After Faith No More, Is There Hope For Other Long-Shot Reunions?

2/27/09, 4:44 pm EST

For nearly 10 years, Faith No More fans have mourned the demise of one of the most influential and under-appreciated rock acts of the 1990s — all with the firm understanding that there would be no return. And, well, they’ve never really been given much reason to believe a reunion could ever come to pass, with frontman Mike Patton insisting time and time again in interviews that a reunion wouldn’t be happening on his watch. So imagine the shock this week when fans learned that the band had signed on for a strictly European reunion run.

(Get reacquainted with Faith No More with our career-spanning photo gallery here.)

Unfortunately, Patton’s publicist says Mike, like the rest of the band, will not be talking to the media about the reunion trek, perhaps because it’s one of those monumental reunions that will succeed with or without press. But eight years ago, Patton was talking about Faith No More, telling me he just didn’t think a reunion was in the cards.

“It’s a band I was in, and I had a great time,” Patton said. “It’s not that I’m ashamed of it or anything. I think we made some great music. I just don’t believe in trying to relive that.”

News of the band’s impending return was buried at the bottom of a press release announcing Patton’s work on the score for the upcoming film Crank 2: High Voltage. The missive provided information on Patton’s upcoming live performances (including one with beatbox messiah Rahzel at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April) before cursorily noting Patton’s “highly anticipated reunion tour with Faith No More in Europe this summer.”

Eight years ago, Patton scoffed at the suggestion of new music. “We’d suck,” he reasoned. “We’d be horrible. It would be an absolute travesty to everything that we did that was good. We would ruin every great moment that we had, and things are not meant to last for long periods of time — especially in the music industry. We made four records, they all stand up, they’re strong, and we made a very good statement. We said what we had to say, and we fucking crawled off and died. What’s the problem with that? It happens.”

While the band has no plans to tour the U.S., one industry insider suspects that, if the European trek goes well, “the right offer” will be the only thing standing between Faith No More and a full American run.

On Thursday, bassist Billy Gould issued a statement detailing the band’s reunion lineup. He said the guys recently began talking again, and even hinted that new music could be forthcoming. But eight years ago, Patton could see one reason, and only one reason, for a reunion.

“Trying to rekindle that spark would be for money, and for money only, and the music would just be God awful,” he said. “We broke up not because we were not getting along or because one guy had a bigger ego than the other, or any of that crap. I think our music was starting to slow down. I think we’d come full circle, and hell, I thought we had a good thing. I thought it was a very good way of going out… realizing that we were slowing down, and pulling the plug.”

Of course, the lesson to be learned here is that you should never say never. Patton and the boys came around to the idea of reuniting. So did the Police, Van Halen, Phish, Blink-182, Limp Bizkit, Creed and Rage Against the Machine. So what other fractured bands should mend fences and return to the stage? Here’s a wish list, as well as the reasons why you probably shouldn’t hold your breath.

Band: Guns n’ Roses‘ original lineup
Date last seen: July 17, 1993 in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Why you shouldn’t hold your breath: The bad blood between Axl and Slash seems to have only deepened over time, with Rose telling Billboard recently, “What’s clear is that one of the two of us will die before a reunion and however sad, ugly or unfortunate anyone views it, it is how it is.”

Band: Led Zeppelin
Date last seen: December 10, 2007 in London
Why you shouldn’t hold your breath: Frontman Robert Plant said that the band’s surviving members explored a reunion after their one-off tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, but ultimately decided they couldn’t do it without late drummer John Bonham. “We were incomplete, and we’ve been incomplete now for 29 years,” Plant told Absolute Radio.

Band: The Smiths
Date last seen: December 12, 1986 in London
Why you shouldn’t hold your breath: Despite seven-figure offers to bury the hatchet, guitarist Johnny Marr and cheerless frontman Morrissey insist it’ll never happen, with the singer telling BBC Radio 2 as recently as this month, “People always ask me about reunions and I can’t imagine why… The past seems like a distant place, and I’m pleased with that.”

Band: Pavement
Date last seen: November 20, 1999 in London
Why you shouldn’t hold your breath: While guitarist Scott Kannberg and bassist Mark Ibold have publicly expressed interest in reviving the band, Stephen Malkmus told NME recently that he’d be interested in doing “Something small in 10 years, like the Zeppelin thing sounds good to me.” However, the latest rumors suggest the band has retained a booking agent, so who knows?

Band: Soundgarden
Date last seen: February 9, 1997 in Honolulu, Hawaii
Why you shouldn’t hold your breath: While there doesn’t seem to be any animosity amongst the band’s members, frontman Chris Cornell told MTV News in 2007 that the band was “happy with how it ended. There was no unfinished business. Soundgarden wasn’t a band where we broke up and everyone was like, ‘I’m never fucking talking to you again.’ It’s something we don’t feel we need to do.”

Band: System of a Down
Date last seen: August 13, 2006 in West Palm Beach, Florida
Why you shouldn’t hold your breath: The band’s self-imposed “indefinite hiatus” was upgraded by frontman Serj Tankian recently to “permanent,” and he told New Zealand’s Stuff that “every few months, I am honored to hear interesting rumors about whether the band is going to tour or break up permanently. I find them all to be very entertaining.” Meanwhile, guitarist Daron Malakian told MTV News last year, “If anyone’s holding their breath for a System record, they’re going to turn blue and pass out.”

Band: Talking Heads
Date last seen: March 18, 2002 in New York City
Why you shouldn’t hold your breath: Reunion talk caught fire soon after Talking Heads performed at 2002’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, but leader David Byrne later told Australia’s The Age that the split was too vicious for absolution. “Another [reason] is that musically, we’re just miles apart.”

Band: The Kinks
Date last seen: June 15, 1996 in Oslo, Norway
Why you shouldn’t hold your breath: Lead singer Ray Davies has said he thinks the seminal English rockers could reform, but for new music only. A tour, he told BBC Radio last fall, would be too difficult on his brother, guitarist Dave Davies, who suffered a stroke in 2004.

Band: Stone Roses
Date last seen: August 29, 1996 in Reading, England
Why you shouldn’t hold your breath: Both Ian Brown and John Squire have continually dispelled reunion rumors over the years, and neither has spoken a word to the other since Squire jumped ship in 1995. But last month, a spokesperson for Squire said he “has no plans to return to music.”

Band: Minor Threat
Date last seen: September 23, 1983 in Washington, D.C.
Why you shouldn’t hold your breath: Frontman Ian MacKaye would never sell out that hard, and said as much during a recent lecture at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, last November. “Why would you ever want that to happen?,” he said, later explaining that the band’s music was a reflection of the times, and that it wouldn’t be right to play those songs again.

Who else are you hoping against hope to see reunited? Let us know what you think, and tell us which never-going-to-happen reunion you’d like to see come to fruition.

The Replacements.

Yes, Chris Mars won’t play drums anymore. Yes, Bob Stinson and Steve Foley are dead. And yes, Slim Dunlap won’t be invited back.

But, Westerberg and Tommy Stinson would be up for it, and it would be a cool thing to see Paul and Tommy play replacements songs in a one-off at a festival, with maybe Billie Joe Armstrong on lead guitar, and Tre Cool on drums.

If any band is indebted to The Replacements, it’s Green Day.

The Time, with ALL 7 original members. Plus Prince behind the boards. Not U2, not Michael Jackson, not Bruce & the E Street Band, not Van Halen, not Nirvana has ever kept Prince on his toes like The Time did. And as 4 the Revolution: is it the post-1999 version with Wendy on guitar, or Dez Dickerson on guitar & Jill Jones singing backup?

I know for a fact that I dont speak for myself but a reunion and a sit down and talk would be wonderful between the remaining members of journey & steve perry, dont get me wrong journey is doing fine without him.But people would just go beserk if perry was to rejoin and all the pistons in this monster car would fire again.Peaople just love seeing all original band members in the bands they grew up listening to because they suddenly turn young again. It happens to me every time I see mccartney live,im six years old all over again and you cant put a price tag on that!!!

Josh | 2/27/2009, 9:04 pm EST

I’m not trying to burst anyone’s bubble, but can anybody tell me a single moment where a band reunited for the better? Usually is the case where a band reunites, releases a sub-par album, and tours behind it. People want Pink Floyd to reunite? Why? So they’ll tour? Why, so you can listen to a sixty year old David Gilmour singing songs that were written when he was 25? Weren’t Momentary Lapse and Division Bell bad enough? Let them retain their excellent reputation and fade gracefully.

I never had the opportunity to see Pink Floyd on the Division Bell tour. I would love to have that chance given that I was around 14-15 and am now 29. I became a huge fan during my freshman year of college thanks to the girl I was dating at the time. I don’t care how long it has been, those guys are tremendous, not to mention that Rick Wright has already passed on. Lets go!

sammy5683 | 2/27/2009, 10:26 pm EST

it would be great to see velvet underground or pavement or pixies (again) and who else? uhhhh, maybe the original smashing pumpkins. they were a really underrated group. in their prime, they were so frickin’ good. guns n roses would be good with the original lineup but i gotta say they were overrated to begin with. al lot of people nirvana ruined hair metal groups but thats a crock. nirvana was a great band. they even had some metal influence. if any of those hairmetal group put out great albums, they would be at least remembered today. people remember metallica’s self titled and the the use ur illusions but the others were forgotten because most likely they sucked. soundgarden was kinda metal. hair metal was all right all in all. they make good f’ me songs and aside from that theres only a handful of good metal groups. led zep isn;t metal by the way. thats hard rock. its like hendrix only not psychadelic. metallica was pretty good, g n r was pretty good even though axl sux a c’oc*. talented singer/songwrited but comepletely full of it. slash was probably just as important….well, who else? led zep wouldnt be bad with John Bonhams son. if its going to be anyone, it should be him. if not, dont do the tour. …also another thing, NIN and radiohead should have been higher than g’n'r on the greatest artists lists. I dont understand this whole competition they have with radiohead, but i think trent’s great and probably doesn;t get enough credit. peace.

guy howard brown | 2/27/2009, 10:51 pm EST

Hey josh,I must respect ur opinion but im going to guess ur still n ur twenties or younger, some of these bands not all would and still do have an excellent fan base.just because someone is in their fifties or sixties doesnt mean there ready for a rocking chair!!! tell that to steven tyler and the rest of aerosmith,or pink floyd because everywhere they tour or would they will sell out the joint maybe and hopefully u can say that if ur fav band is still around in twenty years and I hope 4 ur sake they still are.people and bands have their status and if you have been around for quite some time and are still togather and still have a huge fan base broke up or not people r always going 2 want it.there are millions that would love 2 see zepplin tour again new fans and old because music my friend does not have an age its the universal laungage and it makes everyone happy.I myself love some of the new bands as well as the older and icons of our time, tell everyone here eric clapton is no good anymore because he is above sixty and you will get torn 2 pieces!!

clover | 2/27/2009, 11:38 pm EST

They should totally include Courtney Love.

Zorin | 2/27/2009, 11:44 pm EST

I liked Division Bell…but outside of touring, of course, wgaf. Do we care they are having beers and snorting races, no? It’s either a tour and album or one of the two.

The think I can’t stand is when a band like SOAD take 3 years off and they are put in this list. Like Blink 182, if they come back, cool…but it hasn’t been like 15 years or anything, so what’s the big deal.

dkstar | 2/27/2009, 11:47 pm EST

There should be some time related precursors when we say reunion tour, Sure The Smiths, Pink Floyd, Zepplin, The Time, all make the final cut,, but really? STP (ripping their fans off with this Break up and reunite after 4 years crap) There should be at least a time limit of 15 years before band can say there re unitied and going to tour, otherwise they just to a long break and getting back in the studio, I mean Def Leppard took like 6 years to release hysteria after pyromania , they could have labled it a reunion tour, Portishead just released a new album after like 10 years, they never claimed to be reunitied, they just quitely released a album, any band who was nothing to claim their getting the band back together after anything less than 10 years is lame and after their fans money and probably put out crap… this of course excludes bands who try to get back together after a death of a band mate..

shirley | 2/27/2009, 11:59 pm EST

great article about faith no more. easy read and well written. will check in again for chris harris.

dkstar | 2/28/2009, 12:03 am EST

I would also like to say, I do understand there are bands who have made wonderful music and broke up following one or two albums, because they were too drunk or stoned on something to know any better, I know some bands do have their under ground success and have a true following core fans, but bands like STP,Blink 182, motley crue, Phish, Creed, No doubt(might get a pass, if they don’t call it reunion tour), there are so many bands that have claimed that title and sont deserve if all mention above and more. The Police, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd(one off show) The Faces, Zepplin, all deserve to use that title.
Really? Reunion Blink 182? it a money grabbing trick they are selling their fans, probably planned out in advance (hey lets break up and do some other things, then well get back together in like 4 years and call it a reunion and sell out shows and make major money off our fans, hey lets even act like were fighting to make it more legit!!) what BS they try to sell, I just hope most people see through it

dkstar | 2/28/2009, 12:05 am EST

Zorin, see you get it!!! lame ass way to rip money off their fans

Bryan | 2/28/2009, 12:15 am EST

A true Nirvana reunion can never happen. NOBODY could ever match Kurt’s vocals, and the closest would be groehl, and he couldn’t sing cause he would have to be on drums.

No Beatles reunion, please. Love the Beatles, but without Lennon and Harrison, and having their kids fill in, that’s wrong. It would be a completely diff. band, just like Over the Rainbow isn’t Rainbow now, because that band has Ritchie Blackmore’s son, not Ritchie Blackmore in the lineup.

How come Rolling Stone didn’t mention the original Mott the Hoople reunion that’s taking place in the UK (for three shows?) this year? I’m much more excited about that reunion than Faith No More.

C’mon People! The Beatles? Creedence? Let’s think of a band that could actually reunite, not one who would have to reunite in a cemetery.

If Obama can appoint Hillary Clinton Secretary of State, I don’t see why David Byrne can’t make another record with Tina Weymouth. The musical distance between Byrne and the Tom Tom Club doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Think of it as a big space in which creativity can occur.

I agree with Josh; bands that ‘reunite’ are almost always a watered-down version of their original selves. And most ‘reunions’ now aren’t even with all original members, or a band’s most popular lineup, wtf! I mean, look at Faith No More. The Faith No More most of us know & love is with Jim Martin playing guitar, but instead, they have the dude who played on Album of the Year?!?! I call bullshit

are people really clammoring for a Blink 182 reunion? REALLY???? I guess rock really is dead…

your mom | 2/28/2009, 12:08 pm EST

1) Someone posted New Order. They ARE together and they toured over here in the UK a year or two ago.
2) Anyone who thinks System of a Down should reunite should do a serach for video of their last tour performances. They fell apart.(BYOB in Barcelona was particularly embarrassing).
3) The Smiths won’t reunite because Mike Joyce won a multi-million pound (way more than dollars) settlement from Morrissey over back royalties and has all the Smiths royalties on albums currently tied up. And Morrissey doesn’t need them anyways.
4) CCR? – very acrimonious and Tom Fogerty is dead.
5) Dead Kennedys w/jello biafra – the directors track of American Hardcore suggested they couldn’t get interviews because of all the laswsuits between the band members. Ditto the Misfits.

Now bands/groups that need/should/might? reunite:

Squeeze

First thing is first, no effin Beatles reunion, they stopped touring in the 60s when everyone was still alive and there is no reason to change that. Julian,Sean, and Dhani, all accomplished musicians in their own right, but they are not their fathers, sorry to break it to you people but deal with it. Secondly stay away from any band that has a dead band member. Floyd, Zeppelin, and definitely Nirvana. There is no Nirvana without Kurt Cobain, he was the driving force behind Nirvana lyrically, and anyone singing his songs in his place can not recreate the wrought emotion that he took out of every word. GNR would be the best possible reunion tour. I listened to Chinese Democracy and could not figure out what the hell I was listening to, because all it sounded like to me was a new Axl Rose album not a Guns N Roses album. I don’t know about anyone else, but GNR is not GNR without, Duff,Izzy and Slash

JP | 2/28/2009, 3:51 pm EST

My immediate response is I don’t want any band to reunite. With the exception of Aerosmith, any band that reunite or continuing past their prime really are a shell of their former glory.

The only band I can think of that could as good or better than they were before if they can reunite is The Libertines. Only caveat is that Pete Dohertry needs to sober up before reuniting with Carl Barat.

Elliot | 2/28/2009, 3:53 pm EST

THe beatles had maybe 3 songs that they can still play.
Yesterday and blackbird, as far as I know, don’t have any beatle other than Paul.

Why Don’t We Do it In The Road was just Pail and Ringo. I’d like to see them bust that out.

dicky should be allowed to play with the allmans, his guitar style, along with duane’s was the the whole basis of their sound, more so than greg’s singing, trucks and haynes are great but could never match one note from betts

Faith No More will be the one that will prove, that a reunion WILL be worthwhile, mark my words !
For gods sake its not like The Stone Roses or Field Marshal Slug.

CR1ZZ | 2/28/2009, 4:40 pm EST

Hay I don’t know if anyone’s already suggested this but Black Sabbath should definately do another reunion. And do a full world tour, not just america and england. Zeppelin still could I think. I agree that john was great but the who still tour with just pete and roger. With Zeppelin you only need plant and page. Guns’n'roses, if it happens, will be the biggest thing to happen to music since Live 8. But once again it would need a full world tour behind it. The kinks are in my top 5 favourite bands, the too need a reunion concert at least. Just to see lola and you really got me would be amazing. Pink Floyd won’t happen. I stopped hoping a year following their small scale reunion. The Beatles CAN’T happen without all four members. End of story. If the grateful dead happened it would be really cool. And if there is any fucktard that thinks Nirvana should tour without Kurt they’re on drugs. Thats probably worse than that useless ‘rockstar INXS’ show that attempted to replace michael hutchence, through reality tv for fucks sake. If you liked Nirvana go to a foo fighters show. Dave rocks harder live than Kurt anyway.

Conrad Schafman | 2/28/2009, 4:49 pm EST

Love the fact that the Libertines are gettin some mentions. There is absolutely no other band I would rather see than THE LIBERTINES. But I would probably have to go to England just to see the reunion, because there isnt a shot in hell that Doherty will ever get a visa to come to America. Beatles talk is ridiculous. After seeing The Police kick out the jams in concert, I cant reall think of anybody. I would see the Clash, even without Strummer

The Replacements

Sleater-Kinney

Though they haven’t technically, “split”, Outkast haven’t done anything together in almost three years. Something from them soon would be a relief.

Finally, I noticed that the comments saying Nirvana should reunite. Um… WHAT? They were one of the greatest bands ever, but, for those people in a cave, Kurt is dead! Anybody else fronting the band would be a sin unless they changed the name. It would be like calling a vegeburger a sirloin steak.

heathen2002 | 2/28/2009, 10:53 pm EST

Faith No More? Does anyone really give a shit? Faith No More without Jim Martin..uh yeah, right
BTW-
1)Someone mentioned Outkast, and I read on pitchfork and some other website that they are due to start work on a new album at the end of the year (fingers crossed!)
2) Squeeze is actually alive and kicking! They toured Europe last year, and Difford and Tillbrook are working on a new album! Yeah!
3) Chad Ries-Stay off the rock..Really..Bad Co. with Brian Howe back in? You have got to be shitting me…

Derek Ayyyytch | 2/28/2009, 10:55 pm EST

“NME.Com reported on 31st July 2007 that Peter Hook had posted a message on his MySpace blog, claiming he would take steps to prevent Morris and Sumner to continue as New Order, writing “This group [New Order] has split up! You are no more New Order than I am! You may have two thirds, but don’t assume you have the rights to do anything ‘New Order-ey’, because you don’t. I’ve still got a third! But I’m open to negotiation.” [23][24]“

… but I love old Van Halen and they need to make up for that horrible, horrible excuse for a tour that I wasted my money on last year and give us a real tour with Michael Anthony. This time leave Eddie’s hack of a son at home(No offense but the kid sucks. His bass sounds like a broken lawn mower and that’s not a good thing, unless it’s on a Tom Waits record). And since the last tour was so bad they should do this tour for free. The show I saw Eddie was obviously wasted, he played horrible. Ok my rant is done, but seriously those bastards owe me.

Also, I don’t know if it was a joke, but someone mentioned the Hooters….those guys are still a vital part of the industry apart…Forget Nervous Night, check out the Amore ep if you think I’m joking. Good Stuff.

Really Reunion? Any band that started in the late 80’s early ninety’s can not preform together as a band and call it a reunion tour, that is a lame tactic just recently done by STP, Any bands that formed in the late eighties or nineties and had that one hit wonder or maybe that one half decent album, doesn’t get too “get the band back together and call it a reunion” That is a Dickhead thing to do to your fans, like Blink 182 are now doing, I am surprised (maybe not so much) that RS, is even giving these turds credit for breaking up, most of these so called reunions seem to be a mere tactic to get their fans all rallied up for not so great new tunes or album, and to sell out their clubs shows, there are bands who have the right to call their getting back together a reunion, but most don’t.

dkstar | 3/2/2009, 12:01 am EST

I also feel that there are some bands that do deserve to get passes to call it a reunion, bands that were together for more than 10 years then stopped playing but they must have made an impact of some sort in their genre of music and at least put out 3 good albums, or bands that had the unfortunate loss of a band mate and stopped making music because of this.

Anonymous | 3/2/2009, 12:29 am EST

Hey man, IMHO, Blink 182 were one of the most enjoyable bands I can think of. When they broke up, they were right on the cusp of turning over a new, mature leaf. They had a string of hits, put on energetic live shows. I mis them, and am glad they’re getting back together. Whether or not this conforms to the rules of a “reunion” means fuck-all to me :)

billybadass | 3/2/2009, 1:42 am EST

Dean Wien | 3/2/2009, 9:52 am EST

Here’s an original reunion, but first they should go into the studio and record a new album of new material. The name of the group should be determined, but it would be sort of a Ramones reunion. Here’s the line-up:
Marky Ramone – Drums
C.J. Ramone – Bass/Lead Vocals
Daniel Rey – Guitar (Danny Ramone)
Produced by Tommy Ramone
with guests:
Andy Shernoff – Background vocals
Mickey Leigh(Joey’s brother) – Background vocals/Guitar
Jed Davis(Bowery Electric) – Keyboards/Vocals and Writer
Special Guest:
Handsome Dick Manitoba – Background vocals

This would be the only way to go if any type of reunion was made for The Ramones.

The J. Geils Band – the best live band the U.S. ever produced. Often called the American Rolling Stones. They reunited for one night this year (Feb. 19) to open the new House of Blues in their hometown of Boston. Their first gig in 10 years (but original drummer Stephen Jo Bladd declined). If you like rockin’ Blues then do yourself a favor kiddies and check them out on Youtube under J. Geils Band – House of Blues. Most are in their 60’s now but they still kick it out. Then search out their early days from the 70’s. So much more to them than their 80’s hits like Centerfold. Ok ya fucking meat baskets. The question is for reunion, not a fucking resurrection. Nobody who is dead can come back and get back together with their band, Courtney Love and Scott Stapp included. And Fugazi isn’t broken up. A little bit of research into the music you listen to people might help you to realize that either they are dead, or still together, just taking decades to record. Perfection has it’s price I suppose. And some monkey said earlier that reunions never work and he went on and on like a bad fucking nickelback record. Here’s a couple of reunions that worked just fine chump.. Mudcrutch and Judas Priest.

Naldo | 3/2/2009, 5:21 pm EST

The classic line up of GENESIS (Banks/Collins/Gabriel/Hackett /Rutherford) would be awesome. Everyone but Gabriel seems to be on board with it….a full Lamb Lies Down on Broadway show would RULE! Especially if they threw in some Foxtrot/Selling England… stuff as encores.

Hmm,Soundgarden would be awesome. Very unlikely, though Cornell may want to think it over after his new album absolutely tanks. It would deprive Pearl Jam of Matt Cameron, but hey, they could go get Jack Irons back into the fold! Who IMO was their best drummer.

A new RATM album would be awesome.

The original REM lineup would be sweet.

Metallica with Jason Newstead would be awesome (Sorry pigtails Trujillo just doesn’t cut it for me).

Jimmy Page should reunite THE FIRM with Paul Rodgers! (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA).

Grohl /Oliveri with QOTSA would rule (I really want to see Dave in a full show on drums, it needs to happen).

Pixies should never break up again.

A Guns n Roses original lineup reunion is about as likely (and unwelcome at this point) as a third bush term. Pavement, Minor Threat, and Talking Heads would be awesome. Zeppelin isn’t Zeppelin withought Bonham. Most of those other bands I could do without. Other reunions I’d like to see (in no particular order):
REM original line up
Smashing Pumpkins original line up (a chance for them to stop sucking)
The Pixies
and last but not least,
PINK FRIGGIN FLOYD
I know its not the same without Rick but seriously!

Oh and by the way: “Nirvana with Seether’s Frontman” would be blasphemous. Seether sucks cock and doesn’t deserve to be said in the same breath as Nirvana. Kurt Cobain WAS Nirvana. Anyone who would even suggest a replacement doesn’t know shit about the band. It’s an insult to his memory.

The Screaming Trees! – Mark Lanegan is amazing solo, with the Gutter Twins, with Isobel Campbell, Twilight Singers, etc. BUT, the Screaming Trees is THE most underrated band of the ’90’s and out of Seattle. Listen to their stuff. Amazing and I never got to see them live, though I have seen Lanegan many times over the years. Screaming Trees are the best band from the Seattle scene of the ’90’s, and I am a fan of nearly all of those bands. INCENDIARY, bluesy, heartbreaking, touching, heavy rock!!

rascalx | 3/4/2009, 2:41 am EST

It’s very simple people – Reunions should ONLY include bands that incorporate the ORIGINAL members, not all the wanna-be’s. If core members of the band are dead (ie. the Beatles, Nirvana, Floyd, etc..) then a reunion is pointless and a waste of both our time and the artists. Before someone rips me a new ass, I’m not saying bands shouldn’t get NEW members or make NEW music. Notice my emphasis on NEW. If you get new members, change the band name and make new music. Otherwise leave other people’s legacies alone. I’d love to see surviving members of the Beatles, Floyd, Zeppelin, Queen, etc.. do more stuff – just not by milking the original band name! – Are you listening Axl? :)

RS should tally up the reunion requests then maybe explain to the top 3 bands who we want to reunite. Then these comments might mean a little more. Example, Husker Du have dominated this blog. A reunion probably would happen with them if they saw how many people want a reunion out of them.

Just listened to this ‘Husker Du’ everyone’s been suggesting. They aint half bad but people who read RS magazine can’t say, with a strait face, that they want that band to reunite more than a bands listed such as:
Dire Straits
Jethro Tull
Supertramp
the Kinks
and Simon and Garfunkle
By the way Art Garfunkle does heaps of suprise end-of-show/encore sort of things all the time at Paul Simons concerts. If you attend a concert of theirs in a descent venue you’ll see them then.

Plant and Page in the ’90s was awsome, but that’s the closest it’ll ever be. The best concert I’ve EVER been to was the Who in 1982 with Kenny Jones, and it’s arguable that that was really the Who without Kieth Moon. Either way, both were close enough for me.

First off a beatles reunion. Really? Of all the stupidest reunions in rock histroy the beatles reuniting with Lennon and Harrison’s sons would be down right disgraceful. They may be good, they might be awesome, hell I don’t care if they were better than the beatles ever were (which by the way they are not) they are not the freaking Beatles. The beatles are one of the few bands who left us with such a perfect track record and unblotched legacy. Don’t screw that up. Now a Led Zeppelin reunion I would go for as long as Bonhams son Jason plays drums. The reason this is acceptable for Zep but not the beatles is because as great as Bonham was he was not a lead singer or songwriter. The Beatles without George Harrison would not be as good, but still acceptable, but without Lennon who was practicly the leader of the group, I mean come on. Another reunion I’d like to see is Pink Floyd. I know some people think it’s not pink floyd without Rick Wright. But hold the phone a moment, isn’t this the same band who in 1968 carried on even without Syd Barret who was the bands lead singer, lead guitarist, lead songwriter as well as the bands founder and most popular member. Isn’t this the same band who split with Roger waters in 1985, waters who was the groups primary songwriter, singer, and leader after Barrets demise, and then carried on under the leadership of David Gilmour who was not even an original member of the group. If all those versions of Floyd without Barrett and waters were acceptable how come a reunion without Wright would be so wrong? And I find it ammusing that although Waters and Nick Mason both want to reunite, the whole thing ain’t happening because Dave put his foot down. He may have forgotten that he is not an original member of the band, and if his predecessor Barrett was replaceable, then he certainly is as well. I would love to see Waters, Gilmour and Mason reunite but if Dave refuses that shouldn’t stop Waters and Mason. Get another guitar player, it’s what they did for Syd. That said another awesome reunion would be the rolling stones line up of Jagger, Richards, Taylor, Wymann, and Watts. I saw them in 2005 with Ron Wood and they were very good, but from what I hear Ron Wood ain’t doing so good as of late. Heavy drinking and such. Nontheless I have a great respect for Wood and would love for him to stay with the stones, but if he can’t get his act together they might have to give him the boot the same way they did to Brian Jones. Also like I said up above, a beatles reunion would be uncalled for,but i would love to see Paul and Ringo get together for something new.
