Lil Wayne Channels John Hughes Teen Flicks In “Prom Queen” Video

3/4/09, 1:17 pm EST

Above is “Prom Queen,” the first video from Lil Wayne’s upcoming rap-rock record Rebirth. The song, like the video, tells the story of a school’s prom queen who thwarted Weezy back in the day, but now that he’s a big rapper she totally wants him. The video starts out like a John Hughes film, and it’s fun to count the 1980s high school movie clichés — pining for the girl across the aisle from you in class? Check. Drama in the lunchroom? See: Better Off Dead and Just One of the Guys. A prom: Every teen film ever.

By the second verse, however, the video takes a dramatic turn and turns into a tale of “look at me now,” as after high school the prom queen has a baby and struggles through an ordinary life while Weezy ascends to multiplatinum and Grammy-winning success, as evidenced by the newspaper clippings. Finally in present day, the prom queen goes to Wayne’s concert, the rapper spots her in the front row, pays her attention for a brief moment and then it’s him thwarting her. He totally flipped the script on that girl. Hard work does pay off in the end.

Rolling Stone recently previewed Weezy’s Auto Tunetastic Rebirth, the rapper’s attempt to reinvent both hip-hop and rock, and we were impressed. There’s homages to Coldplay and old-school Beastie Boys, a Prince-inspired track and even an Avril Lavigne cameo. For much more on our Rebirth first listen, click below:

weezy who?? | 3/4/2009, 4:41 pm EST

Only in America can somebody with such an obvious lack of talent be featured in rolling stone. This song sucks.I can’t name one good thing about it.This dude should just stick to listening to bad brains and thank god he even one dollar to his name because he can only dream of having talent like they do.

So the strategy is…

1. Separate Lil Wayne from his flow and lyrical jokes that make up his best moments
2. Separate Lil Wayne from the hottest hip-hop productions, which generally carry him through his weaker moments
3. Auto-tune and Limp Bizkit guitars
4. ???
5. Profit?

…Okay!

This guy is a loser. And this video is bullshit. He was barely alive when the movies he’s spoofing were what MY generation were watching. Get a life and go away, you fucking freak!

David | 3/4/2009, 10:33 pm EST

its…*bad*. I, personally, dont hate it, but its a bad, bad song. I don`t like it. And this is from a Lil Wayne fan. I bought Tha Carter 3, have most of his singles, almost all of his mix-tapes, and Skys the Limit and DR. carter are two of the best rap songs ive ever heard. But this is bad. Im talking about the song, btw. 2 out of 5 stars, maybe. The actual video is HORRIBLE. I was hoping this was all a brilliant, phenoix-esc prank but i guess not. I love hot revolver, tho.

Not to defend Weezy’s song, but I submit to you Jimi Hendrix.

How many artists rap or rock ever switch genres??? His albums and mixtapes have always been good and in sure rebirth will be the same. You shouldnt dismiss his work before you have heard it!

Stuff like this is what makes my 64-year-old Dad question current mainstream music. Who can blame him? I question how people can tolerate this. I give this kid his props when deserved, but stick to what you know…SHEESH.

This is really sad, and just because someone has enough respect for their favorite genre of music and wish that it would maintain some artistic qualities, doesn’t make you a “hater”.
For Wayne to be taken serious by the rock fans, he would have to not be Lil Wayne.
This is actually worse than that Framing Hennley band covering “Lolli Pop”.

K Money | 5/2/2009, 11:39 pm EST

king fresh, you can’t take the rock world by storm with auto-tuned singing. It’s not racist. He’s a rapper, he can’t sing, otherwise he wouldn’t use pitch correction technology. This sounds like some bad Fall Out Boy song. This is a joke

mantera | 5/21/2009, 6:47 pm EST

I’m sorry did this article say he’s trying to REINVENT rock?!?! yeah, ok… good luck with that one. this song has to be by-far the hugest sack of shit I’ve ever heard and lil wayne is a joke. i know some of you are like “OH YOU JUST JEALOUS”, but that obviously isn’t the case, i live a very happy life, i just think he sucks. it’s a my opinion whether you like it or not.

Blacks invented Rock!!! | 6/12/2009, 12:54 pm EST

For the person that stated that black people can’t rock is funny and show’s that you do not know the history of rock. First rock song was about a thunderbird and it was by Ike Turner. Know your history.

dirp | 6/14/2009, 12:27 am EST

the song is bad. i honestly cannot understand the appeal.

Reece | 6/14/2009, 1:35 am EST

Wat the fuck Rolling stone??? are you that fucking sold out that you’ll pander to the worst sack of shit music for a bag of money??? Its fun to count the 1980s high school movies cliches? cliches are a good thing?? This is fucking bullshit you think of how many fans of lil wayne actually buy rolling stones?? leave them to XXL while your real fans are packing out the door even NME doesn’t sell out this bad!!!
