With the Academy Awards going down this Sunday — the biggest night in both Hollywood and Peter Travers’ living room — this week’s Rock List is dedicated to the Best Original Song winners and nominees. We include the nominees because way too many Disney and Celine Dion songs have won in the past, so we needed to open the voting to great songs that didn’t walk away with the Oscar. Comb through Wikipedia’s Best Original Song page to help you out, come back and tell us your favorites, and on Monday we’ll hand the Rock Daily Award to one lucky winner. Before you start racking your brain about how Prince got completely snubbed with no Purple Rain nominations in 1984, check out our picks:
• 1999: Aimee Mann’s “Save Me” from Magnolia (Nominee)
• 1971: Isaac Hayes’ “Theme From Shaft” from Shaft (Winner)
• 1993: Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia” from Philadelphia (Winner)
• 1973: Paul McCartney’s “Live & Let Die” from Live & Let Die (Nominee)
• 2002: Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” from 8 Mile (Winner)
And don’t forget to follow Travers’ continuing Oscar coverage in his blog, the Travers Take.
