“American Idol” Says Farewell to Anoop, Tatiana as Grace, Sarver, Gokey Advance

Spunky belter Alexis Grace, country-soul crooner Michael Sarver and hoarse howler Danny Gokey advanced to the season eight finals of American Idol last night, meaning Rock Daily favorite Anoop Desai and the duchess of drama Tatiana Del Toro didn’t make the cut — they’ll both be likely candidates for the Wild Card round, along with screen-time-starved Ricky Braddy. The show wasn’t clear as to which male singer received the most votes, and which made the Top Three with the third-most votes overall.

Twenty-four million votes were cast Tuesday night after the first 12 semifinal performances, which means perhaps the same number were watching on Wednesday and pondering the heavy questions: does Gokey have an eyeglass sponsor, or is he picking up new frames at some kind of Vision Depot every night? Why did Idol producers only air a blip of the pretty awesome footage of Carrie Underwood and David Cook covering Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way”? (The pair performed at the recent opening of the American Idol Experience at Walt Disney World, where all seven Idol winners gathered together for the first time ever.) Come to think of it, how come there’s never been a Mac-themed Idol week?

Wednesday night also brought the first painfully awkward group number of the season, a less-than-spirited cover of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” that sounded like Simon Cowell’s worst karaoke nightmare (note that the camera never cut to him during the song). Producers also packed in a reminder that past Idol hopefuls continue to live after they’re voted off, showcasing a duet between last season’s rock-ish contestants Carly Smithson and Michael Johns.

As for the top singers of the night, all three had lots of screen time playing up their difficult backstories during early episodes: young mom Grace, roughneck Sarver and widowed Gokey make for heart-tugging TV, don’t they? How long until we find out whether Idol votes are counted the same way Florida ballots were during the 2000 election? Yes, we welcome your conspiracy theories here at Rock Daily. Share them in the comments.

Sarver over Anoop?!

Let’s hope Anoop gets the wildcard…

Mac | 2/19/2009, 9:11 am EST

Anoooooooop for the WILD CARD!!

I’m sick of Danny Gokey talking about his wife or seeing his friend/family holding a photo of his wife whilst he was singing Hero.

And umm, his performance was extremely cheesy.

Didn’t think Alexis Grace sounded good either – but she was definitely better than the rest of the girls on the show.

Michael Sarver was okay, but I would’ve preferred Anoop. Even though last night wasn’t his best performance, he made the show interesting for a few minutes with his stage presence.

And OMG! I never realised how short Ryan Seacrest was until I saw him standing next to Anoop. Or is it just because Anoop is tall? He’s taller than Michael Sarver too.

Tatiana..Tatiana..I actually wanted her to go into the Top 12 :X

Al Gore | 2/19/2009, 9:19 am EST

It drives me crazy that Ricky Braddy is under the radar. He has the best voice of this first group. Too bad he’s not more handsome and his story’s not more marketable.

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 9:27 am EST

sorry…..Michael Sarver stunk…..anoop or tatiana should of went through. All they did was show Tatiana laughing thoughout the weeks to make her look bad….she just wants it…hollywood has more screw-ups with worse problems than….. laughing funny….

skyla | 2/19/2009, 9:29 am EST

anoooop!!! noooo! they better pick him in the wild card!!!

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 9:30 am EST

Give Tatiana a break! The girl can sing!

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 9:31 am EST

Anoop, Tatiana and Braddy for the Wild card!

me2 | 2/19/2009, 9:37 am EST

I am SOOOOOOOOO glad that Tatiana was voted off I don’t think I could take anymore of her drama queen. There is one thing to make yourself memorable another to make yourself annoying as hell. If she gets picked for the wild card then I hope America is smart again and votes her off. She has a good voice but not the personality she wouldn’t even clap at the end. There were 9 other people that got let go and they all took it like professionals.

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 9:44 am EST

Danny and Alexis deserved to make it through. The guy lost his WIFE and it hasn’t been a year yet. Give him a break!

Erin | 2/19/2009, 9:51 am EST

I really don’t like this new format at all. The public (whose judgement is often questionable anyway) cuts 9 singers based on 1 song each week to get down to the final 9 with 3 wildcards chosen by the judges. With this format the show is going to lose potential stars and fans of the show are going to lose interest. For instance, one of my favotites, Brent Keith, picked a song that wasn’t memorable, but given a couple of performances, I know he would have won over many fans. I am a huge AI fan and have picked the final 3-4 every year and he would have definitley been in the final 12 had the show progressed normally. Just one example of a loss caused by this new system in my opinion.

The highlight of the night was the snippet of Carrie Underwood and David Cook’s duet. And the producers should have added more footage from their beautifully blended duet.

Ricky Braddy was the best vocalist from group one, and deserves to be brought back for the wildcard.

UNC senior | 2/19/2009, 9:54 am EST

Was it just me or did anyone else find it unfair to have two guy North Carolina representatives in the same 12 group. That cost Anoop plenty of votes that he would have gotten for hometown spirit.

suffian | 2/19/2009, 9:58 am EST

Michael Sarver was in because he deserved it.. but hope to see anoop in wild card and be in the final 12. Alexis didn’t actually deserve to go but because of ‘a girl and a boy rule’ only. The best in this group are DANNY GOCKEY, MICHAEL SARVER and ANOOP DESAI

alex | 2/19/2009, 9:59 am EST

‘noop dawg!!

did anyone else figure out that AI stacked the 2nd round with really good male singers (lambert, breitzke, giraud AND allen in the same round?!) and the male singers left in the 3rd round are weak except j’unot? did the producers do that on purpose to get the blind kid through? and how are they going to get scott to do the sing-and-dance numbers? i hope they have some good choreographers working on that….

sportsmom | 2/19/2009, 10:06 am EST

I think America got it right for this group. Next week has more high powered singers grouped together and choosing 1 male out of the group is going to be very difficult. I too do not like this new format. Let half of each group stay and face off against another group.

HEY | 2/19/2009, 10:08 am EST

TATIANA NEEDS TO GO

angela | 2/19/2009, 10:09 am EST

The new show’s format will be the demise of the show. One shot in front of the public and 3 people are in the final 12? I don’t know (yet) that I liked them THAT much. One off night dooms the rest? There is no time for the voices and confidence to develop, and not enough time for the audience to get invested in the contestants. In past years, by the time I was ready to throw my shoe at the t.v due to a contestant going off prematurely,we were far into the show, and I was too invested to give up. This year, I already want to quit with talented singers like Steven (wrong song choice?) and Ricky Braddy (too shy??) hiting the dust. The promise of a wild card, though fun, isn’t enough. As I read over the comments, I see I totally agree with Erin. Mark my words, this year may lose them a lot of fans.

AAB | 2/19/2009, 10:09 am EST

the Wildcard could be to Ricky Braddy, he is the men in the competition with Kai….girls…and maybe the winners could be Megan Corkory

sally mae | 2/19/2009, 10:16 am EST

Anoop is a terrific singer. That was a huge loss. Hopefully, he will get the wildcard. He has personality + and a wonderful voice.

John | 2/19/2009, 10:29 am EST

America needs Tatiana in the top 12.

Nothing oozes over the top, maniacal diva-ism like AI’s bi-polar drama queen.

Bring back Tatiana!

RF | 2/19/2009, 10:40 am EST

Look to their future potential. While Sarver is a nice guy, he was off key and sings in too high of a pitch for the range of many songs. Alexis may make a great “Blues” singer and probably has a good future in front of her. Danny has the tone in his voice that is different and stands out. Very recordable, and he has the look, too. Anoop, while a good singer, will never sell to the mass media. Tatiana will make a great lounge singer in a small casino in Vegas. Most will get gigs doing something in the business, so in the end, they all come out ahead.

W. J. St. Christopher | 2/19/2009, 10:44 am EST

‘Idol’ reeks more of SCAM! every season.

jackie | 2/19/2009, 10:44 am EST

Ricky Braddy is the best singer in the group, but AI has turned into a popularity contest. The judges seem to favor Michael Sarver even though he gave karaoke performance. Without his “story” the judges would have panned him. Annop also has a better voice than Sarver, but wasn’t given the same push by the judges.

anna | 2/19/2009, 10:49 am EST

TATIANA IS GONE YEAHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Thank God!!! Do not bring her back. She surely didn’t show her professional side when she lost to Danny. I am so glad he made it. He kind of reminds me of David Cook, who I voted for all the way!!So, I will be voting for Danny!!! I hope they also bring back Anoop. It’s too bad they couldn’t bring back the guy(can’t remember his name)who became friends with Danny but was eliminated in Hollywood.

Jogirl | 2/19/2009, 10:50 am EST

It would be one thing if Danny was playing for sympathy because he can’t really sing. But, I think he’s genuine and he CAN sing. Aside from his sad story, he’s been a favorite of mine. I think Sarver has been strong in the past, but really sounded weak and had wierd facial expressions in this round. Here’s hopin’ Anoop (with a better song) and Ricky Braddy get wild card spots!

earl humphrey | 2/19/2009, 10:58 am EST

tatiana should have went through.what were you thinking america.

earl humphrey | 2/19/2009, 10:59 am EST

james | 2/19/2009, 10:59 am EST

Yeah, they got it right!! The best is with Tatiana gone!! How great is that. It’s going to be hard to pick my favorite right now. I really like Danny, but I think Alexis will go far, too. I hope they choose Anoop to come back-what a nice guy!!!

vickie | 2/19/2009, 11:01 am EST

ricky brady should of gone through and so should anoop and tatiana….thta is if we are voting on talent and not popularity……the country boy…..stunk….

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 11:10 am EST

annop and ricky for wildcard… tell you the truth had lil rounds or matt girard been in this group all of them would have went home… they didnt have the greatness factor in that group… group 2 and 3 will be great

deb hanson | 2/19/2009, 11:11 am EST

Danny is a very good singer..
Did you hear Simon Cowell???

He is not a hoarse howler that was just plain mean..He knows how to emote and make the song come alive.
I cant wait to see the next song he picks..
Go Danny!!!

Lily | 2/19/2009, 11:11 am EST

ANOOP!!!!!! Hopefully he gets the wild card!!!!!!!!

I’m glad Tatiana didn’t go through!!! Although I am so sick of Danny’s story of how he lost his wife! It’s touching and sad, but come on just stop.

Tricky | 2/19/2009, 11:12 am EST

Danny Gokey and Alexis Grace were my picks. Glad they got through. But Sarver? Forgettable, nice guy, but c’mon. Braddy or Anoop definitely over Sarver. Glad to see Tatiana go. Especially after how she acted at end of show — not just your dream sweetheart, the dream of all 36. Let’s see what happens next week…

gogo | 2/19/2009, 11:16 am EST

hopefully, tatiana will continue to take her meds.

Diana | 2/19/2009, 11:18 am EST

Noop-Dogg FAN!!
Look, Michael sings good but his performance was not up to par. Anoop could have done better but it was still good. only 20,000 votes separated them, i can’t believe he didn’t go thru BUT he will definately be there for wildcard because he is obviously one of the top dogs in this competition.

Gokey losing his wife, yes its sad and i totally commend him for being a strong individual but you can’t play the sympathy card EVERY single time you sing up there. He’s good but his voice is not as versatile as Anoop’s…just wait and see. Oh and Ricky was a total surprise! EXCELLENT VOICE!

TEAM ANOOP.

Bob Peacock | 2/19/2009, 11:22 am EST

Once again AI screws things up. The best singer in the whole 3 groups is Ricky Braddy. So it is popularity again, and not talent. Also Anoop Desai should be there. I could not stand the drama of Del Toro but that woman can sing. Danny Gokey has a great voice, let’s see what he picks next. Michael Sarver wasn’t that great but can sing country. Alexis I am waiting for more. Let’s hope the wild card is more far. The judges suck as usual.

Bob

anoop4wc | 2/19/2009, 11:34 am EST

Danny and Alexis were the best guy and girl for sure. Michael Sarver was horrible and the judges still played him up. Hopefully Anoop gets another chance with the wild card. Tatiana again showed her immaturity with her attitude after finding out her fate…

JR | 2/19/2009, 11:37 am EST

Glad Tatiana is gone. She should not even have made to Hollywood. And her laugh, how annoying.

Anonymus | 2/19/2009, 12:02 pm EST

After Tatiana got the boot, I thought she was going to collapse. Now THAT would have been something to talk about. :) Anoop looked pretty stunned. Kind of felt bad for the guy.

BDT | 2/19/2009, 12:59 pm EST

If you thought that “Tatiana Drama Queen” was going anywhere, but home read on. It was perfect TV dramatics to have Gorky (favorite of the judges and America) and TDQ (Tatiana Drama Queen) go face to face for the last spot was shear brilliance on the producers side…good job Simon to have thought that up….
Love the camera shots of TDQ hiding behind the rest of the rejected contestants crying here eyes out. Do not get me wrong TDQ has a good voice…but she blew it when she needed to put it all together. Theres always next year.

David | 2/19/2009, 1:01 pm EST

I cant believe Michael Sarver won over Ricky Braddy, open your ears america!I think alexis earned her spot and as far as Danny Gokey watch for him to go all the way, that guy is by far one of the best i have seen yet on AI.As far as all this hype on Anoop he’s a nice kid but lacks in vocals good call america on that one!And last but not least BYE BYE DRAMA QUEEN you have a good voice but america has spoken go home and grow up!

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 1:02 pm EST

I was so glad that Tatiana was voted off that I cheered louder than normal!! LOVE Danny Gokey, hope Anoop gets wild card. Did anyone notice Paula?? She was acting “funny” again this year.

waycool | 2/19/2009, 1:17 pm EST

NOOOO to Anoop…YESSSSS to Ricky for the wildcard. Anoop sounds like all the other male performers out there who want to sound like Bryan McNight. I am kinda tired of that same old sound. Need more originality like Danny. He has an awesome voice and is very soulful. Go Ricky for the wildcard

BK | 2/19/2009, 1:26 pm EST

Good thing that danny’s wife died before AI. That dude is going to get so much play from he ladies now that he would have ended up cheating on her. RIP!

Jeremy | 2/19/2009, 1:26 pm EST

I really liked Tatiana. I figured she different and has a terrible laugh and that’s what keeps her from perfection which keeps her from being boring. Danny can sing ok. The thing I hate about him is that he thinks that his son story will get him through and I’m sorry it’s not. He’s also too much like David Cook. We had him last year, we don’t want him again!

BK | 2/19/2009, 1:26 pm EST

Good thing that Danny’s wife died before AI. That dude is going to get so much play from the ladies now that he would have ended up cheating on her. RIP!

JustdoIt | 2/19/2009, 1:40 pm EST

TDQ (Tatiana Drama Queen) is not yet gone. If we all remember in the past AI is about attracting more and more audience and there is good chance that she may be back as a wild card. As much as many dislike her annoying character – she did sing pretty decent in one round that I can remember. OMG!!! – please do not select her in the Wild Card. She’s only a hot chick.
Anoop is a good and decent singer and I am sure AI wants to bring the Sanjaya factor by selecting him in the Wild cards.
Right from get go – I knew Alexis, Danny will be in top vote. The last was the choice between Sarver, Anoop and Ricky. I hope Ricky will be in the wild card if AI is looking for talent.
No more of Drama Queen – she is insane

Random | 2/19/2009, 1:40 pm EST

Devastated Anoop didn’t get through!! Hope he still makes it to the top 12 through the wildcard round – the judges would be stupid not to:)

Sheena | 2/19/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Anoop for wild card…

adam | 2/19/2009, 2:02 pm EST

I love TATIANA!!!
She may be different but shes a very talented singer and an entertainer and i really like her for that.
I HOPE TATIANA MAKES IT INTO THE TOP 12 through WILD CARD!!!!!
Michael sarver didn’t deserve to go.
Danny is overconfident and I have no sympathy for him! c’mon every person has problems he’s not the only one! He maybe a good singer but I don’t like him for his overconfidence. He reminds me a bit of Melinda Doolittle and you know what happened to her!!!

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 2:14 pm EST

i cant believe anoop is voted off, i lost my appetite in watching AI!

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 2:21 pm EST

I hope Anoop makes it in as a wildcard!! and any hope that jamar rogers will somehow make his way back to AI???

rk | 2/19/2009, 2:22 pm EST

Glad to see Tatiana go….Simon called it right, she is annoying. Am glad that we dont have to watch her behavior thru this season…I would not have watched it knowing she made it thru. Thanks to all who did not vote for her!

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 2:23 pm EST

Danny is a hoarse howler, period. Danny and Sarver had personal pimping to boot. Ricky and Anoop shud’ve made it.

xxxdog | 2/19/2009, 2:28 pm EST

I have worked in the music industry for the last 40 years and might have a fair idea of pure voice talent…..Ricky Braddy is standout with great range, depth and control….Not making the top 3 in Tues. group makes AMERICAN IDOL a JOKE IN REALITY ….

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 2:31 pm EST

The show is now less a showcase of talent, but is a place to cast sympathy votes. Is this what America is about? Can’t believe Anoop didn’t win. Won’t watch American Idol from now on.

Georgina | 2/19/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Ricky, Anoop, and Tatiana, I liked their voices based on last nights performances. The country singer based on last night to me was very so so. Tatiana is definitely interesting, a seemingly disturbed but very nice girl. Ricky could go all the way, Anoop has some major talent. I agree with an earlier comment, I wish Danny’s friend would have gone through, he can sing. I do not understand how they picked some of these contestants, the two country singers did not do country justice. Danny and Alexis Grace despite their stories are great singers, bring back Anoop, Ricky, and Tatiana if AI is about talent, and also Danny’s best friend.

Georgina

Me | 2/19/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Anoop was robbed! Totally surprised by that.

Thanks god Tatiana didn’t make it, even though her meds finally kicked in the last few nights and she was, dare I say, demure.

fan | 2/19/2009, 3:10 pm EST

I am glad tatiana lost. Please do not bring her back. I will not watch the show if she comes back. TOO MUCH DRAMA> GROW UP!!!!!

Theresa | 2/19/2009, 3:11 pm EST

Tatiana, what can I say, she is a poor sport and drams queen is to good to even describe her..she wanted to take the high light away from Danny but she failed at that, he went on like he should have.
He is my pick and I am going to vote for him every week.
No wild card for Tatiana, she does not deserve it… give it to Anoop!

Tat Fan | 2/19/2009, 4:00 pm EST

Tatiana has a chance to go down in the Reality Hall of Fame as the “the Girl you love to Hate”. Wow, she is giving Omarrosa a run for HER money!!!! Bring her back. I love her…and I hate her, but I love the train wreck.

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Noop has to make it. He was so much better than the guy who beat him out. That guy didn’t even sing on key. Guess Idol isn’t really a pure talent competition.

Sunshine | 2/19/2009, 4:45 pm EST

I cant believe that anyone would say anything about Danny being lucky his wife died? What is wrong with you? Danny is a great singer and a wonderful performer, he has been hangin in there the whole time and outperforming many other idol contestants. Danny deserves to be where he is, regardless of the sad circumstances that surround him. I think it’s horrible that people even think that the reason he is succeeding is because of his wife’s death. Grow up and pay attention to the real talent!!!!

Mark | 2/19/2009, 4:58 pm EST

“Danny is overconfident and I have no sympathy for him!”

Geez dude, you have a problem with a person’s overconfidence but you love Tatiana??? Guess you didn’t notice all of the overconfident garbage pouring out of Tatiana’s mouth during Hollywood week, huh? For example, the time she walked off stage and said “I did so awesome!” I almost kicked the TV. It was a real pleasure watching her crumble after she didn’t get the vote last night. Unfortunately, she will probably be brought back in as a wild card so the show can get a ratings boost from all of her drama.

Cris | 2/19/2009, 5:00 pm EST

It’s a vocal contest and the best vocal, with the widest range and most control was Tatiana. You don’t have to like her personality to appreciate the quality of her voice.

P | 2/19/2009, 5:50 pm EST

The article says that the show didn’t state which of the males got the most votes last night. If Ryan said only 20,000 votes separated Anoop and Michael, doesn’t that mean that Danny was the #1 male vote getter?

Ettienne | 2/19/2009, 6:47 pm EST

I went back and watched the show from tuesday and Ricky Braddy really has an incredible voice. It is a shame he was never show- cased during the previuos episodes. Paula really likes him, Hopefully a Wildcard will be in his future, if so I bet it will be Danny and Ricky in the finals

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 6:57 pm EST

Anoop and Ricky Braddy in place of Danny and Michael Sarver…Danny is a hoarse one, and Michael can’t even hold his breath while singing…America voted for these two for very obvious reasons.

sarver hater | 2/19/2009, 7:31 pm EST

we will not watch american idiots ever again because that terrible singer sarver made it through. He was one of the worst singers on the show.

Blitz76 | 2/19/2009, 7:51 pm EST

Hahahaha, well yeah Tatiana maybe a psycho but for me, it looks like she’s the most honest person in the group… she might not be a good sport but at least she’s not pretending she’s ok not getting in. hehehehe. But true, she can sing! she’s a belter!

KT | 2/19/2009, 8:12 pm EST

Is American Idol looking for the next Taylor Hicks? with 2 male karaoke Soul singers Michael Sarver and Danny Gokey in the top 12.
If they both competed last season neither of them would have made it through to the top 12. Their fans maybe crazy for them right now but as soon as the season is over, both will lose their appeal and fans will start to lose interest. The pair will receive little to no success post idol. Neither of them will appeal to the wider audience outside of Idol who don’t even watch the show.

annonymous | 2/19/2009, 8:28 pm EST

GO ANOOP
dont let me down simon and kara

Monica | 2/19/2009, 8:37 pm EST

I find it ludicrous when people like JustDoIt relate Anoop to “Sanjaya”. What is the same? They are both Indian?!

Jewels | 2/19/2009, 9:39 pm EST

Guys are WAY better than the girls this year. All the girls suck this week except for Alexis and Tatiana, who despite her “drama queen” tendencies actually has a very nice voice and CAN really sing. Danny has a great voice and really draws you into his song, but he IS overconfident which turns me off. Anoop has a BEAUTIFUL voice and can really sing, so can Braddy. Absolutely NOT to Sarver.

Dude | 2/19/2009, 11:21 pm EST

Tatiana has a) gross teeth, c) thought she was better than she really was, and c) is non-genuine. I think the public saw through all of that.

keanna | 2/19/2009, 11:27 pm EST

I agree with all of you guys about anoop.I lost interest in watching AI too. But you know how it is America is all about country singers.

mike | 2/19/2009, 11:43 pm EST

“But you know how it is America is all about country singers.”

Umm only one of the contestants was a country singer and he didnt make it through.

at least anoop is gone.

Alex | 2/20/2009, 12:15 am EST

When Michael Sarver performed ‘I don’t wanna be’ at the results show, it reminded me of the type of performances contestants do once they find out they just got eliminated..and not when you make it through to the top 12.
It looked more like a karaoke bar performance, however he did sing great in his audition. But like Stevie Wright and Casey Carlson they have no stage presence, and I have no sense of who they are as artists.

DISSATISFIED AND ANGRY | 2/20/2009, 12:22 am EST

TATIANA = WILDCARD FO SHO

When Anoop and Michael Sarver were brought to stage for the final decision, Ryan should have asked the judges who they thought should have gone through like he did with other contestants. It would have been interesting to hear what they said. Might have opened America’s eyes to their mistake.

SickofIdol | 2/20/2009, 10:18 am EST

Braddy and Anoop should have made it. If they don’t get the wild cards into the top 12, I’m finally finished with this show.

yeye_heart_anoop | 2/20/2009, 10:20 am EST

If Anoop did was in the 4th place, imagine how he’d do if he had as much screen-time and sob stories as those 3 did… Please.. enough with the drama!!!

JLT | 2/20/2009, 10:59 am EST

Anoop and Ricky Braddy belong in. Thank GOD Tatiana is gone, what a dork! Let’s all hope she doesn’t get wildcard, I couldn’t watch her dramatic a$$ a whole season. Yes Gokey is full of himself and using the dead wife thing…c’mon dude gimme a break. So far this season sucks.

North Carolina Native :D | 2/20/2009, 11:29 am EST

I’v herd Anoop sing multiple time with his college ACaplla group and he really does have an amazing voice, he sings modern songs, he isn’t often off pitch and he knows what he is good at. He obviously has a true love of singing and didn’t just decide to try it once like many of the people who audition for the show.

America made a mistake by voting for Michael when Anoop’s performance was clearly better especially when you consider the judges comments. I just hope that the judges overlook the fact that Anoop doesn’t have some elaborate story to share with everyone and instead pick him because he truly is a good singer.

I am not trying to say that Danny didn’t deserve his spot because he does have an amazing voice; but his story is being pushed a little too far just as the others’. Although i think all this is due to the produces including all these clips and reminders of the specific contestants. I would have loved to see people who know Anoop supporting him in the audience too.

I agree with previous people when they say that the judges should have a had a chance to say who they though should have made it between Anoop and Michael. I just hope that they make good decisions with the wild cards and that America can look past a contestants story long enough to hear the quality of their voice, which is what the show is really about.

An important note about the wildcard group: keep in mind that the producers will force the field of 12 to be 6 girls and 6 guys. Since one girl and one guy will get in each of the 3 nights, the gender of the wildcard will be completely dependent on who gets the second or third highest votes (keep in mind that it is entirely possible that Danny got the most votes, Michael #2, Anoop #3, and Alexis #4). So for sure one of the wildcards will be female (since two guys and one girl got in this time). If the same thing happens all 3 nights, there is no way either Anoop or Ricky will come back. So, if you want them back, VOTE FOR THE GIRLS.

JuJu | 2/20/2009, 3:42 pm EST

If the first week is any indication, AI better sign on No Doze as a corporate sponsor! With thousands auditioning, how do so many horrible singers make it through??? Every year some cute girls who can’t sing make past Hollywood week.

idolfan | 2/20/2009, 3:53 pm EST

Ricky Braddy was the best vocalist that night.

javlouid | 2/20/2009, 5:09 pm EST

It is unfortunate that talent has already been removed from the AI show. The goofy kid of course, but after that the talented folks were not called. It was simply popularity and the boosting of the blond by the AI producers that got them through. Do a full story and they will get the votes!

Disappointed | 2/20/2009, 6:15 pm EST

I don’t think this “new” strategy is fair for the contestants. To eliminate 9 at a time doesn’t give them a chance to shine. Everyone has off days and if they get this far then give them a chance. I am up for change but this was hard to watch and a great disappointment. Sometimes the real talented ones grow up in front of you. This new way doesn’t even give them a chance to take the crap they get and come back better. That is fun to watch!

Moi | 2/20/2009, 7:56 pm EST

It comes easy to Anoop Desai–singing, performing. Check out his versatility on youtube—he is ridiculously talented, entertaining, and lovable! He is refreshingly different than the same ol’ same ol’ and there is a humility about him. Get jiggy with it, judges! Left to me it would have been Anoop, Alexis, and Ricky (though Ricky’s style is not uncommon)Anyways, lets knock off the immature and mean spirit about Danny Gokey.

soped | 2/21/2009, 12:56 am EST

ricky braddy has to get a wild card spot!
i honestly think he has the best voice off all the guys. too bad he had no air time so no one had any point of reference for him.
danny’s a great singer too, but if you listen to the mp3s, ricky actually sounds more amazing!

Kathleen | 2/21/2009, 8:11 am EST

Idol producers give face time to the contestants they want through. ANOOP is so much better than Michael but didn’t have the sob story the producers wanted to sell tv. Come on – this is a singing competition, not a “hard working sad story guy who deserves a break competition” ANOOP for wildcard! He has so much talent and soul. Idol is really becoming just another crap tv reality show with their approach to selling a story rather than selling talent.

Anonymous | 2/21/2009, 10:15 am EST

Danny Gokey – The Dead-Wife Pimp vs Tatiana – The Marketing Drama Queen. I prefer the delusional honesty of Tatiana.

Jackie | 2/21/2009, 1:57 pm EST

American Idol is getting worse every year! I always looked forward to the show, now I doubt if I will ever watch another taping. What Is Karla doing on there? She is so boring, and is just an echo for Jackson. Paula is fair and kind. I like her.

Michelle | 2/21/2009, 6:15 pm EST

NOOP DOGG for wildcard. He has so much talent. Can’t understand him not going through. Wow. Is American really that much of a sucker for sob stories? NOOP DOGG! NOOP DOGG! Talent and soul wrapped up in one package.

Lauren | 2/21/2009, 11:18 pm EST

Michael Sarver’s performance sounded like karaoke at a local bar. Anoop’s vocals were the best by far, and he should have made it through instead. He better make it into the Wild Card round!!!

Anonymous | 2/22/2009, 8:15 am EST

anoop for the wild card he is sooooo HOT. I like that preppy UNC look even thought I went to Virginia Tech

Anonymous | 2/22/2009, 8:15 am EST

Eric | 2/22/2009, 8:35 am EST

Anoop – sorry America got side-tracked by the producer’s sob stories. You have a great voice, heart, soul and humility. NOOP DOGG for wildcard!!!!

Maggie | 2/22/2009, 8:36 am EST

Sarver?????? Sounded way too strained. Should not have advanced. Anoop – you are the package.

anonymous | 2/22/2009, 8:39 am EST

Sarver seems like a genuinely nice guy – and so what? This is a singing competition. Did not like his vocals. ANOOP needs to be brought back as wildcard. Way too early to cut him out of this.

Anonymous | 2/22/2009, 10:10 am EST

So about the conspiracy comment, I’m thinking there will be a much larger viewing audience for wildcard week, since Anoop did not make it straight through. And since we all thought he would, maybe those votes weren’t delivered so honestly??

Anonymous | 2/22/2009, 10:23 am EST

I was telling my boyfriend that I hoped I would see someone I knew this year on AI. He said we were probably too old (we’re only 22&23). But then he came home while I was watching it during audition week, saw Anoop, and said “I know that guy! I went to highschool with him!” He told me what a nice guy Anoop is and how he remembered how talented he is. Of course, after hearing him sing, I could only agree. Honestly, I did not know how excited I would get about Anoop, but this is the first year I have voted. And I feel like I am voting for someone who really deserves it, who can handle the record companies, and who can create REAL music. Anoop has a great look, awesome personality, and an incredible voice. I think he will become very successful in the entertainment industry no matter what.

new fan | 2/22/2009, 10:58 am EST

okay. so why did america put a young woman through who has a YOUNG child that is dependent on her, a man who -in his own description- needs to be working to take care of his family, and a guy who obviously needs to spend more time grieving over his loss (i have lost a close loved one and cannot imagine taking on something like this so soon afterward) and here is anoop, a guy who has a degree and no major commitments, and yet he gets less votes than the two other guys… is it because we want to see people continue their education? but then why do so many high school-age contestants get so much attention and votes??

Moi | 2/22/2009, 4:28 pm EST

The name ANOOP means
Incomparable, unequalled; unique—I looked it up :)
And our Anoop’s presence, talent, and charm are living up to that meaning!

Elizabeth | 2/23/2009, 2:48 am EST

I’m confused, what is the best way to get Anoop into the wild card? Does buying his CD help? and someone above said to vote for a female–I don’t understand.
I have never written about AI before. But Anoop is a Force–I mean, he is awesome. I would do whatever I can to help him make it. OTOH, any producer out there ANY smarts will snap him up like crazy I hope, AI or not. He is simply amazing.
Tatianna did have an amazing voice for the females. However, did you notice she was barely hugged–or very unenthuiastically–by the others when she lost? I think it is probably hell to be around her for them, so it’s good she was voted off. She should go off on her own to get fame if she is capable…I think AI contestants have it hard enough without a loony in their midst to deal with.

from Australia | 2/23/2009, 3:13 am EST

me and my colleagues at the university feel it should have been Anoop … what happened?
he can obviously sing … keep our fingers crossed … wild card for Anoop

amanda | 2/23/2009, 5:32 pm EST

Tatiana and Anoop were huge upsets.
They both beat the pants off Michael and Danny.

I honestly thought Tatiana would crash and burn when I heard she was gonna do a Whitney song. It wasn’t perfect, but she really showed she could sing.

Sarah | 2/24/2009, 1:04 am EST

I think the best female was Tatiana and Anoop definitely should have advanced over Sarver. Anoop had the better performance, great stage presence and an amazing voice. His youtube vidz show off his versatility.

padfoot | 2/24/2009, 3:22 am EST

Anoop should have made it. Yeah, he could have pick a better song (I love Angel of Mine, but it relies TOO MUCH on the backup singers.. and the AI backup singers SUCKED). I fell in love with him after watching all his Clef Hangers video on youtube. Dang, he’s so versatile. And I love love his voice.. So I know he could do so much better last week. But even then, his performance was better than most of the contestants that night.

Come on Anoop, show ‘em what you really made of if (when!) you made the Wildcard.. and then Top 12!

Michael’s voice is nice, but his performance sucked. He should have not gotten into the Top 12. Plus, he is soooo boring.

I am not telling you | 2/24/2009, 9:58 am EST

Anoop!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!! HOW DID THIS HAPPEN!!!!!!!?

Anna | 2/24/2009, 10:14 am EST

I REALLY want Anoop to come back via Wildcard. He’s way too talented.

Anonymous | 2/24/2009, 10:05 pm EST

Anoop is HOT!!! What a SEXY voice!

Anoop_Fan | 2/24/2009, 11:42 pm EST

i love anoop!! he has the smoothest purest voice we’ve heard on Idol in a long time! check his videos with the unc clef hangers out on youtube and you’ll agree with me I promise. Not only that his humility and quiet confidence are unmatched and SO appealling. If Anoop doesnt come back I am SO done with Idol! Anoop I LOVE YOU!

fionaapple | 2/25/2009, 5:10 am EST

I am rooting for Anoop too! The hubby, kids, and I were all shocked he didn’t make it. This mom is in love with Anoop’s YouTube videos with his acapella group UNC Clef Hangers. I always left the fandom to the kids until this year. I sincerely hope this talented young man comes back for the wildcard round and makes it into the top 12.

ROCKER GIRL | 2/25/2009, 7:28 pm EST

TATIANA WAS SO STUPID TO THINK THAT SHE WOULD EVEN SURVIVE A COUPLE OF WEEKS ON THAT SHOW SHE SINGS LIKE A DIEING ANIMAL

duh…….. because he’s got a great voice.

Cynthia | 2/27/2009, 1:06 pm EST

Anoop got it SO wrong. Anoop is one of the best contestants to EVER be on idol. I trust that the judges will not be stupid enough to pass over him in the wild cards!

Kathleen | 2/27/2009, 1:48 pm EST

the problem is – if 2 more guys make it from the Week 3 group then the wildcard picks will be girls. Not looking good at this point.

Sue | 2/27/2009, 6:54 pm EST

ANOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OP – COME BACK!

Angie | 2/27/2009, 6:58 pm EST

Anoop – you need to think of a big sob story quick because the producer’s definitely aren’t pushing raw talent. OK – how about you are president of Save the Whales” at your school, or maybe even more relevant now – have personally built with your own hands and one broken hammer 30 Habitat Houses – all the while going to school and fostering cute homeless kittens.

jhfkdghdf | 2/27/2009, 7:28 pm EST

ANOOP DAWG! I miss him. And I actually liked Tatiana. They could both sing better then those other people.
Like seriously, that one dude…… is only on American Idol to maybe make some cash to support his family. He’s not in it because its his dream, or wants to be famous…he just wants money.

aron | 2/28/2009, 11:32 pm EST

officially anoop desai and ricky braddy in wildcard..

ricky- sing “the reason” by celine dion.
