The Beatles’ Experimental “Revolution 1 (Take 20)” Surfaces

Beatles fans still patiently waiting for Paul McCartney to release the band’s 1967 sound collage “Carnival of Light” were surprised by an even better gift this weekend as a 10-minute version of The White Album’s “Revolution 1″ leaked onto the Internet, giving fans a never-before-heard listen of what the White Album sessions must have been like. The track makes it clear why seemingly unrelated “Revolution 1″ and the maniacal “Revolution 9″ sound collage share the same name: In “Revolution 1 (Take 20)” John Lennon steers an extended, more experimental version of “1″ to its breaking point, using it as a conduit before launching into the avant-garde “9.”

According to the Ateaseweb message board, the song first surfaced on an upcoming, Europe-only bootleg Revolution: Take… Your Knickers Off, as nod to Lennon saying “Take your knickers off and let’s go” before “Revolution 1 (Take 20)” started rolling. As for how the song leaked out, that’s an even bigger mystery. According to Mark Lewisohn’s book The Beatles: Recording Sessions, only two copies of the take were made when recording the song was completed on June 4, 1968. One copy left the studio with Lennon that day, and the other remained behind. It’s unclear which copy appears on the bootleg, nor how the Revolution makers even acquired it.

“As someone who’s heard, I’d say, 99.8 percent of the Beatles music that has leaked onto bootleg, this is really interesting,” Beatles expert Richie Unterberger told EW.com. The site also reports Lennon was lying on his back while recording the vocals to make his voice sound different. 2009 is shaping up to be a big year for Fab Four fans still clamoring for unreleased material. Talking about “Carnival of Light” back in November, McCartney said “The time has come for its moment. I like it because it’s like the Beatles free.” YouTube has been pulling down the videos of Take 20, so get a listen over at Twelve Major Chords.

Sounds like a complete hoax to me.

Shaw | 2/27/2009, 11:30 am EST

The question shouldn’t be whether or not it’s a hoax (it’s real…) the real question is who is really leaking the music. Obviously it’s someone very close to the Fab Four who (thankfully) is trying to give us new music (Sean? Dhani?) Hopefully we can hear more…

knob0422 | 2/27/2009, 11:32 am EST

I have it and it sounds like the real deal to me. I do not think it is an “outfake”.

Sounds legit and awesome to me. Almost a shame that 1 and 9 couldn’t have been back-to-back… Maybe I’d actually give 9 a listen that way.

Hopefully this is a sign that remasters are coming soon. With the economy how it it, I can’t wait to rebuy hundreds of dollars of Beatles CDs (I actually kinda do).

Anonymous | 2/27/2009, 12:08 pm EST

I’ve been a Beatles bootleg collector for nearly 20 years…

This was one of the most fascinating things I’ve ever heard.

Chuck | 2/27/2009, 12:10 pm EST

“it is,” rather. Quite embarrassing to have a stutter online…

Anonymous | 2/27/2009, 12:13 pm EST

Apple Records should definitely release another outtake compilation, of strictly all the ‘avant garde/heavy psychedelic’ stuff that they might have been afraid to release on the earlier Anthology series.

This extended take of Revolution 1… Carnival Of Light (of course)… the rumored extra long version of Helter Skelter… a few other odds and ends…

I’d certainly buy it!

Deep In THe heart Of Zona | 2/27/2009, 4:01 pm EST

I know who “leaked” it. Thnaks!

Rob | 2/27/2009, 4:20 pm EST

Its incredible.. Animal Collective (no dis intended) take note, they beat you to it DECADES ago.

WOW.

KG | 2/27/2009, 5:33 pm EST

I think it’s real – and I think the source is one of the tape copies the article mentions. (I think the article is semi-correct – 2 copies of take 20 were made – One was taken away by Lennon, and THE OTHER WAS TAKEN AWAY ALSO by a person not named in EMI documents – of course the ORIGINAL SESSION TAPE still lies in EMI vaults) – this has PROBABLY leaked from a private collector who acquired the tapes at auction – rather than an EMI leak itself. So lets stay calm – I wouldn’t get expect more stuff coming unless similar “reference tapes” are in private collectors hands…

F*CKING FAB.

Mazzy | 2/27/2009, 7:25 pm EST

its real and has been documented i agree that when they FINALLY release remastered beautifully sounding CDS (who gives a rats ass about downloaded versions), they should include in a full box set a separate disc of all these experimental out takes.

I heard it. it sounds pretty real to me and really amazing. LONG LIVE THE BEATLES

Black Chaos | 2/28/2009, 2:13 am EST

John’s vocal performance, particularly the vamp on “alright” are a natural progression between #1 and #4. You can really connected the dots. I don’t think there’s a computer program that can generate such an authentic performance.

Scott | 2/28/2009, 2:18 am EST

I’m surprised so many out there thinks this is real. Early on there is an element from LOVE and then it seems like a mix of the released Revolution 1, the shoo bops from the promo film and grabs from Revolution 9. There are just to many recognizable elements in this that prevent me from thinking it is legit. It is however a great mix if it is a hox.

Brandon | 2/28/2009, 11:33 am EST

sounds too high fidelity for 1968.

wirenut | 2/28/2009, 12:45 pm EST

…big beatles fan here….this one sucks…

The dude | 2/28/2009, 12:57 pm EST

Wait, i thought Paul died years ago

iowa | 2/28/2009, 1:18 pm EST

Mazzy,

“who gives a rats ass about downloaded versions” ?? Who gives a rats ass about CDS! It’s all about the VINYL BOYYYYYYYYYYY! …or girl.

You want an addiction? start collecting vinyl.

Scott,

It is real. This take was discussed in Mark Lewisohn’s 1987 book, which chronicled all the official Abbey Road studio session tapes.

Revolution 1/Revolution 9 was apparently conceived like this, as one singular piece. But in the end, they edited the first 4 minutes off, as Revolution 1, as we know it. And most of the crazier bits from the 2nd part of this take, found their way into the Revolution 9 sound collage.

Furthermore, there are elements on this leak, that have NOT been heard anywhere before (particularly the ‘Mama/Dada’ backing vocal chant’.)

Anonymous | 2/28/2009, 1:59 pm EST

Brandon, the fidelity of this, is pretty much right in line with all the other Beatles 1968 White Album recordings.

Ludwig B. Seafoam | 2/28/2009, 4:24 pm EST

As a big Beatles fan, I thought Take 20 was a cool experience.

After my first listen, I thought Take 20 had a bit of the Beatles “Love Album” technique/approach that George and Son used. (By the way, I had mixed feelings re Love, but the Love album sounded –SONICALLY–very good in IMHO. In fact, it sounded great!)

Take 20’s “flying-saucer-horn-sound” (my best description) sounded new, yet familiar to me; similar to the horn sounds that can be heard at the ending of Strawberry Fields. But, I think Take 20’s actual horn sounds appear as bits and pieces in Revolution 9. Whatever.

The Yoko ending fits.

And given that Mr. M. has the Carnival of Light thing out there, the Fireman thing, etc., I’d say this Take is mostly real. It’s history. And it’s probably buzz, too.

Just my 2 cents…

Take this brother, may it serve you well.

Its sexy, to say the least. Quality could be higher, but at 192kbps its better than what most people used to pay for on iTunes. Can’t ask for more on a bootleg. Its just long enough for the walk to class in the mornings.

Anonymous | 2/28/2009, 7:30 pm EST

SirDurden,

There are higher quality audio files floating out there.

Anonymous | 2/28/2009, 11:32 pm EST

Of course it’s real and it’s also not newly discovered. Purple Chick have a copy of it on their White Album remaster (albeit in much poorer quality)

hate-filled man | 3/1/2009, 6:43 pm EST

I hate jerks/bloggers/poster/reviewer s who act like they know what the fuck they’re talking about when it comes to mastering. One, you’re not a sound engineer, and two, if you are, what’s the point of discussing sound quality on a message board with a bunch of know nothings?

Anonymous | 3/1/2009, 7:18 pm EST

i hate people like ‘hate-filled man’.

Joe Beltz | 3/1/2009, 7:54 pm EST

This is real and it shows how creative and revolutionary the Beatles really were. No one back then pushed the envelope like they did. Just think what kind of music would have came out of them had they stayed together.

hate-filled man | 3/1/2009, 9:06 pm EST

I think Anonymous is a scaredy-puss.

henchmen | 3/1/2009, 9:12 pm EST

Remember, many recordings were stolen from John’s home by assistants soon after his passing. This too could be the source of the leak.

Joe Beltz | 3/1/2009, 9:52 pm EST

Two words: JOE. BELTZ. suck it!

Sean | 3/2/2009, 2:26 am EST

You do hear elements of this take on Revolution #9.

Some people have said Frank Zappa “The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet” is like “Revolution #9 It has really nothing in common with “Revolution #9. There is no rhythm, sampling, reverse tape effects, and tape loops on “The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet” The music here is more fragmented, abstract and serious on “Revolution “9. The Beatles “Revolution #9 is a track that has reverse tape effects, sampling, and other looped effects.

The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet is more related to the 1968 Beatles track “What’s the New Mary Jane”. The Beatles “Tomorrow Never Knows” is really the Beatles track that everyone was blown away with it’s multilayered looped effects, one note bass figure, and drum pattern.

thomas | 3/2/2009, 9:04 am EST

is this definitely a 100% sure an actual Beatles recording or did someone take bootlegs and make their own mix to try and get famous?

james | 3/2/2009, 1:09 pm EST

there is a monitor room mix of this song that has been bootlegged for years – audio of yoko being interviewed in the control room while an early mix of revolution 1 plays in the background. the extended playout evidenced on that recording is the same as it is on this one. this is real folks.

Walden Greenwood | 3/3/2009, 2:05 am EST

For sure real Beatles. Rumor is that it was leaked by Paul, trying to convince other Beatles (families) to release album called “Long Long Long” with this track, the very long Helter Skelter, the long “Flying,” long “It’s All Too Much” and “Carnival Of Light.” Would be a great record.

Riot Nrrrd™ | 3/3/2009, 4:18 am EST

Why is this track 10:46 in length if the “Revolution: Take… Your Knickers Off” cover says 11:32?

As for the track itself, it’s obviously a fascinating historical artifact; but as an experimental song goes, “Tomorrow Never Knows” blows it (and all comers) into the weeds.

winston o'boogie | 3/3/2009, 4:00 pm EST

the shorter version floating around has been speed corrected to the same tempo as the commercially released version of the song, so it runs a tad faster than the version on the “take your knickers off” bootleg.

Kevin | 3/3/2009, 4:40 pm EST

This isnt some remix this is the real deal along with Carnival of Light and a 27:11 version of Helter Skelter. The sessions were so uniqe for the whit album with ringo walking out yoko there at john’s side the whole time and people like eric clapton coming in and out. The white album is 4 solo albums in one said rolling stone in 1968.

Nick Cowie | 3/3/2009, 6:26 pm EST

The initial disconnected dialogue snippets provide a spurious ‘outtake’ quality. The Lennon ‘knickers’ dialogue is not John Lennon speaking, rather a sped up imitator placed to give the whole thing a semblance of plausibility. The actual music is the White Album track gutted, looped + dubbed by obvious use of digital drop in plus samples. Astonishing that Rolling Stone should fall for this home grown hooey. Less surprising that the outer reaches of web fandom should be so gullible and, frankly ignorant of their subject. The ‘Have You Heard The Word?’ de notre jour.

Nick Cowie | 3/4/2009, 4:44 am EST

A quick correction! The ‘knickers’ dialogue is an edit flown in (and sped up) – I just found it on Vigotone’s ‘Kinfauns to Chaos’. ‘could take days to unravel this collage + find where everything’s been sourced from …

Mike | 3/6/2009, 6:55 pm EST

Actually Nick, if you listen to “kinfauns” disc 2,you’ll clearly hear that this new leak is authentic. It’s the exact same version that is in the background when Yoko is speaking.

Steve W | 3/7/2009, 12:10 pm EST

This is real, definitely.

My theory is that it was leaked by someone who is working on the White Album remaster which is apparently due for release this year. Some magazines have heard it and say it’s really good.

jaime | 4/3/2009, 6:42 am EST

better all could make our revolution 20, if everyone take a single recording and mix them all, in honour to lennon
