupid toys to keep themselves entertained while on drugs all the while trying to act cool to the even smellier old hippies that just want thier drugs and to recapture some other dumbass time they stood around in a parklot and did drugs.

Cullen | 3/10/2009, 4:02 am EST

Phish was great this weekend and undeniably brought back their rein as best jam band around. As far as all these people being critical about the scene, I thought the fans were really cool, no its not the Dead scene, It’s a different game. Phish kills the dead on a technical level, however the dead had more depth in their song writing. That being said phish holds their own corner of the market. I’d watch them over the Dead without jerry (even with Warren) any day. I hate that these bands have to be compared, the are sooo different. Phish crushed it this weekend and if you didn’t agree, I feel bad that you burnt cheddar to witness Rock and Roll history.

CR1ZZ | 3/10/2009, 4:08 am EST

It’s good to see they play the songs that the fans want to hear, unlike some bands. I saw eric clapton no more than a week ago and it was all well and good but sunshine, white room, she’s waiting, forever man, nobody knows you when you’re down and out and I’ve got a rock’n'roll heart were missing. Still great but just lacking certain hits. This show was’nt.

Come on | 3/10/2009, 9:34 am EST

It is not about their hits. Thats just a silly statement. Anything they play will be great

Locust The Lurker | 3/10/2009, 10:27 am EST

Phish doesn’t play greatest hits. They’ve never had hits. In my opinion that’s a good thing. Weird things happen when underground bands get big. They either become full of themselves or go the Nirvana/Kurt Cobain way. I LOVE Phish and all their songs are great.

g. young | 3/10/2009, 10:40 am EST

Widespread Panic forever! The South is the best!

Ween rules all.

me | 3/10/2009, 12:26 pm EST

Don’t like Phish or the scene? Then don’t come. It’d be great not to have to pay an arm and a leg for a ticket. Phish killed it Sunday night!

Icculus84 | 3/10/2009, 1:42 pm EST

Phish killed every night in my opinion. So stop arguing about everything you silly goof-balls. And come on, if you think that the phish scene is summed up by smelly hippies on drugs you’re far off. The only hippies these days are like 60 years old. As far as the scene I saw at Hampton; it was full of nice people, very friendly and helpful, that dressed well and dint smell bad. And drugs? Hell, yea why not. Like I say, if you don’t like something dont do it, if you do go for it. Everyone was nice and nothing negative happened around me the whole time. So chill out all you crazy bloggers… chill…

Tongue | 3/10/2009, 3:06 pm EST

What a way to close, they do that Stones song awesomely

headband | 3/10/2009, 8:01 pm EST

god phans r pathetic…. all 3 shows sounded like crap. wait till summer when trey finds his sound again…and who cares when the last fluffhead was and when the last bla bla bla was..geez…
NO. THEY WERE NOT PERFECT!

Hurricane | 3/11/2009, 5:11 am EST

Rolling Stone: if you need a writer you can cover Phish properly, I’m your man. Nothing outlandish? How about a Fluffhead opener? How about a first set that was as long as some whole shows in 03-04? I’ve hit 80 shows over the last 15 years and can say this…

PHISH IS BACK, DEAL WITH IT!!!

Pharewell | 3/11/2009, 11:49 am EST

They gave up five years ago for what reason? lack of creativity? They didn,t want to become a novilty? I don’t understand what has change besides thier bank accounts. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely loved this band back in the day! however they lost a devoted phan when they gave up five years ago! “Pharewell”

Hole | 3/11/2009, 12:38 pm EST

Sorry Folks but they killed every night on this run. All the haters who were once young and liked the group ten years ago…well you can rejoice with your new Nickelback cd’s…we don’t care if you were a fan Pharewell Phish…Phish still rocks and that is the point. Were they suppose to make some special new work for you? They like playing together…thats’s all….so Fuck off Pharewell

Icculus84 | 3/11/2009, 4:04 pm EST

Hahaha. Niiiiice.
Rocked.

Sailbadthesinner | 3/11/2009, 4:09 pm EST

Anyone who is comparing MMJ, Dead, Phish, etc…is not understanding. It’s about the music, period.

sid | 3/13/2009, 12:28 am EST

didn’t make the show but from what i’ve heard of the free downloads they ripped. it’s nice to have the jedi back and healthy!

G. Love | 3/13/2009, 8:23 pm EST

Phish are great.
Phan base is annoying.

spirittapper | 3/22/2009, 4:13 pm EST

I’ve been a fan since the early 90’s and love the band as much as anyone in the world.I can say they’ve changed my life in many positive ways. These shows reminded me what we’ve been missing for 4 1/2 years–the sheer LOVE of hearing these guys play together and feeling it with eveyone else. The place was bubbly with positive energy all 3 nights–the most fun ive had in years- I’m happy to see real music once again

TruPhan | 3/24/2009, 11:30 am EST

To everyone on this post that just doesn’t get it….

It’s about the music. If you’ve never been to a Phish show or to any concert for that matter that takes you to another place (and no, I’m not talking about drugs for everyone ready to jump on that) then you have no business bashing something just because you’re not a part of it. Certainly there are things about you and your likes/dislikes that bother all of us. It’s not just about hippies either. It’s an escape…from work…from a bad economy…from responsibility, even if just for a few hours.

baracas | 4/6/2009, 2:11 pm EST

The flub at the beginning of YEM was NOT intentional. I was right there when it happened, they were in the right key. The timing was off, period. Listen to the tapes and you’ll hear Trey say, “the start of that song again. . . I can’t believe it.” then goes on to say, “but this time it’s not going to be like the last time we started that song again.” Listen to the tapes A Phan.

Billy-the-skid | 6/17/2009, 5:22 pm EST

O so bad that its not the same. There comes a time when you should just remember the good (not that there ever was) and say Phuck-It…

Phind something new to Phreak Out about
