Auto Tune isn’t a ’sound’ and anybody who believes that is a tool. It’s simply represents a lack of talent being marketed as a ’sound’ because the artist can’t actually sing. It’s only a ’sound’ if the artist has talent to begin with. I hate Cher but her use of Auto Tune was a ’sound’ because she can actually sing on key (as attrocious as the songs are). It’s so hard to find anything real anymore; it’s either a computer singing to me or a manufactured choreographed pop/rock/hiphop artist telling me how unique they are. I literally have to work my ass of to seek out anything with any kind of soul because radio, tv and even rolling stone don’t have a clue anymore. And no I don’t think that ‘real’ means weird trippy alterna-art music. I mean everything; rock, hip hop, roots etc. There is so much radio-friendly stuff that would have been huge fifteen years ago but because the artist is old (old being over 25 these days) or doesn’t have a mullet wielding famous father or look like a model then nobody pays attention. I hope the music industry goes the way of the auto industry only with no bailout. Let it burn.

StrummerJones, you made some good points but I hardly think that either Joe Strummer or Mick Jones would agree with you. Whether artists decide to use auto tune or not is their decision. Personally, I think it undermines the true talent of good singers (or not so good; Johnny Rotten and Frank Black can’t actually sing at all but that’s the beauty of it). It’s also extremely annoying. Rap itself doesn’t suck. It has its own merits just like rock. Run DMC, the Beastie Boys, and Beck are all great as well as other rap. Lil Wayne however, sucks.

Mainstream = marketing. Some mainstream music is genuinely great music and much of it is crap music. What they have in common is that they are both marketed fantastically well. People don’t buy Jonas Brothers stuff because the Jonas Brothers write classic songs, they buy Jonas Brothers because they are 14 years old and they saw them on a Magazine or heard their song on a TV show. Some bands, like the Fray, put a record out, tour it and gain a legitimate fan base. They become mainstream when the song is put on Grey’s Anatomy. It all comes down to a simple fact that people will buy whatever you convince them to buy. VERY few people are actual music fans in the sense that they listen to everything and decide for themselves which one they genuinely love. Lil Wayne won’t sell because he’s written the Joshua Tree…he’ll sell because somebody has put his song on a Ring Tune in “The Hills” and all the 14 year olds will want that Ring Tune. All the music industry is now is conditioning 15 year olds to buy whatever they want them to buy by product placement and making sure that every new artist is also a teenager or very close to it. The days of vigourously promoting a legitimate new artist over 25 because of his or her art are over.
