The Eagles At Center of Goddamn “Fast Lane” Censorship Battle

While radio stations across America wrestle with what to do with Britney Spears’ kinda-explicit “If U Seek Amy,” one station in Alabama is fighting its own censorship battle, thanks to the Eagles. Idolator tipped us off to the Birmingham Weekly, which somehow reports with a straight face that classic rock station Eagle 106.9 is editing a lyric in the Eagles’ “Life in the Fast Lane.” The offending line? “We’ve been up and down this highway, haven’t seen a goddamn thing,” with the “god” snipped off the “damn” and replaced by lyric-free music.

“It’s everybody’s policy,” station manger Ray Nelson said of the edit, “people find it offensive.” For the record, the uber-sensitive FCC has no problem with “goddamn,” but apparently the Third Commandment — the Thou Shalt Not Take the Lord’s Name in Vain one — considers the lyric a violation. The Eagles’ Don Felder was made aware of the station’s edit, and while he’d rather the song remain unchanged, he told the Birmingham Weekly, “There are people who have extreme religious beliefs that would find it offensive. I can understand why they wouldn’t like to hear it.”

Our humble opinion: if you have a problem with “goddamn” in your lyrics, you probably shouldn’t be listening to rock radio in the first place. There’s a ton of blasphemous content like sex, drugs and whatever else all over the lyrics of those classic rock songs. Or, the Eagle could just take “Life in the Fast Lane” out of the rotation and avoid this whole situation. And isn’t it ironic that the station is name the Eagle? The Birmingham Weekly is polling its readers as to whether the edit is justified or too religiously correct, with results due out in their March 19th issue. Rock Daily readers, we’ll poll you ourselves: is this censorship valid?

Here’s a list of songs that might be censored or banned according to the Eagle’s strict standards: Readers’ Rock List – If U See Kay Songs (Explicit Titles)

This song is 33 years old.

Did they JUST get around to being offended by this?

This is ridiculous. If they are going to censor or ban, DON’T play the music. Maybe the station needs to change it’s format to play folk songs or something along those lines. They could turn into a religious talk station, duh.

Who the fuck are you?

Let’s make a list of classic rock songs you have heard edited after years of play on the radio unedited.

Here in DC they edit Pink Floyd’s “Money” to erase the word “bullshit.”

DC radio also edits Steve Miller! in Take the Money and Run to sing “funky kicks” or just just a scramble sound, instead of “funky shit” “going down in the city”

And, I have heard the last few lines of the Stone’s “Start Me Up” scrambled out.

And perhaps I am being conspiratorial, but I have not heard ZZ Top’s “Jesus Just Left Chicago” on the radio in a long time.

Talk about censorship! How come Rollingstone.com deleted my post inviting others to list the rock songs that have been played for years on the radio, but we now hear edited on the radio?

Oops. Now its back. Thank you!

This is re-fucking-diculous. I’d rather watch Glen Frey rape Ben Stiller than listen to an edited Eagles song.

I cannot understand why this is a top story on Rolling stone magazine’s website. I can’t even see why michael jackson doing a tour in london is so important really. There must be something more interesting happening in the world of music. Woodstock 09 would qualify more interesting and maybe even Dylan’s new album but this is just stupid. That lyric in that song is quite crucial, it just adds to the whole ‘I-don’t-care-what-happens-to- me-because-I’m-a-rock-musician ‘ feeling of the song. I agree they should’nt be playing rock on this radio if thats a problem.
I wonder how much AC/DC this station plays.

Send lawyers Guns and Money the Shit has hit the fan.All this censorship started after 9/11.

This is news? I’ve been listening to that edit on the radio as long as I can remember. It ain’t just Birmingham and it ain’t anything new

This is OLD – OLD – OLD…here we go again with it. 1977…2009. That was back in my teens. By now we should all be tired of the song anyway. I haven’t played the damn record/Cd thing since way back…everytime it pops up on my car radio, I skip it. There is worse stuff out there in song lyrics.

So these guys are worried about offending religious folks, just stupid. If you dont like hearing “it”, then change the goddamned channel.

CR1ZZ | 3/6/2009, 7:06 pm EST

I will never get tired of any eagles songs. Maybe a couple but especially not ‘Life in the fast lane’

I am not from Alabama but live here now, and I find the recent editing of “Life in the Fast Lane” completely irritating. It’s impossible to enjoy the rest of the song when you know that a moment of silence is coming up which will completely disrupt the flow of the music. It would still be stupid, but would be more tolerable, if another word were inserted in the place of “goddamn,” but all we hear is silence where the word should be. It’s absurd. Interesting–I haven’t noticed any deletion of the clear “goddamn” at the end of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.”
