Britney Spears’ Sexy Circus: Pop Star Returns to the Stage in New Orleans

Britney Spears put another notch in her comeback belt by powering through the nearly two-hour opening date of her Circus Starring Britney Spears tour last night (March 3rd) in New Orleans. The show, in her home state of Louisiana, marked the pop star’s long-awaited return to the stage: she ditched her Onyx Hotel Tour (which supported 2003’s In the Zone) in June 2004 after suffering a knee injury on the set of “Outrageous” video and only took the stage a handful of times since, most notably in 2007, when she performed a few poorly received nightclub gigs billed as the M+Ms.

(Check out photos of Spears decked out in sexy circus outfits at her opening-night gig here.)

As MTV News reports, surrounded by a giant Big Top spectacle and acrobats and backup dancers aplenty, Spears danced her way through the almost exclusively upbeat set list, which kicked off with a video greeting starring Perez Hilton. Each of the show’s four acts (Circus, House of Fun – Anything Goes, Freakshow/Peepshow, Electo Circ) featured a plethora of outfit changes that ranged from revealing to very revealing — she donned a naughty policewoman’s outfit for closers “Womanizer” and “Circus,” a Madonna-esque swirl bra for “Radar” and an Indian-inspired look for her Bollywood remix of “Me Against the Music” (which unfortunately didn’t feature a cameo by the Material Mom — though the tour has only just begun). Though some reports indicate Spears did some live singing, the L.A. Times‘ Ann Powers notes that the show was dominated by backing tracks.

Spears only let the tempo drop for ballad “Everytime,” which she sang while sitting in the nook of a giant umbrella suspended from the ceiling. The emotional track from In the Zone was not on the set list Spears released two days ago, when she gave fans a sneak peek at Circus rehearsals. As promised, though, she only dipped into her early catalog for a remix of “… Baby One More Time,” the breakout song from her 1999 debut. Perhaps Spears, who’s made it through her share of troubling times the past few years, isn’t so eager to look back at the past. The new Britney is content to play pretend in perhaps the ultimate kids’ playground for a few hours — and give fans a bit of high-flying escapism to lose themselves in, too.

Performing a Britney Spears concert would be the easiest job in the world…
travel to all sorts of cities, and just dance on stage a little bit and strut, get lots of attention, pretend to sing…and then turn your mic on for one song and give an atonal mess of a live performance that the audience doesn’t really care about the quality of as long as you look pretty because they’re a bunch of shallow sheep.

Countess | 3/4/2009, 12:53 pm EST

hahaha dvnovert!!! dance on stage a little bit? the easiest job? i wld like to c u dance the way Britney dances!! no one can dance like Britney! no one has her charisma! no one ever put on a show the way she does it!! and yes she does sing when she’s not dancing!! NO ONE, then, NO ONE can perform a Britney concert except Britney Spears!!!!

LNA | 3/4/2009, 1:29 pm EST

So déjà-vu…can’t dance, can’t sing and the outfits are not flattering. Britney Spears is an illusion in itself, if it wasn’t for the low IQ and bad taste of her hardcore fans she would be gone a long time ago.

George | 3/4/2009, 1:32 pm EST

She can’t even sing live. What a joke. This isn’t music — it’s a damn sideshow.

lynn | 3/4/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Britney concerts are just really fun to go to. Its a great show for people who need to get away and just have fun. Its just like the author said, “flying escapism to lose themselves in, too”. Thats exactly what a Britney concert does. It’s just a whole lot of fun!

Heather | 3/4/2009, 1:38 pm EST

I went to Britney’s concert last night and she was awesome!!! She danced great and looked amazing. The only thing I was disappointed about was that she did not talk the crowd at all until she was said bye.

pa womanizer | 3/4/2009, 1:43 pm EST

WOO HOO!! Britney Spears is BACK!! How can a 27 year old woman look this great!! I already had cellulite at 22!! Sweet, Sexy, Talented! and…..of course… CHA…CHING!!! She can get ANY man on the face of the universe! Love you Britney!!

susan | 3/4/2009, 2:30 pm EST

I think People Magazine gave the most honest review of this concert. Go read it. She mimed the entire concert including ballads and barely danced. Alot of riding on props and strutting the stage. Very disappointing. And yes, I was there.

AJ | 3/4/2009, 2:55 pm EST

It is all for entertainment. If you don’t like it, then don’t go see it. The End.

Haleigh | 3/4/2009, 3:10 pm EST

I went to the Britney concert and I thought she did an amazing job. She performed really well, and looked awesome!

me | 3/4/2009, 3:17 pm EST

i was at the new orleans show, and britney was AMAZING!!! all these people talking about her lipsinging..so what..we know shes does that and we still want to see her show. she is the ultimate entertainer. i hope she comes on tour to new orleans again!!

Kureljames | 3/4/2009, 3:33 pm EST

I would like all you people putting Britney down to do what she does in a concert and try to sing live. Its not as easy as it looks. Don’t talk down about it until you’ve actually tried it. I do agree that the dancing/choreography could have been much better but it was a good show *( yes I was there last night )* none the less.

Trisha | 3/4/2009, 3:35 pm EST

Britney’s concert was great to watch! LOvE her!

danny | 3/4/2009, 4:48 pm EST

she’s a good person and sure the show was awesome, but what’s the point of a singer in a show and not singing at all

Anonymous | 3/4/2009, 5:02 pm EST

I wouldn’t pay a dime to watch a talentless slut lip synch her way through a bunch of forgettable, lightweight pop tunes.

I’d rather stick a pencil in my eye.

Tiago! | 3/4/2009, 5:54 pm EST

very Good Britney Spears!
Show Woman!!!
I LOVE!

its a circus allrite | 3/4/2009, 6:15 pm EST

all this broad is good for is looking at. she is pure eye candy. she has no talent and is simply another tool in the music business. someone who gets paid loads of money by the record label as long as they have control of her. just like all those other pop stars. there all a bunch of puppets who lip sync during performances and are obsessed by youg teens who dont know any better. they dont even write there own music!!!

Brian Gallagher | 3/4/2009, 6:23 pm EST

I am not a fan of Spears or her music. It`s manufactured nature goes against every thing I stand for. I still for some reason want her to be happy. I feel she has been used and abused. While this ain`t my bag I think she is a good person.

Jimmy | 3/4/2009, 6:33 pm EST

You are not going to be famous if you can only sing well, and i don’t call this a talent. Britney has many other special things which made her become a pop princess… I love her!!

Britney lover5412 | 3/4/2009, 6:59 pm EST

I love her and stand up for her! she went through alot that no one knows about! my friend is BEST FRIENDS with her dad and told me why she had a bad year! but everyone makes mistakes i mean come on like u havent mae on!

OMG this was the best concert I ever been. GREAT SHOW!!!! What a way to come back Britney!

roxy | 3/4/2009, 9:43 pm EST

I am so excited reading these reviews! I live in Texas and I am a mom of two teen girls. We will see the show in Houston. I will say that I am very impressed with how Britney has come a long way. Everyone who is quick to judge her needs to understand that her upbringing was fast and not good because of bad parenting. we have been a fan of Britney since she was 16 and my girls grew up with her. She looks awesome and has proved that she can turn things around! Go For It Britney! You are beautiful and deserve all the fame. You have worked hard and good things come to those who wait!

Courtney | 3/4/2009, 9:51 pm EST

I don’t care how much skin she shows and how much she wiggles her ass, she’s a singer! She’s supposed to sing. Miming through an entire concert that her fans have pay tickets to see is an insult.

P.S. It is possible to dance and actually sing in a concert. Four letters for you P-I-N-K. Her concerts are always amazing and she even sings upside down hanging 20 metres above the crowd. Britney’s pathetic.

mitch | 3/4/2009, 10:50 pm EST

good for her, but i really couldn’t care less

John | 3/5/2009, 2:07 am EST

This has made me even more excited, as I’m attending the March 23rd. show. She’s gradually improving and showcasing her strength as a performer, and overall person. Great job, Brit and best wishes!

Britney fan | 3/5/2009, 3:23 am EST

Britney is the best dancer and the best performer in all existence. She sang in the circus tour but with playback on. She danced like a goddess for two solid hours and sang.Even her haters know that she is the best.

P.S Pink is a pathetic singer who has the simplest tunes and doesn’t dance in her live shows. She walks around and shakes her ass once in a while. If you call that dancing or performing then you must be a RETARD.

Justice | 3/5/2009, 3:30 am EST

She is the most gifted dancer I have ever seen. Singing is one form of talent, dancing is another form of talent. There are n number of live shows where I have seen Britney singing extremely well. But in a comeback show she had to choose between singing and dancing. SHE OBVIOUSLY CHOSE DANCING,THAT’S HER BEST PART AND SHE DOES THAT EXTREMELY WELL.

Madonna,JLo,Pink,Beyonc e are all trash when compared to Britney’s dancing. Even if they practice all through their life they will never be able to dance like Britney.

killblondes | 3/5/2009, 7:33 am EST

Justice you are on crack.

Krys | 3/5/2009, 11:38 am EST

There are two types of artists who tour: Those you go to see for the ’show’ and those you go to see for their musical ability. Occasionally they overlap but, overall, you get one or the other. Britney is far from being the most talented singer on the planet; she’s a showgirl and you’ll only end up disappointed if you go expecting an earth-shattering vocal performance from her. In my own experience she doesn’t put on that great a show either. You’d be better off saving your money for an act worth the extortionate ticket fee!

kristy | 3/5/2009, 12:26 pm EST

krs, What are you saying? you are totally wrong about her singing!! from what we have seen on utube videos of recent concerts she sings like a diva! And her dancing is awesome! She has proved that she can overcome any obstacle. I say if you got it than flaunt it!

KEN STEVENS | 3/5/2009, 12:47 pm EST

I’M GOING TO THE ATLANTA SHOW TONIGHT, I’VE NEVER SEEN HER IN CONCERT BUT I’VE SEEN HER PERFORM LIVE PLENT OF TIMES. I LOVE THE NEW CD AND CAN’T WAIT TO SEE HER PERFORM. PRINCE IS AN ARTIST, SHE’S AN EXCELLENT PERFOMER.

So everyone that hates the fact that Britney has a huge following and people love her can suck it!! She isn’t in too form yet I won’t say that she is fully back until she gives a 2000 or 2001 vma qualty performance. Granted I have not seen the show yet (Sunday night will change that) the fact that she is even attempting a comeback is amazing! The girl wants to be a legend and i beleave she will go down as another Madonna!! I have seen her live before and its truely a spectical just pure entertainment!! I love Britney and wish her nothing but success and happiness!! Cannot wait for Sunday night!!!

Krys | 3/5/2009, 6:00 pm EST

I’ve seen her live, she’s not as good a singer as I was expecting I’m sorry to say. I was a huge Britney fan at the time too. I admire her for coming out the other side of her dark period but just because I empathise doesn’t mean I think she’s back at the top of her game.

I doubt she’ll ever be the performer she was when she started out and all the money that her record company can throw at the PR and spin of it all isn’t going to make her any better at performing – that has to come from her.

Then I guess so much has changed since she started out. Back in the late 90s pop stars usually had some talent to make it, now all you need is some skinny jeans, big sunglasses and to start a fight in the gossip magazines with another wannabe and you’re a “star”.

Thirsy Owl | 3/5/2009, 9:20 pm EST

why not just go to a strip club? its cheaper and has better music…

Bran | 3/5/2009, 9:46 pm EST

I went to the show opening night and was blown away. It’s extremely entertaining and very much a visual feast. This tour is going to be a big hit with both fans and critics. Welcome back, Britney.

Anonymous | 3/6/2009, 2:17 pm EST

Agree with Thirsy Owl…plus the girl will be a lot better looking.

kbrea13 | 3/6/2009, 2:20 pm EST

I just wonder sometimes if it completely necessary for Britney Spears to constantly be dressing in skimpy outfits. I understand sex sells, but her audience is tons of girls, I doubt they care if she running around in a sequined outfit with titty tassels or a leotard. I am assuming she does all this scandalous and flashy costumes to distract her viewers from her inability to sing; let me rephrase lip-sync.

Wow, I didn’t know that there were other artists touring AS Britney Spears. Watcha smokin’ Countess?

THE TRUTH | 3/6/2009, 5:08 pm EST

Pink Funhouse Tour and Britney’s Circus Tour at the same time is the best thing ever, why? Everyone has access to youtube and when you see their performance side by side …Pink wins hands down. She sings live, dance, flip in the air, make the audience laugh, cry and jump for joy, looks great, commanding stage presence. We need to start a petition to bring Pink back home. I saw her cover of Bohemian Rhapsody on youtube and it was flawless

CB | 3/6/2009, 7:07 pm EST

Went to the ATL show last night…she totally owned the stage (all 3 of them) She was completely overwhelmed by the crowd and although she is out of practice she did a great job. Yes she lip syncs most of the time, and yes her dance moves weren’t as great as they used to be. BUT she kept the entire audience fully entertained the whole time and she’s definitely still got it. If you haven’t got anything nice to say then don’t say it at all. Those of you that are going to a show you’ll have a great time, I agree that she will get even better in time as she does more dates too. Go Britney, we love u!

Bruce Springsteen | 3/6/2009, 8:18 pm EST

Lot of jealous haters! Lot of love. Somewhere in the middle is the truth. The girl works hard and is putting on a great show. Great singers end up in opera/theater – not on pop/rock records. Personalities and charachters make rock & roll – Britney fits the bill. Go Britney! Welcome back!!

katie | 3/7/2009, 12:53 am EST

I went to the Atlanta show last night and was absolutely blown away. Did she lip sing, yes, did it really matter … NO!!! For all the dancing that girl does – I wouldn’t want her to sing. Britney was so humbled when she spoke to the crowd and they did not stop screaming … her face showed it. She is on her way back. That show was the best show I’ve ever seen.

tom | 3/7/2009, 7:55 am EST

It is undeniable that she doesn’t dance anyway like she used to. Compare old videos with the one of the circus tour. The difference is unbelievable. Anyone agree?

Matthew | 3/7/2009, 11:27 am EST

Britney is a performer. She isn’t the most talented singer, but she puts on a show. She commands the stage and cranks out hits like nobody’s business. My mom cannot stand Britney Spears, (She’s more of a die-hard U2 fan, which I can’t blame her for) however when a Britney song comes on in the car (mainly Womanizer) she is always singing along. She can’t believe she does it. Britney makes hits and if you love them or hate them, you still know them.
I will be in attendance at the final US leg of the tour. Hopefully by then Britney will be singing more instead of using a backtrack. Welcome back Britney… you’ve come a long way, but still have miles to go.

wouldyoumind | 3/7/2009, 12:33 pm EST

Love her, hate her, say what you want about her, but I dare you to keep your eyes off her.

Dangtootinpeople | 3/7/2009, 6:25 pm EST

To those complaining about Britney:

There is not anything wrong with Britney’s concerts. Quit giving RS chit about it. Some people love what she does and it doesn’t make them any less muscially intelligent. Britney is not a singer/songwriter she is a performer and public spectacle and she does not claim to be mozart so get over it. As long as people love her and she employs so many people I’d rather not hear your definition of what entertainment should be because that’s up for me to decide not you. hmmf!

Jason | 3/7/2009, 6:52 pm EST

Isn’t it amazing that at 50 Madonna still puts on a way better show, dances and sings live? Saying Britney needs to lip sync the entire thing so she can ”dance” is bullshit, Madonna and Janet Jackson (some of the time) can sing live, Britney should be albe to also.

Miro | 3/7/2009, 8:40 pm EST

Amazing concert from what I can see. I got front row for the Montreal date!

lilia | 3/8/2009, 12:28 am EST

jason
madonna is amazing but she does not sing live! Why do you think she and Elton John got into a big fight after he called her out publiclly about her lip synching after she won best live performance. He and many others were pissed that a lip syncher could be considered live and i don’t blame him.

BRIT'S BITCH | 3/8/2009, 12:27 pm EST

if you can’t accept Britney for who she is, then that is the #1 problem. She is not a good singer and never walks around town claiming she is! She has a cute voice and can sing OK… she is a performer! She is an incredible dancer and ENTERTAINER! She has also been through more crap in the past years to send anybody to the mental house. She is performing in front of everyone, knowing in the back of her mind that people are always criticizing her …. a true DIE HARD FAN will accept her through good, bad, and ugly, you try performing in front of hundreds of people when the spotlights on you, love to see the average joe try!

Anonymous | 3/8/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Second Row seats for New Jersey! I am so excited.. through the past years, I have stayed a true Britney fan and I am so excited she’s back on tour. She’s a fabulous performer and a delightful girl. Good job Brit!

djandy | 3/8/2009, 6:07 pm EST

I guess it depends if you want to see a real singer like Kelly Clarkson who i love or a performer who can dance but not sing. She is a great performer and I do like her music.

Andrea | 3/9/2009, 1:52 am EST

There was absolutely no live singing – just pre-recorded auto-tuned ‘vocals’.

Clayton | 3/9/2009, 2:18 am EST

Why are people so negative when it comes to Britney Spears? I went to her show in Atlanta this past weekend and it was SPECTACULAR! She gives a performance that rivals Janet and Madonna (been to both) and thats why she sells more records. Why can’t people respect that she has busted her ass on broadway and sang live to get a record deal! She is a performer. I don’t buy her albums to say “o is she hitting that note correctly?” NO THATS RIDICULOUS! I buy her albums to dance and sing in the car and cheer up my day as do millions of people thats why she is number one. She is absolutely charming from her dancing, to her facial expressions. The audience at the Atlanta show was amazing by her performance. Listen, music is about emotions. You listen to your favorite artist to change your mood or stabilize a good one. If Britney can do that effectively through the whole brit machine what is wrong with that? She makes people happy!!! I grew up horribly depressed (much better now) and Britney concerts are some of my greatest memories along with just singing to her records. She is an amazing talent and is selling out arenas all around the world. If she was talentless she wouldn’t have more number one’s than all of your favorite artists so all i have to say is if don’t like her music….suck it and don’t waste your time blogging about it…b/c whats sadder than hating britney spears is griping about how much you hate her on blogs. get over it!
Love,
Brits Number One Fan (other than that chris crocker guy…lol)

I went to her show in miami she was great. Her songs were good an her dancing just pulled it off. Go girl go hope you make lots of money the place was packed an everyone was dancing an singing along with her

aldiey | 3/9/2009, 5:22 pm EST

i really like her..but i’m looking for quality of the singer..like beyonce who can shake her ass but keep on singing properly…if she keep doing the lip sync even for the balads song such “everytime” or “out from under” that sad…and if see keep doing this all the time she perform..all fans will leave her…i hope u read my comment britney

Damn, the DC Show sucked. Get the clowns off the freakin’ stage already. Clothing changes took too long, and while i didn;t expect Britney to sing, I did expect her to dance her ass off, which she did NOT. For someone who professes to be a huge fan of Janet Jackson and Madonna, Britney barely danced, and spent most of her time walking around and posing, then dropping down some stupid hatch door. Perez was brilliant, but a let down after that.

The Tomb Raider | 4/4/2009, 12:50 am EST

She keeps on lip-synch all the time… I really can’t see what’s the fun of paying (in this case, paying a lot) to see your favorite singer DO NOT sing.. I still prefer P!nk who has a wonderful voice and does not lip-synch… Oh yeah, and she also makes some acrobatic and amazing stuff…

OBlovergirl | 4/29/2009, 2:16 am EST

I never saw the shows (although I wanted to SO much!) but Britney is an AMAZING performer and on the True Hollywood Story she even said so herself that she’s not that great at singing — but she loves the feeling it gives her. She obviously started out a great singer, so if she is lip-synching, who cares? Let her be, and all of you haters out there are just jealous because she is more talented then you’ll EVER be!!!

LOVE

Eddie :) | 6/7/2009, 5:49 pm EST

Maybe she did lip sinc but the only reason that was done was because she has to move & dance alot & she wants to put on a show & entertain the audience, i know britney pretty well & she just wants ppl to look at her like a regular celebrity, she made this huge circus road tour to be a great huge thing to distract from other things, britney just wants to have fun! cut her some slack ppl brit has been through alot…., but anyways brit i love you & i got your back! lol :) btw its eddie, aprils cousin :) lol

Chris | 6/12/2009, 2:23 am EST

Brit is coming to australia …however I’m more excited to see Beyonce and flo rida tour together. For $180 I get to see the best right now BEYONCE!!! and not somebody who is living in the past of her glory days. Sorry miss spears , but true.

Chris | 6/12/2009, 2:29 am EST

it’s not enough these days to be a good dancer or just a good singer. You have to look sexy, sing well and have all the right moves these days to be a star! Beyonce is smart to not have kids now. To focus on 1 thing first.

Chris | 6/12/2009, 2:31 am EST

I feel sad for the people who pay good money and only get “half” a show.

nicolee! | 6/24/2009, 6:11 pm EST

i went to to concert and she was totally awesome! she danced but not too much and she def wasnt lip syncing! shes great

Necromasty | 8/25/2009, 11:51 pm EST

I can’t believe there are people leaving comments on this blog that are saying that she is not lipsyncing…. It is so painfully obvious that she lipsyncs a large majority of the tour, if not ALL of it in some shows. If you are getting yourself to believe that she is not lipsyncing, you need a SERIOUS reality check.

I saw Brit in NYC last night. Yes I was disappointed she didn’t sing live but I can understand why.. She would have been completely out of breath. As a whole the show was exciting and went by fast! I just wish her mike was at least on! Not once did she chime in and sing not even a word. It would have been cool if she did. I still love her though. She looked good and her performers were unreal!

Didn’t sing and danced poorly. Could’ve made up for it by saying more than a sentence to the crowd. Listening to many young fans after the show, most were disappointed. Britney is cashing in big time. Save your money! Seriously average. I went for free and wouldn’t go again if someone paid me.
