E Street’s Steven Van Zandt on Max Weinberg’s Busy Dance Card

Last week NBC’s Website confirmed that drummer/bandleader Max Weinberg is definitely coming to Los Angeles when Conan O’Brien takes over The Tonight Show. So what does that mean for Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band’s tour, which kicks off a European leg two days before Conan’s June 1st Tonight Show premiere? “We’re still figuring that out,” says E Street guitarist Steve Van Zandt. “We’ll see. I think Max will be there for most of it. I just got home from Europe, so I haven’t even talked to Max to see what the latest news is. I know he was very much trying to figure it out.”

When Max himself spoke to Rolling Stone earlier this year he described NBC’s extreme patience over his frequent absences, hitting the road with the increasingly busy Springsteen. “It’s a hell of a problem to have in this economy,” he said, explaining that a well known NBC sitcom star’s attorney asked why Weinberg was allowed sabbaticals when his client couldn’t take one to film a movie. “The NBC lawyer thought for a second, then said, ‘The next time Bruce Springsteen asks your client to play drums, she can do that.’ In the legal department it’s known as the Weinberg-Springsteen Rule.”

Whether or not the Weinberg-Springsteen rule applies to the first few weeks of The Tonight Show, however, is up in the air. “Max will be fine until the beginning of the show on June 2nd,” says Van Zandt. “After that, we’ll see. I’m sure Max will be there for most, if not all of the tour. He’s as dedicated as it gets. I used to have to fly home every day off and film The Sopranos. He may have to do something like that. Conan, it must be said, has been tremendous. Once that second banana [former sidekick Andy Richter] split, I started to get concerned. I was like ‘Uh-oh. Now Max is not only the music director, he’s also the second banana.’ That’s a huge role to play.”

Is the band thinking about a possible temporary replacement? “No names have come up yet,” says Van Zandt. “I don’t know if it’s quite at that stage.” The E Street Band hasn’t played a show without Weinberg since he joined in 1974. “It’s hard for me to picture a show without Max, honestly,” says Van Zandt. “It really won’t be the E Street Band. I guess various members will come and go as we go through these last few years together. If there’s a few shows where he’s not there, I’m sure it will be fine. Most of the time he’s gotta be there though. There’s no drummer that could replace Max. There might be someone temporary that comes in and we’ll have to adjust the show accordingly. What nobody understands is that not only is Max a great drummer, Max reads Bruce’s mind. You can’t learn that. That’s impossible to learn. You could spend months rehearsing and you’ll never get that.”

If Max is unavailable for some E Street shows, I suggest they give the job to James Wormworth.

Wormworth is the guy that Conan would usually have as Max’s replacement, while Max was on tour.

(He is the black guy who drums barefoot, which a weird pinky toe).

So it would be fitting.

I didn’t think the Boss was going to let Max got L.A. If Bruce has to choose between Bruce and Conan, he’s going to choose Bruce. I thought it was a slap in the face to Max when they didn’t show a best of Max montage during Conan’s last week. It’s time for Max to bow out and make way for the La Bamba 6!

I disagree Kevin…

If Max was forced to choose between Bruce & Conan, he would probably choose Conan.

How many albums/tours does Bruce really have left in him, as he’s about to enter his 60’s…

Conan’s show, on the other hand, is a steady gig. No constant travel.

But yeah, Kudos to Max, if he’s able to juggle both, as he’s been doing for a while.

VCartier | 2/23/2009, 7:47 pm EST

I hate to say this, but Max has chosen Conan over Bruce. It just makes sense. Don’t expect Conan to be so generous with Max touring with Bruce. It won’t be happening. Max and the band all had to move to LA. With so much on the line, Conan needs his entire cast to get a firm foothold on the 11;30 time slot. As much as Max has been an integral part of the E Street Band, he will have to be replaced for some or even all future shows. So, we know somone has to play drums, so who might be the logical choice? I believe that Seeger Session Drummer Larry Eagle will be a logical choice as he has the most experience recording and touring with Bruce. Forget about Zak Alford, the No Name Band drummer. Though he actually played a lot of the Springsteen Catalog, I think Bruce has put that band so far in his rear view mirror, Zak who? Plus true Bruce Fans also didn’t like the band very much. who ever does sit behind the drum kit, here is some advice. The first night Max played live with Bruce, he was nervous, not sure what to expect. Bruce simply told him, just play as hard as you can and don’t stop till the show is over. I am sure that would be good advice to any drummer that plays with Bruce and the E- Street Band.

Personally, the only drummer I would be comfortable seeing in Max’s place would be original E-Street Band drummer, Vinnie “Mad Dog” Lopez, but, somehow, I don’t see that happening.

Scott | 2/23/2009, 10:53 pm EST

Scott Shriner is so hardcore he can juggle the Boss and the Tonight show at the same time. Max Weinberg is just a pansy.

Justin James | 2/24/2009, 11:13 am EST

How about keeping it in the family, literally. Max’s son Jay sat in on drums during Born To Run last summer at one of the Giants Stadium shows and did a pretty good job. (You can check it out on YouTube.) Granted, when the band plays BTR there aren’t a whole lot of surprises. It’s pretty straight forward, so whether or not he could handle a whole concert is unknown.

JJ | 2/24/2009, 1:07 pm EST

I nominate Ernest “Boom” Carter to fill in for Max if he missess any tour dates.

spencer | 2/24/2009, 1:22 pm EST

i say they bring back either ernest “boom” carter or vinnie “mad dog” lopez in the interim. they aren’t max, but i’ll take ‘em!

drummer boy | 2/24/2009, 1:26 pm EST

Max will find a way to make both gigs work. He is too important to both of them to leave either…

Mojoryder | 2/24/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Peter Criss!

or maybe Steven Adler …

If it comes down to it, Max SHOULD stay with Conan, and ditch Bruce.

In the late 80’s, Bruce was an idiot when he decided to dismantle the E Street band.

The rest of the band found new jobs while Bruce left them behind.
Then all of the sudden Bruce wants his old band back.

Max should give Bruce a taste of his own medicine.

Meredithluvsyou | 2/24/2009, 4:02 pm EST

Yeah! I think James “The Worm” is great and is funny, too. (he’s got the biggest smile on TV!;) Conan seems to luv him and the band sounds smokin’
He’d be great with Bruce, of course, but I think Max should just stay with the E Street BaNd and Conan should have WORM play for the Tonight SHow.

Please Save It Posers | 2/24/2009, 6:32 pm EST

Hmmm…Move to LA. Sleep in your own bed every night. Go to the same job everyday. Gee what do ya think he’s gonna do? As far as Max “getting even” and slaps in the face will you please get real!!!??? It’s not always the drama that you conconct in your pointed little heads. It’s a logistics problem, not a personal one. Get over yourselves you wannabees.

brucefan | 2/24/2009, 7:08 pm EST

If it came down to it Max would choose Springsteen, because he makes more money with Bruce and that is a fact. But it won’t come down to that Max will find a way to do both at the same time….and NBC is crazy if they try and tie Max in and not let him tour.

Mojoryder | 2/25/2009, 10:20 am EST

re: Professor Doctor

“all of the sudden Bruce wants his old band back?”

HELLO? the e-Street band has been reunited for TEN YEARS …
I guess that could be considered all of the sudden in geological time.

I agree with ‘please save it for the poseurs’ comment about this fabricated drama some punters like to throw up here … yes it’s only a logistics problem.

Eliot Riker(the biker) | 2/26/2009, 4:36 pm EST

Max should stay with Bruce and not move to LA. Little Steven is right on to say that it’s not the E Street Band without him. Conan will be fine doing his own thing and the Vivinos/La Bamba/etc.band will be great no matter what. They sound really good when that guy fills in so I’m sure he’d work out great. Max should stay with Bruce and be a “special celebrity guest” on the Tonight Show sometimes!

Pete Hobson | 2/27/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Conan v Bruce, come on ther’s only one winner. Max stay with the E Street Band.
I have spoken now, all quiet ……

Tommy Simms | 2/27/2009, 2:53 pm EST

Does Bruce still have Zachary Alford (92/93 band)number ?

I’m sure they can work something out ….

charles primm | 2/27/2009, 8:15 pm EST

As the founder of the original Mighty Max Fan Club way back in 1978, I think it would be a disaster to have anyone else on the throne other than Max. Nobody embodies the Boss’s beat better than the Mighty Max. Nobody. Bruce knows it, Max knows, and that’s all that matters.

Here’s what I think could happen:

June: Max stays with Conan for its debut and working on its own identity. The first month is usually the most crucial. Bruce could hire a temp to do the June shows.

July-August: NBC can let tour Max with the E Street Band since the summer is a ratings graveyard anyway. Max can do a couple of shows where he has time and when he feels like it.

September: Max returns full-time to Conan in time for the fall season.

This of course is only a possible theory and only if Max feels like it. We don’t what’s going on here, but I feel like NBC could be a little bit flexible because Bruce will probably not do anything with the E Street Band for at least a few years and not in the form of doing full-scale touring due to the age and health of some of the other band members. So to NBC, it may be like “Okay, we need Max desperately for June, and if he leaves July and August, we’ll have him completely for a couple of years at least since Bruce is not going to be doing anything with the E Street Band for a long while.” But of course, it’s NBC’s choice as well as Max’s choice too.

Jerralyn | 3/1/2009, 9:43 am EST

Max Weinberg has always stated that he couldn’t match Ernest Carter’s original work on Born to Run. Need I say more? Get Carter back and let’s hear the song (and all the others) the way it was always meant to be. Max is a great dummer and Roy Bittan is a great piano player. But nobody could ever be anything like the Ernest Carter/David Sancious uo.

Jerralyn | 3/1/2009, 9:45 am EST

(That should be DUO). And while we’re at it, how about bringing back the wonderful violinist and singer Suki Lahav and getting rid of the so-so Soozie Tyrell and Patti Scialfa? That band has been going steadily down hill with every decade. . .

mike | 3/1/2009, 10:49 pm EST

and how exactly is anyone going to see E Street with Danny gone?

Nadia from italy | 3/6/2009, 8:16 am EST

Nobody could replace Max but temporarily Liberty De Vitto is the only one that can make it!! He’s GREAT!

ARXNJSHADOW | 3/29/2009, 8:47 pm EST

I would say Ernest “Boom” Carter or “Mad Dog” Vinni Lopez. If Roy “Professor” Bittan ever has 2 retire then it has 2 be David Sancious.
Charlie might be the fill-in for Mr Danny Federici (RIP) but…
The E Street Band has a “SOULfulness” No-One can replace.
Everyone (up to 1984) had the “Sparks flying from E Street”.
The ONLY problem with the Band Bruce had 4 Human Touch/Lucky Town Tour was Zak. That’s what you get when you listen to Stink (oops I mean Sting).
I was there in Stockholm (Opening Night) and seen some shows after that (USA) and Zak still couldn’t get it where it had to be.
Too bad Jeff Porcaro passed before that Tour kicked off because that would have felt good with Crystal Talifero, Shane Fontane & Toby Simms

solomon deniro | 4/3/2009, 3:15 am EST

sorry guys Max is great and i know Zak Its all a vegas show. who cares anymore ive been drumming for forty years, icould play with both bands no problem. Bruce farts and the crowd goes nuts
