The New Issue: Taylor Swift’s Secrets of a Good Girl

The world’s biggest new pop star is a little bit country, a little bit rock & roll, and all control freak. What’s behind Taylor Swift’s drive for success? Vanessa Grigoriadis hangs out with the Grammy-nominated, chart-topping 19-year-old superstar for Rolling Stone’s new cover story to talk awkward middle-school memories, how Joe Jonas broke her heart, and how Swift transformed herself from a hard-working kid growing up in Pennsylvania into Nashville’s favorite adopted daughter.

Grab the new issue today for the full story, and check out our first-ever story on Taylor, Country Lolita, right away. Plus, get a look at photos from the Rolling Stone cover shoot by Peggy Sirota in our Taylor Swift cover shoot gallery. And come back later this week for even more Swift — including photos from her family album, a gallery tracking her rise from hopeful to headliner, an exclusive Q&A you won’t see in the magazine and video of Swift getting a first look at her first RS cover.

And don’t miss The Story Behind the Taylor Swift Cover Story, where Grigoriadis opens up about her time with the teen sensation. Grigoriadis, who tailed Taylor everywhere from the set of CSI, where she was filming a guest appearance, to Faith Hill and Tim McGraw’s L.A. mansion to her Nashville home, where an afternoon snack of cookies and milk turns into a near disaster. So is Swift the good girl she claims to be? Grigoriadis says yes: “She really is that girl in the tiny little bedroom at home writing songs about the things she hopes and dreams and feels.”

I’m pretty sure a month ago, I left a comment predicting that RS would give U2 a 5-star rating and call their new album a “masterpiece.”

Seriously, if you’re Bruce, U2 or Dylan, you instantly get a 1.5 star start before they even hear the damned thing…

John Walsh | 2/18/2009, 10:06 am EST

Post the u2 review! The album has leaked and it’s dope!

Tony | 2/18/2009, 11:28 am EST

True, but I have heard the album now 10 times Leak)It’s up there with U2’s best and I am a tough criticc, I did not like their last album outside of two songs.
This one is packed with gems.

Lindsay | 2/18/2009, 3:31 pm EST

I have a subscription, when will I get this?

Also, Taylor Swift is a great performer, songwriter, and singer. She DEFINITELY is worthy of a cover.

GodHelpUs | 2/18/2009, 3:39 pm EST

U2 single tanks and a country/rock/bimbo gets a cover story for being a good girl?!? What the hell? This should be exciting! how many 12 year olds buy RS? She says the same 3 things over and over…and what she says about the Joe J. thing is not anywhere near the truth. I became a JBro’s fan just cause she is so freakin’ annoying.

Charlotte NC | 2/18/2009, 4:03 pm EST

“secrets of a good girl”? that’s a contradiction in terms isn’t it?

Jonathan van Zuijlekom | 2/18/2009, 4:04 pm EST

@Crowe: This is U2’s first 5 star rating in RS.

NLOTH is Magnificent :)

do-the-revolution@ | 2/18/2009, 4:12 pm EST

i cant believe rollingstone covers these disney pop bands and princesses. what the fuck?

what happened to rock’n'roll?
i dont understand how these tools can get an RS cover over bands like my morning jacket, death cab, etc. by doing that this magazine is essentially fueling the shit fire of horribly manufactured pop music the world loves lit under its own ass.

This magazine can make bands famous, give MMj or the black keys, whoever the cover.
Why dont you use your power to promote instead of conform?

When did this fucking magazine decide its primary audience should be thirteen year old girls?
It makes me angry and annoyed.

FUCK ROLLINGSTONE.

hereis | 2/18/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Suck a choad rolling stone!

nacho | 2/18/2009, 4:33 pm EST

you conformist bastards. you guys have gotten so low. there are great bands out there and you guys just put shitty, teeny boppers on your covers. i really drew out of your subs after that zac efron cover came out. the last issue before i canceled and you know what? i burned that shit.

get your self straight and go back to your old ways. before this disney trend carved its name in your back.

taylor f'ing swift? | 2/18/2009, 4:37 pm EST

How much payola are you guys getting from Disney these days?

Could be worse, you could have had the Jonas Brothers on the cover, oh wait…

jbg lo | 2/18/2009, 5:42 pm EST

talor ur singing sucks very badley

Mallory | 2/18/2009, 6:06 pm EST

Taylor wouldn’t be on the cover if she wasn’t deserving. After all, she was the best selling artist of 2008.

Josh | 2/18/2009, 6:11 pm EST

Funny how some of you are only now figuring out that RS is not a real music magazine. It is a pop culture magazine, ya know like Entertainment. It just poses as a music mag, and disappoints you from time to time when they reveal their true nature. The Big Takeover is the only music mag worth reading.

Becca | 2/18/2009, 6:24 pm EST

oh hilarious. for those of you that dont know. Taylor isn’t a Disney star.

ChocoboJangles | 2/18/2009, 6:44 pm EST

“Seriously, if you’re Bruce, U2 or Dylan, you instantly get a 1.5 star start before they even hear the damned thing…”

For real, is this the music industry or a frickin’ university? Since when does “tenure” have any bearing on the here & now? Sounds like subjective starry-eyed gushing, not objective and unbiased reviewing….

AMS | 2/18/2009, 8:00 pm EST

What the fuck? You could be doing 8 pages on the Hollywood Undead, but instead you’ve got someone who composed the music and wrote the lyrics on two best-selling albums before she was 19; who is smarter than a whip, signs autographs for 8 hours and who looks like a million bucks.

What is the rock n roll world coming to?

Hannah | 2/18/2009, 8:03 pm EST

i’m sooo glad to see Taylor on the cover! she is such a great role model! YYYAAAYYY!!!!!! IM SOOO HAPPYYYYYY!!!!!!

Michael | 2/18/2009, 10:07 pm EST

Taylor sucks big time. She is the worst singer in the history of music. She can’t sing her way out of a paper bag. I don’t get the hype. Sorry.

Michael | 2/18/2009, 10:10 pm EST

Taylor is so over-rated it is annoying. Carrie Underwood sings circles around that spoiled disney brat. Taylor can’t hold a note on key to save her life. She is fake, arrogant, and a total bitch. She should never have gotten a record deal. Simon Cowell would have destroyed her pitchy horrid voice on idol. She would have been sent packing at auditions.

Gretchen | 2/18/2009, 10:11 pm EST

If you are going to cover the True Queen of country, at least pick someone who can sing please. I am sick of this disney crap!

Carrie Underwood is so much better then taylor-can’tsing-swift, yet you ignore her, and worship this tween twat. She is horrendous. No talent bitch.

I hate this disney sellout rag!

checoo | 2/18/2009, 10:24 pm EST

Taylor Swift is one of the best artists out there right now ..by the way she is not a product of disney at ALL !!!

Steph | 2/19/2009, 10:54 am EST

How dare Rolling Stones put the BEST SELLING ARTIST of 2008 on their cover?!?!?

even if you don’t like her clearly oher people do… or else she wouldn’t have sold over 7 million albums in 2008.

and what the hell is up with the disney star comments? she has nothing to do with disney

JOEY | 2/19/2009, 11:39 am EST

LOSERS IF YOU DONT LIKE IT DONT READ IT ! GO LISTEN TO YOU RAP MUSIC !!! YO YO YO

JOEY | 2/19/2009, 11:42 am EST

COUNTRY MUSIC IS HERE TO STAY ! RAP BLOWS ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE INSTRUMENT- LESS BROTHERS!

fred | 2/19/2009, 1:41 pm EST

Finally, a talented youg artist who has achieved so much without resorting to flamboyancy or sexual antics. Way to go RS, nice choice.

kevin | 2/19/2009, 1:57 pm EST

this girl is a joke, how could anyone even listen to this squeaky sounding ugly thing! Go play with the kids at disney world, thats more your speed. all your music sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill | 2/19/2009, 2:00 pm EST

Yes, now I really believe the world is ending – if there are honest to goodness people out there can even say this is country music, you need to take some lessons from Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, Trisha Yearwood, Shania Twain, now these are real ladies, and real Country! Poor little Taylor, Boo Hoo, leave, go away no one wants to hear you- talk about sucking big time!!!!!!!!!!!!

RAH | 2/19/2009, 4:43 pm EST

I think a lot of people are missing the point of why Taylor is on the cover…she WAS ACTUALLY the top selling Artist of 2008. Thats not made up.

And I don’t understand where all the Disney comments come from? She’s not affiliated with Disney, nor has she ever been….I think you’re confusing her with Miley…

nicole | 2/19/2009, 7:07 pm EST

wow…. who are these people to say that she is a spoiled teen disney brat that cant sing? Im pretty sure that she has earned everything she has received with her music career. Yes carrie underwood is a great country singer too, but they choose taylor swift so get over it. and the fact that she writes pretty much all of her songs…. now that takes talent. Dont sit here and talk crap about her because you obviously dont know anything.

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 11:41 pm EST

Taylor Swift’s music is not “Disney crap.”
The fact that anyone could SAY that it’s “Disney Crap” is a ridiculous thought on its own.
It’s pop/country music, and the last time I checked Disney channel wasn’t reserving 5 minutes after That’s So Raven to play any of her music videos.
Just because she’s a popular artist that’s female and that a lot of teenage girls can relate to, doesn’t make her a Disney sell out.
Don’t like?
Don’t buy.

musicjunkie13 | 2/20/2009, 2:07 am EST

Hi,
As a Rolling Stone subscriber of 10+ years it has been a long time since I have been this excited & watching the mailbox!
I have had a great respect for Taylor since her debut single “Tim McGraw”! It takes guts to put something like that out there,(as a debut single at that) having no idea how it would be recieved by listeners at country radio. Not to mention she must have worried herself wondering how Tim himself would react to her song. She made a very personal statement with that tune.
Right now she is in a league of her own,her talent knows no end!
Her writing is awesome, personal, & heartfelt, and country fans LOVE that in an artist.
No doubt Miss Swift is going to be around for a very long and prosperous career,if she continues to stay true to herself & stays humble.
A great role model for our daughters too!
I am a huge fan partly due to the admiration my 7 yr. old foster daughter (I have had her since age 1.) Brooklyn has for Taylor.Last month I had to buy her her 1st guitar (pink) so that she can start lessons. She has only been 7 for 7 weeks, but she has such a will & determination (probably due to the circumstances she was born into) to play & sing…. that I as a 44 yr. old single parent feel that no matter what we have to sacrifice for these lessons…it must be done. She deserves a shot at her dream too, no matter if she comes from a “normal” family or not.I pray God blesses us with a way to do this.
Taylor we appreciate the inspiration you have provided Brooklyn!
I mean in 2 years you have become a superstar….a very deserving one too.God Bless & be with you Taylor.
peace & love,
~Angie~
PS. I like all genres of music, rock, both old and new.I love rap & I dig punk too. There is good music to be heard within each genre!
Rolling Stone would be boring as hell if it covered just one genre of music!Get Real!Alot of you sound like whiny ass kids cuz RS rolls out with something new & fresh…who cares what genre it is?
I hope RS continues to offer us a variety,so that I don’t get as stale as a lot of you have.CHILL!

Amanda | 3/4/2009, 11:03 am EST

I love taylor

Anonymous | 3/4/2009, 1:25 pm EST

Taylor isn’t anything to do with Disney,,and never has been so all those calling her a disney brat get your facts right before mouthing off…the word jealous comes to mind

LOLO | 5/8/2009, 10:41 am EST

YOU ROCK

W.S | 5/27/2009, 7:52 am EST

I wholeheartedly agree.

Taylor swift is a country singer/teen-bopper, who in my honest opinion is not nearly as close to be being a distinguished artist as those great before her. Rather than waste time, let’s all not forget that the magazine is without a doubt one amongst many entertainment magazines simply getting coverage on Hollywood’s most on demand singer, and trying to make a couple of bucks in the process.

Seriously, did you think they put her on the cover because she’s talented?

Anonymous | 6/25/2009, 4:48 pm EST

Carrie Underwood is better than Taylor Swift BIG TIME!!!!! I don’t even know why Taylor Swift got on this cover! She sucks at singing! Her voice to too weak for country! Carrie Underweood should be here. She can actually sing! That’s why she won American Idol!

jessie | 7/26/2009, 8:13 am EST

uhhhhhhh hey u guys better get a life we taylor swift fans will ALWAYS stick to taylor swift and stand up to her music she is not a brat and really doesnt care what u think cause she got 7 million other fans than u losers u r too jelous admit it she is the only beautiful RESPECTFUL nice hearted girl so go die u r all so jelous god i didnt know people are this sick this days god help u!
