Woodstock ‘09 In the Works To Celebrate 40th Anniversary of 1969 Festival

With the 40th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival coming this August, organizers are hoping to honor the famed musical event with a pair of free two-day concerts taking place in both New York and Berlin, Germany, TheRockRadio.com reports. The site cites a press release in which promoter Michael Lang says he hopes the New York festival will take place exactly on the 40th anniversary, August 15-16th, while the Berlin event will go down August 22-23rd at an abandoned airport. The exact location for the U.S. festival has not been determined, and Lang tells RS he hasn’t confirmed dates for either event to anyone. “We’re exploring several options. But nothing is confirmed,” Lang tells Rolling Stone of all plans for the events, which he is now categorizing as “rumors.”

According to TheRockRadio, no bands have yet been named for either festival, but organizers reportedly hope to recruit some of the acts that played the original fest in 1969, namely the Who, Santana, the Grateful Dead and many more. The official Woodstock Website offers no details as it’s currently “under construction.” Lang is credited as a co-creator of the original Woodstock, showing up numerous times in the documentary about the festival. He also played a role in producing both the Woodstock ‘94 and the Woodstock ‘99 festivals.

Woodstock ‘09, if it comes to be, would be the first big festival under the Woodstock moniker since the ‘99 weekend. That three-day event became more infamous for its unruly crowds than the actual music and helped negate the whole “peace & love” spirit of the original festival thanks to a weekend’s worth of violence and looting. Artists like Insane Clown Posse, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit were accused of inciting the crowd, leading to bonfires and melee in what in retrospect is regarded as a disaster.

Sounds pretty cool. I really hope the grateful dead reform properly at some point. They had joan baez, sly and the family stone, joe cocker and sha na na at the original too so they should have them at the 40th anniversary. I think some bands/artists that declined their offers to play at the original should get involved in this one.
Bob Dylan
Led-Zeppelin
Beatles(o bviously just paul mccartney singing psychadelic beatles tracks)
Jefferson Airplane
Plus some 60’s acts that are currently rocking Woodstock style.
Steppenwolf
Jethro Tull
the Animals
Jeff Beck
David Gilmour(singing pink floyd)
Cream
Deep Purple
Yeah that would be cool. No young guys like those fucked up 90’s versions of woodstock.

Peace man.

jase | 3/2/2009, 5:22 pm EST

LOL, peace and love do not exist in a terror driven world. How can you blame a band who played a Hendrix classic “FIRE”.

CR1ZZ | 3/2/2009, 5:24 pm EST

Why did my comment get deleted?

CR1ZZ | 3/2/2009, 5:26 pm EST

Oh it’s ok. It’s back now. I just thought of another act to add.
FLEETWOOD MAC. With Linsey, Stevie, John, Christine and the man himself Mic Fleetwood. They should’ve been at the original concert man.

locked down | 3/2/2009, 6:13 pm EST

After the ‘99 event, this year’s police presence will be hardcore

eightball | 3/2/2009, 7:41 pm EST

it should be a festival of classic bands. no shitty bands like the 99 festival.

Anonymous | 3/2/2009, 8:59 pm EST

CR1ZZ,

You do realize that the original Woodstock was in 1969. That particular lineup of Fleetwood Mac did not exist yet.

Ghostofike | 3/2/2009, 9:00 pm EST

Pepsi still has the rights to this show. Some of the acts that they are going after are Brittany Spears, Rhianna, and lady ugo or whatever the fuck he name is. There will be a vip ticket that will land you your own porta john and naked midget with no teeth and a flat head. See ya there

CR1ZZ | 3/2/2009, 9:04 pm EST

Yes I know that. I’m saying that they’re type of music and stage show would of fit in perfectly. IF they existed. But good to see some people still know these things.

Francisco | 3/2/2009, 9:15 pm EST

whats the point?. There are much better festivals now a days like coachella, glastonbury, etc…

They should celebrate the aniversary with a reissue of the Woodstock 69 movie with a cool version filled with unrealeased footage on DVD. Im sure there’s a lot of cool stuff in the vaults from the original concert.

The ‘94 and ‘99 festivals proved why this is a bad idea. The ‘69 festival is the only true festival and its stands as a moment in time that cannot be repeated by Lang’s attempts to make more money.

It’s time to move on. Honor the original Woodstock but not with another corporate- crap – band fest.

cheers.

Jager | 3/2/2009, 10:04 pm EST

Soo…we’re at the 40th anniversary now. What a bunch of self absorbed, myopic douche bags baby boomers are. While the most of you are patting yourself for the “anniversary” of one thing or another every 5-10 years, here’s a thought: How many anniversaries have been held for V – E Day? Or V – J Day? Or do any of you even know what those days are? Pathetic.

Dan | 3/2/2009, 10:36 pm EST

PEARL JAM!

CR1ZZ | 3/2/2009, 10:43 pm EST

Hay Jagar I’m 14 fucking years old. I aint a baby boomer. I celebrate woodstock because some of the best artists that ever existed performed there. If they included the artists on my list it would be THE best concert ever. Pearl Jam could open. Lol

CR1ZZ | 3/2/2009, 10:49 pm EST

I can’t believe more people are commenting on this. I would like have a heart attack if I could go to this.

evan | 3/3/2009, 12:29 am EST

it’s pretty lame to hear people under the age of 60 getting a hard on about the prospect of the who, santana etc. playing. Who wants to see a bunch of old men play just because they were good 40 years ago? bring on the new talents or else its not worth a crap.

Jimi | 3/3/2009, 12:35 am EST

I think that the bands chosen to be at these festivals should be in line with what the original was designed to promote. Bands like 311, Pearl Jam, P.O.D. and Shinedown fit perfectly. Of course, it also makes sense to have as many of the original bands as will do it. The riot inciting bands of the past Woodstocks don’t belong. To the fans who will attend – please respect eachother and make peace this time instead of making this country look like a giant red white and blue asshole!

CR1ZZ | 3/3/2009, 12:44 am EST

To Evan
Wtf. Everyone I know loves these musicians because their talent is GENUINE. Unlike the metro station/soulja boy shit. We listen to some other new bands now also. But ones that have talent. But the most talented are the ones from 30/40 years ago and are just as good now. So I’ll be happy to send you a voucher for a Jonas Brothers t-shirt you douche-bag.
Enjoy.

Willydog | 3/3/2009, 5:50 am EST

I went to the original Woodstock festival when I was 17. I would love to go to the 40th Anniversary Celebration, but I know a bunch of you shit-for-brains dumb-ass punks will fuck it up! Here’s an idea: No one under 50 years old allowed!

ED | 3/3/2009, 7:26 am EST

Chrizz, waht a great idea. The Dead would close, becuase there;s really nothing out there that’s even close. hERE’S the festival schedule, play in alphabetical order for two days: BLIND FAITH [Cream sounded like they were on sopers during that reunion], JETHRO TULL , the Animals, Hot Tuna [J Airplane is disqualified becuase of J Starship], Commander Cody and LPA, David Bromberg, Dead, Steppenwolf, Allman Bros.
No corporate sponsorship….

cory | 3/3/2009, 9:42 am EST

I’m stationed in Germany right now and holy shit i hope this Woodstock is amazing!

Edz | 3/3/2009, 9:47 am EST

Wiilydog

I guess the saying now is “never trust anyone under 30.”

J.w | 3/3/2009, 9:47 am EST

Why have Paul singing all the Beatles songs if Ringo isn’t there?
He’s still alive to you know.
And no Pearl Jam, you know you couldn’t get Eddie Vedder to play that show because he is so self absorbed.
Woodstock was about Love & Peace.
So why have new bands that aren’t even promoting psychedelic type
music play there?
Makes no sense to me.
Keep the old bands, they’ve got the real talent.

J.w | 3/3/2009, 9:49 am EST

I also meant to add..
you can’t have the Beatles play because
without John OR George, it’s simply not the Beatles.

to J.W. | 3/3/2009, 10:31 am EST

Eddie Vedder is self absorbed, huh? You obviously have no knowledge of the subject. Give an example of how he is.

Josh | 3/3/2009, 11:23 am EST

Jw, you’re officially the idiot of the day for the “Eddie Vedder” comment considering how many god damn festivals they’ve played in their time! Do your homework before you say stupid shit, okay?

artificialred | 3/3/2009, 12:13 pm EST

They need to give up the idea of these things altogether. No one wants to see all those old shitty bands!!Fleetwood Mac???? A Led Zep or Pink Floyd reunion would be about the only way the thing would matter anyway, and those things are not going to happen. If they do pull it off, it will be nothing a but a cash grab and fashion show!!!

matt | 3/3/2009, 12:17 pm EST

To the post that asked for “no sponsors”. Good luck with that. These shows don’t happen without sponsors. The 60’s ideal of ‘not selling out’ is dead and gone. Record labels were the original sponsors, and now corporate sponsors hold the key for us to hear and see artists.

RememberWoodstock 1969: Yasgur | 3/3/2009, 12:23 pm EST

and celebrate it for what it was. If you are a baby boomer and you have children and now grandchildren, pass down the message of 3 days of peace and music that were hosted by my cousin Max Yasgur, the dairy farmer on whose 600 acres Woodstock took place. Read my children’s picture book to your kids and grandkids and keep it on your coffee table. it is that good and simple. read more about it and celebrate 3 days of peace and music and the farmer who allowed it to happen- he listed to kids with big ideas and let a whole geneeration of flower children in:

Wilco, Kings of Leon, Radiohead, The Black Keys/Dan Auerbach, The Mars Volta, MGMT, Rage Against The Machine, Pearl Jam, Jenny Lewis, The Roots, Bob Dylan, TV On the Radio, Grizzly Bear, The Beastie Boys, The Raconteurs/White Stripes, Ween, Tool, Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band, Jane’s Addiction, Neil Young, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tenacious D…..

Now that would be the best Woodstock since ‘69…possibly even better. But no, our generation listens to MTV-inspired shit… It’s going to be disappointing.

The Ghost Of Jimi Hendrix | 3/3/2009, 12:49 pm EST

The best thing to do would be to set fire to an entire stage full of musical equipment: guitars, drums, amps, mics, etc. Then, the audience could all come up on stage, take their clothes off, defecate and pee-pee on each other, and have one gigantic poop-throwing extravaganza. Paradise on earth.

Do it.

Bascomb | 3/3/2009, 1:25 pm EST

The concert is free but with service charges tickets will cost $150.

realist | 3/3/2009, 1:28 pm EST

Michael Lang is a crook and a fraud. He screwed Saugerties NY in 1994 and Rome NY in 1999. That’s why he has to go to Germany for this show; a typical con man staying one step ahead of the law. The last I heard, Live Nation had the rights for the new amphitheater on the original site so he’s blowing smoke regarding that venue.

Tom | 3/3/2009, 2:05 pm EST

I think that this would be awesome!!! but people who are there to fuck it all up should be arrested FREE CONCERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CR1ZZ | 3/3/2009, 4:16 pm EST

I agree nothing could recreate the real concert and I agree no people who want to cause trouble. Last timew this type of concert was held they had Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Limp Bizkit sort of people. What were they thinking. You need the old guys because they used to bring the real sense of peace. Not the bloody audience. And not all people my age are evil satanic terrorists. I live in New Zealand. One of the most peaceful places in existance. I would’nt go to a concert that was remembering woodstock unless it had a lineup full of legendary 60’s bands. And I think everyone who attended the original would’nt either. And Ghostfike you’re brilliant man.
We can’t avoid sponsers or anything like that, thats just the way the world is. But trouble all depends on the music and the way it’s set up.
Max Yasgur would have sued if he saw those monstrosities in the 90’s. Make him proud with this one.
Peace

CR1ZZ | 3/3/2009, 4:34 pm EST

Oh and if there’s room on the bill
Neil Young
Crosby,Stills and Nash
Creedance Clearwater Revival
Bob Segar & the silver bullet band
and the Kinks would make a good edition. But I think I’m asking too much. But then again so did the original music festivals. An audience of 600,000 showed up at the Isle of White festival. I’m sure we could beat that.

Stevo | 3/3/2009, 5:11 pm EST

This will hopefully cue the world’s greatest live rock band Pearl Jam to headline the event!

KJ | 3/3/2009, 7:41 pm EST

FYI, Pearl Jam concerts are never sponsored, though the festivals they play are. PJ would ROCK OUT!! and this 50 year old hippie chick would be happy to see a mix of old and new bands play as long as the “Peace & Love” message is prevalent. I’m way past my mosh pit days!

Fleetwood Mac 1969 | 3/3/2009, 9:35 pm EST

CR1ZZ, that lineup for Fleetwood Mac didn’t exist in 1969, man..”Oh Well”;)…Hey Jager…your comment says more about you than it does anyone else (in other words don’t ask me what I think of you I might not give the answer that you want me to”….oh well…).

Willydog | 3/3/2009, 10:28 pm EST

Here’s my wish list:
The Dead
Joan Baez
CSNY
John Fogerty
Richie Havens
Arlo Guthrie
John Sebastian
Levon Helm Band
Melanie
Santana
Jeffer son Starship
Country Joe McDonald
and just for good measure…
The Allman Brothers Band
Bob Dylan
and no one under 50 years old!

CR1ZZ | 3/4/2009, 5:34 am EST

Hay willydog I was’nt one of the people who fucked up last time and I’m 14. And there are pleanty of people over the age of 30 who would be responsible. Love all other artists on the list though. Those artists would bring peace. Not the red hot chilli peppers. And I did’nt know ritchie havens was still alive. It’s good to hear he is’nt.

Jerome John | 3/4/2009, 10:54 am EST

It’s really a shame what the corporate world did to such a momentous piece of counter culture history. Woodstock ‘69 was about peace, love, harmony, and music. It was family event. The “Woodstock” events in the ’90s were to make a buck and we all know it. A true tribute to the Real Woodstock would be The Dead headlining and no artists that would not otherwise play with The Dead!

Alen Turajlic | 3/4/2009, 11:24 am EST

Of course the lineup is gonna suck so much. Fuck limp bizkit. Fuck all the Mainstream rock bands you have for the lineup. ugh im so mad.

oh man bands to play if it happened again would have to be.
Lemon Jelly, Tea Leaf Green, Lotus, STS9, The Allman Brothers (for sure), Railroad Earth, Widespread, Panic, B-Tribe, Keller Williams, Moe, The String Cheese Incident ,Yonder Mountain String Boys , PERPETUAL GROOVE, Hot buttered Rum string band,Del McCoury, A.L.O.
Todd Hannigan
Hot Tuna
Matt Costa
Jack Johnson
so many more
but it mostly looks like its Feel Good Music that makes everyone enjoy the surroundings, nature, fall in love and dance

White Rabbit | 3/4/2009, 11:45 am EST

Woodstock is a legand a real Classic, sticking to the Original’s the 1’s still alive that is is only way to go making it another Legand we will live to remember!

Andrew | 3/4/2009, 4:21 pm EST

How about Crosby Stills Nash & Young?

CR1ZZ | 3/4/2009, 5:44 pm EST

I meant is’nt dead. So so so sooooooo sorry. And andrew I already suggested that. I can’t see why more New Zealanders are’nt interested in this. Someone needs to slap the guy who’s putting this event on in the face and explain to him why the lineup needs to be more 60’s. Pleeease

Nutsa Tkabladze | 3/6/2009, 7:39 am EST

I’s so sad cause I’ll be in NY in May not in August :( :( those who go, enjoy!

Awesome | 3/6/2009, 2:23 pm EST

I think the bands that perform in the 09 Woodstock should be 50% 60s bands and 50% modern bands. That way we get new young talent from today performing for the younger people and legendary rock artists from the 60s performing for everyone!

Cheesecrop | 3/8/2009, 12:22 pm EST

Somebody nneds to set the record stright about all this starry eyed hippie bunk. Have you never seen a TV show where someone shows off their ticket to the 69 Woodstock? Good. Now just how do you think they acquired said ticket? Correct. They purchased it… with money… they spent $ to buy a ticket and gain entrance to a show. And when you think about it, that’s kind of like the 94 & 99 ones as well.

Apologies for the reality check.

TahjBear | 3/8/2009, 3:03 pm EST

I think the best line up would be, and Im dreaming here,
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Lynard Skynard
Neil Young
CCR or John Fogerty
U2
and the Greatful Dead!!!!!!!

TahjBear | 3/8/2009, 3:47 pm EST

To add to my dream list I forgot one
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

Cheesecrop | 3/8/2009, 6:46 pm EST

Now that I look at what has been written about the 99 melee, I see it is being pinned mostly on the bands. While they share some of the blame, let’s not forget the ridiculous prices for food & drink, as well as merchandise, that helped to bring about some ill feelings around the festival grounds.

Peace & love only go so far, especially when it’s 90+ degrees & bottled water alone is clearing 5.00 a shot.

lisa | 3/8/2009, 8:19 pm EST

2 words. fleetwood. mac.

CR1ZZ | 3/8/2009, 10:26 pm EST

Tahjbear you have a good lineup. I thought of tom petty and U2 but I thought there music was a bit far from the woodstock scene. And when I said David Gilmour I meant pink floyd songs. And the majority, actually I think entirety now, of Lynard Skynard are deceased, (may rest in peace).
You aint dreamin, neither is anyone with that type of lineup. Just need more people behind it and with the same opinion on music

CR1ZZ | 3/8/2009, 10:33 pm EST

I’m watching the DVD of woodstock 1969 right now. Richie Havens is playing. He’s singing a song about freedom and the audience of 450000 is clapping along because they believed in the what they were there for. We need more of that.

Dead Jake | 3/9/2009, 3:46 pm EST

Fuck Pearl Jam, and fuck chuck t. Make Woodstock 09 a tribute to the music that defined this country in its most interesting time.
SOMETIMES THE SONGS WE HEAR ARE JUST SONGS OF OUR OWN.

TahjBear | 3/10/2009, 2:43 pm EST

I just figured U2 because of all their humanitarian work and how they’ve (along with many others of course)managed to shine a spotlight on the insane mistreatment and outright injustice of the way people are being treated in the world. I did kinda think tho that perhaps there stage theatrics might be a bit too much for a 40th Anniversary of Woodstock, but we always got the soul of accoustic sounds going for us, maybe they could do a toned down bit ya know!

Cheesecrop | 3/10/2009, 7:44 pm EST

With the economic situation we have now, just who’s gonna pay for this?

No offense here, but out of the three that did take place already, only the 94 one took place when there was even the slightest hint of above average economic distress (the leftovers of the 91 recession), and even that was fading away little by little. Who will be able to afford a ticket, even if they go on sale in another month or two?

If there happens to be a fortieth at the original site, lets show the world that the ideals of the sixties generation were not in vain. Moonshined Muskrat | 3/27/2009, 3:45 am EST

I went to the 30th anniversary of woodstock in 1999. However it was not the ill-fated one we all hear about in the public it was a Yasgur’s farm in August. The line-up was Country Joe & the Fish, Melanie, David Crosby, Rick Danko/Garth Hudson of the Band, Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, Mountain (minus Felix P.), and Johnny Winter. I was there for three days and had a hell of a time. I’m not sure why I don’t see anything about this on the internet or what it was actually promoted as. I know I was in another world at times but for Pete’s sake I was there in my old jeep with two girls and a dog. Also if you guys who like chill festivals and don’t want a bunch of knuckleheads don’t mind travelin’ then here in Alaska we have some pretty cool old time and bluegrass festivals. Really good beer up here.

Not 2 be a jerk or n e thing but let’s look at the facts here people… 40 years later we have rock n roll, alternative, and heavy metal! Even crazyier 10 years after woodstock 99 society has got less “love n peace like”. Times have changed and so has music.. but let’s keep n mind that even though moshing and headbanging music is at its peek right now… I’m sure people from 69 thru 09 can come together to send out the same message when this masterpiece was put 2gether!! Or can we??? All I know is I would like 2 see some of my favorite bands perform when that stage is set.. but I would luv 2 see sum of the bands that started it all too!! So 2 me its a win win situation. But that’s just me ;^)

Stop Hating | 4/2/2009, 10:55 am EST

The Woodstock’s of the 90’s were suppose to represent a new generation of music, and show how those bands who performed were representative of the culture of music of that time. The bands who performed were addressing the issues of the time. They were a part of the music culture of the mid-and-late 90’s. The point of the first festival was for bands to come together and rep. peace and love. A notion of anti-war. Well during the anniversary festivals there weren’t any majors wars happening that contained the US, so instead social issues were being addressed. The 99 Woodstock had to represent something – be it people’s rebellion against the man. The prices of everything, and the corporate sponsorship versus the young people of the USA who wanted to enjoy a festival of music. The crowds reaction to the music was compariable to that of the original Woodstock. A group of people who were all there with the same thoughts. Bringing back safe acts, and bands of the past does not represent what Woodstock really is. People need to stop taking such an elitist point of view when it comes to Woodstock. No one band, or form of music is actually better then another. It is a reality that we allow other people to dictate to us; as well as, our own tastes. Maybe there just shouldn’t be anymore Woodstock’s. Have another festival with all of the music from the past. Nothing will truly represent the original, and nor should it. The original was a representation of the times. We need to have a festival of OUR times. Not of times of the past. Come on people stope hating, start thinking.

um in response to the first post, from “stop hating” … i find it very difficult to believe that drunk kids moshing and rioting, committing a sexual assault per every beer they drink is some sort of political statement or projection of stored animosity towards “corporate institutions” or hatred towards “the man” … your problem is with elitism yet somehow you sit idly on your pedestal justifying the actions of drunken assholes.. do us all a favor, next time you want to tell us all to “stop hating” or “be cool maaan” tell it to one of the girls who had their tits ripped out during the shows by some “rebellious young activist” that it’s okay because the government made us do it….

get bent nerd

Woodstock 2009 should happen, as many of the original artists should be included, the sponsors should be eco and spirit friendly. It should be a beacon for the true meaning of Peace and Humanity. The majority of the youth today are angry and lost because they do not have the brotherhood that the coolest generation of youth in the 60s invented. I was at the 1998 event and it was a breath of fresh air. I think Michael Lang and company can pull it off and prove they were right. Give Peace a Chance.

gabby hussein hayes | 4/25/2009, 7:45 pm EST

we had a very nice reunion festival with many of the original acts in 1999 at the woodstock site on yasgur’s farm. the police presence was a little heavy and the crowd a little thin, but the music was amazing and I’ll never forget it. Some kids came after the disaster in Troy’s Woodstock 99, behaved horribly, were kicked out and never heard from again. But don’t think the 30th (or the 29th either–that was a great reunion too) was forgotten. I hope that the people of Bethel will let the Yasgur’s farm people stage a concert, however small, on the beautiful natural amphitheater of Mr. Yasgur’s pasture overlooking Woodstock lake.

heinz | 4/27/2009, 4:41 pm EST

whats up with you guys and getting pissed off about the music? i mean yeah, fallout boy and metro station suck, but really? you guys are all about keeping the ’stock spirit, but talking about starting riots? wheres the “peace and love”? cmon guys, its all about the music. grow up.

Anon | 4/27/2009, 7:33 pm EST

It really makes me sad that you guys think that “peace and love” in this world is gone. It makes me even sadder that you people think that none of the newer bands don’t promote the “peace and love” feeling and don’t sell out. Have you people ever looked local? I recently read my school newspaper and found out about 6 local bands from Grand Rapids, that promote themselves, by themselves. And what about Phish? Or Slightly Stoopid? Or Maps & Atlases? or mewithoutyou? Or Old Canes? Cmon you guys! Peace and Love are always going to be around. If you think it was only the 60’s that had this thought, you’re wrong. I agree, that the older music is by far some of the best. I love all of it. But you guys need to give the newer bands a chance. Quit thinking that the music you listened to 40 years ago is the only music that should be allowed in this world.

Anonymous | 4/28/2009, 10:54 am EST

yesss!!! woodstock!

aaron | 5/3/2009, 12:03 pm EST

yes to woodstock, but please, no u2, the vibe isn’t there. yes john fogerty, i saw him recently, it was better than ccr. the whole point of a reunion is to enjoy the same music, the same vibe. you wouldn’t have a beatles reunion and have sgt bono and the red hot chili peppers instead of mccartney and ringo. a woodstock reunion should be just that. let the more recent artists have their own concert somewhere else at another time, and let anyone who has managed to stay alive since the 60s and still sounds good PLAY. the music will dictate the scene, and attract the right crowd, and it will be a stronger show for it.

Emily | 5/9/2009, 2:14 pm EST

I am only 13 years old, and have never experienced anything like Woodstock.

I watch the movie about once a day, and live to see the real thing.

I think we’re closer now than ever to be able to re-create an original, or close to the original, Woodstock.

There’s a poster in my LA teacher’s room that says “You’ll always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”, and I think it applies to this.

Sure, the ‘99 Woodstock could’ve been better, but what’s the point in not trying again?

I agree, The Who, Grateful Dead, and Santana should play. I also think Canned Heat, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe, Joe Cocker, and maybe some tribute bands should play. Joan Baez, Sly, and Sha-Na-Na would be cool, too.

I just think my generation needs to believe that there’s peace and hope left in the world, and I think another Woodstock would help to open our eyes.

So please, for the people of the Woodstock generation who are living to see another, and the people younger and my age who dream to see Woodstock live up to it’s roots, Woodstock is needed, and SOON.

LOVE LIVE WOODSTOCK.
VIVA WOODSTOCK!

From the amount of people that really want to make woodstock happen again, it really proves how much good it did and that there still ARE people out there that believe in free and real happiness. “Peace and Love” wasn’t just a phase or phrase, it’s something that really [can] exist.

I say, we stop trying to duplicate and ‘re-do’ the original woodstock. Just because this is a different generation doesn’t mean we still don’t all have the power to make it FEEL like it did the first time.

The music is what makes this powerful. It’s the thought provoking ‘feel good’ music, which obviously would include all of the music that was there originally. I am also not opposed to newer bands and artists, if you rule out every band that didn’t originate from the 60’s-70’s, then maybe you should become a little more open minded about the world we’re currently living in!

Let’s do this, let’s really do this.

Southern Cross | 5/16/2009, 6:34 pm EST

Well, every single one of you forgot one of the most memorable acts to perform at the origninal concert. . .the first time they ever played in front of people as a band. . .Crosby, Stills and Nash!

I say we get Joe Cocker, Crosby Stills and Nash, Grateful Dead, Jethro Tull (although they declined in 69′), Neil Young, Black Crowes, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Canned Heat (remaining members), the Who, John Mayer, Moody Blues, Edwin McCain, Pat McGee Band, Ingram Hill Band and various other bands on this calliber!

My father was at the orginial woodstock and I am PROUD to have been raised on the greatest music evers!

Here’s to the “music”!

Mike | 5/17/2009, 5:19 pm EST

I’m 17 and live in California, I would love to see a concert like Woodstock ‘69 that promotes peace and love through music. I think any bands, new and old, that sing about peace and provoke positive thoughts would be great at the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. But everyone who believes that ‘09 can be as peaceful as ‘69 needs to get the word out to friends, local bands and anyone who has connections to anyone. The more the word gets around the more motivated people will be to promote, attend, and play, at the event. Don’t forget that even though it is the music that drives the peace, it is the people that make peace . Go Woodstock ‘09!

Roberto Carmona | 5/23/2009, 7:44 pm EST

Can you do something, for The Doors, or Riders On The Storm, Creedence Clearwater Revisited or Iron Butterfly can be invited in this amazing festival
PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!
it could be great if all of us can see this three amazing bans in that amazing festival!!!!!!

matt luketich | 5/23/2009, 9:19 pm EST

I wish the 60’s could happen all over again. they should open woodstock up again and have people play for peace.

Music can heal when we listen | 5/26/2009, 11:49 am EST

The one thing I know for sure is that in the 60’s everyone was fighting for a cause together “anti-war” now I feel like we are apathetic and fight smaller causes but nothing together as a youthful nation. Woodstock brought people together for yes love and peace, but it was greater then that. they had a need to great music that transcends, teaches, and allows people to be free and who they are without judgment, yes there is bonaroo, but it is not the same. nothing can compare to impact of woodstock. We need a re-visit to the great musicians to bring us back to the days when as a collective group we wanted peace and believe din the good of others. the closest thing to woodstock is a phish show and thats simply one amazing band…not a slew of amazing bands. anyways we need to bring people back together and remind them why we love music, life and how we can make a difference as the youngsters of the world!

peace, love, happiness and hugs!

ps. Pink Floyd!

Missy | 5/27/2009, 6:40 pm EST

I am planning on attending this anniversary concert. Unlike the last one I am hoping that the performing acts will be some of the same artists that performed at the original WOODSTOCK!! I am 23 and I have no desire to see any bands of my time…however I grew up listening to classic rock and I am praying that the original artists are going to be performing…I would love to see Jethro Tull, Jefferson Airplane, Creedance Clearwater Revival, and Deep Purple to name a very small few….
I don’t want any artsist from the last one to ruin this anticipated event!!!

bonnie | 5/29/2009, 9:48 pm EST

I think it would be great if people all over the world have a woodstock in their town get the bands from around and have a people come together in name of love and music on that date.Peace

cosmo.. check out tribute2woodstock. Its happening in august about an hour north of chicago. Should be great music and good times.

whiteboyfrank | 6/3/2009, 3:21 pm EST

It’s simple you invite every band who attended 69, 94, & 99 even the Spin Doctors and see who is willing to show up.
Build a huge fire pit for the pyros. Set up the stages to coincide with the genres over the last 40 years and celebrate Peace, Love and Happiness!!!!!

94′ was a commercial more than a festival with $10 dominos personal pan pizza’s being traded for e and lsd. I was pissed at my generation for 99′ i was in Rome couldn’t read Italian but i got the jist when i saw Woodstock as a headline and the fire in the background.
We must control our anger people!!! There’s a lot to be pissed about these days we need to convert that energy into postive solutions and peace through preciously needed interaction amongst our neighbors and loved ones. It’s time to open the doors of perception again. The revolution is upon us don’t fall to the beliefs of the doomsdayers!!! The spirit of love is all around us, it’s a shame 99 went down the way it did, that was a summer of love for a lot of us, don’t get caught up in the hype, you get some drunks and some fire and you get a bonfire….. so f-in what!!!! It doesn’t classify a whole generation. Hope to see you all there =D

Ok I have looked for more info on Woodstock 09 and cant find none does anyone know if they are still having it and where it will be?
The cold hard facts are no matter how much we want it to Woodstock can never happen again. It will never be the same. Back then everyone was fighting for a cause, people cared they wanted change and were willing to show that. Now we are too lazy to stand up for anything, and that is a shame. Just look how many people showed up for Woodstock 500,000 with no internet advertising that was something. Now we are all connected everywhere we go and we still can not get that many people to stand up and do something.Today we would rather just bitch about something while sitting at are computer then go outside and really get involved.
Not to metion the music was different too back then. The music meant something. The artist were true to theirselves, it wasnt cookie cutter crap that is released now and forced upon us by the radio stations. Come on we are smarter then that.
There are however a few good artist out there (big names) that are outside of todays norms. My suggestion is if you are looking for artists that are still true to their spirt start looking at independent bands (the little guys) that dont have to to have their music appoved by 10 year olds (no offense). The world will only change if we make it but we have to come together to do that. Stop turning on the radio stop downloading the promoted hits (what they tell us we should lisen to) and start finding and supporting bands who are still in it for the music.
I am in a small company that does just that. We have a festival every year (this is the 3rd year) We bring together all different kinds of music mostly independent artist that want to make a differance in the music world who want to see another woodstock come together, who want to see the people make their own choses about what they like. We will never be woodstock and we dont try to be. We are just some small town friends who want to make a differance even if its a small one. This year GET OFF YOUR COMPUTER AND COME JOIN US.Its a 3 day event (camping) (30 bands) in Rome GA on July 3-5 to find out more info go to http://www.southernsocialexperiment.c om

stoned_age | 6/6/2009, 10:01 pm EST

so is there going to be a woodstock 09? If so theres not much time for them to get it together with out releasing any info, or advertisment.I do really want to participate in a statement that says some of us can still gather in large groups of people and celebrate in festives with a peaceful ending. with no fights or attitudes. woodstock 99 shouldnt have been called woodstock. it was great bands dont get me wrong, but the bands were in the wrong place.woodstock 99 should have been celebrated as ozzfest. this is the perfect moment in time to have a woodstock that could actually feel and give a statement like the original.

dael | 6/9/2009, 2:06 pm EST

I say we bring back the original sound man! Had the privilege of working with Bill after his woodstock stint in Phila.

Hey Richie Havens is still giggin’ and Arlo. Gad it was not just rock kids.

Woodstock 69 was the crossroads of many feetprints. All those feets have moved on to new crossroads, leaving a legend in their wake. You cannot recreate the legend, in fact you can only create new legends. Woodstock 69 was an unplanned miracle. Don’t plan Woodstock 09, just be there. Let the musicians play and let the people enjoy. Share a little love along with whatever you have to give, Be the peaceful loving hippy of yore, and the legend will live on…

Brittany | 6/10/2009, 9:14 am EST

I am excited about the plans for a woodstock 09. I am only 17 years old but I grew up on music from the 60s and early 70s. and I am a full-fledged modern day hippie. I want to see woodstock and I know that people will make it have the same peace and love vibe that the original woodstock had.

xsthomas | 6/16/2009, 11:41 pm EST

The only way to make it a real reunion is to have bands that were at the orginal concert, not some of these new bands that just sound like garage bands. if you do it will be like the other woodstock remakes. just idiot kids f***ing up everything with bad nusic. Why do I have a feeling that is what it is going to be.

Dave | 6/18/2009, 4:55 pm EST

Ah, if it only could be repeated, what a memory it was.
Maybe we’ll all have to re-live it with our own celebrations. I was thinking of contacting all of our friends who went and having our own mini re-union, might be the only way . . .

Illuminatus_78 | 6/27/2009, 6:08 pm EST

Try and get as many bands from that era as possible… even if they weren’t at woodstock..
The Who (Remaining members)
John Fogerty
Jackson Brown
Fleetwood mac
Robert Plant / Jimmy Page
Grateful Dead (Surviving members)
Doors (Surviving members)
Bob Dylan
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
Neil Young
Roger Waters / David Gilmour (Wishful thinking)
The Rolling Stones
The Guess Who
Paul McCartney
Almond Brothers band
The Eagles (won’t happen, but would be cool)
etc… You get the idea

Incorporate some modern bands and artists that catch the vibe like:

Eddie Vedder / Pearl Jam
Ben Harper
Bruce Springsteen
Bryan Adams
Dave Grohl / Foo Fighters – they can play anything…
Tom Morrelo (Solo The Nightwatchman)
Dave Mathews band (Not a fan but would fit)
Black Crowes
Counting Crowes
Sam Roberts
REM
U2 (would never happen, but you never know)

I think these types of bands… and i’m sure there are more or some that are replaceable… bt can you imagine? Look at the star power that was at the original Woodstock… that’s what is needed at this one… no egos, just music and free flowing good times.

Illuminatus_78 | 6/27/2009, 6:10 pm EST

And of course how can I forget… Tom Petty!!!

Dinosaur who Was There | 6/28/2009, 7:55 pm EST

You can never recapture the aura of that event in ‘69, no matter how hard you try. The only way to come close would be to have the groups (or surviving members thereof) from 1969 on the stage, no one else.
No commercialization, no MTV or VH1 coverage and no more than one porta-potty per 100,000 attendees. No one allowed in under the age of fifty. Most of us will be on Depends anyway and that is why we won’t need many porta-pottys. Also, I still have my Saturday and Sunday stubs from my $24 ticket from ‘69, because it was declared a free concert for those days. I would like to get two days credit if I show the ticket stubs, but not turn them in. They are worth a lot of money on eBay.

lenny | 7/1/2009, 8:01 pm EST

I graduated high school in ‘69 but did not go to Woodstock. I met people who did, however. What must be remembered is that the festival reflected the spirit- both hopes and frustrations of my generation. Unless the U.S. gets into another Vietnam situation with the military draft reinstated (God forbid) and you see your friends coming home in body bags, unless you witness motivational, inspirational political leaders (such as Obama) being assassinated;
unless you see riots by people demanding their civil rights, unless you experience the power of a generation expressing their discontent with these injustices, then another Woodstock is unlikely to happen again. The music was great, but the true power behind it came from these events. You of the younger generation, don’t idolize and envy we baby boomers and the times when we were young. You may not have the cohesiveness of our generation, but also you don’t need to suffer some of the disasters. We went through some bad times (and the music captured our reactions to them) so that you can now live in a more peaceful world. Live in your time and use your intelligence and spirit to make things better as we did in our youth.

Tom | 7/2/2009, 7:34 am EST

Woodstock was a festival that helped define a generation. It was a moment of complete harmony, egos were checked at the door. Some of the anniversary concerts had nothing to do with the original. If there is to be a 40th it should be the original artists. ( Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Richie Havens, The Incredible String Band, Mountain, Melanie, etc..) The very term “anniversary” suggests the original people not corporate music.

Dinosaur who as There | 7/19/2009, 4:52 pm EST

To all the stupid people trying to get the doors to play. Are you serious? Are you not aware that that’s impossible?

Jim Morrison died in like 71.RIP

Sounds like it’s going to be kind of corny though. Heroes of woodstock tour? Good bands though. Ill be there

alas in 69 my father wouldnt even allow me to see the movie. imagine there was drugs sex and rock and roll omg. those were the days and truly days i believe need to be relived as the world appears so very hopeless at times. we had faith and hope some love and peace most of all we gathered all and shared a common bond no matter what anyone says we hung tight to brothers and sisters no matter what, stood on what seemed to be the truth love and peace to all deb laurio

dear dinosaur who as there you have no idea about joni mitchell to say she was after the bucks is utter crap do you think the acts at woodstock performed for nothing? also if she was after money dont you think she would have a long line of commercial money making singles behind her? leave her alone

stoned_age | 8/7/2009, 12:19 pm EST

woodstock 09, not gonna happen people. its already aug. the anniversery is in a couple of weeks, and no word. so working people have no advance time to take off work. and attend. not gonna happen just wishes. and we know morrison died in 71, we meant the existing members.

stoned_age | 8/7/2009, 11:37 pm EST

just posted aug. 3. woodstock 09 is not going to happen. i think they lost out on something that could have worked and made a change in a lot of people. i am very let down that woodstock cant happen without money. it should be free as we are,
and the bands should join in peace and play for all of us for free. all they have to do is feel the musics power and energy of us and let it out! not having a woodstock is a huge let down.

Missed it the first time | 8/10/2009, 1:03 pm EST

I missed going to Woodstock the first time because of percieved responsibilities at that time. I’m not going to miss it the second time. I say we all go just like they did in 1969 despite the orders not to. Viva l’Amour!

thats funny, but true. it wouldnt surprise me that a lot of people will show up anyways. i would just to feel the vibe. and tour the area. just being where it happened on the anniversery would be fine for me.

D's Younger Cousin | 8/12/2009, 8:37 pm EST

I was there, my cousin and her husband took me. They only bought tickets for the first day. We got there and the wire fence was already going down–someone cut a big hole in it and left the wire cutters laying there. I took and saved them as a souvenir; don’t have them anymore. It rained like hell on our way out. I got the craps from something. No one would let us in their house to use the toilet. I had to squat behind the wheel of a VW bug to let it out. I had a really lousy time overall, and my cousins liked the folk singers. I was younger and only liked the rock acts, whom I never got to see. No one would even talk to me when I wandered off a bit by myself to try to meet people. My cousins were very straight. It was a crap night and weekend, but it was historical. I’m glad it happened, from that perspective.

Soul of Rock and Roll | 8/13/2009, 9:07 am EST

To all who said The Doors should play at Woodstock,

If you were intelligent at all you would know that by 69′ they wouldn’t even invite the doors to play, and not long after that, rest his soul, Jim Morrison passed away in Paris. So…. I don’t really think they are going to play unless you have some weird pact with the devil to get him back.

Anoonymous from Maryland | 8/13/2009, 9:44 am EST

I remember Woodstock. I had just got home from Viet Nam which was hell especially with one leg. I was feeling very down and depress,so I went. They said it was a “party of peace”. To feel the freedom of peace and the great music that was there helped me forget about my depression. Yes I would go again and again.

I was just a kid in the summer of love 1969 was a dream to me. I had told my dad I wanted to go and this coming from an 8 years old to my dad was a jaw dropper. Why the hell do you want to go to something like that he said to me. There will be nothing there but hippies and drugs and alot of drinking. As I hung my head down and walked away with my world ending around me, my love for music was over and the dream gone for good. About three days later my dad came home from work and called me to livingroom and ask me if I still wanted to go and in his words were ( Do you still want to go to that tree stock thing) all I remember after that was getting slapped a cross the face for saying the wrong words at the right time. It is funny now but wasn’t back then. When we got there after two days of driving it had already started and yes that sucked. I did get to see CSN and Hendrix and Iron Butterfly and Moutain just kicked my ass! As I looked around there were people every where having the best time of their lives. Dreams were made that day as well as come true for many both for bands and fans alike. Water falls of love surrounded us as the music played on. My dad kept saying what a mistake this was and how my mom was going to kill the both of us. To this day it was the coolest thing I have even done as a child other than going around the world a few times with the family. Woodstock is something that every one should go to and enjoy. To just let the world pass you by as the music fills your ears and lifts your soul to the highest of highs as your heart is surrounded by love laughter and music.

my version ; sing along
by the time we got to woodstock
there were half as many people there
and everywhere was song and the corporation
as i looked out over the field were the show was held
event staff everywhere
telling people they weren’t allowed to go on the field again

we are older with gray hair now
we just came to remember
as we drove away with a smile
we were there for the 40th ah ah ah!!!!!

stoned_age | 8/17/2009, 9:11 pm EST

wendy | 8/20/2009, 1:30 pm EST

i have been raised on woodstock as many of us have. i listen to many of the artists that preformed there and about once a month put on my woodstock dvd to clean the house to. i am proud to say that when my 5 year old son hears canned heat or janis he gets his groove on:) perhaps someday he will be a musician and i will have the priveledge of being the one who gave him such great roots!

I wanted to inform you on a new book coming out in October of this year… Rock & Roll…And The Beat Goes On by “Cousin Brucie” Morrow” foreword by Brian Wilson, a preface by Petula Clark and an epilogue by Billy Joel. Its a truely spectacular guide to the 1960s, and how music effected everything. From unforgettable movies, to world-changing history, Cousin Brucie takes you through the “explosive musical era”. When people talk about Rock & Roll, it’s not just about the music, but about the people. This book covers everyone from Elvis, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, the Doors, Alice Cooper and the Allman Brothers. It has over 300 photos, posters, album covers, record labels, quotes and more. Included is Cousin Brucies greatest artists of the era and their 250+ songs and a fun slang page in the back with a Rock and Roll Dictionary. Don’t Forget the amazing sidebars and stories about the history and background of music and the way the world was. order today

Its sad but true there will never and can never be another Woodstock festival again like the original in 69. Times have changed, people have changed they had a purpose, it was a movement of the tumultuous 60s that can never be repeated and be the same! It was the beginning and the ending! Its a nostalgic piece of beautiful history that cannot and will not be repeated ever again. I was 14 years old when woodstock happened and can remember the hordes of people on the roads in buses, hitch hiking, the communes. It can and never will be the same!

Yes, the 40th anniversary of Woodstock was attended by 18000 who enjoyed 6 hours of music and relieved the 3 days of Peace, Love & Music. The concert was MCd by County Joe McDonald who also led the audience in singing his F-I-S-H Cheer song. 15 year old Conrad Oberg began the concert playing Jimi’s version of our nations athem The Star Spangled Banner. Wow can he play. The evening also was very special for Leslie & Jenny as they were married during Leslies set. Leslie West and Mountain then played/sang Mississippi Queen. It was a beautiful day with a bright hot sun shinning, wild flowers blooming everywhere and ageing hippies, freaks, geeks and their children and grandchildren enjoying coming together to listen and share the music and stories of our youth. Bethel Woods and the museum are a great venue to keep the magic of Woodstock alive. The original festival grounds are as they were, without the mud, 40 years ago with the outline of the stage still visable. Sitting in the grass taking in the view you can hear the music still playing in the air. Woodstock is still happening with Peace, Love & Music 40 years later. To see phots check out WoodstockWitness.com for Barry Levine & Linanne Sackett book with never before published photos. Its a treasure book of the event that is simply known as Woodstock. Peace & Love. Back to the garden in 2019 for the 50th.
