U2 Rock Fordham University: On the Ground at the “Secret” Set

“I joined a rock & roll band so I could get out of going to college,” Bono told students at New York’s Fordham University at 8 a.m. this morning, during a somewhat-secret six-song U2 set at the school’s picturesque Bronx campus that was aired on Good Morning America. “Maybe if it looked like this, and felt like this, things could have been different,” he added.

The show — which capped the band’s first-week publicity blitz for its new No Line on the Horizon — took place on the steps of the university’s gothic Keating Hall, in front of a snowy, packed quad of Fordham students and staff. A Fordham ID was required to enter the School of Rock-esque spectacle. “Edge, what would have been your major?” Bono asked. The guitarist’s response: a “Major key.”

Bono and Co. tore through three tracks off of No Line on the Horizon (”Get On Your Boots,” “Magnificent,” and “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight”), receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from the crowd of ecstatic students who may have still been in shock that classes were canceled for a surprise U2 concert at “Edward’s Parade,” a popular quad where students usually play Frisbee or catch rays. “I hope you like our new direction,” Bono told students before jumping into their second song. (Check out photos from U2’s Fordham gig — and the rest of their big week in the Big Apple.)

Students lined up as early as 1:30 a.m. to land a spot close to the band, and started chanting for “Bono!” as the sun came up. Despite their sleeplessness, students went wild, jumping around with Bono and maintaining their high energy throughout the show. Most of the college crowd seemed unfamiliar with the new songs, but ecstatic about the performance nonetheless. “Everyone probably downloaded U2’s new album last night,” said Andrew Inks, a Fordham junior.

“This song was written about Fordham University’s campus,” Bono said before introducing one of the new tunes. “Particularly Friday nights at the Fordham University campus. It’s called ‘I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight.’ ” Students caught onto the words (”Every generation gets a chance to change the world”) and appropriately screamed along.

“We started our band in high school. This is exactly where we come from,” Bono said during a brief interview with Good Morning America, which took place halfway through the set. Edge added, “We ended up recording in Morocco, New York City, London. We follow the inspiration, so here we are.” Larry Mullen Jr. also explained that his father would be pleased that he finally made it to college. Following the interview came “Beautiful Day,” “Breathe,” and “Vertigo,” all of which kept the student body singing along madly.

Good Morning America chose Fordham for the segment for its location and “warmth.” But as a Catholic and Jesuit university dedicated to graduating “men and women for others,” it is particularly fitting that U2 would perform at Fordham. “U2 transcends rockstardom,” said Fordham-president Father McShane, S.J. “They are deeply committed to social justice and advocacy.” McShane added that the band represents a group who display “great joy in life by giving back to others.” U2’s performance brought Fordham into 4.5 million homes this morning, “rightly putting Fordham on the map,” McShane said — and helping the campus justify its 2007 Newsweek title of “Hottest Catholic School in America.”

My husband and I were there this morning! I am a Senior graduating in May and couldn’t believe that U2 had chosen Fordham for this historic event! What a brilliant performance – heartfelt and intimate. I think that is exactly what they were aiming for when they made Edwards Parade the location. Thanks U2 – you made my Senior year even more memorable. A once in a lifetime experience.

Just a correction: it wasn’t Edge who was asked which major he would have studied. It was Larry. I just saw the clip on my DVR.

The new U2 album; hmmm, what can I say. Let me say i needed this album.
I’ve got st. mike around my neck and I’ve needed to talk to something or someone for a while now. This album has gave me some company. God is love. I’ve needed the right kind of blues. I’ve got it.

Thanx U2

ben | 3/7/2009, 11:33 pm EST

The most ridiculous and indeed biased thing to say is to call U2 the biggest band in the world…why are you guys so narrow minded and prejudiced when it comes to very mid-level bands such as U2 or newcomers such as Nickleback. If these are the best, then where do you place the greatest bands ever in the name of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Megadeth, Radiohead and many more?….you guys at rollingstone are terribly into some collusion with these unworthy bands, which is an obvious fact.

alan | 3/8/2009, 1:14 am EST

U2 is most worthy and the best band in the world.

ben ten to ben gay | 3/8/2009, 1:41 am EST

radiohead.. yes, an excellent band. The rest… no! Nickleback never wrote the songs: The Streets Have No Name, With or Without You, One, Electric Co., UFGF, MLK, In the Name of Love, One Tree Hill, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses the list goes on, and these are just singles. You my friend, need to listen to the music bad ass library. You no nothing about music. So Fuck Off.

Pam | 3/8/2009, 3:53 am EST

U2 have chosen a beautiful place to perform. They always try to stay in contact with people. This performance must have been great for all the students. I can only repeat that I love the album and I can absolutely identify myself with some songs.

U2 always build up much passion which is obvious in the quantity of posts in all those stories. Writing about my favourite band is something I always enJOY. But somebody is missing.

Nmar | 3/8/2009, 8:14 am EST

U2meister needs to be beaten with a stick. That comes from a half Irish lad..

The light over their eyes are a rip-off of a SPIN magazine cover of Tool many years ago, the photographer should be ashamed

Hana | 3/8/2009, 11:05 am EST

Heard the new album. the album is very good. “breathe” does not belong on any other u2 album, it is unique to NLOTH

Psh. | 3/8/2009, 11:15 am EST

When will Rolling Stone realize U2 blows. Bono is such a wanker. And anyone who calls himself “The Edge” just needs a firm slap in the face.

Quibbon | 3/8/2009, 1:23 pm EST

Since you don’t like U2, maybe you should go back to laying on your momma.

ben | 3/8/2009, 3:10 pm EST

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS are the best band in the world with the best guitarist ever who’s neck to neck with the likes of Hendrix and Page:John Frusciante…and hell with a magazine that calls U2 the biggest band in the world instead of writing reviews on the masterpiece record of 2009 :The Empyrean…RHCP RULE!

Truth | 3/8/2009, 3:24 pm EST

thanks for the utter horseshit.

RHCP | 3/8/2009, 3:59 pm EST

I saw Red Hot Chili live when they went on tour with Foo Fighters. The Foo Fighters put on a fun show, however RHCP sucked it up big time. People were booing them. Maybe it was just a bad night. They’ve yet to get my dollars since then. I paid a hundred bucks for that ticket. I’ve been going to U2 concerts for years; I’ve yet to be let down.

U2 overkill | 3/8/2009, 4:58 pm EST

snore, fart.

fhaze1 | 3/8/2009, 7:58 pm EST

I seen U2 in concert. They kick ass. CD’s don’t do em justice. They are for real. They come out and jam and put on a show. Just because some midget minded MF’er doesn’t like them and likes someone else better, keep it to yourself. We all like other bands too.

Anonymous | 3/9/2009, 11:42 am EST

So U2 just announced the cities for their upcoming tour. No Seattle. No San Francisco. No Montreal. However, they will be hitting Norman, OK, Raleigh, NC and Charlottesville, VA. Huh???

Good luck Bono, the first time you launch into a “Save Africa” speech or give a shout-out to President Obama. Those rednecks will boo you off the stage.

Anonymous | 3/9/2009, 1:27 pm EST

Maybe the person who posted that last comment didn’t hear that Obama won both Virginia and North Carolina. Or that Virginia has two Democratic senators and a Democratic govenor. On top of that Charlottesville is home to UVA. Keep up with the time you pretentious yankee

Just got the new RS in the mail – don’t know how, don’t know why, I did not subscribe. Anyway, Bono looks like a bigger choad than normal with his smudgy eye liner and rock and roll sneer. Then, a pull quote in the interview where he states he would rather buy a TV station than protest it (or something like that)… whatta dick this guy has become.

I was at Red Rocks, Under the Blood Red Sky, when these guys were great – not a bunch of self righteous ass holes. Go buy a personality boys… fuck TV.

so... | 3/9/2009, 1:36 pm EST

… I’m just wondering what’s up with Bono’s eyeliner. Did he finally realize he can’t save the world and went Emo?

Tim S | 3/9/2009, 1:40 pm EST

Why to go Fordham!

Anonymous | 3/9/2009, 2:05 pm EST

Hey Tim. Virginia is still the redneck South.

U2’s liberal politics and preaching play much better on the West Coast. Why skip over your base to play in Mayberry?

MB | 3/9/2009, 2:25 pm EST

New album is great! Magnificent, Unknown Caller, Fez Being Born Get On Your Boots great songs!: But did someone seriously bring up Nickelback in any way trying to compare them to U2? You may not like that people call U2 the best band out today but you know what? They deserve it! They tour longer then any other band, their shows never dissapoint, their albums never dissapoint, theyve been around with the original lineup since there debut which says a lot in character, soooo yes they are much better then Nickelback! lol

Matt Uk | 3/9/2009, 4:10 pm EST

What is this? The lets suck on U2’s balls site? They are all over the front page. Screw this site.
Im out!

A-Zar | 3/9/2009, 6:56 pm EST

They actually played 4 songs off of the new CD. Get on Your Boots, Magnificent, I’ll go Crazy if I don’t go Crazy Tonight, AND Breathe. I’m not sure why articles keep leaving out Breathe, but yea, they played that too…Then also Beautiful Day and Vertigo.

Sara | 3/9/2009, 7:09 pm EST

It really was a great show. And they had The Ruse open up with a couple of songs of their album Midnight in the City. They were almost better than U2!

Sam | 3/9/2009, 7:25 pm EST

I was at this show, and it was AWESOME!!!! totally worth the lack of sleep =D……U2 is def Fordham’s new official band

sixstringer63 | 3/9/2009, 8:13 pm EST

Do any of the people who continue to spew their vitriolic bile about U2 have their ears open..? Let alone their minds? These guys rock. U2’s tunes bind both sides of our brains with both the urge to dance, the need to contemplate love and loss, the experience of being a human being and the possibilities of this whacked world we inhabit. I don’t give a shit that they are multimillionaires. To me they are still Irish Punks who just want to work their asses off and make great records. God bless ‘em.

basser | 3/9/2009, 11:14 pm EST

Why is Matt UK upset that U2 is geting press for their new record and tour?
Uh, take a look around, from Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly (especially), Yahoo News and everywhere else, and you have to look at Tina Fey and hear how supposedly wondeful and gifted she is. Fey is overrated. She’s not funny, isn’t THAT GREAT of a writer, and isn’t the best actress around. U2 is definitely worthy of more attention than someone like Fey. I think Fey, Brangelina, Britney Spears and so many other stars get much more press and cheers form Big Media than U2 does. Yet Fey has yet to create something like The Joshua Tree, War, Achtung Baby or even the best songs off All You Can’t Leave Behind. U2 has made a worthy catalog of attention, and the new CD is actually pretty good.

P.S. I’m not even saying I disagree with Fey’s politics. It’s her talent level and media (over)exposure we’re talking about here …

peace gang! :)

Kevlar Habanero | 3/9/2009, 11:21 pm EST

No Line On the Horizon is their best recording in years! Have not stopped listening to it since I bought it.

ill go see them!

A Disappointed Fan | 3/10/2009, 5:42 am EST

As a die-hard fan of U2 for many years, I was always disappointed to know my country(South Korea) would not be included as a part of their “so-called” world tour. And yet again, U2 didn’t fail to disappoint me this time when they announced their tours would take place outside Asia. U2 plans their concerts mainly in Europe and North America(also in South America on rare occasions), but the only country in Asia to ever hold a U2 tour is Japan, on a few occasions. Why? Are U2 too good for us Asians? I’m more than a fan of U2; I really do admire them for all their humanitarian campaigns that made this world a better place(I don’t have to explain why Bono was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize). Shouldn’t such a band have at least the decency to inspire themselves to their fans all around the world?

deano | 3/10/2009, 6:59 am EST

Personally, I think it’s ridiculous for a bunch of multimillionaires to dare to ask this kind of money for a concert ticket in this economy. Not just U2, but all of the greedy big names going out this summer. Putting food on the table for my family comes first this year, probably next year too. No wonder downloading has killed CDs.

Esquire | 3/10/2009, 9:58 am EST

Had to happen the year after I graduated..Huh…Really????

Clara | 3/10/2009, 10:41 am EST

U2 rocks, period!

Watchdog | 3/10/2009, 11:03 am EST

U2 and REM–two bands that should have called it a day ten years ago.

kace | 3/10/2009, 1:25 pm EST

first i was dissapointed but and then i listened again and i get used to it its sounds pretty classy
NOW I LOVE IT!

Anonymous | 3/10/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Hey Watchdog: stick with Nickelback and Creed.
You clearly have no clue what good music is all about.

Richard Brian Penn | 3/10/2009, 3:15 pm EST

I was a bit disapointed, but at the same time U2 puts out better music than 90% of the bands out there. Just not their best album.

Anonymous | 3/10/2009, 4:14 pm EST

awesome story!!!!

sucker | 4/10/2009, 12:28 pm EST

wow, to bad the new record blows …what happend to U2?
