“Rock Star: INXS” Singer Says He’s Homeless and Bandless

Remember J.D. Fortune, the guy from Canada who became the new singer for INXS after winning the reality show Rock Star: INXS? Apparently winning the right to front the Aussie band wasn’t all it was cracked up to be: according to Canada’s The Star, Fortune is now homeless. After INXS finished their long tour a little over a year ago, Fortune says the band casually just dropped him from their roster. “I was in an airport in Hong Kong and literally got handshakes of ‘Thank you very much,’ ” Fortune said, “I found myself really alone because I had traveled with these guys for 23 months. Some of the audiences we played for were upwards of 80,000 people.” And that’s how his INXS career ended, stranded in a Hong Kong airport.

Fortune’s dismissal wasn’t without justification, however: The singer reportedly became a heavy cocaine user while he was in INXS. “It got as bad as it needed to be for me to numb out the fact that this was going to come to a screeching halt,” Fortune said. Given that the band’s original singer, Michael Hutchence, had cocaine in his system when he died under dubious circumstances in 1997, it seems likely INXS didn’t want to follow down that drug-fueled path again with their new lead singer.

Thus, Fortune is homeless, off drugs and living in his pick-up truck while he scrounges together enough money to finish working on his solo album, The Death of a Motivational Speaker. Even though Duff McKagan told Rock Daily recently that Velvet Revolver is on the verge of revealing their new singer, maybe it’s not too late to get Fortune an audition. And attention American Idol season seven cast-off Michael Johns: this could be the job you’ve been looking for.

JD is talented, and he WILL pull through this. As for INXS, they’re not going to find a better frontman than JD. They’ve already tried several since Michael died, and none have worked out. Were they all bad seeds, or is it that the band just can’t get past losing Michael? The latter would make the most sense.

Nicole | 2/19/2009, 4:28 pm EST

I knew they should of picked Marty Casey!

Ada | 2/19/2009, 5:15 pm EST

Meh, pick an aussie this time.

David Lemley | 2/19/2009, 6:29 pm EST

Has anyone from the band confirmed or denied doing this? there is nothing on their website, facebook page, myspace, and in all requests for interviews, their publicists and spokes persons have not commented.

i’m shocked and disgusted that Rolling Stone would run this article without so much as confirming all the facts.

Good Riddens | 2/19/2009, 6:40 pm EST

I am tickled pink that JD was let go…good riddens to bad rubbish! So much for thinking he’s all that!

The band is doing what they need to do to stay alive and keep their following. He was terrible in a concert in AZ … I was so disgusted with HIS performance I left the arena before the concert finished.

Good Riddens | 2/19/2009, 6:44 pm EST

Good riddens to bad rubbish and that is exactly what JD was. I attended a concert and he was so wasted…it was a shame. We the fans of INXS paid good money for what….I believe JD got exactly what he deserved.

Trey Santos | 2/19/2009, 6:44 pm EST

I saw JD perform with INXS in Toronto at the Air Canada Centre in front of a sold out 20,000 capacity crowd. The show was spectacular and JD blew the house down. The guy is a star. INXS probably couldn’t control the wild antics of this incredible rock and roller. Now that he’s been booted out, they should pack it in. I have every faith that JD will now move on to bigger and better things. The future is bright for the Canadian rocker.

Steph | 2/19/2009, 7:15 pm EST

Too bad things didn’t work out!! I saw JD and INXS in Halifax when they played and I thought they all were fabulous. It was obvious that the guys have played together for years and I felt that JD was a nice addition to the band. Hope things work out for him – I sure the rock star lifestyle is hard to live.

Dave | 2/19/2009, 7:16 pm EST

Saw INXS in Barrie and JD was pretty gassed up but the man can sing and control the audiences attention completely. Sad to see the gig end but onward and upward. The man is a true rock n roller. Best of luck in the future JD.

getthedoggie | 2/19/2009, 7:41 pm EST

It was a valiant attempt by the band to carry on after Michael Hutchence, but the problem is he was the face, voice, and spirit of INXS .. without him it’s like a tribute band with original members. It’s time to leave it alone.

EVS | 2/19/2009, 8:13 pm EST

I dunno….I smell a ‘marketing gimmick’ on JD’s part!! And, ‘homeless’….c’mon man….what about all of those gals you snorted coke off of….none of them can put you on their couch?!?!

DrZ | 2/19/2009, 8:16 pm EST

I think Gary Cherone is available!

Rich | 2/19/2009, 8:28 pm EST

Everyone on that show knew that Ty Taylor was the best. His new band Ghost Hounds are really great and he’s in better hands.

KDK | 2/19/2009, 8:31 pm EST

I say the old men should pack it in and make room for the real star…JD. He is so incredible talented and hot, he was the only one keeping them alive for the past 2 years. They need to face facts that without JD they are just has beens. It was actually amusing to see them all on stage together because JD rocked the house while they all faded into the background.

schnauzergirlsdude | 2/19/2009, 8:31 pm EST

Let’s get all the story here folks. Look JD did a fine job fronting the band! I’ve seen them a couple of times and he did alright. Now if he was doing coke each and everyday, I am sure the band just couldn’t handle this behavour. It sounds like he knew it was coming. Marketing gimic..this may be true!

Sambo | 2/19/2009, 8:33 pm EST

To be given such an incredible opportunity to front one of the worlds premier rock bands is a one in a billion..
All be it on a reality tv show that i am sure the band did very well out of.. To throw it all away in the manner that JD has smacks of immaturity and stupidity.. Irrespective of how much talent he may or may not have, making it in the music industry is all about team work both infront of the mike and behind the console. The rewards are as great as the pitt falls. As soon as you think that you are bigger and burn brighter than the guys around you that are supporting you its time to go.. No single person is greater than the brand name.. Any kid any where in the world would have given his left nut to front inxs.. JD what have you done!!!

Pamela n san diego | 2/19/2009, 8:36 pm EST

my heart is breaking – BEING WITH INXS was His dream came true! they were like brothers. I SAW THEM TOGETHER 6 X THEY WERE AWESOME.if this is true … IT’S just another sad example of how drugs kill dreams.. i love him and INXS AND he is so talented and he will be back even better.xoxo TO JD

Shabooh Shableh | 2/19/2009, 8:52 pm EST

They should have picked one of the hot chicks from that show. The female sexual energy that Michael H. brought to the band could have been sexed up by a proper female.

Tdog | 2/19/2009, 10:03 pm EST

While we are correcting facts.. this story was broken on Entertainment Tonight Canada and copied in the newspaper you are pulling it from.. check out the full stories on you tube.

WellyStar | 2/19/2009, 10:18 pm EST

I agree with All4Fortune. What came first: JD’s realisation that INXS would never would treat him as an equal member of the band, or JD’s cocaine drug habit… I bet there is a lot of behind the scenes stuff and we all shouldn’t be so hasty to jump to conclusions.

When he was on the Rock Star INXS show he was so intensely focused and driven. He seems to be in a completely different place now.

Kathy | 2/19/2009, 10:41 pm EST

I think INXS should look close to home for there new front man, after all they thought and quoted Mark S from Australian Idol would make a great singer for a band

MRS K | 2/19/2009, 10:44 pm EST

I agree no one was going to fill Michaels shoes in the eyes of the band

Pauline | 2/20/2009, 12:20 am EST

JD wrote the biggest song off INXS’ new album. He was mesmerizing in concert. I am not surprised to see him starting something on his own … I hope it works out for him.

Ollie | 2/20/2009, 12:22 am EST

Somehow, I don’t believe this story, and if it is true I have a feeling he will be welcomed back after a stint of rehab.
I hope I’m right. This guy fit in great and the band has a great future with him. Without him they are never going to get close again.
He’s passionate, but a bit of a but. To think he wanted to rename the band “the Farris Brothers”. At first I thought it was a stupid idea, but I actually thought it was brilliant after thinking about it.
Stay tuned, the story does not end here………….

WCG | 2/20/2009, 12:42 am EST

I need to say this…I BELIEVE in J.D. Fortune, and believe in his talent – which is most definitely there. I also believe in his tenacity, his soulfulness, his gift of prose, his incredible energy as a frontman. I saw the orginal INXS back in ‘83 – and Michael Hutchence held me captivated the whole time – the rest of the guys, while all very talented – I can’t barely remember them as I recollect the concert. The memories of Michael are still vivid though. And – I have seen the INXS with J.D. as frontman – two different times. Both shows – J.D. was incredible, did a fabulous job!! I am very saddened by the present state of affairs, but I think J.D. is a talent in his own right

money? | 2/20/2009, 1:21 am EST

How does he have no money…?
Wouldn’t he have gotten a cut or something from all the ticket sales…..?

WCG | 2/20/2009, 1:29 am EST

Okay, my last comment was deleted.
Alright I’ll try again.
Bottom line? I believe in J.D. Fortune. I think he’ll get through this. He is a true talent, yes, human and he has made some mistakes – but no one is perfect.
I think he will rise out of this, his star shining brighter than ever. He has that kind of tenacity of spirit.

WCG | 2/20/2009, 1:31 am EST

Thanks for keeping my initial post afterall. *Go JD!!*

Bukowski Thompson | 2/20/2009, 1:34 am EST

Yeah, i’d say the guy is broke. they probably didn’t pay him shite. A lot of bands don’t get paid shite until their second or third album. It’s called getting f*cked.

Anonymous | 2/20/2009, 5:04 am EST

there’s gotta be more to the story…i hope he sort’s his shit out…loosing michael would have been HUGE..i’m sure they don’t want to go down the same road…you gotta be cruel to be kind sometimes…these guy’s are older and wiser now, having lost a great friend in Michael, the loss still sit’s with them…how could you forget?!! You live, you learn…i bet they thought he was great too, but you can’t let him stick around knowing what he’s doing to himself…you just can’t…i bet they let him go because they loved the guy…

mara | 2/20/2009, 5:17 am EST

What the? The only INXS i remember is with Michael…it’s just not the same, and i wouldn’t spend my money…i know AC/DC did it, but it’s still not the same…why do they do this?

mara | 2/20/2009, 5:23 am EST

i know, i know…the band name pulls the money in…but out of respect, i think your fans would still follow you with a different lead singer and new band name…obviously, you don’t think so…it’s a shame you’s don’t have more faith than that…i’m sure michael where ever he is would support that theory…hey, the doors did it too, where did it get them…doesn’t this tell you something!!

Homeless | 2/20/2009, 10:16 am EST

How the hell is he homeless?

not michael | 2/20/2009, 11:25 am EST

he was an insult to inxs, their fans, and michael. inxs shouldve never done that. jd sucks.

MB | 2/20/2009, 12:24 pm EST

JD now has his own myspace and his new music is available for download. In just a few days his site has received over 30,000 hits! His music actually sounds pretty awesome so I am sure he is going to be just FINE!!!

Rockaholic | 2/20/2009, 1:54 pm EST

I watched INXS choose JD Fortune on their reality show, and thought, Big Mistake!
They should have chosen Marty Casey. Now he was a Sight to Behold & Hear! Would have pulled in many more at concerts! (Us BabyBoomers) know how to Rock!
INXS + Marty Casey = STARDOM!
JD should be on his own!
I’m Sure INXS put up with his vain self-centered attitude waytoo long.
But Hey, They chose Him. Mistakes Happen! Bring on Marty Casey!

doug | 2/21/2009, 3:45 am EST

the JD incarnation of INXS played stadiums first time out, then it was 3-5000 seat concert halls and the last time around was 1000 seat casinos and state fairs. now, over a year after getting sacked and having snorted whatever dough he had, we’re supposed to feel for him and his stupid new album. get lost, loser.

Liz | 2/21/2009, 7:18 pm EST

I’ve been listening to his music on Myspace – and surprise – it’s good.

Top picks are ‘Failure and a Gun’, and ‘Dream Destroyer’.

Dan Coogan | 2/21/2009, 11:20 pm EST

INXS should hire Michael Johns (American Idol season 7) he’s the spitting image of Michael Hutchence and sounds a lot like him.

Rik | 2/22/2009, 3:07 am EST

Gary Cherone is available!

Danni | 2/23/2009, 8:48 am EST

His music is good, good luck to him. The music business will chew you up and spit you out.

WD | 2/23/2009, 2:49 pm EST

I also saw the JD INXS.
JD was the draw; let there be no mistake. He has animal magnetism the likes of which are very rare.
He gave INXS not only new songs; he gave them new LIFE. The Farris Bros will rue the day they let JD go.

Homeless??? | 2/24/2009, 1:47 pm EST

Wow if you can’t use those looks and the open doors to nail down some starry eyed trust fund Barbie for plan B … you ARE a loser and giving your fellow Canadians a bad name.

jimbouk | 2/24/2009, 4:23 pm EST

I have been so lucky to see INXS in the 80’s in the UK then again in 2006 & 2007 in UK with JD Fortune and in the USA . JD “just HAS IT” he is a rock star, I’m not a lover of the drug thing and INXS have a history with this issue, But JD says hes off the shi* now- inxs should talk to him get back together and release the new album and tour again as that is were JD shines on stage, sure I saw a Gig when he was off his face but he still delivered 100%.

I wish JD all the best with his solo work it sounde fantastic.

Well as for Marty Casey he entered rockstar to promote his own band not win, Ty Taylor was very good but not a front man for INXS, Sweet Suzi McNeil what a rock chick but again not at the front of INXS.

I dont think Michael Johns has the attention span to bang out all Inxs Hits let alone make everyone in the crowed wanting more (Male & Female)

also dont forget the shit he put up with from Michaels brother

INXS Fan | 2/24/2009, 4:29 pm EST

I have been an INXS fan since the mid 80’s. Michael was a true talent. I was worried at first about the Rock Star show, but came away very impressed with the talent. JD did a great job in their first album. I think that it was one of their better albums. I wish JD well and recovery, but don’t blame INXS for his drug habbits. Tough love is needed sometimes.

This guy and the other ‘rockstar’ Lukas Rossi have a sense of entitlement that knows no bounds – at least the truth is creeping up on JD – apparently one of the INXS band members kept a blog going throughout the tour, it’s on their website, and let’s just say what happened in Hong Kong is exactly the opposite of what JD said happened – but note to real bands: Do not rely on reality TV to pick your next singer…Lukas Rossi figures he should have been set for life, and now JD with the poor me attitude…you have to pay your dues boys! Pathetic

jd fan for life | 2/24/2009, 11:34 pm EST

jd is an awesome talent/he was the band. the last frontman was jon stevens and when jd won rockstar he said inxs would rape and piledge him/he better have a good attorney/and inxs was all about money, money and greed. seems that noone remembers that they used him to tour and he was all done. inxs can spin any story they want this time but jd has my vote/much love to you jd

Nancy | 2/25/2009, 12:09 pm EST

Nobody could hold a candle to Michael. He was the most incredible performer that I have ever seen. JD sounded good, but never had the stage presence of Michael. Having said that, I still think their recent CD, Switch was decent. I hope the band goes on with or without JD. They are too talented to not produce any more music.

jimbouk | 2/25/2009, 4:12 pm EST

With INXS comeing out today saying they did not sack JD it would seem that there is a clear case of the two sides of the storey I guess it will all unfold over the next few weeks/ month’s.

I still wish JD well and hope he and INXS sort thing out and get on with inxs new cd and the next tour

Kate | 2/25/2009, 6:06 pm EST

INXS didn’t say they didn’t fire him. They said they didn’t fire him in an airport. And possibly could call him again. Given his admitted drug use – not unreasonable.

JD didn’t say he was fired he said they left him with a handshake and thanks at the airport and he felt alone. Not unreasonable.

Somewhere in the middle there is the truth. And possibly journalisim. ;) Just sayin’

Sierra Gold | 2/28/2009, 5:17 pm EST

I think this is the best thing that could have happened to JD Fortune ! He’s still got Talent and fans, and now, with the experience of Rockstar living, he can pave his own solo career. Let’s wish him the best and a cleaner ride. INXS remains a great band but, let’s face it, their future seems bleak.

Chelsey Storm | 3/1/2009, 12:35 am EST

What ever happened to JD’s Cat or was it a Dog? (lol)… No matter what happened and what comes next folks, he’s the artist to watch !

a fan | 3/1/2009, 10:09 am EST

I think JD is awesome!! I saw INXS in Barrie. Did anyone ever stop to think that he had a hard time dealing with stardom and turn to drugs? I admit, bad decision but he is off them now and i have listened to the firt 6 songs from his new album and he rocks!! I think once he gets his sh*t together he blow everyones minds!! I think the people on here with the negative attitudes are jealous that a Canadian got the opportunity to front the band, well what can i say, when you’re good, you’re good!!

LINDA | 3/2/2009, 2:28 pm EST

AGREE WITH ROCKAHOLIC – MARTY CASEY WAS THE ONE!!!

ATTN: FARRIS BOYS- FIND MARTY — NO ONE WOULD/COULD EVER REPLACE MICHAEL H. ANYWAY. BUT MARTY WOULD DO NICELY– THANK YOU!

Calgary, Canada | 3/6/2009, 10:41 pm EST

Keep rockin! You are “fabulous.” JD was the only reason I ever went to any of the two concerts held in Calgary.

Calgary, Canada | 3/6/2009, 10:41 pm EST

Keep rockin! You are “fabulous.” JD was the only reason I ever went to any of the two concerts held in Calgary.

MJH | 4/2/2009, 9:52 pm EST

The last comment is very close to the truth. The band tried several comebacks with various artists. Having seen the band with JD in Toronto the biggest loss is for both sides , they were fabulous together.Problem is the band felt he was hired help as opposed to being part of the band. He said or did whatever to leave because there really is no loss to him either way, merely a good paying job as opposed to a chance at stardom in his own right. Yes he is not the most stable person in the world , that I agree with. Look up any artist you want, they resonate on a different wave length already so don’t act so surprised. INXS go get him back and make him an equal partner in all the new endevors, its worth it for you , me (fans) and JD. And do it before the portal closes, don’t be stubborn it took a lot of years to find the right fit !!!

Michael Hutchence | 4/28/2009, 4:42 am EST

JD try your talent on porn now! like mike tyson did :P

C. M. Davis | 5/9/2009, 9:33 am EST

I went to try out, for the Rock Star INXS show, in Atlanta, Ga. And me and Atlanta was only given two days advanced notice, of the try outs, while other cities had monthes, to practice. Then when J.D. Fortune came to sing in Atlanta, on 22 Feb. 2006,some of the fans heard me laugh and they told me to sing. Next, I cranked my voice up and about 300 heads turned then it sounded like a real INXS concert. Then at the end of the show I gave the v peace sign, with 2 fingers, to try to teach J.D. that Hutchens did that, at the end of his shows. In addition, if I was on the show I would have made him better, or I would be the lead singer for INXS or one of thier singing coaches.

Ken | 9/5/2009, 10:20 pm EST

Michael Johns from season seven American Idol would be a good frontman for INXS

MICHAEL JOHNS | 9/23/2009, 9:56 am EST

Michael Johns is my #1 Pick for INXS. Call Him NOW!!! JD is so talented, saw him many times Live. I’ll buy anything he sells and see him Live again. Move on Brother. Mrs. Wrong from Dallas LOVES you for who you are!
