Faith No More Confirm Reunion, Reveal Lineup

Faith No More have made their long-rumored reunion official, releasing a statement detailing why they got back together after a decade-long dormancy and revealing the band’s lineup for their European summer tour.

(Get reacquainted with Faith No More with our career-spanning photo gallery here.)

Despite an amicable split in 1998, and constant demands by fans to reunite, the members of Faith No More never approached one another about the possibility of reforming. “What’s changed is that this year, for the first time, we’ve all decided to sit down together and talk about it,” bassist Bill Gould said in the statement. “And what we’ve discovered is that time has afforded us enough distance to look back on our years together through a clearer lens and made us realize that through all the hard work, the music still sounds good, and we are beginning to appreciate the fact that we might have actually done something right.”

The reformed band picks up where they left off, keeping the same lineup that appeared on FNM’s final album, 1997’s Album of the Year. Founding members bassist Billy Gould, drummer Mike Bordin and keyboardist Roddy Bottum are all back, as is singer Mike Patton, who took over vocal duties after Chuck Mosely departed in 1988. The notable absence in the band’s lineup is sunglasses-sporting guitarist Jim Martin, who was a member of their band during from 1984 to 1993, an era that encompassed their platinum album The Real Thing and gold follow-up Angel Dust. In Martin’s place will be guitarist Jon Hudson, who joined the band in 1997.

No tour dates have been revealed yet, but it’s been reiterated that the reunion will only cover Europe. Still, Mike Patton has a solo slot at Coachella, a festival the band was rumored to play even before the reunion was announced, so festivalgoers might just catch FNM in the states after all. Read the band’s entire statement here:

“Faith No More has always stood out as some sort of unique beast; part dog, part cat — its music almost as schizophrenic as the personalities of its members. When it all worked, it worked really well, even if the chemistry was always volatile.

Throughout our 17 years of existence, the mental and physical energy required to sustain this creature was considerable and relentless. Though amicable enough, when we finally split, we all followed paths seemingly destined to opposite ends of the universe. Yet during the entire 10 years that have passed since our decision to break up we’ve experienced constant rumors and requests from fans and promoters alike. Nevertheless, for whatever reason, none of us kept in regular touch, much less to discuss any possibilities of getting together.

What’s changed is that this year, for the first time, we’ve all decided to sit down together and talk about it. And what we’ve discovered is that time has afforded us enough distance to look back on our years together through a clearer lens and made us realize that through all the hard work, the music still sounds good, and we are beginning to appreciate the fact that we might have actually done something right. Meanwhile, we find ourselves at a moment in time with zero label obligations, still young and strong enough to deliver a kick-ass set, with enthusiasm to not only revisit our past but possibly add something to the present. And so with this we’ve decided to hold our collective breaths and jump off this cliff…. BACK, GOD FORBID, INTO THE MONKEY CAGE!!!

“We can only hope that the experience of playing together again will yield results erratic and unpredictable enough to live up to the legacy of FNM.

Who knows where this will end or what it will bring up… only the future knows. But we are about to find out!”

Australia….. pleaseeeeeee!!!!!

Patton for President 2012 | 2/26/2009, 8:14 pm EST

moss you are soooo mistaken!!! Faith No More without MIKE PATTON is like having a Faith No Man reunion.

Get it through your head… PATTON IS GOD!

And if FNM doesn’t tour the United States (Los Angeles, CA) then it’s SACRILEGE!!!

Bungle Fan | 2/26/2009, 8:17 pm EST

An FNM reunion is great, but a Bungle reunion would be incredibly fantastically effin awesome

Martinz | 2/26/2009, 8:29 pm EST

No Jim? won’t waste my time then

BT | 2/26/2009, 8:36 pm EST

Its unreal that they are so adamant about not playing in the US. There are so many adamant fans that would travel and pay tons of $ for this show. And to those of you saying FNM is nothing without Jim Martin, are you kidding me? King For A Day was an excellent record, Patton and Bordin are the keys

chood | 2/26/2009, 9:38 pm EST

if you’re gonna cry about jim martin, you might as well cry about chuck mosely too. jim was booted after angel dust for f sake! king for a day & album of the year were both great. get over it. haha

Dr. Manhatten's blue weiner | 2/26/2009, 10:34 pm EST

Mike Patton better drink pee onstage in NYC this time, or else my dog gets hardcore buttsecks!

Orgo | 2/26/2009, 10:38 pm EST

While I regret not seein’ Faith No More with Jim Martin on guitar in 1993,I was more than compensated when I saw them with John Hudson on guitar in 1997 at the Newcastle Workers Club.Quite possibly the wildest gig I’ve ever been to.

mac afro | 2/26/2009, 11:36 pm EST

Saw them open for Billy Idol in 90 (my second concert ever), saw them at the Boathouse in 92 and saw them twice on the AOTY tour in ‘97!

My guess is that US promoters don’t know a good thing when they got it (just like US audiences). If America would wake up and quit tokin’ on American Idol, Jonas Bros. and Coldplay, maybe we would be graced with such greatness as a FNM reunion. At this point, we’re not worthy! (but we’re working on it!)

While I would have preferred to have Jim Martin back in the lineup, Jon Hudson did do a great job on guitar on Album of the Year. A friend of mine saw them on that tour and said that he sounded great and fit in perfectly. So at least it’s an actual true lineup of the band that’s getting back together. I hope they do a full North America tour (I’m sure they will) and I also hope that they’ll start working on new music as well. Jim Martin may be gone but he’s certinaly not forgotten, not by a long shot!

I think i am going to cry.

timmmaayyy | 2/27/2009, 7:09 am EST

Of course they’ll play the U.S., this is just publicity they’re generating by saying they won’t.If you’re going to re-form a band that everyone is screaming at you to do so you’re not going to ignore the biggest audience on the planet, especially the country you call home. As far as Australia…..maybe, but damn that is a long flight to get there!

McBama | 2/27/2009, 7:49 am EST

T-DOG | 2/27/2009, 8:16 am EST

As a longtime fan of FNM and Mike Patton in general, I can tell you that FNM is actually better without Mike Patton than without Jim Martin. You can’t lose the one who defined your sound and expect to be anywhere near the level of excellence you were once at.

Anonymous | 2/27/2009, 8:57 am EST

I am glad that they will stick to Europe and they should Australia too, because we were the only audience that never considered FNM a one hit wonder band.. I remember when AOTY came out I was in California and it was impossible to find!!! People actually asked me if stll they existed!!! In Europe and Australia people supported them throughout their whole run up and Patton still sells out shows down here without the whole Avant genious hype that slowly built in the US… I guess they do it for the good money and also as a thank you note for the people that actually cared about them and not for the posers that started listening to them because Papa Roach told them to!!!

To McBama who said “Chili Pepper rip offs at their best…”

Just wanted to know that RHCP formed in 1983, FNM formed in 1979 under the name “Faith No Man” which changed to Faith No More in 1982 .. Their first official studio release came about in 1985 … Granted, RHCP released their first album in 1984 .. but FNM has been around longer..

doosh | 2/27/2009, 10:07 am EST

their best album without question was Angel Dust. no ifs, ands or buts. KFAD and AOTY absolutely pale in comparison. not that Jim Martin made the difference, but too many people seems to be pointing to the last 2 albums made in his absence. to me they were dissapointments compared to Angel Dust which was near goddam perfect.

BlueFX | 2/27/2009, 10:42 am EST

Sounds like they’re running low on money. Time for them to get back to work.

tt | 2/27/2009, 10:50 am EST

Why is Jim Martin the focus of conversation here?
Just to be clear, he was pretty much kicked out of the band just after “Angel Dust” (which, by the way, he had little input on). Angel Dust was a major departure from FNM’s initial sound (the reason they’re considered a dynamic band).
For the most part, their finest and most influential material had nothing to do with Jim Martin. Anyone who writes that Martin’s absence is a deal breaker exposes themselves as naive and was never a fan of FNM’s entire, unbelievable, body of work. These individuals only prove to others that they are merely eager to go about interjecting their opinion- regardless of their extremely limited knowledge.
To those fans who believe “The Real Thing” was FNM’s last good album, I offer you the following thought. You are no different than fans left in the dust by Sgt. Pepper’s, crying to hear “I Want to Hold Your Hand” at shows (yeah, I just compared FNM to The Beatles).
Fortunately, Jon Hudson will be on guitar for the reunion. Their finest live guitarist, hands down.
About RHCP- they make boring music for boring people. Anthony Kiedis is a talentless hack- “yabba dabba doo, now!” on every freakin’ song.

pachahead | 2/27/2009, 11:10 am EST

I guess that some of they are out of money and want a little bit to eat,too many years without reunion and now they gonna……..weird my fellas.(i love faith)

TD | 2/27/2009, 12:11 pm EST

MCBAMA? “Chili Pepper rip off?”

I see you’ve done the ole “Give it Away” vs. “Epic” comparison..

well, the latter outdated the former by two years, bruh.

And while I love the Peppers, I rather dig on John Frusciante’s solo stuff any day of the week..all of it.

but FNM and the Peppers? nothing at all alike..

Dan | 2/27/2009, 12:28 pm EST

I couldn’t care less. I never liked these guys.

Yeah Alrite | 2/27/2009, 12:41 pm EST

One of rock’s best live vocalists is back!! Wooohoo!! I love Patton’s singing. This should be an awesome reunion. I was really hoping he’d sing for Velvet Revolver, but this is even better!

weegie | 2/27/2009, 2:14 pm EST

No one cared about them the first time they called it quits, their 15 minutes were up. And the only interesting thing they ever did was We Care Alot sans Mick Patton.

Dude Man | 2/27/2009, 2:45 pm EST

It’s just awesome to see Faith No More back together. We will all miss Jim Martin, but bands change and not every band can come back with the lineup you want them to. I wish they would put out a new album.

LB won Kenobi | 2/27/2009, 3:34 pm EST

Although everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think that ‘weegie’ is a fucking idiot! There, that’s my opinion. Faith no More influenced a shitload of individuals, bands, ect… and I’ll be stoked to see them if they end up in my part of the world. I totally agree with the fact that RHCP write boring music for boring people, which is why they had more commercial success that FNM. Fact.

Orgo | 2/27/2009, 3:36 pm EST

Torgo-you’re entitled to your opinion but I’d prefer it if you said your piece without takin’ the piss out of me.Behave!

sirloin | 2/27/2009, 3:51 pm EST

I had all the Faith No More albums at one time. Gradually realized Epic and Angel Dust were great. We Care Alot and King For A Day were ok and Album Of The Year was junk. So it appears the wrong line-up is returning.

tt | 2/27/2009, 4:10 pm EST

Dear sirloin,

Epic isn’t an album. You moron.

Brett | 2/27/2009, 4:11 pm EST

guy smiley | 2/28/2009, 10:08 pm EST

i don’t want to go to europe just to see this … but i will. i will be upset if it comes to me going to europe and THEN they book a US tour.

FNM, what do you have against americans? i mean, i know the answer to that and i’m with you. but who do you think will come out to a FNM show? just don’t book a shitty opener who will bring out the bro’s and we will be ok. and FOR FUCKS SAKE don’t be an opener for some awful band of today.

Rob | 4/24/2009, 4:02 am EST

Rob | 4/24/2009, 4:09 am EST

Well, let’s just say that back in the day, the mainstream U.S. chewed them up and spit them out quicker than a Tijuana Chicklet. U can thank MTV and their administration for that since MTV seemed to dictate music in the U.S. at that time in the Rock era. Ur welcome Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, and Pearl Jam. FNM own you, but u owe them. For they paved your way.

Gus | 4/28/2009, 3:15 pm EST

I’ve always hated the way the US media has represented FNM. It especially sucks for fans like myself who have travelled to see the band 3 times and has to work to find out info on the band.

I know for an absolute fact that the U.S. Will be toured very well by FNM. Everyone can stop speculating on it. In fact there will be more dates here than anywhere. Don’t think FNM would disrespect the people who made Epic a hit while we were in Europe & when we got back home we were known & starting to sale a lot of records. FNM is coming to a town near you, promise.

crack hitler | 6/19/2009, 8:54 pm EST

First of all, the basics: All truly great bands break up. Greatness is measured by the progression of their work. Every FNM album was different then the last. You can hear their progression, for example: Patton’s vocal range changed with every album. By Album of the Year he could sing anything. Eventually, after expanding, experimenting, growing, there was no where else for them to go (ofcourse, I’m sure there were personal reasons for the breakup). Now, I’ve read all this chili pepper shit…they have been playing/recording the same bullshit since the beginning. They have not progressed as a band. Their sound is the same as it always was. This says alot about these bands and the people who love them…They SUCK. I know many people who appreciate FNM, but I also understand the way they were treated by “fans” and media in the US. Having been to Europe, specifically Germany, during FNM’s heyday, I see why they would want to tour there. Ofcourse, people are people the world over, there is just something different about the way FNM was treated in the US as compared to Europe. This is not the fault of their true fans, but rather that of promoters and fucking mtv. The bottom line is Faith No More is truly one of the greatest bands Ever. Anthony Kiedis and his fuck buddies are no talent ass clowns, and so are those who think they’re great. Jim Martin was an excellent guitarist, and was integral to FNM’s sound and progression. I was disappointed when he left, but their music didn’t suffer. I certainly wouldn’t turn down a chance to see them because Jim’s not with them…he wasn’t with them when they finally called it quits anyway. Last I heard he was growing giant pumpkins. Hopefully, they’ll play the US…but, in the meantime, all you fake-ass fans, posers who can’t differentiate between songs and album names…shut the hell up!

Come to the U.S… I aint got enough money to go all they way to fucking Europe, although i would in a heartbeat (only for FNM). fuck the eifel tower, london, and venice… that shit is all whack! Besides, the biggest Faith no More fans in the world reside in quite possibly the shittiest country in the world… the U.S of A. Why the fuck not?

If any of you think FNM will offer us another platinum album without Jim Martin is crazy, please just forgetaboutit and move on…FNM mid 80 early 90’s arguably was one of best live bands during that era but when Jim left so did that unique heavy metal sound.

Jon Hudson simple doesnt have it. Sad but true…

FNM has plenty of good music post Martin. If you dismiss Album of the Year and King for a Day, are you really a FNM fan?

Watch the fucking reunion show from Download 2009 on youtube. Critics, you will be silenced. Godlike performance. Jim Martin is a non-issue here; Jon Hudson is fucking rocking it. Haters, please go listen to some metalcore bullshit or Paramore or whatever it is you kids listen to nowadays — just don’t post anything. FNM MUST COME TO THE USA! HELP US FAITH NO MORE, YOU’RE OUR ONLY HOPE! Please, I cannot afford to go overseas!
