Spinal Tap Rockers Announce “Unwigged & Unplugged” Tour, New Album

They’ve put the wigs in a closet and kept the mini-Stonehenge in storage, but the members of Spinal Tap are back onstage. Not in character as the comical and perpetually washed up metal act, but as themselves: actor-musicians Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, together performing an acoustic “Funky Sex Farm,” adding vocal grunts and heavy breathing between lyrics. “Getting out my pitch fork/ Poking your hay …”

It’s part of a medley of tunes at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, California, on Monday to announce what amounts to a busy year in 2009, with a 30-city “Unwigged & Unplugged” tour beginning April 17th in Vancouver. The trio is also finishing a new Spinal Tap album, combining studio re-recordings of songs from the original film and brand new material.

A quarter-century after the theatrical release of the ultimate rock satire This Is Spinal Tap, the tour will have the trio performing for the first time as themselves, combining music from both that film and the affectionate 2003 folk-music comedy A Mighty Wind.

“We’re doing the trio tour because it’s so easy,” McKean says from stage. “We just have these wooden instruments and we don’t have to wear these things on our heads, unless we’re playing a temple —″

Adds Shearer, “Or a mosque.”

McKean and Guest first started writing songs together in 1967, and the three of them began playing as a unit in 1978. They do plan on some special live appearances later this year as Spinal Tap in full, wigged regalia, the first since their epic appearance at 2007’s Live Earth in London.

Upstairs after their press conference, Guest, McKean and Shearer talked to Rolling Stone. Follow this link to the full hilarious Q&A. And keep reading for the tour dates:

This is NOT Spinal Tap !!

Music_Man | 3/3/2009, 12:53 pm EST

And you can’t figure out what’s wrong with the music industry these days.

zappafrank | 3/3/2009, 1:36 pm EST

This will be awesome. All three of these guys have TONS of musical talent. And they’re funny as hell.

Swingline | 3/3/2009, 1:39 pm EST

Go rent the fucking movie if you guys are hard-pressed to see them sporting foil-wrapped cucumbers in their pants and fake mullets.
These guys have been “in-character” for many movies that have generated even more laughs, so why the hell not give the individuals a brief moment in the spotlight as just themselves?

nik | 3/3/2009, 1:54 pm EST

no shows in minnesota?! WTF?!?

Jamey | 3/3/2009, 2:18 pm EST

This tasteless tour is a good indication of the lack of musical invention within. The musical growth of this band cannot even be charted. They are treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and bad poetry

Snark Jetson | 3/3/2009, 2:36 pm EST

The Boston show got cancelled. But that’s OK – It’s not a big college town.

The Seeker | 3/3/2009, 3:39 pm EST

They’re playing Houston when I’m in Boston, and Boston when I’m in Houston! This is terrible!

Jungleland2 | 3/3/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Can’t wait for Jazz Odessey Unplugged!or maybe some of the songs from Saucy Jack?

Rock n' Roll Cleveland!! | 3/3/2009, 4:08 pm EST

I like the idea of the unwigged multi musical review. Sure worlds will collide when Tap meets the Folksmen……and the music industry will either be set back 2 generations or launched in a whole new direction. Hopefully we won’t hear any “barber shop reggae” on tour.

dan | 3/3/2009, 5:29 pm EST

this makes me so mad they are not coming to minnesota!

Anonymous | 3/3/2009, 6:13 pm EST

Well of course they’re playing Columbus! Because I’ll be on my honeymoon! Dammit!

lenny | 3/3/2009, 9:06 pm EST

will lenny and the squigtones be the opening act?

Nathan | 3/4/2009, 2:33 pm EST

Growing up, I remember waking up and putting the “Smell the Glove” vinyl on the turntable and turning it up to 11 and getting lost in the music

DORF | 3/4/2009, 6:57 pm EST

Maybe they’ll finally play Lick My Love Pump in its entirety.

christine | 3/6/2009, 1:10 am EST

chuna | 3/6/2009, 3:55 pm EST

I might care if I was not so heavily sedated

Brob | 3/11/2009, 10:08 pm EST

Read the list. They are paying PDX, right after they play Seattle.

Josey Wales | 3/15/2009, 11:22 pm EST

Playing in Oakland on a Wednesday. I work weeknights. I won tickets from KFOX.
They will probably never come around again.
Great.
Where’s my Parachutes when I need them?

Smell the glove | 7/31/2009, 1:12 pm EST

Why no Montreal date!!!!!!

Miss11 | 10/22/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Well, what happened on January 20th was not some coup, was not the successful conclusion of a war of liberation. ,
