White Stripes Help Conan O’Brien Say Goodbye to “Late Night,” New York City

2/23/09, 11:53 am EST

The White Stripes ended their nearly two-year hiatus Friday night, taking the stage for the final musical performance on the last episode of Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Jack and Meg White, both with guitars in hand, treated the crowd to a laid-back, stripped-down version of the White Blood Cells standout “We’re Going to Be Friends.”

“When we were trying to decide what musical guest to feature on our last show after so many years, there was one band that was always at the top of my list,” O’Brien told the crowd. “I wasn’t sure this could happen… Please welcome our good friends for many years, the White Stripes.” The Stripes last performed together during their Icky Thump Canadian tour in the summer of 2007, before Meg’s “acute anxiety problems” put a quick halt on U.S. tour plans. According to reports, however, the duo have reconvened to start work on their seventh album, projected for release this summer.

“There’s a sweetness to the White Stripes — there’s the hard rock but there’s this sweetness that I think resonates a little bit with our show and it’s always been a good fit,” O’Brien told Rock Daily last week. O’Brien also admitted that “We’re Going to Be Friends” is among his personal favorites. The Stripes have a long history with Conan, including a week-long residency the band had back in 2005.

Other guests on the final Conan before he jumps to an earlier time slot and a California zip code included actor/punchline Abe Vigoda, Will Ferrell, John Mayer and his old co-host Andy Richter.

The show was incredible, but how come no one is talking about how badly the White Stripes sucked ass? Meg’s guitar was WAY out of tune (don’t know how that one slipped by them) and Jack’s performance was just plain ugly and unappealing. I guess they were trying to do a Bob Dylan thing and totally change up the song’s style, but the cold hard truth is that it sounded like crap and they should have just played it straight.

KOL | 2/23/2009, 12:26 pm EST

even as a fan of the Stripes. . that performance was a bit painfull to watch. Meg put down the guitar and step away.

Denton | 2/23/2009, 12:34 pm EST

KOL is right. The performance was bad. Not as embarrassing or pathetic as Kanye West on SNL, but bad.

Part of the band’s magic is Meg behind the drums. THAT would have been a true White Stripes performance.

vlawde | 2/23/2009, 1:17 pm EST

My wife and I watched. She kept asking me “this is a joke…this isn’t a real band, is it?” I told her it was, but yeah, the performance was a joke. SO out of tune (and Meg can’t play guitar either) it was a real letdown. I was looking forward to a high energy, rockin’ tune

“stripped-down version of the White Blood Cells standout “We’re Going to Be Friends.””

…How is it “stripped down” if they ADDED Meg White’s vocals and a guitar?

the real TC | 2/23/2009, 2:28 pm EST

i do not understand what is so special about this band. oh well…opinions…….

Winston | 2/23/2009, 2:34 pm EST

Glad im not the only one who thought the White Stripes sucked Friday night. I love Conan, but was really excited about this performance. Complete let down.

Charlie | 2/23/2009, 2:36 pm EST

Thank… God… I’m not the only one who noticed… that the White Stripes sucked…

It should have been awesome. Given Conan’s history with the White Stripes. And they were a meaningful choice for a last musical guest.

But I feel like the White Stripes felt like they were so LEGENDARY that they had the license to go and do something both bizarre (which isn’t automatically a bad thing) and HORRIBLY executed (which is automatically a bad thing).

I’m normally more eloquent than this, but the White Stripes’ suckiness drained me of my ability to write well.

When the White Stripes are ‘on’, it’s amazing…

When they are having a rough night, it’s painful.

Anonymous | 2/23/2009, 3:08 pm EST

When I watched them on Conan, I thought to myself, ‘I bet this is the last time the White Stripes ever play together.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but there seemed to be a lot of tension between Jack and Meg.

Kevin the Robot | 2/23/2009, 3:09 pm EST

Somebody get Meg some bongos!

Joe | 2/23/2009, 3:36 pm EST

Conan playing an 1860’s baseball player…..Unbelievably funny.

Comehomenow | 2/23/2009, 5:50 pm EST

It’s a shame because it really is a great song. No idea why they didn’t just do the album version.

Bukowski Thompson | 2/23/2009, 6:06 pm EST

Holy geez… i like the striped, but maybe they should’ve rehearsed a little before ending the show with a sour performance. Damn.

yowhutup | 2/23/2009, 6:23 pm EST

it seemed like jack was crying at times, his voice kept cracking and sounded awful. one of my favorite bands of all time, but i expected a show stopping, guitar shredding, drum pounding performance from the stripes. Not this.

B | 2/23/2009, 9:47 pm EST

while watching friday night’s performance, i threw up in my mouth a little bit. It would have been great if it had been in tune and/or in time.

auramac | 2/24/2009, 12:24 am EST

I think the Bond theme killed his mojo.

miah | 2/24/2009, 12:31 am EST

Okay guys I’ll admit that the performance was def a bit rough and that meg really has no business playing the guitar but for all of you critics out there, that song was arranged in the tune of Conan’s Lullaby Song which appeared on the show several times. It was a fitting song choice, an emotional performance and a sweet tribute to conan.

The Intl | 2/24/2009, 4:08 am EST

Finally, the Jack White mystique is over. I feel sorry for Meg, hope she invested wisely, although in this economy what does that mean? And Conan is so unfunny. Carson is spinning etc etc.

Richard | 2/24/2009, 5:17 am EST

Love the band, but what a night to have the worst performance of your career. But I’ll let this one slide a hope they get back on track, soon

Anonymous | 2/24/2009, 5:46 am EST

it wasn’t that bad, Liked it. It was heartfelt and Conan seemed to appreciate it, as it’s his favorite and it was really all about him anyway. Jack still in much pain with a slipped disc, but made the effort, as Meg is getting back into it as well. Liked her percussive guitar with the delay to keep time.(*it was in tune by the way) They were like two kids playing for the grownups, they did fine.

Anonymous | 2/24/2009, 11:37 am EST

I liked it, but all that really matters is that Conan liked it. It was thier tribute to him, arranging his favorite WS song in the tune of his lullaby and giving Meg something to do on the song since the normal version leaves her out. Didn’t anyone hear him him say, “that meant the world to me” when he shook Jack’s hand afterwards?

Radio Zero | 2/24/2009, 5:16 pm EST

Odd: “How come no one is talking about how badly the white stripes suck ass?”

really? did you read any of the other entries or did you assume that everyone was showering them with praise? can you read?

Have any of you ever seen the band live? This is their thing….they like sloppy. Electric…they always speed up the songs. What did you expect of them? Do you think that Jack should fire Meg and hire Neil Peart? Maybe he could get Flea to play bass. They can play 15 minute long “math rock” songs with everybody trading solos until our head explode.

Stop judging artists for what they aren’t….try appreciating them for what they are.

cwl | 2/24/2009, 7:17 pm EST

Oh so they played something that sounded different from the studio version. You can’t be that surprised. This band always comes out with something we don’t expect which I think is a good thing. I appreciated it.

All of you saying you liked it need to shut the hell up and be honest with yourself….IT SUCKED….IT SUCKED HARD

Anonymous | 2/25/2009, 6:08 am EST

No, it didn’t. Maybe YOU do, but oh well.

stupid people/ stupid Russia | 2/25/2009, 9:27 am EST

,,,,,the Stripes are freaking awesome, go listen to Kanye or Taylor Swift if you cant handle rock and roll, baby.

,,,,,and hey you, Idiot from Russia, go f#ck yourself, you commie bastard. What the hell is with the ugly American comment? Take a look at your fat hairy women, then tell me who is ugly!

Anonymous | 2/25/2009, 12:33 pm EST

The played “friends” to Conan’s “lullaby” song. Jack planned it that way to honor Conan. If that was unfamiliar to you – of course you will be surprised at the result – it was unrecognizable except for the lyrics. Did you hear Conan walk up to them and say how much it meant to him?

Dr. Mabuse | 2/25/2009, 12:56 pm EST

Awful performance on Conan. I hope the next White Stripes CD isn’t as bad as the last two. It has been a while since some real good music from this group.

The Seeker | 2/25/2009, 1:32 pm EST

You thought Icky Thump was bad? Wow.

Jungleland2 | 2/25/2009, 1:42 pm EST

This was not good, but I do like the arrangement. I plan to steal it and play it that way this week. The actual performance was off, they were nervous, or unrehearsed, or had bad sound (or all three)but it’s a great song and could have been a cool performance

HORRIBLE | 2/25/2009, 3:06 pm EST

As a former fan, I have to say they should have thrown in the towel long ago. This performance proves they SUCK. I wish they would just go away peacefully.

Metal Master | 2/25/2009, 4:05 pm EST

Wow I think that was a little to stripped down, might be my little speaker on my Power Mac but I remember the album version sounding much better.

On a side note look how funny the Russians text looks hehe

PHIIIISH

That sucked | 2/26/2009, 8:39 am EST

If this performance was for a local talent show they would have lost.
And possibly gotten the hook the
whole performance was horrible.
Was that suppose to be singing
in harmony ? And this whole thing
about artist expression is bull.

That sucked bad

Dan | 3/11/2009, 5:00 pm EST

I didn’t think the performance was good at all. Though Jack is so charming and has a great voice, it made up for the bad parts. As a fan I found it sad and almost in tears to see them live for the first time in so long and to see how rusty they were. It was still a very touching moment to send Conan off, and I saw in Rolling Stone that they gave him a guitar.

sittre4you | 4/20/2009, 3:42 am EST

Stripes were top notch fallon so far is a sad replacement for conan
