Evidently, Oklahoma has spent the past two years working on a very important legislative matter: the nomination and confirmation of the Flaming Lips‘ “Do You Realize??” as the state’s official rock song. According to a press release from the Oklahoma Historical Society, the state’s legislature voted to affirm the track’s importance, putting Wayne Coyne and Co. in the history books for real as part of Senate Joint Resolution 24.

The 2002 track from Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots beat out some stiff competition: the 10 finalists that were “representative of the pervasive influence of Oklahoma and Oklahomans on the development of rock & roll” included “Let’s Have a Party” by Wanda Jackson (1958); “Walk Don’t Run” by The Venture (1960); “Endless Oklahoma Sky” by John Moreland and the Black Gold Band (2008); “Home Sweet Oklahoma” by Leon Russell (1971); “Move Along” by the All-American Rejects (2005); “Never Been to Spain” written by Hoyt Axton (1971); “Oklahoma” by The Call (1986); “Heartbreak Hotel” written by Mae Boren Axton (1956); and “After Midnight” by J.J. Cale (1965).

An official Official Oklahoma Rock Song Advisory Panel was convened in 2007 to recognize the role the state has played in rock history and after the nominations were gathered in 2008 (2,498 were submitted for 458 different tunes) and narrowed down to 10 by the panel, the public voted on the Website oklahomarocksong.org. When the 21,061 votes were counted, the Lips were on top. In case you were wondering, voters submitted comments, too, which include “The beauty in the message of ‘Do You Realize??’ perfectly suits the beautiful state of Oklahoma.”

What a bunch of hillbilly rednecks. You could have had a real rock song by the likes of one of these stars: “Let’s Have a Party” by Wanda Jackson (1958); “Walk Don’t Run” by The Venture (1960); “Endless Oklahoma Sky” by John Moreland and the Black Gold Band (2008); “Home Sweet Oklahoma” by Leon Russell (1971); “Move Along” by the All-American Rejects (2005); “Never Been to Spain” written by Hoyt Axton (1971); “Oklahoma” by The Call (1986); “Heartbreak Hotel” written by Mae Boren Axton (1956); and “After Midnight” by J.J. Cale (1965) but you picked a bunch of unknown retards, you people are nothing more than the inbred offspring of hillbilly idiots. No wonder your the only state that gave mcCain his biggest win and the only state to give Wesley Clark a win in his election bid, what a bunch of freaking loosers.

I like how the commenter above simply cut-and-pasted the other songs from the article. Obviously, the people have spoken, and the Lips are it. Keep your ignorant comments to yourself and have some respect for one of the most original and innovative bands around today. (seriously, who hates on the Lips?)

Rock-on Wayne, Steven, Michael, and Cliff!

Not everyone in Oklahoma are rednecks believe it or not and The Flaming Lips are a great band to represent the diversity that is growing in Oklahoma. Don’t make comments about things you don’t know.

who the hell is this dude at the bottom here talking shit. i grew up in oklahoma and was amazed the first time i seen the lips back in 1996. been jamming since then and will continue jamming the flaming lips.

I think one of the best reasons to have chosen the Lips for the official rock song of Oklahoma is all that they give back to Oklahoma. Despite their fame, they still live in Oklahoma and support Oklahoma artists, musicians, and local events. I believe it acknowledges the current face of Oklahoma and the progressive attitude of the extensive and growing music scene in Oklahoma, not to mention that they did win a few Grammys. J Stas, you obviously have not ever been to Oklahoma and know very little about The Flaming Lips and their long musical history. Congratulations on sounding like an idiot.

J Stas; even a hillbilly redneck like me can spell losers.
I think it says a lot about my favorite state that we can vote for a song by these beautiful freaks. I love these guys and it is a tribute to us that Wayne has never left Oklahoma City to try and make it somewhere else. Actually, I doubt that he would have made this music anywhere else!

J Stas speaks from ignorance. Okla didn’t vote for McCain. We’re just that opposed to Socialism (which, for those infected with uberliberalismspeak, is NOT code for racism but for… just what Obummer has been doing as President so far, actually. Less than two months in office and ALREADY Worst. President. Ever!

Unknown retards, huh? At least we know how to spell “losers” correctly and which version of “you’re/your” to use.

The main point is that Oklahoma has a wonderful musical tradition, full of variety and heart – a point that is lost on the uneducated masses who still think all Okies are hillbilly idiots who drive wagons and live in tepees.

The Lips rock, whether they are playing music festivals, showing Coldplay around the state in an old truck or making gloriously weird movies. I can’t think of a better band and song to represent Oklahoma.

Great choice. I live in British Columbia with thousands of great bands but this morning when I was trying to come up with a local song as great as Do You Realize? I was stumped.

Jay D'Lay | 3/5/2009, 7:09 pm EST

Great choice Oklahoma! For those not in the know…here are the inspirational lyrics that won them the prize!

———————- ——
Do You Realize – that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize – we’re floating in space -
Do You Realize – that happiness makes you cry
Do You Realize – that everyone you know someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes – let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It’s hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn’t go down
It’s just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize – Oh – Oh – Oh
Do You Realize – that everyone you know
Someday will die -

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes – let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It’s hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn’t go down
It’s just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize – that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize

J Stas-
I am neither a hillbilly nor a loser. I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I voted for Obama. Your stereotypes are as hollow as your head. I voted for the lips because to me and few other million people they aren’t unknown retards. From the looks of it there is only one unknown retard here that thinks they are.

Hugo Fugursev | 4/27/2009, 10:46 pm EST

J Stas: read my name over and over; you’ll get the message sooner or later.

Mister | 4/29/2009, 4:40 am EST

J stas have you even listened to the flaming lips? Because surely you would know that songs like “Pilot Can at the Queer of God” or “Jesus Shooting Heroin” or hell even “Do You Realize??” sound nothing like the old mind numbing standards of Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, Joe Diffie. Christ the only thing that could replace this
song would be a Woody Guthrie song but he isn’t technically rock because there was no such thing as rock in his day. And to thank you for wasting my time I an Oklahoman born and raised would like to say FUCK JOHN MCAIN and fuck you guy somewhere within this realm of existence.

Smackery | 5/4/2009, 10:52 pm EST

tulsa rocks and so do the flaming lips. if you don’t know anything about the lips, then watch fearless freaks. if you think tulsa is a flat hillbilly city, your mistaken. i have lived all over america and tulsa is not a bad place. it’s quite a little rock and roll town. this is why spin magazine was smart enough to do a 2 page spread on the music scene here last year. congrats to the lips. they deserve it. :-)

curious | 11/8/2009, 11:39 am EST

What’s inspirational about this?

Do You Realize – that happiness makes you cry
Do You Realize – that everyone you know someday will die
