The planned Spider-Man musical, featuring music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and the Edge, will make its Broadway debut in February 2010. Previews of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark start January 16th, with the musical’s official starting date February 18th at the Hilton Theatre. Julie Taymor, director of film musical Across the Universe, is set to direct.

Bono and the Edge assuredly had no shortage of material to contribute to the musical — they’re incredibly prolific these days, penning 50 to 60 songs during their No Line on the Horizon recording sessions. The real test for the Irish band’s comic book knowledge surely came into play when they wrote the musical’s lyrics. We’re hoping for a tender eight-arms-to-hold-you ballad sung by Dr. Octopus.

While no casting announcements have been made yet, The Wrestler actress Evan Rachel Wood has long lobbied for the role of Peter Parker’s girlfriend Mary Jane. Wood appeared in Taymor’s Across the Universe alongside actor Jim Sturgess, who has been rumored to play Peter Parker.

According to the press release, “Spider-Man’s battles will hurtle the audience through an origin story both recognizable and unexpected — yielding new characters as well as familiar faces — until a final surprising confrontation casts a startling new light on this hero’s journey.”

Rolling Stone will have more details about the Spider-Man musical in the next issue, so keep an eye on stands.

STOLE MY IDEA

Oddjob | 2/25/2009, 5:33 pm EST

On the one hand, this sounds awful. On the other hand, would Bono and the Edge really sign on to something if it wasn’t top-quality? On the OTHER other hand, I find it hard to believe that the woman who directed that pile of turds known as “Across The Universe” could possibly create anything of value.

Wow! I didn’t think it was possible for U2 to become a sadder spectacle. My bad.

So….

U2 goes ULTRA POP perhaps???
and…

if they do…

what then???

They/Bono become more influencial and more effective when it comes to REAL ISSUES in the world

which they/Bono have tried to confront.

The bigger they get… who cares??
the people that Bono is trying to help

if that is true, than it’s fine how G’damn POP they EVER become.

eh?

Sadder spectacle? | 2/26/2009, 10:47 am EST

U2 just put out one of their best albums. I have a feeling this will actually be pretty cool. They know what they’re doing. There’s a reason they’re where they are and still this strong after 30 some years.

Across the Universe rocked.

This project is another new musical challenge for Bono and The Edge. They have already written much music for films from Wim Wenders and with a musical they prove their open-mindedness about different styles of music. In general I´m not such a big fan of musicals, because some of them tend to be kitschy and stereotyped. But I believe that Bono and The Edge are capeable of making something different.

hahah, band needs to die already. You were never good.

fvaldes7 | 2/26/2009, 6:05 pm EST

this sounds dumb. Man I agree, they have finally jumped the shark. My God, does Bono have to be in everything!!.

While I have never really been a Bono fan, I think that this could actually be a pretty cool concept. At first, I admit the idea of Spiderman jumping around on stage while trying to sing to Mary Jane is pretty funny to think about; however if done right it could turn out pretty good. Well, at least it could turn out to be pretty amusing. If this play is directed by Julie Taymor, also the director of Across the Universe I dare to say it might not turn out too bad. However, the presence of Bono anywhere in the making/production of this certainly does lower its credibility a great deal… At least, to me it does.

this just sounds like a bad idea, almost as bad as a Star Wars musical

deano | 2/27/2009, 1:36 pm EST

I just heard the new U2 album. Amazing! Just when you thought they were going to play it safe from here on out, we get an excellent, moody risk-taking masterpiece — probably one of the best 3 or 4 albums they’ve done.

Nav Budhram | 2/28/2009, 12:52 pm EST

I haven’t heard the entire album yet, but if it’s as good as most people and reviews are claiming it to be, then this has definately been the best decade of U2’s career. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb and All That You Can’t leave Behind were magnificent.

noel | 3/2/2009, 3:32 am EST

i think just to add a point here to all thats been said i’ll only say this that if they think they can do this right then they should go ahead.

But, guys this is U2 they have hit the jackpot again with “No Line…”, and i agree with the rest that this is definetly one of their defentive albums and one of their’s yet to come of many more…

But, musicals are more different kind of music and if Bono n Edge think they can then lets support them… Life is all about taking the risk if your good at what you do then why not take that chance!!!

BigDummy | 3/2/2009, 8:29 pm EST

“Get On Your Boots” wants so bad to be a QOTSA song it’s kicking itself in the head.

This is hilarious though. As long as Bono isn’t singing, I’ll see it. While stoned. And lmao.

dbc132 | 3/9/2009, 11:45 pm EST

Spiderman musical… I’m highly skeptical. U2 may be the only redeeming factor for me.

moooo | 7/25/2009, 6:59 am EST
