Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will both take the stage in support of transcendental meditation when the onetime Beatles perform at the “Change Begins Within” benefit concert at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on April 4th. The concert will benefit the David Lynch Foundation which, according to a press release, “raises funds to teach one million at-risk children to meditate — giving them life-long tools to overcome stress and violence and promote peace and success in their lives.” Yes, that David Lynch, the director who brought you unsettling films like Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks.

Any time you have Macca and Ringo, there’s not much need for a supporting cast, but Lynch has never been one to follow the rules: Eddie Vedder, Sheryl Crow, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Ben Harper, Moby and Donovan — who is head of the musical wing of the David Lynch Foundation — will also perform at the event. Russell Simmons and Lynch vet Laura Dern will also appear. “In moments of madness, it has helped me find moments of serenity,” McCartney said of transcendental meditation in a statement. “I would like to think that it would help provide them a quiet haven in a not-so-quiet world.”

Ringo added, “It gives me great pleasure to be part of this evening. I feel the aims of this charity are wonderful!” The Beatles, along with Donovan, famously made a journey to India in 1968 to study TM with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. While no announcement whether McCartney and Starr will perform together has been made, the duo most recently played with each other at the George Harrison tribute show Concert for George in 2002. Tickets for the “Change Begins Within” concert go on sale March 9th.

Good luck getting tickets.

Funny, Ringo was the first to bail on the Maharishi. ah well, they should do a tour together with a big psychedelic light show. It’ll make up for the lack of Pink Floyd.

BlissCat | 3/6/2009, 12:44 pm EST

Thanks for letting us know about this very worthwhile concert. It’s great to hear that these great artists want to show their support for such a good cause. I practice Transcendental Meditation and so does most of my family, and I totally agree with Paul’s quote about the need to give children “a quiet haven in a not-so-quiet world”. Transcendental Meditation is a great technique and it would really help our children in school if they were given a chance to experience the deep silence and profound rest that it provides.

MoonShadow | 3/6/2009, 5:32 pm EST

Yea, I heard Ringo left India first because of the food. He wanted his fish n chips and all they had was rice and dahl! Anyway I’m a big fan of the Beatles and Transcendental Meditation too. I hope they play Across The Universe and Cosmically Consciousness.

This will be a great show. The new documentary, SCHOOL OF THOUGHT, will show you why these music superstars are doing this benefit concert at Radio City. The film is about Transcendental Meditation in schools and what the David Lynch Foundation is doing to bring meditation to students everywhere. Watch the first eight minutes of the movie for free at perripictures.com

It’s great when big name artists donate their time to worthy charities. I went to the David Lynch Foundation website and watched the videos of how Transcendental Meditation is helping people from all walks of life. This is really a worthy cause.

StubHubbers ruined this concert and took all the tickets from the real fans. It makes me sick.

flygirl | 3/9/2009, 1:14 pm EST

Tickets were already gone the MOMENT they were ’supposedly’ to begin selling them. Love the idea of the gig, but am completely fed up with the CROCK of **** that is Ticketmaster.

Carol | 3/9/2009, 3:29 pm EST

Can’t believe it sold right out to the scalpers. This is a shame that only the scalpers had access to the tickets and will make $$$$. Fans didn’t have a chance.

Beatlemaniac | 3/9/2009, 4:50 pm EST

I can’t believe it. TicketMaster used to be my friend. But they’ve really screwed it all up this time for Beatles fans everywhere. Sold out in the presale! Before the general public even had access to them.
What kind of benefit concert is this? Aren’t they supposed to be profitting humanity and kindness? Seems so hypocritical and corrupt in my opinion.
All we can hope for is that Paul & Ringo tour this summer together or something. Still, I’m disappointed.

JOEY | 3/9/2009, 5:55 pm EST

Funny how I was logged on at exact moment tix went on-sale and couldn’t get a single seat at any price level and best available. Should be an investigation. Sounds like another ticketmaster scam to me

Hello | 3/9/2009, 7:40 pm EST

The truth is that the tickets did not go to the scalpers, but were 70% presold a day earlier to long time meditators. I am one and it was because of the Beatles that I started doing meditation in the first place. The other 30% were sold in the first hour on March 9th.

disappointed beatles fan | 3/9/2009, 7:48 pm EST

it is ridiculous that tickets are selling for $9000 a piece on stubhub. thats only a couple thousand away from my college tuition. what happened to concerts for the fans??

Tika Matic | 3/9/2009, 9:16 pm EST

Superb! Them playing together for such a noble cause. Yes, Transcendental Meditation can and with a time shall bring those peaceful moments to all kids in the world. I know it from my own experience and from so many of my friends. Thank you, Sir Paul McCartney, thank you Ringo!

23yroldBeatleWife | 3/10/2009, 8:20 am EST

I tried to get the benefit tickets through the foundation, and when they put me on the waitlist, they emailed me the presale code. I got center Orchestra level tickets. All you who are complaining, there are tons of websites out there that have the presale codes posted the day before. Who didn’t think they would sell out so fast? Paul and Ringo? I mean, come on.

JOEY | 3/10/2009, 11:40 am EST

If 70% went to the meditators, I will bet the other 30% ended up at City Hall.

Venice | 3/20/2009, 2:18 am EST

Paul should put his ego in storage and do a concert with Ringo. It uld be as big as Woodstock!! And they shoul do exclusively Beale songs not a bunch of new stuff-but maybe 1 or 2 new! And they should have JULIAN LENNON as a stand-in Paul since he’s well liked and very reminiscent of JJHN. And they can have son of George Harrison on guitar. The concert would be sooo big that people would come from all over the world to be a part of it. Ticket sales ould go through the roof and it would be a Histoical World Event. Too bad Paul just doesn’t have the insight tosee this happening!
Oh and by the way. Cynthia Lennon woul be given a prominent place on teh grass in front, and Yoko Ono would be ejected from he premies i she showed up!

Regards!! Venice

Brittany Horn | 4/4/2009, 2:07 am EST

Rolling Stone, YOU SORELY FAILED to mention Paul Horn (hailed as “THE founding father of new age music” and one of the first twelve teachers of TM in the US) who will be performing this evening! He was also far more involved than any other visiting artist with the studies that took place in India both in ‘66 as well as ‘68 with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Also, Horn is completely responsible for The Maharishi’s expedition to the US, his appearance on the Johnny Carson Show and his debut front cover of Look Magazine. Talk about innovation.

This concert should surpass the status symbol as it represents and aims to extend a cause that is far more pure.

Rolling Stone, get the full story straight! Im highly disappointed.

At least my family will get to be apart of this incredible event this evening.

AudreyLynne | 4/4/2009, 6:27 pm EST

I am so psyched to go to this. I think the benefit concert for transcendental meditation is such an awesome thing.

PEACE♥♥
