New Music Report: Reader Reviews of U2’s “Horizon,” Plus Neko Case

3/4/09, 2:37 pm EST

There’s no question this is a big week for U2: the Irish legends released their 11th studio album, No Line on the Horizon, started a five-night stint on Letterman, got part of a New York City street named after them, and graced the cover of our new issue. In last week’s New Music Report we took a close look at David Fricke’s five-star review of the album, so this week we’re letting the readers have the floor: click above to watch Rolling Stone’s Caryn Ganz break down three very different opinions on U2’s latest based on three reviews submitted to our Website.

Here’s a quick rundown: In a three-star review, jonathanhigh5 writes, “It feels like it could’ve really a huge step in a new direction, an electronic rock album for this decade. But by the middle of the album, starting with ‘Get On Your Boots,’ they start playing it safe again.” Reader bollocks was even less generous in a two-star appraisal: “While some herald the album as a Zooropa-esque foray into boundary-pushing, those of us who have ever heard any indie rock at all can attest to the fact that this album is still very much mainstream U2.” But many readers agreed with Fricke’s star rating, too. PamBonamusica contributed, “This album takes us to a musical journey that connects heavy guitars with Arabic influences, gospel chants with experimental sounds, energy with atmosphere. … In all songs I can feel the joy of U2 playing together.”

To check out the joy of U2 hanging out in a photo studio together, check out the footage Anton Corbijn shot at our cover shoot in this New Music Report (and for more, head into this story: U2 Talk Horizon Follow-Up, Spider-Man Musical in RS Cover Story). Plus, we’ve got a rundown on Neko Case’s excellent new album, Middle Cyclone in here, too.

This album sucks.
5 stars?
Usaully Fricke is right on, and champions lost classics, etc.
But seriuosly, there are way better albums in the last 6 months than this egomanical turd.

This is an excellent album but it’s a grower. We now live in an age of instant gratification, and well, aren’t we seeing the effects of that on the economy and on society as a whole. There are songs that will be more pleasurable at 1st listen and other songs that will take time. Best of all, many people won’t agree as to what exactly the best songs are. The beauty of this music is that none of the songs are what you think they are at 1st listen. And, if you don’t approach this music with an open mind & heart then you will miss out. With ‘No Line On The Horizon’ U2 have created an album with an exposed beating heart, as honest as humanly possible. It is up to you as a listener to check your cynicism at the door. It’s about time to end the ‘indie’ snobbery that is just an illusion. Trends come and go. Music of the soul is above categorization. And, if you are buying into some ‘alt’ lifestyle and beating off to Animal Collective just because pitchfork says you should, then shame on you. You’ll be left with raw blistered hands and an emptiness in your gut. And, the media will be on to the next trend. Listen without prejudice and decide on your own. Stop merely collecting and start CONNECTing. U2 isn’t a trend. Their music is here to stay. And it will be around long after you and me are long gone.

I have been a die-hard fan for 20 years and seen them about 130+ times so I have been with them through good and bad. I got the CD today and found myself waiting for the explosives of “Beautiful day” or “Vertigo” and it did not happen. Thats not to say I don’t like the release, I just want the goose bump tingle I usually get with one amazing hook. I love “boots”, it just seemed strange that they are singing about sexy boots……..not the usual for them. All in all, I love the band and will love this CD too.

i agree with lary_nx, with that essay he wrote

I appreciate your enthusiasm lary_nx, but this line — Stop merely collecting and start CONNECTing — made me spit coffee on my desk from laughter. This sounds like a faux cool corporate slogan for some sort of new handheld device no one will buy. Or a Zune.

NLOTH is still unfolding for me. I can’t arrive at a rating yet. But I will say it feels different. Particularly liking “Cedars of Lebanon’ and ‘Stand Up Comedy’ which sound brilliant.

Not what I expected. I’ve listened to the album 3 times now and to me it feels overproduced like they are reaching for something different, yet familiar. U2 never really arrives to their destination musically on any of the tracks. However, there are some signs of greatness in several of the songs and it is reminiscent of October where there is lots of great material, but it doesn’t quite ever reach its full potential. Then War came along, which is a complete masterpiece, along with JT, AB, and ATYCLB! I absolutely love this band! Unless you worship them, I believe most people will forget about this album rather quickly, just as October. Historically, one can argue that U2 tends to build up to great albums. Aside from Boy, (which is incredible and if you haven’t listened to it in awhile, break it out and you’ll truly appreciate their greatness, as it still sounds relevant today) War, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, and All that You Can’t Leave Behind had albums in-between that were good, but not great which were preludes to something very special on the horizon so to speak. Sure there are many great songs on the other albums, but as we look at U2 albums in their entirety, they were just lacking something to keep you listening. Knowing this band, I’m sure NLOTH is just another step in their evolution/musical journey and I for one am looking forward to their next album – just hope it happens sooner rather than later:-)

Unlistenable,egomaniacal dog shit….not even 1 star.Without a doubt,the worst record they have ever made.

lalalalalala | 3/8/2009, 1:05 am EST

Well, opinions are like assholes, honey. Everybody’s got one and everybody thinks everybody else’s stinks.

Party Girl | 3/8/2009, 1:07 am EST

No Line on the Horizon is light years beyond us. As usual, with music from U2. Not many people understand it or appreciate it until years and years have gone by.

xdreem | 3/8/2009, 11:02 am EST

No band compares to U2… doesn’t matter what they do, they rock. I am just grateful for every new album. They evolve with every turn and not many bands can do that. Give credit where credit is due.

Dave | 3/9/2009, 1:39 pm EST

I havent felt this bad about a U2 cd since “POP”. What a let-down.

richard hurtz | 3/9/2009, 4:26 pm EST

warhorse destroys bonzo. warhorse will destroy you. i was not in warhorse from worchester mass, so one day when i get enough self respect, i will leap from a speeding train. u2 should follow me into infinity. they had self respect. maybe they can find it again and kill themselves

JACKHAMMER | 3/20/2009, 9:06 pm EST

this album is horrible. Somebody here should of retired from the music scene a few years ago when their music was good.

Very disappointed.
